In other words, Earth’s atmosphere couldn’thave supported a diversity of creatures, no matter what genetic advancementswere poised to occur.‚There is no questionthat genetic and ecological innovation must ultimately be behind the rise ofanimals, but it is equally unavoidable that animals need a certain level ofoxygen,‛ said Planavsky, co-lead author of the research along with ChristopherReinhard of the Georgia Institute of Technology. ‚We’re providing the firstevidence that oxygen levels were low enough during this period to potentiallyprevent the rise of animals.‛Thescientists found their evidence by analyzing chromium (Cr) isotopes in ancientsediments from China, Australia, Canada, and the United States. Chromium isfound in the Earth’s continental crust, and chromium oxidation is directlylinked to the presence of free oxygen in the atmosphere.Specifically, the team studied samples deposited in shallow,iron-rich ocean areas, near theshore. They compared their data with other samples taken from younger localesknown to have higher levels of oxygen.Oxygen’srole in controlling the first appearance of animals has long vexed scientists.‚We were missing the right approach until now,‛Planavsky said. ‚Chromium gaveus the proxy.‛ Previous estimates put the oxygen level at 40% of today’sconditions during pre-animal times, leaving open the possibility that oxygenwas already plentiful enough to support animal life.Inthe new study, the researchers acknowledged that oxygen levels were ‚highlydynamic‛in the early atmosphere, with the potential for occasional spikes. However, they said, ‚It seems clear that there is a first-order difference inthe nature of Earth surface Cr cycling‛ before and after the rise of animals.‚If we are right, ourresults will really change how people view the origins of animals and othercomplex life, and their relationships to the co-evolving environment,‛ saidco-author Tim Lyons of the University of California-Riverside. ‚This could be agame changer.‛Fundingsources for the research included the NASA Exobiology Program and the NationalScience Foundation’s Earth-Life Transitions program, awarded to Planavsky,Reinhard, and Lyons.Theother members of the research team included Xiangli Wang, a postdoctoral fellowat Yale; Thomas Johnson, of the University of Illinois;Danielle Thomson, ofCarleton University; Peter McGoldrick, of the University of Tasmania; andWoodward Fischer, of the California Institute of Technology.16.The study discovered the rise of animals occurred earlier than the Proterozoicperiod.A.RightB. The system uses pixel (像素)data in images and potentia y video — rather than just text — to locatedocuments. It learns to recognize the pixels associated with a search phrase bystudying the results from text-based image search engines. The knowledgegleaned (收集) from those results can then beapplied to other photos without tags or captions making for more accuratedocument search results.3."Over the last 30 years," says Associate Professor Lorenzo Torresani,a co-author of the study, "the Web has evolved from a small collection ofmostly text documents to a modern, massive, fast-growing multimedia dataset, where nearly every page includes multiple pictures or videos. When a personlooks at a Web page, he immediately gets the gist (主旨)of it by looking at the pictures in it. Yet, surprisingly, allexisting popularsearch engines, such as Google or Bing, strip away the information contained inthe photos and use exclusively the text of Web pages to perform the documentretrieval. Our study is the first to show that modern machine vision systemsare accurate and efficient enough to make effective use of the informationcontained in image pixels to improve document search."4.The researchers designed and tested a machine vision system — a type ofartificial intelligence that allows computers to learn without being explicitlyprogrammed —that extracts semantic (语义的) information from thepixels of photos in Web pages. This information is used to enrich thedescription of the HTML page used by search engines for document retrieval. Theresearchers tested their approach using more than 600 search queries (查询)on a database of 50 million Web pages. They selected the text-retheval searchengine with the best performance and modified it to make use of the additionalsemantic information extracted by their method from the pictures of the Webpages. They found that this produced a 30 percent improvement in precision overthe original search engine purely based on text.23. Paragraph 1 __B__24. Paragraph 2 __C__25. Paragraph 3 __E__26. That’s because they operate at low temperatures to cool crystalline silicon solar cells, which lets the silicon generate more electricity but isn’ta very efficient way to gather heat. That’s a problem of economics. Good solar hot-water systems can harvest much more energy than a solar-electric system at a substantially lower cost. And it’s also a space problem: photovoltaic cells can take up all the space on the roof, leaving little room for thermal applications. In a pair of studies, Joshua Pearce, anassociate professor of materials science and engineering, has devised a solution in the form of a better PVT made with a different kind of silicon. His research collaborators are Kunal Girotra from Thin Silicon in California and Michael Pathak and Stephen Harrison from Queen’s University, Canada. Most solar panels are made with crystalline silicon, but you can also make solar cells out of amorphous silicon, commonly known as thin-film silicon. They don’t create as much electricity, but they are lighter, flexible, and cheaper. And, because they require much less silicon, they have a greener footprint. Unfortunately, thin-film silicon solar cellsare vulnerable to some bad-news physics in the form of the Staebler-Wronski effect.‚That means that their efficiency drops when you expose them to light — pretty much the worst possible effect for a solar cell,‛ Pearce explains, which is one of the reasons thin-film solar panels make up only a small fraction of the market. However, Pearce and his team found a way to engineer around the Staebler-Wronski effect by incorporating thin-film siliconin a new type of PVT. You don’t have to cool down thin-film silicon to make it work. In fact, Pearce’s group discovered that by heating it to solar-thermal operating temperatures, near the boiling point of water, they could make thicker cells that largely overcame the Staebler-Wronski effect. When they applied the thin-film silicon directly to a solar thermal energy collector, they also found that by baking the cell once a day, they boosted the solar cell’s electrical efficiency by over 10 percent.31. PVTs are not efficient inA. creating electricity.B. cooling silicon solar cells.C. generating heat.D. powering solar thermal collectors.32. One of the problems PVTs have is thatA. their thermala pplications are costly.B. they are too expensive to afford.C. it is hard to fix them on the roof.D. they occupy too much space.33. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an advantage of thin-film silicon solar cells?A. They are flexible.B. They are less expensive.C. They are electrically efficient.D. They are environment friendly.34. Thin-film solar panels do not sell well on market becauseA. they do not work well if exposed to light.B. their advantages are not well-recognized.C. they need improving in appearance.D. they are not advertised.35 Which of the following statements is true?A. New techniques have been developed to produce thin-film silicon.B Thin-film silicon works efficiently at low temperature.C Thin-film silicon's electrical efficiency improves when heated up.D Anew material enlarging the Staebler-WronsKi effect has been created.译文:第十三篇更有效的太阳能系统:更多热量,更强灯光太阳能光伏热能系统,也叫PVT,能够生成热量和电能。

If their noses inhaled(吸入)a certain type of air pollution when they were pregnant. That's the finding of a new study. Released when things aren't burned completely, this pollution is known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs. The biggest sources of these PAHs: the burning of fossil fuels, wood and trash.Frederica Perera works at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health is New York City. She researches how exposure to things in the environment affects children's health in a new study, she and her team studied the exposure to air pollution of 233 nonsmoking pregnant women in New York City. Because burning tobacco can spew(排放)PAHs into the air and lungs, Perera's team focused on nonsmokers. The researchers wanted to probe(探查)other sources of PAHs, ones that's would have been hard for an individual to avoid. The team started by testing the blood of each woman during pregnancy. The reason Any PAHs in a woman's blood would also be available to the baby in her womb. Nine years later, the researchers investigated signs of attention problems in those children, now age 9. They asked each child's mother a series of questions. These includedwhatever her child had problems doing things that needed sustained(长期的)mental effort, such as homework or games with friends. The scientists also asked if the kids had trouble following instructions or made frequent, careless mistakes. All of these can be symptoms of a disorder called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. About one in U.S. children has ADHD.Among the women studied, traffic and home heating were the primary sources of air pollution exposure, Perera and her team suspect. Some of these women had low levels of PAHs in their blood. Ohters had high levels. Those with high levels were five times as likely to have children who showed attention problems by age 9. The new findings were published November 5 in the journal PLOS ONE.16.【题干】Perera and her team chose nonsmoking pregnant women all over America.【选项】A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【答案】B17.【题干】The main purpose of the research was to find out how exposure to PAHs played a role in harming the subjects' physical health.【选项】A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【答案】B18.【题干】Nonsmoking mothers were selected because the effect of smoking on PAHs was unclear.【选项】BA.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【答案】B19.【题干】The blood of each woman was tested once a month during pregnancy.【选项】A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【答案】C20.【题干】Kids with ADHD commonly fail in school.【选项】A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【答案】C21.【题干】The women with high levels of PAHs in their blood were more likely to have kids with ADHD.【选项】A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【答案】A22.【题干】Traffic and home heating were considered to be the biggest sources of PAHs for the subjects in the research.【选项】

2 Many people have aroatherapy massages(按摩),and depending on the treatment aperson is having, the aroatherapist will massage the oil into the hands or shoulders. The massage is smooth and flowing,as it is designed to create a sense of relaxation and calm. The sessions are tailored to the individual's health and mood at rhe time,so every session is unique.3 Practioners of aromatherapy believe that the aroma of the essential oils directy stimulates the brain or that the oils are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, where they can affect the whole body and promote healing.Other claims in support of aromatherapy are that it aids digestion, imtproves the functiong of respiratory system, reduces muscular aches and pains, and promotes muscle relaxation and tone.It has also been argued that aromatherapy can improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and help combat insomia(失眠)and other stress-related disorders such as tension headaches, anxiety, and mild depression.4 However, while aroatherapy may hace real effects that promate a sense of well-being,some tradional medicine practitioners remain doubtful about its powers. While research has confirmed that aroatherapy does have some positive short-term effects on most people,it also suggests that aroatherapy is not an actual science or medicine that should be used to treat illness.Furthermore, not all aroatherapy is considered beneficial to health. There are precautions which shoula be taken bofore having aroatherapy because some oils can have negative effets on people with certain medical conditions. The study of aroatherapy is relatively new and unexplored.More research needs to be conducted to make scientific conclusions about its use and effects.练习:23. The report ,which followed 73,000 women for 17 years, found walking for at least seven hours a week lowered the risk of the disease. The American Cancer Society team said this was the first time reduced risk was specifically linked to walking. UK experts said it was more evidence that lifestyle influenced cancer risk.A recent poll for the charity Ramblers a quarter of adults walk for no more than an hour a week, but being active is known to reduce the risk of a number of cancers. This study, published in Cancer Epidemiology,Biomarkers&Prevention, followed 73.615 women out of 97,785 aged 50-74 who had been recruited by the American Cancer Society between 1992 and 1993,so it could monitor the incidence of cancer in the group. They were asked to complete questionnaires on their health and on how much time they were active and participating in activities such as walking, swimming and aerobics(有氧运动)and how much timethey spent sitting watching television or reading. They completed the same questionnaires at two-year intervals between 1997 and 2009.Of the women,47% said walking was their only recreational acivity. Those who walked for at least seven hours per week had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer compared to those who walked three or fewer hours per week.Dr.Alpa Patel,a senior epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta,Georgia, who led the study, said:”Given that more than 60% of w omen report some daily walking, promoting walking as a healthy leisure-time activity could be an effective strategy for increasing physical activity amongst post-menopausal women. We were pleased to find that without any other recreational activity, just walking one hour a day was associated with a lower risk of breast cancer in these women.””More strenuous(紧张的)and longer activities lowered the risk even more.Baroness Delyth Morgan, chief executive of Breast Cancer Campaign, said:”This study adds further evidence that our lifestyle choices can play a part in influencing the risk of breast cancer and even small changes incorporate into our normal day-to-day activity can make a difference.”She added:”We know that the best weapon to overcoming breast cancer is t he ability to stop it occurring in the first place. The challenge now is how we turn these findings into action and identify other sustainable lifestyle changes that will help us prevent breast cancer.”31. All of the following factors relating to cancer risk were mentioned in the passage______EXCEPT_______A. breathing exerciseB.regular walkingC.recreational activityD.lifestyle choices32. It can be inferred from Dr. Alpa Patel’s study that____.A. women have fewer chances of physical activityB. daily walking could cut the chance of breast cancerC. leisure-time activity is not associated with cancer riskD. walking is not recommended for women with breast cancer33. Persistent答案:ABACAFirst Self-contained Heart Implanted 【首例整套人工心脏移植】A patient on the brink of death has received the world’s first self-contained artificial heart—a battery-powered device about the size of a softball that runs without the need for wires, tubes or hoses sticking out of the chest. Two surgeons from the University of Louisville implanted the titanium and plastic pump during a sever-hour operation at Jewish Hospital Monday. The hospital s aid the patient was “awake and responsive” Tuesday and resting comfortably. It refused to release personal details. The patient had been expected to die within a month without the operation, and doctors said they expected the artificial heart to extend the person’s life by only a month. But the device is considered a major step toward improving the patient’s quality of life. The new pump, called AbioCor, is also a technological leap from the mechanical hearts used in the 1980s, which were attached by wires and tubes to bulky machinery outside the body. The most famous of those, the Jarvic-7, used air as a pumping device and was attached to an apparatus about the size of a washing machine.“I think it’s potentially a major step forward in the artificial heart development,” said Dr. David Faxon, president of the American heart Association. However, he said the dream of an implantable, permanent artificial heart is not yet a reality: “This is obviously an experimental device whose long-term success has to be dem onstrated.” Only about half of the 4,200 Americans on a waiting list for donor hearts received them last year, and most of the rest died. Some doctors, including Robert Higgins, chairman of cardiology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, said artificial hearts are unlikely to replace donor hears.“A donor heart in a good transplant can last 15 to 30 years,” he said. “It’s going to be hard to replace that with a machine.”The AbilCor has a 2-pound pumping unit, and electronic controls that adjust the pumping speed based on the body’s needs. It is powered by a small battery pack worn outside the body that transmits current through the skin.36. 前两段告诉Self-contained artificial heartA. was made of titanium and pumpB. had brought the patient to the brink of deathC. did not need to get power from outside the bodyD. was invented by two surgeous from university of Louisville37. 病人接收 the first self-contained heartA. could not afford a donor heartB. was said to be in a good condition the next day after the operationC. died two month’s after the heart implantationD. was reluctant to release his or her personal information38. 第四段中the Jarvic-7 isA. the most expensive mechanical heartB. a mechanical heart used in the 1980sC. as advanced as A biocorD. replacing A biocor39. 通过Dr. David Faxon, the self-contained heart isA. a milestone in the artificial heart developmentB. still in the experimental stageC. an implantable, permanent artificial heartD. unavailable to all those Americans waiting for donor hearts40.从文章推断出donor heartA. saved the lives of about 2100 Americans the year before the reportB. will be replaced by self-contained artificial hearts sooner or laterC. are more popular and cheaper than self-contained artificial heartsD. can help patients survive less than 15 years if they are in good transplant.答案:ABBBA五、补全短文Wrongly Convicted Man and His Accuser Tell Their StoryNEW YORK,NY, January 5,2010. St.Martin’s Press has announced the release of the paperback edition of Picking Cotton, a remarkable true story of what novelist John Grisham calls an “account of violence, rage, redemption(救赎),and, ultimately forgiveness.”The story began in 1987, in Burlington, North Carolina, with the rape of a young while college student named Jennifer Thompson. During her ordeal, Thompson swore to herself that she would never forget the face of her rapist, a man who climbed through the window of her apartment and assaulted her brutally._During the attack, she made an effort to memorize eveery detail of his face, looking for scars, tattoos(纹身),or other identifying marks.(46)When the police asked her if she could identify the assilant(袭击者)from a book of mug shots, she picked one that she was sure was correct, and later she identified the same man in a lineup.Based on her convincing eyewithness testimony, a 22-year-old black man named Ronald Cotton was sentenced to prison for two life terms. Cotton’s lawyer appealed the decision, and by the time of the appeals hearing, evidence had come to light suggesting that the real rapist might have been a man who looked very like Cotton, an imprisoned criminal named Bobby Poole.Another trial was held.(47)Jennifer Thompson looked at both men face to face, and once again said that Ronald Cotton was the one who raped her.Eleven years later, DNA evidence completely exonerated(证明……清白)Cotton and just as unequivocally(明确地) convicted Poole, who confessed to the crime. Thompson was shocked anddevastated.(48) “The man I was so sure I had never seen in my life was the man who was inches from my throat, who raped me, who hurt me, who took my spirit away, who robbed me of my soul,” she wrote. “And the man I had identified so surely on so many occasions was absolutely innocent.”_Jennifer Thompson decided to meet Cotton and apologize to him personally.(49) Remarkably both were able to put this tragedy behind them, overcome the racial barrier that divided them, and write a book, which they have subtitled “Our memoir of injustice and redemption.”Nevertheless, Thompson says, she still lives “with constant pain that my pro found mistake cost him so dearly_I cannot begin to imagine what would have happened had my mistaken identification occurred in a capital case_(50)”A. Jennifer Thompson decided to meet Cotton and apologize to him personally.B. Many criminals are sent to prison on the basis of accurate testimony by eyewithnesses.C. I cannot begin to imagine what would have happened had my mistaken identification occurred in a capital caseD. Another trial was held.E. Thompson was shocked and devastated.F. During the attack, she made an effort to memorize eveery detail of his face, looking for scars, tattoos(纹身),or other identifying marks.答案:FDEAC六、完型填空More about Alzheimer's DiseaseScientists have developed skin tests that may be used in the future to identify people with Alzheimer's disease1 and may ultimately allow physicians to predict who is at risk of getting this neurological disorder.' The only current means of diagnosing the disease in a living patient is a long and expensive series of tests that eliminate every other cause of dementia.“ Since Alois Alzheimer described the disease nearly a century ago, people have been trying to find a way to accurately diagnose it in its early stages,” said Patricia Grady, acting director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, Maryland. "Thisdiscovery, if confirmed, could prove a big step forward in our efforts to deal with and understand the disease. ”Alzheimer's is the single greatest cause of mental deterioration in older people, affecting between 2. 5 million and 4 million people in the United States alone. The devastating disorder gradually destroys memory and the ability to function, and eventually causes death. There is currently no known treatment for the disease.Researches discovered that the skin cells of Alzheimer' s patients have defects that interfere with their ability to regulate the flow of potassium in and out of the cells. The fact that the cell defects are present in the skin suggests that Alzheimer's resultsfrom physiological changes throughout the body, and that dementia may be the first noticeable effect of these changes as the defects affect the cells in the brain, scientists said. The flow of potassium is especially critical in cells responsible for memory formation. The scientists also found two other defects that affect the cells' supply of calcium, another critical element. One test developed by researches calls for growing skin cells in a laboratory culture and then testing them with an electrical detector to determine if the microscopic tunnels that govern the flow of potassium are open. Open potassium channels create a unique electrical signature.A spokesman for the Alzheimer's Association said that if the validity of the diagnostic test can be proven it would be an important development, but cautioned that other promising tests for Alzheimer's have been disappointing.。
