RAID Level Selection Notes
Use of RAID1+0 is recommended when frequent updates are required. Use RAID1+0 for systems requiring high-reliability and high-performance. Use of RAID5 is recommended for database systems, back-ups, or temporary data. RAID5 is quite useful for systems requiring frequent or mostly reads, where time taken to write data is not a factor. As with RAID5, RAID6 is effective for back-ups, database systems, and temporary data. Another parity is created and recorded in addition to the RAID5 parity. These two different parities allow double disk drive failure as to be handled. RAID6 is recommended when more reliability than RAID5 is required. RAID6 has a second parity disk added to a RAID5 group. Thus assures data safety even if two disk drives fail at the same time. RAID0 is not redundant and thus not recommended. Defining all system disks as one RAID group is recommended.
*:The FC-Loop number is represented as the lower 5 bits of the DE-ID (DE#xx).Disk drives in the
same FC-Loop mean the disk drives installed in the DEs whose FC-Loop numbers are the same. The same FC-Loop: DE#0x, DE#2x, DE#4x, DE#6x DE#1x, DE#3x, DE#5x, DE#7x (Example) DE#00, DE#20, DE#40, and DE#60 are DEs in the same FC-Loop. (Example) DE#01, DE#21, DE#41, and DE#61 are DEs in the same FC-Loop.
Data disks are assigned into RAID group units that comply with the basic rules of RAID configuration. Some of RAID group configuration installation examples are shown below.

System disks must be installed in slots #00 and #01 in drive enclosures #00 and #01. All system disks must have the same capacity and speed. System disks may be used as data disks. If the system disks are used as data disks, approx. 21.5GB of each disk is reserved for system use. Nearline SATA disks and SSDs may not be used as system disks. Data disks must be installed in the lowest free slots (ascending order: #00 → #01 → #02 →…0E) of paired drive enclosures. Hot spare disks must be installed in the highest free slot (descending order: #0E → #0D→ #0C →…). Hot spare disks must be installed in drive enclosures beginning with the smallest DE-ID.

RAID Configuration Basic Rules
In an ETERNUS DX410/DX440 Disk storage system, you can set RAID groups with the same RAID level and with different RAID levels. RAID group is a RAID unit and a group of disk drives configuring a RAID level and recognized as one RAID level in ETERNUSmgr windows. The following sections describe the number of disk drives that can be set in various RAID levels and recommended RAID level patterns. When setting up RAID groups, comply with the following basic rules:
