2024年江苏省一般高等学校“专转本”统一考试高校英语第I卷(共100分)Part I Reading Comprehension (共40分)Passage oneUnder proper conditions, sound waves will be reflected from a hillside or other such obstruction. Sound travels at the rate of about one-fifth of mile per second. If the hill is eleven hundred feet away, it takes two seconds for the sound to travel o the hill and back. Thus, by timing the interval between a sound and its reflection (the echo), you can estimate the distance to an obstruction.During word war 2 the British used a practical application of this principle to detect German planes on their way to bomb London long before the enemy was near the target. They used radio waves instead of sound waves, since radio waves can penetrate fog and clouds. The outnumbered Royal Air Force (RAF) always seemed to the puzzled Germans to be lying in wait at the right time and never to be surprised. It was radio echoes more than anything else that won the Battle of Britain.Since the radio waves were used to tell the direction in which to send the RAF planes and the distance to send them (their range of flight, in other words), the device was called radio directing and ranging, and from the initials the word radar was coined. (files come from )1. Sound waves reflected from a hill can be used to estimate the.A. heigt of the hillB. speed of soundC. distance to the hillD. intensite of sound2. The Romans were the best of the ancient engineers and architects. They were brilliant students of Greek geometry and trigonometry (三角学) , and they applied their knowledge to the construction of fine bridges, roads, aqueducts (渠道) , and public buildings. They knew about the smelting of iron ore, but they used the iron they produced mainly for spears, swords, and shields, rather than for building construction. While the Romans accomplished practical wonders, they did very little theoretical scientific thinking. Because of their frequent wars, many of their inventions were no more than improvements in the design of Greek weapons with which they were familiar. There are two reasons for the Romans neglect of philosophy and pure mathematics. First, they were apparently too busy conquering nearby nations and forming them into a rapidly growing empire to waste time on abstract thinking. Secondly, they were handicapped (阻碍) by the rigidity of their numerical system. (Try to multiply XI by LVII orto divide CXLIII by IX; it simply cannot be done with pencil and paper.) The Romans did all of their arithmetic on an abacus, the ancient counterpart of the modern computing machine. Their number system discouraged the study of pure mathematics.6. The author calls the Romans “practical” because theyA. Cared little about philosophyB. Applied their knowledge to constructionC. Saw the necessity for developing theoretical scienceD. Studied the past and learned from it7.The ancient Romans did not concern themselves withA. Theoretical or abstract thoughtB. applied mathematicsC. Then we were each separately sent on what was grandly referred to as a cruise in my father’s 18-foot knockabout, spending the night on board, and loaded down, according to formally plot our course, using the tide table, even though our goal was an island I could see quite clearly across the water in the distance.16. The first of these was a colonial institution. It began in New England with the establishment in 1635 of the Boston Free Latin School. The curriculum consisted mainly of the classical languages, and the purpose of this kind of school was the preparation of boys for college, where most of them would be fitted for the ministry. The academy began in the early 1750’s with Benjamin Franklin’s school in Philadelphia, which later became the University of Pennsylvania. It extended generally to about the middle of the nineteenth century, except in the southern states where the public high school was late in developing and where the academy continued a principal means of secondary education even after 2900. the academy was open to girls as well as to boys, and it provided a wider curriculum than the Latin grammar school had furnished. It was designed not only as a wider curriculum than the Latin grammar school had furnished. It was designed not only as a preparation for college but also for practical life in commercial and business activities. Although its wide educational values were evident and are recognized as important contributions to secondary education in this country, the academy was never considered a public institution as the public high school has come to be.The public high school had its origin in Massachusetts in 1821 when the EnglandClassicalSchool was established in Boston. In 1827, that state enacted the first state-wide public high-school law in the United States. By 1840, there were perhaps a dozen public high schools in Massachusetts and many in other eastern states; by 1850, they were also to be found in many other states.Just as the curriculum of the academy grew out of that of the Latin grammar school, so the curriculum of the public high school developed out of the academy. The public high school in the United States is a rejection of the aristocratic (贵族) and selective principle of the European educational tradition. Since 1890, enrollments in secondary schools, mainly public high schools, have practically doubled in this country every ten years.16. But how much sleep do we actually need? For most of us, eight hours seems to be about the right amount. Yet we know that there are many people who get 61 perfectly with less sleep, and some who may need 62 . A great deal depends on the 63 we live. But a good general rule 64 is to sleep as long as we have to in order to feel happy and be able to work 65 our best when we awaken. There are actually different 66 of sleep. There is a deep sleep and shallow sleep. In a shallow sleep our body does not get the same kind of rest it gets in a 67 sleep, 68 after eight hours of a shallow sleep we may still feel tired. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Bill Gates, the billionaire Microsoft chairman without a single earned university degree, is by his success raising new doubts about the worth of the business world’s favorite academic title:the MBA (Master of Business Administration). The MBA, a 20th-century product, always has borne the mark of lowly commerce and greed (贪婪) on the tree-lined campuses ruled by purer disciplines such as philosophy and literature. But even with the recession apparently cutting into the hiring of business school graduates, about 79,000 people are expected to receive MBAs in 1993. This is nearly 16 times the number of business graduates in 1960, a testimony to the wide spread assumption that the MBA is vital for young men and women who want to run companies some day.“If you are going into the corporate world it is still a disadvantage not to have one,”said Donald Morrison, professor of marketing and management science. “But in the last five years or so, when someone says, ‘Should I attempt to get an MBA,’the answer a lot more is: It depends.”The success of Bill Gates and other non-MBAs, such as the late Sam Walton of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., has helped inspire self-conscious debates on business school campuses over the worth of a business degree and whether management skills can be taught. The Harvard Business Review printed a lively, fictional exchange of letters to dramatize complaints about business degree holders. The article called MBA hires “extremely disappointing”and said “MBAs want to move up too fast, they don’t understand politics and people, and they aren’t able to function as part of a team until their third year. But by then, they’re out looking for other jobs.”The problem, most participants in the debate acknowledge, is that the MBA has acquired an aura (光环) of future riches and power far beyond its actual importance and usefulness. Enrollment in business schools exploded in the 1970s and 1980s and created the assumption that no one who pursued a business career could do without one. The growth was fueled by a backlash (反冲) against the anti-business values of the 1960s and by the women’s movement. Business people who have hired or worked with MBAs say those with the degrees of ten know how to analyze systems but are not so skillful at motivating people. “They don’t get a lot of grounding in the people side of the business”, said James Shaffer, vice-president and principal of the Towers Perrin management consulting firm.36.According to Paragraph 2, what is the general attitude towards business on campuses dominated by purer disciplines?A) Scornful.B) Appreciative.C) Envious.D) Realistic.37.It seems that the controversy over the value of MBA degrees had been fueled mainly by ________.A) the complaints from various employersB) the success of many non-MBAsC) the criticism from the scientists of purer disciplinesD) the poor performance of MBAs at work38.What is the major weakness of MBA holders according to the Harvard Business Review?A) They are usually self-centered.B) They are aggressive and greedy.C) They keep complaining about their jobs.D) They are not good at dealing with people.39.From the passage we know that most MBAs ________.A) can climb the corporate ladder fairly quicklyB) quit their jobs once they are familiar with their workmatesC) receive salaries that do not match their professional trainingD) cherish unrealistic expectations about their future40.What is the passage mainly about?A) Why there is an increased enrollment in MBA programs.B) The necessity of reforming MBA programs in business schools.C) Doubts about the worth of holding an MBA degree.D) A debate held recently on university campuses.Passage TwoQuestions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage. Some futurologists have assumed that the vast upsurge (剧增) of women in the workforce may portend a rejection of marriage. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. The converse (反面) of this concern is that the prospects of becoming a multi-paycheck household could encourage marriages. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man counted in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to postpone marriage because the parties cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy rebounds, the number of marriages also rises.Coincident with the increase in women working outside the home is the increase in divorce rates. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact of a wife’s work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible. Tensions grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. Given high unemployment, inflationary problems, and slow growth in real earnings, a working wife can increase household income and relieve some of these pressing financial burdens. By raising a family’s standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her family’s financial and emotional stability. Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife blocked from a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union. Also, a major part of women’s inequality in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. With higher earning capacity and status occupations outside of the home comes the capacity to exercise power within the family. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.41.The word “portend”(Line 2, Para. 1) is closest in meaning to “________”.A) defyB) signalC) suffer fromD) result from42.It is said in the passage that when the economy slides, ________.A) men would choose working women as their marriage partnersB) more women would get married to seek financial securityC) even working women would worry about their marriagesD) more people would prefer to remain single for the time being43.If women find fulfillment through work outside the home, ________.A) they are more likely to dominate their marriage partnersB) their husbands are expected to do more houseworkC) their marriage ties can be strengthenedD) they tend to put their career before marriage44.One reason why women with no career may seek a divorce is that ________.A) they feel that they have been robbed of their freedomB) they are afraid of being bossed around by their husbandsC) they feel that their partners fail to live up to their expectationsD) they tend to suspect their husbands’loyalty to their marriage45.Which of the following statements can best summarize the author’s view in the passage?A) The stability of marriage and the divorce rate may reflect the economic situation of the country.B) Even when economically independent, most women have to struggle for real equality in marriage.C) In order to secure their marriage women should work outside the home and remain independent.D) The impact of the growing female workforce on marriage varies from case to case.Passage ThreeQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.“I’ve never met a human worth cloning,”says cloning expert Mark Westhusin from his lab at Texas A&M University. “It’s a stupid endeavor.”That’s an interesting choice of adjective, coming from a man who has spent millions of dollars trying to clone a 13-year-old dog named Missy. So far, he and his team have not succeeded, though they have cloned two cows and expect to clone a cat soon. They just might succeed in cloning Missy this spring—or perhaps not for another 5 years. It seems the reproductive system of man’s best friend is one of the mysteries of modern science.Westhusin’s experience with cloning animals leaves him upset by all this talk of human cloning. In three years of work on the Missy project, using hundreds upon hundreds of dog’s eggs, the A&M team has produced only a dozen or so embryos (胚胎) carrying Missy’s DNA. None have survived the transfer to a surrogate (代孕的) mother. The wastage of eggs and the many spontaneously aborted fetuses (胎) may be acceptable when you’re dealing with cats orbulls, he argues, but not with humans. “Cloning is incredibly inefficient, and also dangerous,”he says.Even so, dog cloning is a commercial opportunity, with a nice research payoff. Ever since Dolly the sheep was cloned in 1997, Westhusin’s phone has been ringing with people calling in hopes of duplicating their cats and dogs, cattle and horses. “A lot of people want to clone pets, especially if the price is right,”says Westhusin. Cost is no obstacle for Missy’s mysterious billionaire owner; he’s put up $3.7 million so far to fund A&M’s research.Contrary to some media reports, Missy is not dead. The owner wants a twin to carry on Missy’s fine qualities after she does die. The prototype is, by all accounts, athletic, good-natured and supersmart. Missy’s master does not expect an exact copy of her. He knows her clone may not have her temperament. In a statement of purpose, Missy’s owner and the A&M team say they are “both looking forward to studying the ways that her clones differ from Missy.”Besides cloning a great dog, the project may contribute insight into the old question of nature vs, nurture. It could also lead to the cloning of special rescue dogs and many endangered animals. However, Westhusin is cautious about his work. He knows that even if he gets a dog pregnant, the offspring, should they survive, will face the problems shown at birth by other cloned animals: abnormalities like immature lungs and heart and weight problems~ “Why would you ever want to clone humans,Westhusin asks, “when we’re not even close to getting it worked out in animals yet?”46.By “stupid endeavor”(Line 2, Para. 1), Westhusin means to say that ________.A) human cloning is a foolish undertakingB) animal cloning is absolutely impracticalC) human cloning should be done selectivelyD) animal cloning is not worth the effort at all47.What does the first paragraph tell us about Westhusin’s dog cloning project?A) Its success is already in sight.B) It is doomed to utter failure.C) It is progressing smoothly.D) Its outcome remains uncertain.48.By cloning Missy, Mark Westhusin hopes to ________.A) examine the reproductive system of the dog speciesB) find out the differences between Missy and its clonesC) search for ways to modify.its temperamentD) study the possibility of cloning humans49.We learn from the passage that animal clones are likely to have ________.A) an abnormal shapeB) a bad temperC) defective organsD) immune deficiency50.It can be seen that present cloning techniques ________.A) provide insight into the question of nature vs, nurtureB) have been widely used in saving endangered speciesC) have proved quite adequate for the cloning of humansD) still have a long way to go before reaching maturityPassage FourQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.Frustrated with delays in Sacramento, Bay Area officials said Thursday they planned to take matters into their own hands to regulate the region’s growing pile of electronic trash.A San Jose councilwoman and a San Francisco supervisor said they would propose local initiatives aimed at controlling electronic waste if the California law-making body fails to act on two bills stalled in the Assembly. They are among a growing number of California cities and counties that have expressed the same intention.Environmentalists and local governments are increasingly concerned about the toxic hazard posed by old electronic devices and the cost of safely recycling those products. An estimated 6 million televisions and computers are stocked in California homes, and an additional 6,000 to 7,000 computers become outdated every day. The machines contain high levels of lead and other hazardous substances, and are already banned from California landfills (垃圾填埋场). Legislation by Senator Byron Sher would require consumers to pay a recycling fee of up to $30 on every new machine containing a cathode (阴极) ray tube. Used in almost all video monitors and televisions, those devices contain four to eight pounds of lead each. The fees would go toward setting up recycling programs, providing grants to non-profit agencies that reuse the tubes and rewarding manufacturers that encourage recycling.A separate bill by Los Angeles-area Senator Gloria Romero would require high-tech manufacturers to develop programs to recycle so-called e-waste.If passed, the measures would put California at the forefront of national efforts to manage the refuse of the electronic age.But high-tech groups, including the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group and the American Electronics Association, oppose the measures, arguing that fees of up to $30 will drive consumers to online, out-of-state retailers.“What really needs to occur is consumer education. Most consumers are unaware they’re not supposed to throw computers in the trash,”said Roxanne Gould, vice president of government relations for the electronics association.Computer recycling should be a local effort and part of residential waste collection programs, she added.Recycling electronic waste is a dangerous and specialized matter, and environmentalists maintain the state must support recycling efforts and ensure that the job isn’t contracted to unscrupulous (毫无顾忌的) junk dealers who send the toxic parts overseas.“The graveyard of the high-tech revolution is ending up in rural China,”said Ted Smith, director of the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. His group is pushing for an amendment to Sher’s bill that would prevent the export of e-waste.51.What step were Bay Area officials going to take regarding e-waste disposal?A) Rally support to pass the stalled bills.B) Lobby the lawmakers of the California Assembly.C) Lay down relevant local regulations themselves.D) Exert pressure on manufacturers of electronic devices.52.The two bills stalled in the California Assembly both concern ________.A) the reprocessing of the huge amounts of electronic waste in the stateB) regulations on dumping hazardous substances into landfillsC) the funding of local initiatives to reuse electronic trashD) the sale of used electronic devices to foreign countries53.Consumers are not supposed to throw used computers in the trash because ________.A) this is banned by the California governmentB) some parts may be recycled for use elsewhereC) unscrupulous dealers will retrieve them for profitD) they contain large amounts of harmful substances54.High-tech groups believe that if an extra $30 is charged on every TV or computer purchased in California, consumers will ________.A) hesitate to upgrade their computersB) abandon online shoppingC) buy them from other statesD) strongly protest against such a charge55.We learn from the passage that much of California’s electronic waste has been ________.A) dumped into local landfillsB) exported to foreign countriesC) collected by non-profit agenciesD) recycled by computer manufacturersPart III Cloze(10%)In 1915 Einstein made a trip to Gattingen to give some lectures at the invitation of the mathematical physicist David Hilbert. He was particularly eager—too eager, it would turn 62 --to explain all the intricacies of relativity to him. The visit was a triumph, and he said to a friend excitedly. “I was able to 63Hilbert of the general theory of relativity.”64all of Einstein’s personal turmoil (焦躁) at the time, a new scientific anxiety was about to 65 . He was struggling to find the right equations that would 66his new concept of gravity, 67that would define how objects move 68space and how space is curved by objects. By the end of the summer, he 69the mathematical approach he had been 70for almost three years was flawed. And now there was a 71pressure. Einstein discovered to his 72that Hilbert had taken what he had lectures and was racing to come up 73the correct equations first. It was an enormously complex task. Although Einstein was the better physicist. Hilbert was the better mathematician. So in October 1915 Einstein 74himself into a month-long-frantic endeavor in 75he returned to an earlier mathematical strategy and wrestled with equations, proofs, corrections and updates that he 76to give as lectures to Berlin’s Prussian Academy of Sciences on four 77Thursdays.His first lecture was delivered on Nov.4.1915, and it explained his new approach, 78 he admitted he did not yet have the precise mathematical formulation of it. Einstein also took time off from 79revising his equations to engage in an awkward fandango (方丹戈双人舞) with his competitor Hilbert. Worried 80being scooped (抢先), he sent Hilbert a copy of his Nov.4 lecture. “I am 81to know whether you will take kindly to this new solution,”Einstein notedwith a touch of defensiveness.56. 第I卷(共100分)Part I Reading Comprehension (共40分)Passage 1Sometimes, people simply do not realize they are being ill mannered. Take Ted, for example. He prides himself on speaking his mind, and has something to say on everything. But his frankness is often extremely embarrassing. He is incapable of sayi ng, “I thought that last advertising campaign had a lot of good ideas in it, but perhaps next time we could give the copy more vitality (活力) .”Instead, he could say, “That campaign was a disaster. A child of three could have done be tter!”The fact that he is often right does not help. Other employees dislike his manner even more, he is too sensitive to notice.Another character among the list of ill-mannered employees is Sally, who seems to regard just being at work as a severe punishment. Everything is done unwillingly. Asking her to do a task beyond her basic job description is often not worth the trouble. It will be done, but half-heartedly.Fergus is just the opposite. He shows an over-familiarity to his boss. When an important visitor is shown into the manager’s office, Fergus cannot take the hint and leave. In stead he w3illattempt to take part in the conversation, declaring, “You can talk in font of me. Henry and I don’t have many secrets, do we? ” Over the years Pergus has fallen behind his former equals. But he seeks to maintain the same close relationship that he imagines existed in their younger days.1. Which of the following words describes Ted best?A. ColdB. TactlessC. StupidD. Warm-hearted2. It can be inferred from the passage that Ted .A. is well-known for his honestlyB. tends to blame others rather than himselfC. often gives the right idea in the wrong wayD. is treated unfairly by the management3. Which of the following is true about Sally?A. She thinks it’s unfair to have so much work to do.B. She is unhappy to help others.C. She hates being ordered about.D. The writer is taking the point of view of .A. a colleagueB. people like TedC. an employeeD. a managerPassage 2A lot of real businesses are focusing on the Internet as a way of building sales, but some people with nothing to sell are creating their own Web sites to announce wedding plans, show off pictures of their kids or just have communication. It’s not as hard as you think and it can be a lot of fun. Carol Masser has so me tips on building you own Web site. “Like my living room, or my study, it’s where I put, mementos (纪念品), collectibles (收藏物), books and paintings and things that I would like to show to my friend s and relatives.”Renne Tubegeihan uses his own Web site to invite people into his virtual home. While John Marashod designed his own Web site to attract other parents of disabled children. “I’d say the goal of this site is to basically link parents inthe same situation with disabled children and exch ange ideas with one another.”Renne and John are part of a growing number of surfers who have established their own Web site. That’s great if your mood is a pleasant one, but a problem i f you are sad, anxious, angry or simple lonely. Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk them out: sometimes, though, there is no one to listen. Modern pharmacology (药物学) offers a lot of tranquilizers (镇静剂), antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. What many pe ople don’t realize, however, is that scientists have discovered the effectiveness of several non-drug approaches to make you free from an unwanted mood. These can be just as useful as drugs, and have the added benefit of being non-poisonous. So next time y ou feel out of sorts, don’t h ead for the drug-store, try the following approach.Of all the mood-altering self-help techniques, aerobic (增氧健体的) exercise seems to be the most efficient cure for a bad mood. “If you could keep the exercise, you’d be in high spirits.”Says Kathryn Lance, author of Running for Health and Beauty.Researchers have explained biochemical and various other changes that make exercise compared favorably todrugs as a mood-raiser. Physical exertion such as housework, however, does little. The key is aerobic exercise—running, cycling, walking, swimming or other repetitive and tamed activities thatboost the heart rate., increase circulation (血液循环) and improve the body’s utilization (利用) of oxygen. Do them for at least 20 minutes a session, three of five times a week.11. What id the main subject of the passage?A. How to beat a bad mood.B. How to do physical exercise.C. 江苏专转本英语真题及答案之欧阳与创编
江苏省 2012 年普通高校专转本统一英语考试第一卷(共 100 分)Part I Reading Comprehension(共 20 题,每题 2 分,共40 分)Passage OneQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. American researchers have developed a technique that may become an important tool in fighting AIDS. The technique stops the AIDS virus from attacking its target-cells in the body's defense system. When AIDS virus enters the blood, it searches for blood cells called T4 lymphocytes (淋巴细胞). The virus connects to the outside of T4 lymphocytes, then forces its way inside. There it directs the cells' genetic (基因的)material to produce copies of the AIDS virus. This is how AIDS spreads.Researchers think they may be able to stop AIDS from spreading by preventing virus from connecting to T4cells. When AIDS virus finds a T4 cell, it actually connects to a part of the cell called CD4 protein.Researchers want to fool the virus by putting copies or clones of the CD4 protein into the blood. This way the AIDS virus will connect to the cloned protein instead of the real ones. Scientists use the genetic engineering methods to make the clones. Normally a CD4 protein remains on the T4 cell at all times. The AIDS virus must go to it.In a new technique, however, the cloned CD4 protein is not connected to a cell. It floats freely, so many more can be put into the blood to keep the AIDS virus away from real CD4 proteins on T4 cells. One report says the AIDS virus connects to the cloned proteins j ust as effectively as to real protein. That report was based on tests with blood cells grown in labs. The technique is just now beginning t o be tested in animals. If successful, it may be tested in humans within a year.1. The new technique can ________.A. cure AIDSB. kill the AIDS virusC. prevent the AIDS virus from spreadingD. produce new medicines for AIDS2. When the AIDS virus enters the blood, it is reproduced by ________.A. the inside of the virus itselfB. any blood cells in the bodyC. the CD4 proteinD. the genetic material of T4 cells3 The AIDS virus connects to cloned proteins instead of to the real ones because ________.A. the cloned proteins stay on the T4 cellsB. the cloned proteins can float freely in the bloodC. it connects to cloned proteins more effectively than to the real onesD. the cloned proteins are made by genetic engineering methods4. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. The new technique has been tested in labs.B. The new technique is being tested in animals.C. The new technique may be tested in humans.D. The new technique is now under clinical test.5 Which of the following could be the best title of this passage?A. AIDS---a Fatal Disease.B. A New Technique infighting AIDS.C. A Report on the Spread of AIDS Virus.D. The Technique of Cloned CD4 Protein.Passage TWOQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. During the early ears of last century, wheat was seen as the very lifeblood of Western Canada. When the crops were good, the economy was good; when the crops failed, there was depression. People on city streets watched the yields and the price of wheat with almost as much feeling as if they wee growers. The marketing of wheat became an increasingly favorite topic of conversation.War set the stage for the most dramatic events in marketing the western crop. For years, farmers mistrusted speculative(投机的)grain selling as carried on through the Winnipeg Grain Exchange. Wheat prices were generally low in the autumn, but farmers could not wait for markets to improve. It had happened too often that they sold their wheat soon after harvest when farm debts were coming due(到期),only to see prices rising and speculators getting rich. On various occasions, producergroups asked for firmer controls, but governments had no wish to become involved, at least not until wartime wheat prices threatened to run wild.Anxious to check(控制) inflation(通货膨胀) and rising living costs, the federal government appointed a board(董事会) of grain supervisors to handle deliveries from the crops of 1917 and 1918. Grain Exchange trading was suspended (暂停) and farmers sold at prices fixed by the board. To handle the crop of 1919, the government appointed the first Canadian Wheat Board, with full authority tobuy, sell, and set prices.6. The author uses the term “lifeblood”(Line1, para1.) to indicate that wheat was _______.A. difficult to produce in large quantitiesB. was easily affected by animals and plantsC. essential to the health of the countryD. expensive to gather and transport7. According to the passage, most farmers’ debts had to be paid __________. A. when the autumn harvest had just been completedB. because wheat prices were highC. as soon as the Winnipeg Grain Exchange demanded payment D, when crop failure caused depression8. According to the passage, wheat prices became uncontrolled because of conditions caused by _____.A. farmersB. supervisorsC. weatherD. war9. The word “check” (Line 1, Para.3) could best be replaced by which of the following?A. controlB. investigateC. financeD. reinforce10. According to the passage, a preliminary step in the creation of the Canadian Wheat Board was the appointment of ______.A. the Winnipeg Grain ExchangeB. a board of supervisorsC. several producer groupsD. a new governmentPassage ThreeQuestions 10 to 15 are based on the following passage. YellowstonePark is visited by two million people every summer and is the oldest, largest and most visitedwilderness in the world. All are welcome and are invited on arrival to leave their cars and explore on foot.Yellowstone, a national park for ever 100 years, lies in the State of Wyoming, to the east of the RockyMountain. It is also in thecenter of the North American continent, midway between the equator and the North Pole, at a height of over 2300 meters. The very cold winter in this area closes the park around mid-November and lasts until April or even May. In February the temperature falls as low as 60F degree below freezing, and the animals that spend winter in the park are best able to live in the conditions such as bison, wapiti, beavers and otters. Fortunately, the area around the hot springs and geysers becomes a centrally heated oasis(绿洲) in the desert of snow, providing warmth and a certain mount of food for the animals. Bison used to go around the plains in their millions until they were hunted almost to extinction(灭绝) by white men with guns. In 1900 only two dozen of them remained in the park. However, since they become a protected animal, their numbers have risen to over two thousand. The end of winter is the mostdangerous time for the animals as food becomes even less and they take great risks(冒险) to find it, such as walking across thin ice. This period is known as “winterkill”, when many of theweak and the old die, often from being too tired out, thus providing food for scavengers such as the coyote (a kind of wolf). With the arrival of summer, plants reappear and the animals fill themselves with rich food. The young grow strong and the tourists return to enjoy the warmth or 4 months before YellowstonePark freezes over again.11 Bison used to go in danger. With the protection, the number is ________ now.A. falling downB. going upC. staying the sameD. becoming less12The Rocky Mountains are _____________A. in the center of WyomingB. to the west of YellowstoneParkC. in the north of YellowstoneParkD. to the east of YellowstonePark13Which of the following is NOT an animal?A. otterB. beaverC. geysersD. coyote14.At the end of the 19th century_______________.A. bison ran around the plains in their millionsB. bison were hunted almost to extinctionC. bison became a kind of protected animalD. their number rose more than 20015.From the text, we can know that “ scavengers in the last paragraph are_______________A. animals which feed on other dead animalsB. places where water comes naturally from the groundC. birds which live in grass seedsD. animals which always eat as much as possiblePassage FourQuestions 15 to 20 are based on the following passage. What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do, you must be an optimist(乐观者), a leader, an active person who enjoy life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grays and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are strong-minded and determined. You wish to succeed and want other people to see youaresuccessful. At least this is what psychologist(心理学家) tell us and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, and the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us that we don’t choose our favourite color as we grow up. If you happen tolove brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly. A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful and more comfortable than a dark green one, and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing(压抑). Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather thanblack or dark gray.Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or a few colorful things. Remember also that you will know your friends and your enemies better when you find out what colors they like and dislike. And don’tforget that anyone can guess a lot about your character when you choose a piece of handkerchief or alampshade.16. The fact that a child picks up a language 64 issurprising: at one year old, a child is able to65 "bye-bye"; at two, he is able to use fifty words; by three he begins to 66 tenses. The famous American linguist Noam Chomsky 67 that human beings have a sort of built-in system for language use, and that the68 is only secondary. Children are not taught language 69 they are taught arithmetic. Other linguists, 70, hold the view that achild learns 71 of his language from the hints in theenvironment. 72, theorists of both schools 73 that there is a biologicalbasis for language and language use. The 74 is which is more important, the inner ability or the environment. This is certainly a field 75 to be explored. Researchers from both schools are busy finding evidence to 76 their own theory, but 77 side is persuading the other. It seems that in order to 78 why a child learns a language so easily, we have to 79 the joint efforts ofboth schools.
