Beam Modeling
Before extruding the surface model, the circle will be segmented. The resulting extrusion will then contain the surface geometry as well as the lines needed to define the beam sections.
New Features:
– Multiple select line bodies from the tree. – Beam orientation viewing tools. – Cross section selection through Detail options. – Beam cross section dimensioning.
– In “General” dimensioning mode DM often chooses the appropriate dimension type based on the geometry selection. Options for specifying the type of dimension to be added are available via RMB.
• Position the cursor near the origin until the automatic cursor, point constraint “P”, appears then click to mark the circle’s center.
• Drag the cursor to define the circle diameter (note, the actual distance is of no concern at this point).

Beam Modeling
Purpose
– Build a beam and surface model in DesignModeler then define and orient the beam cross sections. The structure is a 15mm thick steel drum reinforced with six stiffeners fabricated from T sections.

The initial sketch will define the drum’s cross section on the XY plane.
• From the “Draw” toolbox choose “Circle”.
Model Description
– Drum is 1.2 m diameter and 1.5 m long. – Beam T-sections are 80x80mm and 5 mm thick. – Beam ‘T’ cross sections must be aligned as shown.

• From the Workbench 8.1 Start Page choose the “Geometry” icon to start a new DesignModeler session.

• When the units dialog box is presented choose “Millimeter” as the length unit.

Beam Modeling
• Switch to the “Dimension” toolbox and leave the “General” dimension mode active (default).
Goal
– Create the drum structure shown at right by first creating the surface body then adding six line bodies and assigning beam cross sections. Once assigned the cross sections must be aligned in the radial pattern shown at right. Finally the DM bodies will be grouped as a multi-body part suitable for beam and shell modeling in Simulation.
• Select the circle and, using a second click, place the dimension. Note the specific location is unimportant.
• From the circle’s Detail window change the diameter to 1200 mm.
