The reading report
-----for the academic article Symbolism in Wuthering Heights Emily Bronte is one of the greatest novelists in English literature. In her short life, she wrote only one novel Wuthering Heights, which has become a world classic for its enduring interest and wide popularity.
This paper intends to show the symbolism of Moor in Wuthering Heights. Emily has expressed her specific understanding of the world in Wuthering Heights. And in this thesis, an attempt is made to explore the universal theme in the novel form symbolic. And this paper also analyzed the collision between the nature and culture in the Victorian age.
To expound these researching purposes, the writer used Exemplification and Antitheses to explore the different symbols of nature and culture. The writer has compared the different symbols and differences between Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, the love between Heathcliff and Catherine and the marriage between Catherine and Linton. So it makes this paper seems to be very logical and clear.
The research result tells me that it can`t be easily understood that Emily was telling us how she criticized the reality destroyed the pure love. The writer has explored that what the real things that Emily wanted to tell us is her concerning about collision between nature and culture. That is people should following the essence of nature instead of being controlled by reality.
To draw a conclusion, the writer said it was through symbolism that Emily Bronte presents a vision of life as a process of change in Wuthering Heights. The cycles of life is vividly depicted through the conflicts between romantic force of nature and day-to-day tangible force of culture.
Wuthering Heights has been considered as a work of great genius. The novel has been studied and analyzed by various readers and critics from every imaginable perspective, yet when I saw this paper, I found many strong points that I had never heard before. For instance, the writer has listed one chapter specially to explain the definition and function of symbolism, which made the paper looks so professional and precise. Besides, the writer also listed some previous critics and analysis to distinguish his creative points, which can turn out that his paper is original. However, there are still some weak points that made this paper seem not that perfect. For example, the writer didn`t list enough materials to support his analysis about collision between nature and culture, he just explored the symbol of moor and window. I think the heather and snowstorm are strongly symbolical.
From this paper, I have learned that a good paper needs not only persuasive thesis and arguments as many as possible, but also needs clear structure and simple words. More important, some creative ideas and funny points are the key to catch the eyes of readers. The last year of my college life is coming , I have to write the graduation thesis too. I`m interested in literature of America and Europe, so I want to write
thesis like this paper. I think those female writers in 19s in America or Europe are impressed me most, so I would choose one of their work to explore.。
