This even was started by Jennifer Barlow of Midlothian, Virginia in 2003, and it is becoming more popular each year. It has been supported by the International Dark-Sky Association, the American Astronomical Society, and the Astronomical League. This even always occurs in April, during the week of the new moon so that the sky can be as dark as possible for the best viewing conditions.“It is my wish that people could see the night sky without other light in the sky as our ancestors (祖先) saw it hundreds of years ago,” explains Barlow.Since it only lasts a week and not everyone in the country will take part in it, how will the National Dark-Sky Week reduce light pollution?
AI passed all the other courses〔课程〕 that I took at my university, but I could have never passed botany〔植物学〕. This was because all botany students had to spend several hours a week in a laboratory〔实验室〕 looking through a microscope〔显微镜〕 at plant cells, and I could never once see a cell through a microscope. This used to make my professor angry. He would wander around〔彷徨〕 the laboratory pleased with the progress all the students were making in drawing the structure〔构造〕 of flower cells, until he came to me. I would just be standing there. “I can’t see anythi ng,〞 I would say. He would begin patiently enough, explaining how anybody can see through a microscope, but he would always end up angrily, claiming that I could see through a microscope but just pretended〔假装〕that I couldn’t. “It takes away from〔减损〕 the beauty of flowers anyway.〞I used to tell him. “We are not concerned with beauty in this course,〞he would say. “We are concerned with the structure of flowers.〞“Well,〞I’d say. “I can’t see anything.〞“Try it just once again,〞he’d say, and I would put my eye to the microscope and see nothing at all, except now and again〔时而〕 something unclear and milky〔混浊不清的〕. “You were supposed to〔应该〕 see a clear, moving plant cellsshaped like clocks.〞“I see what looks like a lot of milk.〞 I would tell him. This, he claimed, was the result of my not having adjusted the microscope properly, so he would readjust it for me, or rather, for himself. And I would look again and see milk.I failed to pass botany that year, and had to wait a year and try again, or I couldn’t graduate. The next term the same professor was eager to explain cell-structure again to his classes. “Well,〞he said to me, happily, “we’re going to see cells this time, aren’t we?〞“Yes, sir,〞 I said. Students to the right of me and to the left of me and in front of me were seeing cells; what’s more, they were. Of course, I didn’t see anything. So the professor and I tried with every adjustment〔调整〕 of the microscope known to man. With only once did I see anything but blackness or the familiar milk, and that time I saw, to my pleasure and amazement, something like stars. These I hurriedly drew. The professor, noting〔注意到〕 my activity, came to me, a smile on his lips〔嘴唇〕 and his eyebrows〔眉毛〕 high in hope. He looked at my cell drawing. “What’s that?〞he asked. “That’s what I saw,〞I said. “You didn’t, you didn’t, you didn’t!〞 he screamed〔尖叫〕, losing control of himself immediately, and he bent over〔弯腰〕 and looked into the microscope. He raised his head suddenly. “That’s your eye!〞he shouted. “You’ve adjusted the mic roscope so that it reflects〔反射〕! You’ve drawn your eye!You were always not able to adjust the microscope properly!〞21. Why couldn’t the writer see the flower cells through the microscope? .A. Because he had poor eyesight.B. Because the microscope didn’t work properly.C. Because he was not able to adjust the microscope properly.D. Because he was just playing jokes on his professor by pretending not to have seen it.22. What does the writer mean by “his eyebrows high in hope〞 in the last paragraph?A. His professor hoped he could perform his task with attention〔认真地〕.B. His professor expected him to have seen the cells and drawn the picture of them.C. His professor wished him to learn how to draw pictures.D. His professor looked forward to seeing all his students finish their drawings.23. What is the thing like stars that the writer saw in the last paragraph?A. His own eye.B. Real stars.C. Something unknown.D. Milk.24. In what writing style did the writer write the passage?A. Realistic〔现实的〕.B. Romantic〔浪漫的〕.C. Serious〔严肃的〕.D. Humorous.BBelow is a housing guide for students going to London.A. It has more offers from accommodation agencies than Renting.B. It gives you personal information about other co-renters.C. Their website is designed mainly for students.D. There are some good bargains.26. A good agent can help you _____.A. know more peopleB. find cheap accommodationC. get the right accommodation quicklyD. get free information about most accommodations27. The information passed on by word of mouth is important because _____.A. it is better than that found through any other sourceB. it helps you find some of the best housing never advertisedC. the final year students always offer better informationD. the landlords have little valuable informationCThe unquestioned(无疑问的) role of a student is to learn as much as possible through whatever means(方式〕 it takes to acquire〔获得〕 knowledge. Teachers and professors are human beings and are therefore not perfect. No one knows the correct answer to every question even when you limit〔限制〕 the questions to a certain 〔领域〕field of study. Having certain skepticism (质疑) about what they are being taught can help students to make the teachers even better by correcting mistakes and misinformation〔错误信息〕.Students certainly have a huge role in their own abilities to learn. Teachers should act more as guides〔指路人〕 along the way rather than try to force〔强迫〕 each student to learn. The best teachers in the world cannot teach an unmotivated〔没有动机的〕 student. If the teacher, for whatever reason, cannot motivate〔鼓励〕 the student, then the student must somehow〔不管怎样〕 find a way to motivate himself or herself. One method of doing this is by becoming an active rather than a passive〔消极的〕 student. The more the student involves〔参与〕 himself or herself in the act of studying, the better he or she can learn. One of the best ways to become more active is simply to ask the teacher or professor questions. Students who passively〔被动地〕 sit in a classroom and take everything that the teacher says for granted〔认为......是理所当然的〕 are not fully using their mental capacities〔才能〕 to learn.Better education comes from teachers who are able to get their students to think about a subject〔科目〕 rather than merely absorb〔吸收〕 a certain amount of information. Havinga healthy skepticism can improve a student’s ability to both think and absorb knowledge in a learning situation.Teachers are human beings and no one is completely〔完全地〕 right all of the time, even in a classroom situation. Perhaps a teacher would simply unconsciously〔无意识地〕 say the wrong word or pass on some misinformation that the teacher truly believed was correct. A student’s question could prevent〔阻止〕 an entire classmates from becoming confused or misinformed〔误导〕.There is of course a fine balance〔平衡〕 between a student having a healthy skepticism and just being a downright〔完全的〕skeptic〔疑心者〕. But with the proper attitude toward learning and a little skepticism, both the students and teachers can improve upon the learning process and maximize〔最大化〕 learning efficiency〔效率〕.28. Which of the following is the author’s main argument〔论点〕?A. Passive learning results from passive teaching in class.B. A healthy skepticism and proper attitude contribute to〔有助于〕 effective learning.C. A healthy skepticism fully depends on students’ motivation and ability.D. A student’s ability plays a huge role in the learning process.29. Being passive learners, the students .A. use lots of their mental ability while studyingB. ask their teachers questions as many as possibleC. can hardly tell the right from the wrong in classD. seldom involve themselves completely in learning30. According to the passage, a good teacher should .A. help the unmotivated students impatientlyB. Instruct〔指导〕 students in the learning processC. make no mistakes in the teaching processD. answer all the questions raised by students31. The author will most probably agree that .A. keeping skepticism to a certain degree〔到达某种程度〕 is importantB. having a passive attitude can ensure the learning processC. taking everything for granted makes a student learn somethingD. a teacher’s ability can not be improved by encouraging doubtDBenefits of Cross-Country Skiing〔越野滑雪〕Cross-country skiing can be enjoyed by a wide range of〔范围广泛的〕 students, from the youngest kindergartners〔幼儿园小孩〕 to those secondary students. It is really a fun activity, providing students a gentle workout outside in winter. While having fun, students can gain physical and mental benefits. The physical〔身体的〕 benefits of cross-country skiing are well known. If we look at Olympic cross-country skiers, we can see the positive〔积极的〕 effects on the body that result from 〔由于〕 training for cross-country skiing. The average〔平均〕 best female cross-country skier carries 11 percent body fat〔体脂〕, and best male skiers carry 5 percent. These percentages 〔比例〕 are well below the average for people who are considered to be athletic --17 percent for females and 10 percent for males. The high number of calories burned while skiing helps to keep skiers slim〔苗条的〕 in a healthy and attractive way.Cross-country skiing is also an efficient〔高效的〕 way to exercise a large number of muscles at once. Because skiers use ski poles〔杆〕 as a means of propulsion〔推进〕, the force that drives〔驱动〕 skiers forward, the upper body gets much more of workout. Of course, the leg muscles also do their fair share〔公平分配〕. People who use cross-country skiing as a workout over several weeks will discover that the muscles of their entire body increase in strength. Cross-country skiing on a regular basis has a tremendous〔极大的〕effect on a person’s cardiovascular〔心血管的〕 system. In addition to gaining strength in the muscles of the upper and lower body, people who use cross-country skiing as a workout method over several weekswill also discover that their heart is stronger. A strong heart pumps〔跳动〕 more efficiently, sending out more blood to the muscles with each contraction(收缩). Through weeks of skiing, people often discover that their resting〔静止的〕 heart rate has decreased〔降低〕. Highly trained Olympic cross-country skiers have resting heart rates between 28 and 40 beats per minute. Compare that to the resting heart rate of the average person, which is 60 to 80 beats per minute! The benefits of cross-country skiing extend〔延伸〕 beyond overall〔全部的〕 general health. It also has mental benefits. A lot of evidence exists indicating〔说明〕 that regular physical activity increases the release〔释放〕 of mood-lifting endorphin (内啡肽) in the body. After one of the energetic and fun skiing lessons, students will be smiling and laughing; they will be relaxed and in a better mood than when they started class. Students will leave class with a sense of accomplishment〔成就感〕, knowing that they have developed new skills in a fun activity.Cross-country skiing is a great way to work〔锻炼〕 the total body. Now more and more students are taking part in this exercise outside during the winter months. They are enjoying it and benefiting from it!32. The underlined word “workout〞 means_______.A. mannerB. opportunityC. applicationD. exercise33. According to the passage, we can learn that cross-country skiing ______.A. can balance out〔相抵〕the skiers’ increased caloriesB. requires the use of most muscle groupsC. can increase the athletes’ resting heart ratesD. offers students a only way to keep fit34. How does the author prove the benefits of skiing in the fifth paragraph?A. By giving explanations〔解释〕.B. By giving data.C. By making comparisons〔作比拟〕.D. By giving comments.35. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?A BC DCP: Central point〔中心要点〕 P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion 第二节〔一共5小题;每一小题2分,满分是10 分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项里面选出能填入空白处的最正确选项。

I thought that Mary would jump on the luggage carrier (行李架) over the back tire when I was riding. Mom knew exactly what I was thinking. “Don’t ride the bike with Mary on the back,” she said. “It’s too dangerous. You could kill yourself. Take turns.”I nodded, but I was thinking I could handle this. A few minutes later, I turned right to a wide road. “Jump on the back,” I told Mary. I rode fast, laughing as the wind blew through our hair. It was exciting, until the handlebar (车把) started shaking. The front tire dropped into a drain (下水道) and I fell off the bike, still holding the handlebar. My face, hands, and knees crashed into the pavement. The pain in my mouth was unbearable, and I tasted blood. I turned towards Mary who was on the ground, holding her knee and crying. Seconds later, it seemed that my mom’s car stopped next to us. I wanted Mom to say, “Oh, my poor sweetheart. Let me hug you and everything will be fine.”However, my mom only said, “What have you done to your face? Vanessa, look at what you’ve done!” Mom wasn’t the gentle “I love you, sweetie” type.Sometimes, I thought Mom had no mercy. But in her own way, she was holding me tighter than I could understand — she was teaching me the lesson I needed. “You did it — deal with it and learn from it. In 1985, two days before he died, he gave that ticket to Cave —ticket number 00001. “It created a fascination (酷爱) with the bridge that I have to this day,” says Cave. And it started him on a long journey towards another Harbour Bridge first.Cave came up with a simple but daring idea — lease (租用) the bridge from the government and allow ordinary people to climb Australia’s greatest icon. “I thought it would take two years,” says Cave, 63. “What appeared like a simple job turned into some very complex activities. But in business, you just have to keep going —it’s about having self-belief.” Indeed, it took him nine years and ten months to convince t he NSW government to allow his dream to be a reality. “Six years were wasted dealing with some very restrictive officials,” says Cave. They threw difficulty after difficulty in his path with doubts over the safety of the climbers and the motorists below — the list went on and on.Through it all, Cave held the ticket tightly. It was a constant reminder of why, to Cave, this fight wasworth winning. Finally, in 1995, came the breakthrough (突破) he’d worked for — a letter arrived from WorkCover, the state’s oc cupational health and safety insurer, backing his idea.Since opening on October 1, 1998, over 1.8 million people have climbed the 1,439 steps to the top of the bridge, making BridgeClimb a $50-million-a-year success and a major international tourist attraction.8. Cave at first thought his dream .A. was a hard taskB. was easy to come trueC. would get support from the governmentD. would become some complex activities9. What was the restrictive officials’ attitude towards Cave’s id ea?A. Cautious.B. Approving.C. Doubtful.D. Enthusiastic.10. What inspired Cave to fight for his dream during the hard situation?A. WorkCover.B. Harbour Bridge.C. BridgeClimb.D. Ticket 00001.11. The text mainly tells us that .A. not every dream in our life is very easy to come trueB. you should have self-belief even faced with great difficultyC. family members always give you the inspiration for successD. life seems a long journey towards another Harbour Bridge firstDA habitat is a natural area where wildlife lives undisturbed. Most animals and plants have become endangered not because they have been killed on purpose but because their habitats are being destroyed.Human activities have changed or destroyed habitats for thousands of years. The natural habitats in almost every country in the world have been affected in some way. Let us take Britain as an example. Nowadays most of the British countryside consists of fields of grass grown for cattle and sheep or crops for humans. If you had lived about a thousand years ago, the countryside would have looked very different for most of Britain was covered with forest. Now there are only small areas of woodland across the country, one of the largest areas being the New Forest in Hampshire. Throughout the centuries humans have steadily (持续地) cut down the trees to make room for the human population which has increased greatly particularly during the past 200 years or so. The trees have been replaced by houses, factories, schools, roads, farmland etc. Hedgerows (灌木篱笆) which were planted by humans as boundaries (边界) around fields have replaced woodlands. As you may imagine, the great loss of habitats has affected the wildlife that lives in them. Large animals such as the Brown Bear and the Auroch became extinct in Britain during the 10th century mainly due to destruction (粉碎) of their forest habitats. Other British species of animals and plants have become extinct during the last few hundred years and many more are endangered today. Although many organizations are working to protect wildlife, natural habitats are still being destroyed.12. The text mainly tells us .A. what a habitat isB. how to protect wildlifeC. habitat destruction makes animals endangeredD. how to prevent the environment from being destroyed13. According to the text, animals are endangered mainly because .A. people kill wild animals on purposeB. the environment is seriously pollutedC. humans haven’t worked to protect themD. the human population has increased greatly14. We can learn from the text that .A. the New Forest is the largest woodland in the worldB. the Brown Bear has been extinct for many years in BritainC. humans destroyed natural habitats mainly by growing cropsD. humans planted hedgerows to make home for cattle and sheep15. Which of the following may the writer agree with?A. Setting up reserves is the best way to protect animals.B. We can hardly stop animals from being endangered.C. Things will become better for wild animals in Britain.D. Human activities began to affect wildlife 200 years ago.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)按照短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

They have more money, more funding and better resources and they don’t have the more challenging students we get in the state sector. That was before I became a teacher-researcher in a two-year project led by my college, aiming to find the best way to support high-ability students. With funding from the London Schools Excellence Fund, we teamed up with some of the country’s top private schools, like Eton and St Paul’s, as well as a number of state schools, to find out how to bring the knowledge-rich learning that characterizes independent schools into the state sector. Before the project, I hadn’t had much contact with people who had been educated there. But the first thing I found when I visited was that teachers are the same. In the independent sector, they have challenges too—just different ones. After two years, our research project has produced a huge set of findings. One of the most useful findings was the importance of independent learning habits outside the classroom. I realized that although I was always telling students that they needed to do four to five hours of private study a week, they didn’t have a clear idea of what this could look like beyond making notes. So I set them different activities including reading articles, doing activities and completing examination questions.I started to put much more emphasis on activities outside the classroom, like researching topics beyond the syllabus(教学大纲) or discussing things in the news. And I praised anyone who asked questions in class, so we created a culture where students were proud to ask a question rather than seeing it as a way of flagging upthe fact that they hadn’t understood something. My research is beginning to have a real influence. My students now come to class and tell me what they want to know about. But they no longer expect me to do the research—they want to find out for themselves. At the end of the year I gave students a questionnaire on independent learning. One wrote, “Independent learning would limit the help I got from other students. It helps you to think for yourself.”4.What did the author say about independent school students before her research? A.They were troublemakers.B.They enjoyed excellent learning conditions.C.They performed worse than state school students.D.They faced the same challenges as state school students.5.Why did the author join the project?A.To introduce good learning methods to state schools.B.To exchange teaching ideas with other teachers.C.To partner with other schools in education.D.To find enough funds for state schools.6.What changes did the author make in her classes?A.She focused on group learning. B.She worked out a different syllabus. C.She encouraged independent learning. D.She carried out various activities in class.7.How is the author’s research going?A.It has made a big difference. B.It has failed to make progress.C.I t is questioned by her students. D.It involves many more students.CThe University of Birmingham is the first excellent UK Russell Group university to announce that it will accept the "Gaokao" exam for high-flying Chinese students wishing to join its undergraduate courses in 2019. High school students who complete the "National Higher Education Entrance Examination", or Gaokao, with top grades will be able to apply for direct entry onto Birmingham degree programmes without first completing a foundation year which is a routine for the freshman.Gaokao is usually taken by students in their last year of senior high school and, every year, each province in China sets the grades required to gain admission to its universities. He is 53 years old. Most of his adult life has been a losing struggle against debt and misfortune. A war injury has made his left hand stop functioning, and he has often been in prison. Driven by heaven-knows-what motives, he determines to write a book. The book turns out to be one that has appealed to the world for more than 350 years. That former prisoner was Cervantes, and the book was Don Quixote(《堂吉诃德》). And the story poses an interesting question: why do some people discover new vitality and creativity to the end of their days, while others go to seed long before? We’ve all known people who run out of steam before they reach life’s halfway mark. I’m not talking about those who fail to get to the top. We can’t all get there. I’m talking about people who have stoppe d learning on growing because they have adopted the fixed attitudes and opinions that all too often come with passing years. Most of us, in fact, progressively narrow the variety of our lives. We succeed in our field of specialization and then become trapped in it. Nothing surprises us. We lose our sense of wonder. But, if we are willing to learn, the opportunities are everywhere. The things we learn in maturity seldom involve information and skills. We learnto bear with the things we can’t change. We lear n to avoid self-pity. We learn that however much we try to please, some people are never going to love us—an idea that troubles at first but is eventually relaxing. With high motivation and enthusiasm, we can keep on learning. Then we will know how important it is to have meaning in our life. However, we can achieve meaning only if we have made a commitment to something larger than our own little egos(自我), whether to loved ones, to fellow humans, to work, or to some moral concept. Many of us equate(视……等同于) “commitment” with such “caring” occupations as teaching and nursing. But doing any ordinary job as well as one can is in itself an admirable commitment. People who work toward such excellence—whether they are driving a truck, or running a store—make the world better just by being the kind of people they are. They’ve learned life’s most valuable lesson.12.The passage starts with the story of Cervantes to show that ________.A.loss of freedom stimulates one’s creativityB.age is not a barrier to achieving on e’s goalC.misery inspires a man to fight against his fateD.disability cannot stop a man’s pursuit of success13.What could be inferred from Paragraph 4?A.Those who dare to try often get themselves trapped.B.Those who tend to think back can hardly go ahead.C.Opportunity favors those with a curious mind.D.Opportunity awaits those with a cautious mind.14.What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 5?A.A tough man can tolerate suffering.B.A wise man can live without self-pity.C.A man should try to satisfy people around him.D.A man should learn suitable ways to deal with life.15.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A.To provide guidance on leading a meaningful adult life.B.To stress the need of shouldering responsibilities at work.C.To state the importance of generating motivation for learning.D.To suggest a way of pursuing excellence in our lifelong career.EIf you’re feeling empty, you’re not alone. Many of us feel empty in different ways. For instance, you might feel empty because something is missing in your life. Or the emptiness might stem from slowly abandoning yourselves, not listening to your own hopes and desires. Abandoning yourselves can also spark anxiety, depression, guilt and shame, 16.. Here are several suggestions to help you out.Acknowledge the emptiness. If you're experiencing emptiness that's more like a gaping hole, acknowledge it, and be gentle with yourself. 17. If this emptiness is because of a loved one's passing, get angry with yourself. In that case you learn to live life alongside that hole of missing that person.Explore your feelings of emptiness. Scientists suggested exploring the below questions. We can do this while journaling, taking a walk or drinking a cup of tea.●Do I tell myself positive things?●What am I trying to prove or win?●18.●Am I blaming myself for things that are out of my control?19. Fight the urge to turn to the outside world for fulfillment. Instead of trying to fill the emptiness with drugs, alcohol, TV, computer games or anything else, look within, and spend time with yourself. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but the more you practice devoting time and energy to yourself and caring for yourself, the less present those empty feelings, will be.20.Whether you are experiencing difficult relationships, losses, or feeling a lack of purpose or mining, you are worthy of a fulfilling and meaningful life. A.Explore your current feelings.B.Spend with yourself every day.C.How do you handle your emptiness?D.Den t heat yourself up for feeling this way.E. Have I been judging myself or comparing myself to others?F. It's important to acknowledge and accept your feelings of emptiness.G. Do you too much time on TV, computer games or anything else?二、完形填空(一共40小题,每小题1.5分,总计60分)AThe Value of EducationI have just started my job as an English Language Assistant in the Parisian suburbs.I was 21 by how rich Paris really is. The true value of a diamond is never known until it has been cut. Once cut successfully, its value can increase a thousand times. It’s easy to understand why the owner of the Joker diamond went to the best diamond cutter he knew, Kaplan. The cutter studied the diamond for twelve whole months. When he felt he was ready to start work, he discovered a flaw (瑕疵). He had to begin with his calculations all over again, or he might have made the stone useless. Six more months passed, and Kaplan finally said to the owner, “I am ready to start my work. There will be one excellent diamond that will be comparable to any in the world, plus eleven small diamonds of first-class quality. ” Kaplan waited a few more days until he felt he was in the best physical and mental (精神的)condition possible. The owner of the voice was a very pretty young lady. I said to her that I was going tobuy a box of Christmas cookies but the only ones left were not to my liking. The lady told me that just opposite Cockhedge in Superdrug they had lots of cookies. I said, “I’m not going to bother now. I had enough of shops and I’m going home. ”The assistant from the Customer Service came across at this time saying “If there is anyone in the line with a few items in their basket, none of which needed to be weighed, I will check out their groceries at the desk. ” Because I had the sprouts which needed to be weighed, the young lady accepted the offer and walked away waving goodbye.Eventually my turn came at the checkout. I was walking away when I met my new friend once again who handed me a beautiful box of Christmas cookies. With a big hug she said “Hope you have a lovely Christmas. ” She had been into Superdrug to buy me the cookies while I was still queuing in Cockhedge. What a generosity to a stranger! Life is a learning process. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day we learn to handle various situations.LoveLove plays a pivotal role in our life. Love makes you feel wanted. Without love a person could go hayward(不归路)and also become cruel and ferocious. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who shower us with unconditional love and care, they teach us about what is right and wrong, good and bad. But we always tend to take this for granted. It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands and becomes sensitive to others’ feelings. Kids make a person responsible and mature and help us to understand life better.Happiness and SorrowMaterialistic happiness is short-lived, but happiness achieved by bringing a smile on others’ face gives a certain level of fulfillment. Peace of mind is the main link to happiness. No mind is happy without peace. We realize the true worth of happiness when we are in sorrow. Sorrow is basically due to death of a loved one, failure and despair. But these things are temporary and pass away.Failure and SuccessFailure is the path to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings in money, fame, pride and self-respect. Here it becomes very important to keep our head on our shoulder. The only way to show our gratitude to God for bestowing success on us is by being humble, modest, courteous and respectful to the less fortunate ones.Hope and DespairHope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day. Nothing remains the same, we have only one choice—keep moving on in life and be hopeful.Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is beyond our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dull. So the only alternative is to work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.12. Politics.C. Education.D. Lifestyles.14. How is the passage organized?A. In order of rules.B. In order of frequency.C. By making comparisons.D. In order of importance.15. What’s the purpose of the passage?A. To encourage people to love each other.B. To tell people how to deal with happiness and sorrow.C. To remind people of keeping having a beautiful dream.D. “aha!” moment regarding handwriting.I had in my hand a sheet of paper with handwritten instructions on it for some sort of editorial task.It occurred at first that I did not recognize the handwriting, and then I realized whose it must be.I finally became aware of the fact that I had been working with this colleague for at least a year, maybe two,and yet I did not recognize her handwriting at that point. It was a very important event in the computerization of life—a sign that the informal, friendly communication of people working together in an office had changed from notes in pen to instant messages and emails. There was a time when our workdays were filled with little letters, and we recognized one another’s handwriting the way we knew voices or faces. As a child visiting my father’s office,I was pleased to recognize,in little notes on the desks of his staff, the same handwriting I would see at home in the notes he would leave on the fridge—except that those notes were signed “dad” instead of “RFW”.All this has been on my mind because of the talk about The Rise and Fall of Handwriting,a book by Florey. She shows in her book a deep concern about the fall of handwriting and the failure of schools to teach children to write well, but many others argue that people in a digital age can’t be expected to learn to hold a pen.I don’t buy it.I don’t want to see anyone cut off from the expressive, personal associations that a pen still promotes better than a digital keyboard does. For many a biographer, part of really getting to know their subjects is learning to read their handwriting. What some people advocate is teaching one of the many attractive handwritings based on the handwriting of 16thcentury Italy. That may sound impossibly grand—as if they want kids to learn to draw by copying classical paintings. However, they have worked in many school systems.1.Why was the author surprised at not recognizing his colleague’s handwriting?A.He had worked with his colleague long enough.B.His colleague’s handwriting was so beautiful.C.His colleague’s handwriting was so terrible.D.He still had a lot of work to do.2.People working together in an office used to schools B.attract more attentionC.are used only between friends D.carry more message Ⅳ.阅读填空The traditional American school year begins in late August or early September. It ends in May or June, followed An official reportC. An exhibition guide.D. An art show review.BA typical lion tamer〔驯兽师〕in people’s mind is an entertainer holding a whip( 鞭) at a chair. The whip gets all of the attention, but it’s mostly for show. In reality, it’ the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion’s face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair. How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion? How often do you have something you want to achieve (e.g. lose weight., start a business, travel more)—only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress? This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best, the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information. The end result is that we feel like we can’t focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving. It doesn’t have to be that way. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing,. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go, something you want to accomplish, someone you want to become…take immediate action. If you’re clear about where you want to go, the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way.4. Why does the lion tamer use a chair?A. To get ready for a fight.B. To entertain the audience.C. To trick the lionD. To show off his skills..5. In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair?A. They have to do something for showB. They find it hard to make changes.C. They hold on to the wrong things.D. They feel puzzled over choices.6. When the world is “ waving a chair in your face〞, you’re advised to _____A. make a quick decisionB. wait for a better chanceC. break your old habitsD. ask for clear guidance7. What is the author’s attitude towards the expert mentioned in Paragraph3?A. Respectful.B. Supportive.C. Tolerant.D. Doubtful.CAs more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,000-7,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars from a number of organizations —UNESCO and National Geographic among them—have for many years been documenting dying languages and the cultures they reflect.Mark Turin, a scientist at the MacmillanCentreYaleUniversity, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethno linguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India , Nepal, Bhutan, and China . But he is not content to simply record these voices before they disappear without record. At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of importantmaterials-including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes—which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection. Now, through the two organizations that he has founded –the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project —Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, found in libraries and stories around the world, available not just to scholars but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.8. What is Turin’s book based on?A. His personal experience in Nepal.B. The cultural studiesC. The documents available at Yale.D. His language research in Bhutan.9. What does “that tradition’ in Paragraph 3 refer to ?A. Telling stories about language usersB. Having full records of the languagesC. Living with the native speaker.D. Writing books on language teaching.10. Which of the following best describe Turin’s work?A. Design, experiment and report.B. Collect, protect and reconnectC. Record, repair and reward..D. Write, sell and donate.二、七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最优选项。

内蒙古二中2021-2021学年高二英语下学期第二次周考试题〔无答案〕第一局部:阅读理解In its early history, Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses, and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at the time went something like this: A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street. Asked if he needs help, he replies, "No, thanks. I've got a good horse under me."The city planner decided to build an underground drainage (排水) system, but there simply wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced me the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12 feet. This of course created a new problem: dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago. Building owners were faced with a choice: either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into main floors, or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level. Small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building? That's where George Pullman came in. He had developed some house-moving skillssuccessfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel, Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building's foundation. One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly. Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stay open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn't even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago's early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago's waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city's next step was to clean the polluted river.1. The author mentions the joke to show ______.A horses were fairly useful in ChicagoB Chicago's streets were extremely muddyC Chicago was very dangerous in the springD the Chicago people were particularly humorous2. The city planners were convinced by Ellis Chesbrough to_______.A. get rid of the street dirtB. lower the Chicago RiverC. fight against heavy floodsD. build the pipes above ground3. The underlined word "hoist" in Paragraph 4 means "_______".A changeB liftC repairD decorate4. What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel?A It went on smoothly as intended.B It interrupted the business of the hotel.C It involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews.D It separated the building from its foundation.5. The passage is mainly about the early Chicago's ______.A. popular life styles and their influencesB. environmental disasters and their causesC. engineering problems and their solutionsD. successful businessmen and their achievementsBEvery scientific field uses the scientific method to conduct experiments. Performing experiments is very important in the field of psychology. Before beginning a study, however, any scientist who wishes to perform an experiment should be familiar with the steps of the scientific method. 6◆ Form a hypothesis 〔假设〕. It is an educated guess about what will happen during the study. 7 Coming up with a hypothesis before you start can help guide your experiment.◆Plan out a study. Planning out the experiment is essential because the psychologist needs to know if they have time, materials, and testing area prepared beforehand. This step also helps the scientist to determine if they will be performing descriptive or experimental research. The ideal situation is to alwaysperform experimental research. 8 Descriptive research simply collects data regarding the problem and forms a hypothesis according to the data.◆ Collect data. 9 If the data collected is not recorded and organized, the entire efforts of the study may be wasted. The best way to do this may be to record the proceedings so that no details are lost.◆ Analyze the data. Once all the data has been collected and organized, it must be analyzed. Using previous research or scientific information about the problem, the psychologist must apply the new data gathered.◆ Publish the information learned. The final step of the scientific method in psychology is publishing the results of the study. 10 Most psychological experiments are published in scientific journals.A. It is based on scientific facts, not just opinions.B. Read on to find out how to use the scientific method in psychology.C. Before psychologists start the experiment, they must plan out the steps.D. This helps other psychologists to learn about and use the new information.E. The scientific method has proved to be an effective way to conduct research.F. To fully understand the study, each part of the experiment must be recorded.G. Sometimes, however, this is impossible and descriptive research will have to be used.第二节:根据文章内容,从选项里面选出能填入空白处的最正确选项并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Here are some amusing stories about him. When he arrived in New York to be a professor at Princeton University, Einstein felt stressed about visitors and newsmen. So his friends took him off the ship secretly before it docked (靠上码头) and hurried him away by car.Einstein said that only twelve people at that time understood his Theory of Relativity (相对论),although more than nine hundred books had been written to explain it.Mrs. Einstein admitted that even she did not understand the Theory of Relativity; but she understood something far more important for a wife; she understood her husband. She used to invite some friends in for tea and then she would ask her husband to come downstairs and join them.“No!〞 Einstein would say with anger. He simply couldn’t stand those “interruptions (打搅)〞.But Mrs. Einstein persuaded her husband with great patience and had him drink tea with them and take a good rest.Mrs. Einstein said that he r husband liked order in his thinking, but he didn’t like it in his life. He did whatever he wanted to.Einstein had only two rules of conduct (行为准那么):one was “Don’t be restrained (限制) by any rule〞, and the other was “Be independent from the opinions of others〞.Einstein led a very simple life. When he went out, he was always in old clothes, and seldom did he wear a hat. He liked to whistle and sing in the bathroom. He shaved with the same soap as he used for his bath. It seems strange that the great scientist trying to solve the mysteries of the universe should consider that using two pieces of soap made life too complicated.Einstein said he was happy because he didn’t want money or titles or foolish praises. He made his own happiness out of such simple things as playing the violin and sailing his boat.Einstein’s violin brought him more joy than anything else in his life. And she went to learn nursing in Germany and France. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing home. During the Crimean War in 1854 she went with a group of thirty eight nurses to the front hospitals. What they saw there was terrible. Dirt and death were everywhere to be seen — and smelled. The officer there did not want any woman to tell him how to run a hospital, either. But the brave nurse went to work.Florence used her own money and some from friends to buy clothes, beds, medicine and food for the men. Her only pay was in smiles from the lips of dying soldiers. But they were more than enough for this kind woman. After she returned to England, she was honored for her services by Queen Victoria. But Florence said that her work had just begun. She raised money to build the Nightingale Home for Nurses in London. And now he hopes to use it for more than just his son's hope after seeing the children's reaction to the Batmobile.Based on the number of failures he had seen in car groups, he estimated that only about one in 50 attempted constructions was actually finished and he realized what an incredible opportunity he had.Mr. Blackburn started the project at the beginning of 2018 after hearing a friend in the US was doing the same thing. It started with importing an outer shell overseas, before picking brains of a friend who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of howto build the car. With the help of his friend, Mr. Blackburn built the Batmobile in 18 months with the cost reaching six figures.Mr. Blackburn hoped to add a flamethrower(喷火器)onto the back of the vehicle and said he had thought about building the more recent Batman Tumbler from the series film Dark Knight. Though Mr. Blackburn encountered plenty of difficulties to get over during the construction, in September 2019, the car made its first show at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba, before being used by Blackburn's son for his hope.“It was great. It was so good to see the kids' and adults' excitement at seeing the Batmobile. "Mr. Blackburn said. As a result, the car lovers hope to make the car work on the roads assoon as possible, so he can visit sick children and take them out with his son.4.What is Craig Blackburn's initial purpose of making the Batmobile?A.To realize his son's dream.B.To donate it to sick children.C.To pay his respects to the film Dark Knight.D.To show off at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba.5.How did Blackburn feel about the car-making at first?A.Hopeful.B.Uncertain.C.Impossible.D.Confused.6.How did Blackburn's friend help him?A.By offering him financial support.B.By making an outer shell for him.C.By sharing the knowledge of building cars.D.By telling him the backgroud of the car factory.7.What is the car lovers' expectation of the Batmobile?A.It can be displayed around the world.B.It will be driven soon on the roads.C.It can change the lives of sick children.D.It will appear in the next film about Batman.A trip to the theater, museum or art gallery could help you live longer. And the more often, the better, a new study suggests. Researchers from University College London (UCL ) found that people engaged in the arts more frequently had a 31% lower risk of dying early when compared to those who didn't. Even going to the theater or museum once or twice a year was linked with a 14% lower risk.“ While other health behaviors like smoking, alcohol and exercise are undoubtedly bigger predictors of the rate of death, these leisure and pleasure activities people don't think as a health related activity do support good health and long life," said Fancourt, an associate professor at UCL's Research Department of Behavioral Science and Health. How often an individual engaged in art activities, also including exhibitions, concerts and opera but not cinema, was measured at the start of the study in 2004 to 2005. The study looked at a range of economic, health and social factors to try and explain why there is a link between “ arts engagement" and living longer, although as an observational study it can't establish cause. Part of the reason, the study said, comes down to social and economic differences among those who go and don't go to museums, exhibitions and art galleries. Wealth, they found, explained about 9% of the association. Cognitive (认知的) differences, social engagement and mentalhealth also played a role.“ Things like free time and occupational status made no material difference," said Fancourt,“but engagement in arts can reduce stress and build creativity that allows people to adapt to changing circumstances. It also helps people build social capital — accessing emotional support and information that helps people age more successfully. A greater sense of purpose could also play a role. If this (study) is added to the larger body of evidence, we are getting an increasingly rich picture on how arts can benefit health and it's not about one single outcome. It can have wide ranging benefits and support healthier lives lived longer. This study did not look at the effects of taking part in art-related activities but a World Health Organization review of available evidence published last year found that both receptive participation, like visiting a museum, and active participation, like singing in a choir, had health benefits.8.How is the text mainly developed?A.By giving examples.B.By making a comparison.C.By listing data.D.By presenting facts.9.What does the new study suggest?A.Engagement in art activities could help people live longer.B.Arts engagement plays a big part in people's good health.C.Smoking, alcohol and exercise are good to people's health.D.Smoking, alcohol and exercise could lower the risk of death.10.Which of the following is not much of an art activity?A.Going to the theatre.B.Attending a concert.C.Visiting the museum.D.Watching a movie.11.What can we infer from the text?A.Arts engagement depends on whether we have free time.B.Social and economic differences affect our arts engagement greatly.C.Participating in art activities can bring us many health benefits.D.This new study is scientifically confirmed.DPeople feel good about recycling, maybe even more so when it comes to electronics. While electronics recycling isn't bad, making it a panacea (万能药) for the e-waste problem we currently have certainly is. Unfortunately, that's how we think of recycling — and companies tojump on that trend to appear more“ green".A case in point : Apple. In 2016, there was lots of report on Liam, a robot able to dismantle (拆卸) an iPhone in just 11 seconds — a good way to recycle 1. 2 million units a year. That sounds amazing until you take into account the fact that Apple had actually sold 231 millionnew iPhones the year before. Liam, actually, is the perfect symbol for recycling in the field ofhigh-tech: a drop of green water in an ocean of pollution.According to a recent UN report, the US produces about 6. 3 million tons or 14% of the world's electronic waste. Worldwide, almost 45 million tons of electronic waste were producedin 2016. Among them, only 20% had been recycled in some shape or form. The remaining 80% made its way to a more environmentally damaging end at the landfill (垃圾填埋场) .Of course, we can say it's time to double our recycling efforts. However, the huge amountof e-waste is impossible to cope with. The UN report points out that while there is an increased focus on recycling today compared to the past, the effort to reuse used devices simply can'tkeep pace with the high consumption rates for new devices. In their environmental responsibility report, Apple admits that 77% of the carbon footprintof their electronics comes from their manufacture, versus (相对于) 17% comes from its actual use. The environmental effect of replacing a device, even if it is recycled after, remains significant.12.Which of the following can best describe Liam?A.It's useful but can't make a big difference.B.It's energy-saving but too expensive.C.It's well-made but won't become popular.D.It's advanced but impractical.13.What caused the e-waste recycling problem?A.Few high-tech companies.B.Not enough recycling efforts.C.High demand for new electronics.D.Difficult recycling processes.14.What does the author think of the electronics recycling?A.It is very effective.B.It is quite good.C.It is environmentally damaging.D. It is far from“ green" recycling.15.What can be the best title for the text?A. A Recent UN Report on E-Waste ProblemB.The Limitation of Electronics RecyclingC. A Good Way to Cope With E-WasteD.The Responsibility for Apple to Decrease E-Waste第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

英语试题第二局部阅读理解〔一共两节,满分是40分〕第一节〔一共15小题,每一小题2分,一共30分〕AMost students spend their school days sitting at desks learning. Aurelious Woolfolk, however, does a lot more than sit at a desk when he is in school. He scrambles up high ladders, walks down the sides of buildings, and rides in a fire engine. He is learning to be a firefighter at the New Haven Fire Academy.Woolfolk and 28 other students are currently learning what it takes to become a firefighter. Classes at the fire academy, which is in Connecticut, last for about 22 weeks. For two days each week, the students sit in a classroom to learn science, math, and emergency medicine. They learn the science of fires, how to calculate water pressure, and how to treat medical emergencies. During the other three days, the students go outside and learn how to hook hoses to fire hydrants(消防栓), climb buildings, rescue people trapped in burning buildings, and many other things.“Firefighters have to know lots of d ifferent things,〞 said Pablo Menendez, an instructor at the school. “We have to treat medical emergencies, know how to handle dangerous chemicals, and rescue people who have fallen from cliffs.〞Teamwork is one of the most important lessons students learn at the school. “Working together saves lives,〞said Capt. William Seward, the director of the academy. “Students need to learn that they are part of a team.〞Fighting fires is not easy. The suits and equipment a firefighter wears weigh about 40 pounds.Firefighters are very busy. In New Haven, they respond to 32,000 emergency calls a yearEach time firefighters go out, they know they might not come back. Across the United States about 100 firefighters die each year. “That’s why the lessons learned here at th e academy are so important,〞said Seward. “What they learn here can save their lives.〞Firefighters know how dangerous their jobs are. Their training helps them overcome their heights and fires. “When you’re up there on the ladder looking down, it’s scary,〞 said one student. “To do this job, you’ve got to wipe out the fear.〞 Firefighters overcome their fear for one reason. “I wanted to help other people,〞said Leah Harwin. “I think it is important to help other people whenever you can.〞21.According to the passage, which activity must a student at the Fire Academy complete?A. handling dangerous chemicalsB. swimming under pressureC. jumping from a buildingD. sitting in the classroom22.Why is it important for students at the Fire Academy to have lessons inside and outside the classroom?A. Firefighters need to practice emotional skills to calm people down.B. Firefighters need to practice mental and physical skills to succeed.C. Firefighters need to practice wearing heavy gear to get used to the weight.D. Firefighters need to practice climbing a ladder to overcome a fear of height 23.What is the purpose of the passage?A. to describe the activities at the New Haven Fire AcademyB. to inform the reader of the dangers of being a firefighterC .to compare the New Haven Fire Academy to public schoolD. to force students to attend the New Haven Fire AcademyBSome colors people see late at night could cause signs of clinical(临床的)depression(沮丧). That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals(个人) who live or work in low levels of light overnight(整夜) can develop clinicaldepression. Doctors use the word “clinical depression〞 to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide. In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(仓鼠)to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night. The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light, a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light. After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is that these animals didn’t show any sleep uneasiness(不安) at all but they did mess up biological clock genes and they did show depressive sign while if they were in the dim(微弱)red light, they did not.〞Randy Nelson notes that photosensitive(感光)cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleep-wake cycle. He says there’s a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness. 24.Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because __________.A.they are similar to humans in dealing with colorsB.they are easy to observe and studyC.they are sensitive to colors like human beingsD.they are active at night and sleep during the day25.What sign shows that the hamsters are being depressed?A.They drink less sugary water.B.They don’t sleep well.C.Their eyesight becomes worse.D.Their energy level becomes low.26.__________ tends to cause hamsters to be depressed.27.What can help people who work late at night to avoid being depressed?A.Not being exposed to dim red light when using computers.B.Equipping their computer screens to put it more in the reddish light.C.Living or working in low levels of light overnight.D.Going to see doctors of clinical depression regularly for help.CAlmost all theme park accidents can be prevented. Here, based on coverage of theme park safety, are some tips to help you and your family stay safe on your next visit. If you are visiting with a child, take a moment to explain the ride to them, and tell them how they should behave. They are depending upon you to keep them safe. Set a good example for them by following the rules of the park, and make sure that they know you expect them to follow those rules, too.Tell them to stay seated, to hold the grab bar or put their hands in the laps, and not to stick their knees and feet outside a ride vehicle. Make them look to you for the okay to get on or off a ride, too. And never put a crying child on a ride. If your child starts to cry, let others pass you in line until your child is calmed. Or, gently exit the queue and find something more relaxing to do.Young kids can’t keep an adult’s pace in a theme park. Let them take plenty of breaks.“Kids get tired,〞 said TPI reader Matt Johnson, a father of four. “Tired kids make parents even more tired. And tired kids and parents may get hurt —physically and emotionally.〞He advises that parents plan a mid-day break, perhaps a swim back at the hotel, to avoid mid-day heat and crowds. “You will see cranky f amilies having a miserable time while you are refreshedand having a great evening.〞28. The second paragraph tells readers that ________.A. children should be trained to be more independentB. adults should tell children some safety rules firstlyC. adults should set a good example to behave well in a theme parkD. there is a danger to take young children to visit a theme park29. Which of the following is NOT right for children who are taking the rides?A. They cannot put their hands away from the grab bar.B. They are forbidden to put their knees or feet out.C. They should ask adults’ permission first to get on a ride.D. Without adults’ okay sign, children shouldn’t get off a ride.30. If your child begins to cry just when he is going to take a ride, you should ________.A. tell him to be relaxedB. make him share your interestC. give up the present activityD. encourage him to be brave31. We may infer from Matt Johnson’s words that ________.A. he doesn’t like to visit a theme park with his ch ildrenB. parents with many children may be tired of visiting a theme parkC. not all the families are relaxed or happy when they visit a theme parkD. visitors should arrange everything carefully before startingDWhat will power your house in the future?Nuclear, wind,or solar power?According to scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US,it might be leaves — but artificial (人造的) ones.Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known as photosynthesis (光用).Now researchers have found a way to imitate this seemingly simple process. The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a special silicon chip with catalysts (催化剂).Similar to natural leaves,it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuel cell, which uses those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top of a house or beside the house.Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries. “One can imagine villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology,〞 said Nocera at a conference of the American Chemical Society. The artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensive and unstable for practical use. The new leaf,by contrast,is made of cheap materials, easy to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies,Nocera showed that an artificial leaf prototype (原型) could operate continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity. The wonderful improvements come from Nocera's recent discovery of several powerful, new and inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy transformation inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight. Right now,the new leaf is about 10 times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the device can run in whatever water is available;that is,it doesn't need pure water. This is important for some countries that don't have access to pure water. With the goal to “make each home its own power station〞and “give energy to th e poor〞,scientists believe that the new technology could be widely used in developing countries, especially in India and rural China.32. What does the underlined word “imitate〞 in Paragraph 2 mean?A. produceB. holdC. preventD. copy33.Which of the following orders correctly shows how the artificial leaf is used to produceelectricity?a.artificial leaves split water into hydrogen and oxygenb.the hydrogen and oxygen gases are stored in a fuel cellc.the artificial leaves are put in waterd.the fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricityA.c,a,b,d B.c,b,a,dC.b,c,a,d D.c,a,d,b34.The purpose of the scientists at MIT in developing the new artificial leaf is to________.A.build up more power stations in the worldB.provide cheaper energy for developing countriesC.offer people in developing countries access to pure waterD.gain a deeper understanding of the photosynthesis process35.The main idea of this passage is ________.A.an introduction to the history of artificial leavesB.a mixture of water power and solar energyC.giving energy to the poorD.an invention copying photosynthesis第二节七选五〔一共5题每一小题2分一共10分〕How to FocusImproving your focus can make you a better student or employee as well as a happier and more organized person. This is almost the same as the age-old question: The chicken or the egg, which came first?Usually, juicers remove the juice and some pulp (果肉) from fruits and/or vegetables. It takes a lot of fruit to make acontainer of juice. We do get all of the vitamins, minerals, beneficial plantchemicals and carbohydrates in juice out of a whole fruit. But we do not getmuch of the fiber, the part that aids our digestive process, fills us up, andmay help protect us against heart diseases and certain cancers. However, you may be surprised to discover that some juices actually contain more necessary nutrients (营养). For e_ample, apples are not a good source of vitamin C, but manytypes of apple juice are fortified with vitamin C.Juicetypically has more calories than fresh fruit due to added sugar and less fiber. If calories are your primary concern, choose fresh fruit over juice and usewater to quench your thirst. You can also look for low-calorie cranberry juice, typically sweetened with sugar substitute. We do not feel as filled up from juice because it does not contain any fiber. For many people, drinking a caloric beverage (饮料), such as juice, is not as satisfying as eating the same amount ofcalories in food. For those of us who need to increase caloric intake (such asathletes, children, or teens) juice is a GREAT choice.Kidslove the taste of pure fruit juice, and parents love it because it is a healthysource of nutrients. But avoid junk fruit beverages which are mistaken for juice blends that contain various fruits like grape, apple and pear. These juices do not have the natural levels of vital nutrients that 100 percentpure juices like orange juice provide.56. According to the passage, you’d better have _______ to help prevent heart disease.A.fruit B.juice C.calories D.minerals57.What can we learn from this passage?A. We can getout of fruit all the nutrients which aid our digestive process.B. We can hardly determine which provides more nutrients, juice orfruit.C.People may prefer juice to food in taking in the same amount of calories.D. If you wantmore calories, fruit might be your better choice.58. Theunderlined word 〝blends〞 in Paragraph5 probably means 〝______〞.A.containers B.products C.substitutes D.mi_tures59. The authorwrites the passage mainly _______.A.to remind people of negative effects of juiceB.to call on people to drink more juiceC.to help people learn more about fruit and juiceD.to persuade people to avoid junk juice containing various fruitsBThe earliest type ofmedicine in most cultures was the use of plants (herbalism) and animal parts. There is no actual record of when the use of plants for medical purposes firststarted, although the first generally accepted use of plants as healing medicine was described in the cave paintings discovered in France, which havebeen dated back to between 25000-13000 BC.Thepractice of medicine developed gradually, and separately, in ancient China, Egypt, India, Greece, Persia and elsewhere. Medicine as it is practiced nowdeveloped largely in the late 18th century and early 19th century in England,Germany and France, thanks to advances in chemistry as well as laboratory techniques and equipment. The new ‘scientific’ medicine (whose resultsare testable and repeatable) replacedmedicine in earlier times, which was based on herbalism. The modern era really began withRobert Koch’s discoveries around 1880 of the transmission of disease by bacteria, and then the discovery of antibiotics (抗生素) thereafter. The 20th century witnessed major advancesin the treatment of infectious(传染性的) diseases in western societies. The medical world is now developingmedicine that targets (面向)one particular disease process. Thus medicine is being developed toreduce the side effects to the greatest degree and to treat cancer and long-term problems such as high cholesterol(胆固醇).Today’smedicine has evolved(逐步上升) over thousands of years as each generation used and e_panded theknowledge of earlier times. This will continue to happen, and it is impossibleto say how medicine will develop over the ne_t hundred years. Our understandingof human genome(基因组)will leadto fresh treatments and new discoveries may open the door to unimaginable advances in medicine.60.Which of the following statementsabout the use of plants for medical purposes is true?A. Itsorigin is now well known to the public.B. Someearly cave paintings in Egypt showed when people began to use plants as medicine.C. It isnow generally accepted that people began to use plants as medicine at least 15000 years ago.D. In mostcultures, the use of plants came after the use of animals as medicine.61. The author mentionsancient China, Egypt, India and other countries to show that_______.A. thesecountries have a long historyB. onlythese countries began to develop medicine in the beginningC. thepractice of medicine developed separately in different countriesD. thepractice of medicine developed in the same way in different countries62. The new ‘scientific’medicine __________.A. hastestable and repeatable results B. is basedon herbalismC. isdeveloped in EnglandD. is capable of curing every disease63.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that_____________.A. the medicine in the future willin no sense be associated with that in earlier timesB. no one knows for sure whatmedicine in the future will beC. there will belittle room for the development of medicine in the future, since it is alreadyas developed nowD. herbalism willplay a great role in the development of medicine in the futureCThe following istaken from a VOA Special English Education Report on VOA, the voice of America.Read carefully and answer the questions that follow this passage:1.Todaywe answer a question from Martin in Me_ico City. It started with importing an outer shell overseas, before picking brains of a friend who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of how to build the car. With the help of his friend, Mr. Blackburn built the Batmobile in 18 months with the cost reaching six figures.Mr. Blackburn hoped to add a flamethrower (喷火器)onto the back of the vehicleand said he had thought about building the more recent Batman Tumbler from the series film Dark Knight.Though Mr. Blackburn encountered plenty of difficulties to get over during the construction, in September 2019, the car made its first show at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba, before being used by Blackburn's son for his hope.“ It was great. It was so good to see the kids' and adults' excitement at seeing the Batmobile. " Mr. Blackburn said. It will appear in the next film about Batman.CA trip to the theater, museum or art gallery could help you live longer. And the more often, the better, a new study suggests. Researchers from University College London (UCL)found that people engaged in the arts more frequently had a 31% lower risk of dying early when compared to those who didn't. Even going to the theater or museum once or twice a year was linked with a 14% lower risk.“While other health behaviors like smoking, alcohol and exercise are undoubtedly bigger predictors of the rate of death, these leisure and pleasure activities people don't think as a health related activity do support good health and long life," said Fancourt, an associate professor at UCL's Research Department of Behavioral Science and Health. How often an individual engaged in art activities, also including exhibitions, concerts and opera but not cinema, was measured at the start of the study in 2004 to 2005. The study looked at a range of economic, health and social factors to try and explain why there is a link between “arts engagement" and living longer, although as an observational study it can't establish cause. Part of the reason, the study said, comes down to social and economic differences among those who go and don't go to museums, exhibitions and art galleries. Wealth, they found, explained about 9% of the association. Cognitive (认知的)differences, social engagement and mental health also played a role.“Things like free time and occupational status made no material difference," said Fancourt, “ but engagement in arts can reduce stress and build creativity that allows people to adapt to changing circumstances. This study did not look at the effects of taking part in art-related activities but a World Health Organization review of available evidence published last year found that both receptive participation, like visiting a museum, and activeparticipation, like singing in a choir, had health benefits.8. How is the text mainly developedA. By giving examples.B. By making a comparison.C. By listing data.D. By presenting facts.9. What does the new study suggestA. Engagement in art activities could help people live longer.B. Arts engagement plays a big part in people's good health.C. Smoking, alcohol and exercise are good to people's health.D. Smoking, alcohol and exercise could lower the risk of death.10. Which of the following is not much of an art activityA. Going to the theatre.B. Attending a concert.C. Visiting the museum.D. Watching a movie.11. What can we infer from the textA. Arts engagement depends on whether we have free time.B. Social and economic differences affect our arts engagement greatly.C. Participating in art activities can bring us many health benefits.D. This new study is scientifically confirmed.DPeople feel good about recycling, maybe even more so when it comes to electronics. While electronics recycling isn't bad, making it a panacea (万能药)for the e-waste problem we currently have certainly is. Unfortunately, that's how we think of recycling —and companies to jump on that trend to appear more “green".A case in point: Apple. In 2016, there was lots of report on Liam, a robot able to dismantle (拆卸)an iPhone in just 11 seconds — a good way to recycle 1. 2 million units a year. That sounds amazing until you take into account thefact that Apple had actually sold 231 million new iPhones the year before. Liam, actually, is the perfect symbol for recycling in the field of high-tech:a drop of green water in an ocean of pollution.According to a recent UN report, the US produces about 6. 3 million tons or 14% of the world's electronic waste. Worldwide, almost 45 million tons of electronic waste were produced in 2016. Among them, only 20% had been recycled in some shape or form. The remaining 80% made its way to a more environmentally damaging end at the landfill (垃圾填埋场).Of course, we can say it's time to double our recycling efforts. However, the huge amount of e-waste is impossible to cope with. The UN report points out that while there is an increased focus on recycling today compared to the past, the effort to reuse used devices simply can't keep pace with the high consumption rates for new devices. In their environmental responsibility report, Apple admits that 77% of the carbon footprint of their electronics comes from their manufacture, versus (相对于)17% comes from its actual use. The environmental effect of replacing a device, even if it is recycled after, remains significant.12. Which of the following can best describe LiamA. It's useful but can't make a big difference.B. It's energy-saving but too expensive.C. It's well-made but won't become popular.D. It's advanced but impractical.13. What caused the e-waste recycling problemA. Few high-tech companies.B. Not enough recycling efforts.C. High demand for new electronics.D. Difficult recycling processes.14. What does the author think of the electronics recyclingA. It is very effective.B. It is quite good.C. It is environmentally damaging.D. It is far from “green" recycling.15. What can be the best title for the textA. A Recent UN Report on E-Waste ProblemB. The Limitation of Electronics RecyclingC. A Good Way to Cope With E-WasteD. The Responsibility for Apple to Decrease E-Waste第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
