英语周周练(一)

一、完形填空:共20题每题1分共20分

Sometimes a mother’s greatest gift is the smallest detail of her child’s life, freely shared.

When I was busy with my housework in the 1, I was surprised to find the front door was 2s uddenly. Julie, our oldest child, came in. She’d been married for three months. I was still trying to get used to her 3elsewhere. Sometimes I even set her place at the table without 4. Julie handed me a small group of daffodils (水仙花) and said, "Guess what!" 5she opened the box on the table and bent to see what was inside. As I put the flowers in 6, I answered happily, "What?"

She began telling me some small 7of her new life as she made herself a sandwich. She’d learned to make cake by herself, and her boss was 8of her because of her hard work. We sat at the kitchen table, and I 9her eat, listening to her every word 10. It was a 11visit. Julie had to go to work. I thanked her for the flowers and for her visit; then I walked to the door with her and 12as she drove out of the yard.

13in the kitchen I sat and looked at the flowers. My daughter’s 14was as bright and dear as the 15spring daffodils. Suddenly, I 16the phone and dialed (拨) my own mother’s number. She lived a hundred miles away. When she 17, I said, "Guess what!"

"What?" she answered hopefully. Like Julie I didn’t have any 18news, just little details of the day and the children. 19I’d come to understan d in the last hour how valuable small talk could be. Just before I hung 20, my mother said, "You made my day."

二、阅读理解:共4题每题2分共8分

When I finished my master’s degree in English at San Dieg o State University, I was awarded my lifetime teaching credentials(资格证书). But, after taking time off from teaching to homeschool my children, going through a divorce, and living in New Zealand to focus on my writing and photography, I returned to California. I searched for over 15 months for any kind of teaching jobs all across America, from universities to elementary schools, and I could not even obtain a part-time substitute position. So I applied to teach where I was needed —overseas.

First I went to Russia where I taught for 6 months through a winter. My "language school" for which I was hired turned out to be a less-than-legal operation out of a Russian family’s home. I lived with them; I could practice Russian with them. My Russian boss could not find enough private lessons for me, so I had many free hours to walk through Samara’s streets and take photos of old churches, ice gardens, and interesting buildings. I never missed fresh vegetables or the salty, dried fish.

After 6 months of not being paid what my contract promised, I called the U.S. Embassy in Moscow for help. A kind counselor urged me to fly to Turkey where I had found a new teaching job online. I’ve been in Turkey now for almost 2 years. I’ve been paid well enough to survive and even given health insurance. While here, I met other teachers like me who left their homeland to teach overseas. My Canadian friend Peter Szikinger taught in China, Mexico, Hungary, and Turkey. He found very different experiences in each country.

One of my Turkish students once asked me, "Why did you leave America to teach English in Turkey? I thought America has the strongest economy in the world and is the Land of Opportunity." "Life is full of ironies(有讽刺意味的情况)," I laughed and explained. "Besides, I love the Turkish people, and my mission is to teach you English."

21.From the first paragraph, we can infer that
