I really don’t go to games so often.Alan: But don’t you enjoy going Don’t you find it exciting to be part of the crowdBetty: Oh, that’s for sure. Nothing beats the atmosphere at a sporting event: the cheering, all that energy. But sometimes it’s just too inconvenient getting into and out of the stadium before and after the game. And if you watch the game with friends, or at a baror restaurant…Alan: …you’ve basically created your own crowd.Betty: That’s right. Another reason why I like to watch games on television is that I simply find it easier to follow the actionon TV.Alan: Yeah, sometimes it is a little difficult to keep track of the ball when you’re sitting in the stands.Betty: Especially when your seats are high up in the grandstand and far from the field.Alan: It’s like you’re watching from an airplane, sometimes.Betty: Also, good sports commentators on television can add to your understanding and enjoyment of the game.Alan: After listening to you, I’m starting to wonder how they are able to sell any tickets to these games!Questions 9 to 12 are based on the conversation you’ve just heard.9.What do you know about the two speakers10. What elseBoy: Move away from the windows. They are so dangerous because they can break.Tom: Good, good. What about after an earthquake then What should you doBoy: Well, we shouldn’t use matches.Tom: Why notBoy: Because many terrible fires start after an earthquake.Girl: Yeah, and when the shaking stops, don’t go outside.Tom: Exactly. What is the speaker talking about14. Which of the following are the students advised to do ifthere’s a strong earthquake15. What are the students advised to do after an earthquakePart CWhat do twenty million people around the world have in common Theanswer is they all use the Internet. In fact from your desk, you can check the weather in Rio, buy stocksin Hong Kong, or see the latest exhibition in the Louvre museum in Paris. Also, specialist users like language teachers can discuss the latestclassroom techniques and activities. On a more serious note, doctors inAfrican can get up-to-the-second information on medical research aroundthe world. All you need is a basic computer, a modem and the software to a phone line. With a single key stroke you’re online and you don’t have to wait long for information. Delivery time for e-mail from Europe to the USA is about 10 seconds. But is it expensiveNot really –a typical online monthly charge fee in the US can be as low as$10.What’s really extraordinary about the Internet is the amount andvariety of information available. You can find out about kite flying inKorea, the prices of hotels in Pakistan, and the best plays on Broadway. You can use electronic bulletin boards to join in political debates, get advice about love, or even analyze your favorite sports teams’performance. Services are available that allow you to do your banking, reserve airline tickets, and even shop for a Mother’s Day gift.Part DPassage 1In some c ountries video games a re fast becoming a social problem. They are banned in the Philippines and Indonesia. In Japan, those who a re under 15 years old are forbidden to use the public machines at night. City elders across the United States are campaigning to restrict their numbers, while the Hong Kong government is proposing to license their operation. Thesevideo games a re causing children to waste their money o n them. Even adults are lured into spending working hours playing them.In Singapore, the battle of man against the machines takes place inlicensed amusement centers, mostly located in shopping centers. According to one estimated, each establishment can make between $250 and $1,500 a day. The schoolchildren in uniforms there are not allowed into thesecenters. However, one cannot help noticing that the majority of those who are often found in these places are youngsters. Many of them areschoolchildren who have changed out of their uniforms. Some p lay for the fun of it, others have turned them into a form of gambling, and some are hopelessly addicted to them. Now kids and adults alike play these games in the privacy of theirhomes. Video game sets have invaded most homes. The question that mustbe asked is: Have they any education valuePassage 2Amy Johnson was a pioneer airwoman in Britain. She was born on July1, 1903, in Yorkshire and lived there until 1923 when s he went to Sheffield University to study for a BA. After graduation she took a job as a secretary to a London lawyer. At the same t ime she became i nterested in flying. Soon her hobby became a determination, not simply to make a career in aviation, but to succeed in some project which would prove to the world that womencould be as competent as men in a male-dominated field in those days.Early in 1930, she chose her objective: to fly to Australia all byherself and to break the previous record of 16 days. Her parents and some of her friends lent her money to buy a used airplane.Amy set off on May 5, 1930. Her route took her over Vienna and Baghdad. She was caught in a sandstorm and had to make a n emergency landing in the desert. Six days later she landed in India. After experiencing muchhardship, she finally reached Australia on May 24, completing a flightof 11,000 miles. She was the first woman to fly alone to Australia. Inlater years, she set several other records in flight history.During World WarⅡ, Amy j oined other professional pilots to serve her country. Her flying duties consisted of transporting aircraft fromfactories to British air bases. It was during one of those flights in 1941 that Amy crashed into a river and was drowned, a tragic and early end tothe life of Britain’s most famous women pilot.Passage 3Bargaining customs are very different around the world. Few t ourists would go shopping in another country without knowing the exchange rate. However, many travelers do not learn anything about the local shoppingcustoms the place they are visiting before spending money. Understanding when i t is OK t o bargain can save you a lot of money a nd make y our shopping experience much more enjoyable. In some c ountries, bargaining is an important of part of the shopping culture. In others, bargaining is not done at all. Here is a bargainingguide for some countries around the world:Morocco: Bargaining is always expected in the shopping markets. Here bargaining is more than just getting the best price. If you go into a shop and agree to the first price a seller offers, the seller may not be happy. For Moroccans, bargaining is a form of entertainment; it is a game o f skill, a little bit of acting, and it is a chance to chat about the weather, business, and family. So be sure to have fun and try to get a better price!Switzerland: Bargaining is not the custom here. Shop clerks can almost never give you a lower price. However, some hotels may give you a lowerrate during the less popular times of the year. It cannot hurt to ask.Tahiti: Bargaining is not appropriate in the South Pacific. In fact, it is considered disrespectful to ask for a better price. In the foodmarkets, sellers will even take their fruits and vegetables back home w ith them, rather than give a discount!Test 2Part ADirections: You are going to hear eight short conversations betweentwo speakers. Doesn’t he know rock stars need the public They earn money from the public. So whyshouldn’t the public criticize them They shouldn’t complain when they are criticized. If they do, they’ll lose their fans.W: You said it.Questions 12 to 15 are based on the conversation you’ve just heard.12. What do you know about the woman13. Why are rock stars famous according to the man14. What did Zed Hawks do during the TV interview15. Which of the following is true of the manPart CThe weather changes so frequently that it is difficult to forecast. It is not unusual for people to complain that the weathermen were wrong. Fortunately, as Britain does not experience extreme weather conditions,it is never very cold or very hot. The temperature rarely rises above 32℃in summer, or falls below—10℃ in winter.Summers are generally cool, but due to global warming they arestarting to get drier and hotter. Hot weather causes terrible jams on the roads as Britons rush to the coastal resorts.Winters are generally mild, with the most frequent snowfalls inthe Scottish Highlands, where it is possible to go skiing. People enjoydiscussing the snow, complaining about the cold and comparing the weather conditions with previous winters.Contrary to the popular opinion, it does not rain all the time. There is certainly steady rainfall throughout most of the year, but themonths from September to January are the wettest. Thanks to the rain,Britain has a richly fertile countryside which is famous for its deep green colour.Part DPassage 1People's understanding of health also becomes deeper with theprogress in scientific research. Recently the term "health" has come tohave a wider meaning than it used to. It no longer means j ust the absence of illness. Today, health means the well-being of your body, your mindand your relationship with other people. This new concept of health isclosely related to another term-quality of life. Quality of life is thedegree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life. Why has the emphasis of health shifted from the absence of disease to a broader focus on the quality of a person's life One reason for thishas to do with the length and conditions of life that people can now e xpect. Medical advances have made it possible for people today to live longer, healthier lives. Imagine for a moment t hat you were born in the year 1900. You could have expected on average to live until about the age of 47. Incontrast, if you were born in the year 1999, you could expect to live tothe age of 75.Passage 2I often dreamed about what the world would be like one hundred years from now. I’m sure it will have changed a lot. For example, I think many people will be living in space. In fact, I imagine that all the advancedcountries will have established space cities by then. On Earth, in myopinion, most people will be communicating in English “online” by computers and videophones. As for my country, I think life will have also changed in many ways.First of all, the population will be decreasing. People will have fewerchildren and everyone will be living in smaller, high-tech communities. In general, cities will have become much smaller. I also think most ofthe environmental and transportation problems of today’s big cities will have been solved. In fact, I think life in my country will be a lothealthier. If I’m lucky, maybe I’ll still be living.Passage 3Earthquakes are something that most people fear. In the world thereare some places that have few or no earthquakes. However, most places in the world have earthquakes regularly. Some places, like Iran and Guatemala, have them frequently. Countries that have a lot of earthquakes are usually quite mountainous. The most talked about earthquake in the United Stated was the one that hit San Francisco in 1906. But the strongest one in North America was in1964. It happened in Alaska.Strong earthquakes can kill a great many people. In 1755, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded happened in Portugal. Around 20, 000 people died. And in 1923, the great Kanto Earthquake in Japan claimed 142,000 lives.Earthquakes are not the only acts of nature which we f ear. Floods, tidal waves and bad storms also cause us to be afraid, as they often claim many lives and do great damage to the environment. But they probably donot worry us as much a s earthquakes, especially in modern t imes. The reason is that we often know they are coming. We have some warning. Someday wemay be able to know when an earthquake is coming. However, so far no sure way is known to predict an earthquake. When one comes, it is a surprise.People cannot prepare for it, so hundreds of lives may be lost inearthquakes such as those in China in 1976 and in 2008.。

I mean, all my friends were there. But that's a year ago, now and it feels like such a long time. I love home schooling now. Other kids have to get up early and go to school ―sometimes it takes them over an hour just to get there! But me, I don't have to travel to school. I can stay in bed! All I have to do is go downstairs! And there's no stupid uniform to wear, either. And better food for lunch. I think I enjoy studying more because my mum knows what I like and how I learn best. My grades are better, anyway. So something must be working! I see more of my parents than I would if I was at school, so I think I'm closer to them ―especially my mom ―than other kids who go to school all day. When other kids ask me "what school do you go to?" and I say "I don't go to school." They think I am sad and like, deprived or something. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday," celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent. "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England.During that time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch.People began honoring their mothers as well as the church. All across the world, more than 46 countries honor mothers with a special day, but not all nations celebrate on the same day. They should pay 5,000 dollars (4,400 US dollars) a head for each extra child and up to 800 dollars every year thereafter, according to the plan published in the Medical Journal of Australia. In contrast, contraceptives and sterilization procedures would be eligible for carbon credits, suggested Professor Barry Walters at the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth."Every family choosing to have more than a defined number of children should be charged a carbon tax that would fund the planting of enough trees to offset the carbon cost generated by a new human being," he wrote.Walters made his proposal in a letter in which he criticized the government's payment of a 4,000-dollar "baby bonus" in a bid to boost the birth rate in this sparsely populated country of 21 million people.Paying parents extra for every baby fuelled more emissions and contributed to global warming, he said, adding that the bonus should be replaced with a "baby levy" in line with the "polluter pays" principle. And Professor Garry Egger, director of the New South Wales Centre for Health Promotion and Research, agreed. "Population remains crucial to all environmental considerations," he said. "The debate (around population control) needs to be reopened as part of a second ecological revolution."18.A) 5,000 dollars.B) 5,000 dollars and up to 800 dollars every year thereafter.C) 5,800 dollars every year.D) 800 dollars every year.Script: According to the proposal, how much carbon tax should the parents pay if they have three children?正确答案:B19.A) 5,000 dollars.B) 1,400 dollars.C) 4,000 dollars.D) 800 dollars a year.Script: How much money does the government of Australia pay for a baby bonus?正确答案:C20.A) To push the economy of the country.B) To INCREASE the birth rate.C) To make the country more sparsely populatedD) To reduce global warming.Script: Why does the government provide the baby bonus?正确答案:BSection CDirections: In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks with the exact words you have just heard. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written. How can gratitude help us in our everyday lives as moms?Think about the (21)_________________ you can make in your family life just by noticing and being (22)_________________ for all the great things they do. Are you afraid of making mistakes?Yes, I fear to talk in English, especially with strangers. I'm not very good at speaking and Ithink I tend to make more mistakes when talking to my teachers and fewer mistakes with native speakers. I know mistakes are ok and helpful in our learning process, but still I just want to avoid making mistakes, especially on some formal occasions.5. How would you start and close a conversation?Well, there are many ways to start and close a conversation. It depends on whether the conversation is formal or informal. If you are talking with a close friend, you can use any sentence to open or close a conversation. If you are talking with a stranger, you'd better be formal and polite. For example, you can open a conversation: "Excuse me, do you have a minute?" "Can I ask you a favor?" For closing a conversation, you can say: "Nice talking to you. Bye bye!"Language FocusHere are some useful sentences and structures that you might find handy in discussing the above questions:●I often speak English to / with my friends.●To tell the truth, I seldom speak English.●I make mistakes whenever I open my mouth to speak English.●Mistakes are probably unavoidable when we try to speak a foreign language.●No mistakes, no progress.●I'm afraid of making mistakes because I don't want to lose face, so sometimes I just giveup.●I think the best way to improve our oral English is to speak as much as possible.●We learn to speak by speaking.●Practice makes perfect.●Reading more and listening more helps to improving oral English.●No input, no output.●Topics like the weather, places, trips, hobbies, films, books...tend to be safe.●Personal questions should be avoided, I think.Listening TasksA Passage How to Improve Your Conversation SkillsWord Bankappropriate a. suitable, proper 恰当的,合适的smoothly ad. easily, without difficulty 顺利地,无困难地half the battle the thing that counts most in successfully carrying through a difficult task成功的重要条件ScriptHow to Improve Your Conversation SkillsTo speak to people in a foreign language requires courage and a willingness to make errors. Some people are so afraid of making mistakes that they never open their mouths. And that’s the biggest mistakes of all. Now if you have courage and are ready to make a few errors, what do yousay?First of all, you have to open the conversation. Finding an appropriate topic is half the battle. Some topics, such as the weather and news, work well. But others, such as age, money or people’s appearance do not. The following are some good ways to open a conversation.Weather—It sure is cold today, isn’t it?News—-Did you hear about that terrible forest fire?A conversation in a foreign language doesn’t always go smoothly. Sometimes your partner talks too fast and you find it difficult to follow. Not to worry, though. You can always ask your partner to repeat what he has said or to speak more slowly. For example, “Excuse me, but could you say that again? I didn’t catch it.” Or “Could you speak more slowly, please?”At the end of a c onversation you need to find a way to close it in a polite way. “Well, I really need to be going” or “It was nice talking to you” are frequently used by people to end a conversation.Language and Culture NotesBackground information Language is closely related to culture. There are cultural differences between China and the English-speaking countries. In Chinese, questions like “Have you had your breakfast?” or “where are you going?” are often used to greet a person or to initiate a conversation. However, to native speakers of English, the question about the meal would suggest an invitation and therefore may cause misunderstanding. Similarly, the question “Where are you going?” in English is normally a request for information and only used by someone in authority or between very close friends. Therefore, in conversations with native speakers of English, we have to guard against inappropriate topics. In the West, directly asking adults, especially women, their age is generally regarded as impolite. “How much do you earn?” is also an embarrassing question, Income is considered as an extremely personal and private affair, and even within a family, one may not know the exact salary of another family member. Asking native speakers of English directly how much they paid for something is also regarded as an invasion of their privacy. If you really want to get information about the above-mentioned matters, you should use indirect ways. For example, instead of “How much did it cost?” you can say “Is it very expensive?” This gives your partner a choice of reply. In addition, do not give them advice, such as “Put on more clothes” and “Drink plenty of water”. Such remarks seem to them to be rather too parental. In a word, we have to make our English not only grammatically correct but also socially acceptable. In other words, we should be developing a cross-cultural perspective in learning English. There are also similarities in the two cultures, despite the differences. Appropriate topic can be jobs, hobbies, housing, holidays and outings, films, TV programs, and other forms of entertainment.Exercise 1: Listening for general understandingListen to the recording once and then do the following.1. Rearrange the order of the following sentences according to the passage you hear.a. Use some strategies to carry on the conversation.b. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, which are unavoidable.c. Choose an appropriate topic to start a conversation.Key: 1) b 2) c 3) a2. Which of the following does the speaker intend to convey to the listeners?a. Courage and a willingness will definitely result in errors.b. Starting a conversation is more difficult than closing it.c. Choose an appropriate topic and the conversation will be a success.d. Mistakes are unavoidable when you learn to speak a foreign language.Exercise 2: Listening for detailsListen to the recording once again and complete the answers to the following questions.1. What are inappropriate topics to open an English conversation according to the passage?a. ageb. moneyc. people's appearance2. If your partner speaks too fast for you to follow, what can you say?a. Excuse me, but could you say that again? I didn't catch it.b. Could you speak more slowly, please?3. How do you close a conversation politely?a. Well, I really need to be going.b. It was nice talking to you.Speaking TasksPair WorkListen to the conversations and repeat after the recording. Practise the conversations with your partner, playing the role of A or B. Then work with your partner to create your own conversations by replacing the underlined parts with your own words.A Passage Smile When You Read ThisListen to the passage and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F). Correct the ones that are false.1. The smiling students could remember more of the happy article than the frowning students.(T)2.The smiling students could also remember more of the angry article than the frowningstudents.(F)(The frowning students remembered the angry article better.)3. According to the speaker, facial expressions might affect a person’s memory.(T)4. Nowadays the specialists understand why facial expressions can help to improve memory.(F)(The specialists still don’t know why facial expressions help memory.)ScriptSmile When You Read ThisHow good is your memory? Answer these four questions: What did you have for breakfast yesterday? What clothes did you wear last Friday? Who did you talk to yesterday? Where did you go last Saturday? If you can answer all the four questions, your memory is very good.Education specialists in England have been looking into ways to improve our memory of what we read. The specialists found something to help: facial expressions. They gave ten students a happy article to read. Five of the students read the happy article while smiling. Five students read the happy article while frowning. Then they answered comprehension questions. The smiling students remembered more of the happy article than the frowning students. Then the specialists gave ten students another article to read. It was an angry letter to the editor of a newspaper. Five students read the angry article while smiling, and five students read the angry article while frowning. Which group remembered better? You’re right. The frowning students. The specialists don’t know why facial expressions help memory. They are continuing to study the relationship between the mind and the body. Until they find the answer, keep smiling (or frowning?)!Part DTest Your Listening A PassageListen to the passage and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.1. What cond ition does the expression “beside oneself” describe today?a. It describes something that really is not possible.b. It describes the possibility of having two of the same person appear together.c. It describes someone who is completely helpless because of anger.d. It describes someone who is extremely excited because of anger or joy.2. What is meant by the expression “flip your lid”?a. You may do something strange in extreme excitement.b. You are beside yourself with happiness.c. You lose self-control due to happiness or anger.d. You turn over the lid of your cooking pot to let the heat out.3. What does the passage mainly discuss?a. Expressions used to describe someone in great joy.b. Origins of some expressions describing someone in great anger.c. Meanings and effectiveness of some common expressions.d. People's excitement and related expressions.Script:Many expressions may be used to describe someone who is excited. One such expression is to be "beside oneself". You can be beside yourself with anger or beside yourself with happiness, although usually not both at the same time! If you are beside yourself, you are filled with excitement. The dictionary tells us that "beside" means "next to", or "at the side of". So the expression "beside oneself" describes something that really is not possible.Today, you might hear a husband say, "When my wife told me we were going to have a baby, I was beside myself with joy." Or someone might tell you he was beside himself with anger because he had just lost his job. When you are full of joy or are extremely excited about something, you may do something else that is strange. You may "flip your lid". A lid is the cover that prevents something from escaping from a container. A lid on a cooking pot, for example, keeps the heat from escaping. To flip something is to turn it over. So when you "flip your lid", you become so excited that you lose your self-control.。

2. What is true friendship?
True friendship is rational and responsible. True friendship is when he has one bottle of water in the desert, he would like to share half bottle with you. To me, friendship is like the two oars of a boat, they both help to pull the boat forward to its destination. Sometimes they are not coordinating very well with each other in the process of providing the power for the boat. But they need each other and can adjust each movement to get along. Besides, a true friend can be someone who is totally different with you, but
bosom friends. • Friendship involves affection and intimacy. • Friendship is based on warmth, trust and shared

My Last Trip AbroadI went to Europe last summer. It was a great experience for me. I visited many famous cities and saw many ancient buildings. I took lots of photos and bought many souvenirs. The food there was fantastic, too. I especially liked the seafood. Of course, I had some difficulties with language, but I managed to communicate with the local people because I had learned some basic expressions before the trip. All in all, it was a wonderful trip that I will never forget.。

The "smiling giant" gave basketball a foothold in the world's most populous market where there are over 12,550,000 television viewers. And he became a source of national pride and inspiration in China which has a population of over 1.3 billion. With his career over, the focus has turned to who will replace him, and what will it mean to the future of basketball in China where there are, some estimate, 8,600,000 young fans. Which of the following would be the best title for the two talks?2. Who are the speakers?Exercise 2:Listening for detailsListen again and complete the table according to the information you get from the recording.Speaking TasksPair WorkListen to the conversations and repeat after the recording.Practise the conversations with your partner, playing the role of A or B.Then work with your partner to create your own conversations by replacing the underlined parts with your own words.Conversation 1A: Excuse me, may I sit here?B: Sure.A: Nice day, isn't it?B: Yes, it's warm and sunny. I didn't catch it."Or "Could you speak more slowly, please?"At the end of a conversation you need to find a way to close it in a polite way."Well, I really need to be going" or "It was nice talking to you"is frequently used by people to end a conversation.Exercise 2:Listening for detailsListen to the recording again and complete the answers to the following questions.Speaking TasksPair WorkListen to the conversations and repeat after the recording.Practise the conversations with your partner, playing the role of A or B.Then work with your partner to create your own conversations by replacing the underlined parts with your own words.Conversation 1A: Excuse me, Jack, do you have a minute?B: Yes. Maybe one of us can win the next English contest.A: Yeah, maybe. Who knows?B: Well, I have to run now. I have an appointment with the dean. Bye.A: Bye.Part CAdditional ListeningA PassageSmile When You Read ThisListen to the passage and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F).Correct the ones that are false. How good is your memory?Answer these four questions:What did you have for breakfast yesterday? What clothes did you wear last Friday?Who did you talk to yesterday?Where did you go last Saturday? You're right. The frowning students. The specialists don't know why facial expressions help memory. They are continuing to study the relationship between the mind and the body. Until they find the answer, keep smiling (or frowning?)!Part DTest Your ListeningA PassageListen to the passage and choose the right answers to the questions you hear. Many expressions may be used to describe someone who is excited. One such expression is "beside oneself". You can be beside yourself with anger or beside yourself with happiness, although usually not both at the same time! If you are beside yourself, you are filled with excitement. The dictionary tells us that "beside" means "next to", or "at the side of". So the expression "beside oneself" describes something that really is not possible. Today, you might hear a husband say, "When my wife told me we were going to have a baby, I was beside myself with joy." Or someone might tell you he was beside himself with anger because he had just lost his job. When you are full of joy or extremely excited, you may do something strange. You may "flip your lid". A lid is the cover that prevents something from escaping from a container. A lid on a cooking pot, for example, keeps the heat from escaping. To flip something is to turn it over. So when you "flip your lid", you become so excited that you lose your self-control.Questions1. What condition does the expression "beside oneself" describe today?2. What is meant by the expression "flip your lid"?3. What does the passage mainly discuss?全新版大学英语(第二版)听说教程1Unit 3 School LifePart ACommunicative FunctionExpressing Likes and DislikesThere are various ways to express likes and dislikes. This will apply throughout this academic year.S: I'd like to stay in the self-catering accommodation. How far is it from the residence to the university?R: It all depends. The residences at Elms Road and Palm Road are about one and a half miles from the university main site and the Freemen's Common Houses at William Road are half a mile.S: When do I need to apply?R: Are you an undergraduate or a postgraduate?S: Undergraduate.R: Then you should apply for it as soon as possible, since places in university-owned accommodation are limited and if you don't apply before the end of the month, you are not likely to get a place.S: Could you possibly tell me what to do if no vacancy is available?R: Yes, you may consider private accommodation. I applied for it, but they told me there was no vacancy.B: What a pity! You should have applied earlier. Places in apartment buildings are always so limited.A: I guess so.B: But why don't you rent an apartment near school?A: Oh, no. I like living on campus. It's more convenient, isn't it?B: Yes, that's true. Come and see me if you have time. I'm in 302.A: I will. See you.B: See you.Conversation 2A: Good afternoon. Can I help you?B: Yes. It's more than I have in mind. Let me think it over. I'll call you back in a day or two.A: Certainly.Part CAdditional ListeningA PassageWhat College Professors DoListen to the passage and fill in the blanks with the missing information.College professors are often believed to lead easy lives of quiet thinking while teaching one or two classes every week. But actually they do much more than that. The average professor spends between six and fifteen hours in the classroom weekly, yet works from sixty to eighty hours a week. Because they must remain current in their fields, professors spend part of that time reading, reading, reading. That leads to additional hours during which they revise and update their class lecture notes. It takes far longer to prepare notes than to deliver them in class. Professors may spend time conducting experiments, working on college projects, or advising students. They may also be writing books, articles, or papers for delivery at conventions. When not in the classroom or in the office, professors are still working, behind closed doors in committee sessions or at home grading papers and preparing for tomorrow's classes. To accept this sort of schedule willingly, they must feel strongly about the importance of the college experience.Part DTest Your ListeningA PassageListen to the passage and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.Despite what your parents and others try to make you believe, life at college may not be the best experience you will ever live through. Why? The simple one-word answer is: Roommates. One has often heard about the guy that never sleeps or the girl who always has her friends over or the one who studies all the time and becomes very disturbed by the slightest movement you make. Okay, they are not all that bad. So how do you get them to stop? You can't do it. It's impossible. The only way you will be able to live with your roommates is by compromising. If you like to have friends over, but your roommates want to study, take your friends out. If you don't like to listen to music while you are studying but one of your roommates does, ask him to use headphones. Talk about your habits and ask your roommates about theirs. Respect your roommates and your roommates will respect you. You may not be friends with your roommates by the end of the year but you may be friends with them the year after, when you are no longer rooming together. This is all right though. Sometimes it's too difficult to try to live together and be good friends at the same time. Roommates are not always meant to be your best friends. Remember: Not only do you have roommates, you are a roommate. Be good to your roommates.Questions1. What does the passage mainly tell us?2. What's the only way you will be able to live with your roommates according to the passage?3. Which of the following is true?全新版大学英语(第二版)听说教程1Unit 4 Going to a PartyPart ACommunicative FunctionControlling a ConversationIn daily communication we often use different techniques to control a conversation. We need to know how to show attention or surprise, how to agree or disagree, how to break in, how to change the subject, and how to bring other people into a conversation. In this part you'll learn some of the ways we use to control a conversation.Listen to the conversations and supply the missing words in the blanks.1. M: Great party, isn't it?W: Yeah, super. Everyone seems to be having a good time.M: They do, don't they? By the way, do you know that girl talking to Jack?W: Who? Oh, that's Mary. She lives in our dormitory.M: She's pretty. Don't you think so?W: Yes, and clever too. One of the best students in her class, I believe.M: Do you know her well?W: Quite well. Shall I introduce you to her?M: That'd be nice.2. M: When are you leaving for Australia, Diana?W: In just two weeks. And I'm so excited. But there are still one or two things I need to do before I go.M: Like what?W: Like going to the travel agent and figuring out what to do with my apartment while I'm gone.M: Your apartment? Perhaps you could sublet it.W: Yeah, but who to?M: Hmm,let me think. Oh, I know just the person. An old friend of mine, Peter Jones, is coming here to do some research this summer, from June through August.W: That's exactly when I'll be away. Sounds ideal. When could you talk to him about it?M: Well, I'll be calling him later this week, anyway. I'll mention it to him then.W: Thanks a lot. Come to think of it, Michael, shall we have a get-together with Tom and Catherine this weekend?M: Good idea! Let's do that.Listening StrategyIdentifying Adverbials of FrequencyExpressions like "once a week", "twice a month" etc. are used to denote how often you do something. Now listen to the recording and write down short answers to the questions.1. M: Do you often clean your bedroom?W: We clean it every day.Q: How often?4. W: How often do you listen to English broadcasts?M: Quite often. I listen every other day, I guess.Q: How often?5. M: Does Jenny work in the lab very often?W: Four nights a week.Q: How often?6. W: Do you watch sports programs on Saturday nights?M: No. I enjoy going dancing and meeting friends at weekends.Q: How often?Part BListening TasksA ConversationSmall Talk Is EasyExercise 1: Listening for general understandingListen to the recording once and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.A: Mike, guess what?B: What?A: Carol just invited me to a party at her house on Saturday.B: Carol? You mean the pretty girl in your economics class?A: Yeah.B: Great! I'm sure you'll have a super time.A: I'm not so sure.B: What do you mean, John? I thought you really liked Carol.A: I do. But I don't know her friends very well.B: So get to know them.A: But I'm no good at small talk.B: Small talk is easy. You can learn.A: By Friday?B: Sure. I'll coach you. You just have to remember a few simple sentences.A: I don't know. I have trouble remembering things, especially when I meet people —I get nervous.B: Don't worry, John. You can do it. You just need a few tips.A: But what if I say something stupid?B: Relax. You won't. But even if you do, it's all right. Everyone makes mistakes.A: Yeah, especially me! What if I'm boring? No one wants to listen to a bore.B: Hey, you're not giving a speech. You're just having a conversation. So just talk about something you know they are interested in.A: That's the problem. I don't know what Carol's friends are interested in.B: Let them tell you. If you let people talk about themselves, they'll think you're interesting.A: You mean something like "So, tell me what you're interested in"?B: Well, you don't have to be that direct. For example, you can talk about the weather.A: You can't be serious. The weather's boring.B: It's a good excuse to find out what they like to do. On a rainy day, you say, "What do you do in such terrible weather?"A: What if they just stayed home and read a book?B: Then ask them about the book. You can ask if it was good. Ask if they liked it and why. Then talk about a book you really liked.A: So that's what small talk is about, isn't it? Well, I'll give it a try. Thanks for the tips, Mike.B: You're welcome. Have a good time at the party.Questions1. What are the two speakers talking about?2. What do you learn about John from the conversation?3. What is Mike doing?Exercise 2:Listening for detailsListen to the recording again and write down answers to the following questions.Speaking TasksPair Work。
