On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime(一角硬币)left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while “Would you please give me some … a drink of water?” the boy dare not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.”As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

The wind was blowing heavily, and the trees were swaying in the strong wind. It began to rain cats and dogs. Soon, the road was filled with puddles from the rain.On such a stormy afternoon, my mother took my five-year-old brother, Christopher, and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper. “So many toys,” the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy color, “that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit them all!”Christopher and I couldn’t have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot, through the cold and biting rain, as fast as our little legs could carry us. We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella, which never worked when she wanted it to. “Christine! Take care of your young brother!” Mother shouted at the top of her voice.“Christine! I’m going to find the Lego section (乐高积木区)! There’s a new pirate ship I want, and I have four dollars! Maybe I can buy it!” Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly. I only half heard him. I took a right turn and, to my wide-eyed delight, found myself in the midst of the Barbie (芭比) World.I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple math in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap of thunder roared from the storm outside. I jumped at the noise, dropping the doll to the floor. The lights flickered (闪烁) once and died, covering everything in a blanket of blackness. Thunder continued to shakethe sky and lightning illuminated the store for seconds, casting frightening shadows on my mind.

I was lucky enough to co-teach fourth grade with him.Mr. Rowe had infinite patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one her performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw. Steven couldn’t stand school. He didn’t like being picked last for kickball. He didn’t li ke the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn’t like himself. The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe’s classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbook onto the floor.Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him: “Hi, Steven. I’m happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year.” Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom. So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused. That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball at recess. “Hey, Steven,” Mr. Rowe commented, “You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick.” Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him! After the kickball, Steven sat as closer to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe , his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful. That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was evident that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and more with each passing day.

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fight ing! Let's go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore. But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him.Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the backroom when he heard the ringing of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy’s family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the backroom to greet his customer.“And how can I help you, little lady?” Pappy’s voice was joyful.“Hello, sir.” The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, “I’d like to buy a present, sir.”“Well, let’s see,” Pappy said, “who is this present for?”“My grandpa. It’s for my grandpa. But I don’t know what to get.”Pappy began to make suggestions. “How about a pocket watch? It’s in good condition.” The little girl didn’t answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy’s face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement.“This is just right,” the little girl said. “Momma says grandpa loves music.”Just then, Pappy’s expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl’s heart, he told her, “I’m sorry, Missy. That’s not for sale. Maybe you r grandpa would like this little radio.”The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed, “No, I don’t think so.”In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged (疏远的) daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.

When I was ten years old, I lived with my family in a small house in rural South Jersey. I often accompanied my mother to the A&P to buy groceries. Without a car, we walked, and I would help her carry the bags.My mother had to shop every carefully, as she was a waitress, and her salary barely sustained (勉强维持) us. One day, while she was weighing prices, a promotional display for the World Book Encyclopedia caught my eye. The volumes were beautifully cream-colored. V olume I was ninety-nine cents with a ten-dollar purchase. All I could think of while shopping was the book. I stood at the register (收银台) with my mother, holding my breath as the cashier rang up the items. It came to over eleven dollars. My mother produced a five, some singles, and a handful of change. As she was counting out the money, I somehow found the courage to ask for the encyclopedia “Could we get one?” I said, showing her the display. “It’s only ninety-nine cents.”I did not understand my mothers increasing anxiety; she did not have enough change and had to sacrifice a large can of peas to pay the amount, “Not now, Patricia,” she said sternly. “Today is not a good day.” I packed the groceries and followed her home, upset. The next Saturday, my mother gave me a dollar and sent me to the A&P alone. Two quarts of milk and a loaf of bread —that’s what a dollar in 1957. I went straight to the World Book display. There was only one first volume left, which I placed in my cart (购物车). I didn’t need a cart, but took one so I could read as I went up and down the aisles. A lot of time went by and I knew I had to leave, but I couldn’t bear to part with the book. With no detective in sight, I, impulsively (冲动地), put it inside my shirt and zipped up my jacket. I was a tall, skinny kid, and I am certain the shape of the book was obvious. My heart beating rapidly, I headed for the register.___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________Back home, I told my mother what I had promised the detective.___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________注意:1.

Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. “What are you doing? “I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be stuck there, so far from home. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute, ”she called back through the open windows.Impatiently, I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before they settled on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty-handed.Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what di d you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist(前台接待员). ”“What?”She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven’t received any in a while. ”I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name? “To this she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me. ”Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. Let's go!” Justin let go of the curtain and rushed to the door with Mary.It was only 5:00 a. m., so everyone else in the house was still asleep. "Maybe we should first have a breakfast, "she thought. But she still followed Justin out the door, down the back steps, and out onto the boat dock (码头). The fog had settled over the lake, making it impossible to see anything."Do you see anything?" Mary asked, moving forward for a closer look."Nothing. They wanted to maintain th eir high living standard so they didn’t mind paying a lot for it. After purchasing everything they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it off at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs. They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods at their home. The old porter quoted just a $20, a price well below the market rate for delivering goods at couple’s home in his cart. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make money for every single meal so he needed anything he could earn. The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, two hours passed, but the porter still hadn’t delivered their stuff. The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn to feed himself for one time in a day, and you handed him everything we purchased for our big party. I am sure instead of delivering at our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.”They both left towards the market. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.“I am hu rrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?”Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married. But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition (学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I m arried and had three children, and I thought: “There goes my diploma.”Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret. I didn’t give up hope of her being back to school in some way.One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That’s the answer,” I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I’ll just sign her up for night school.Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: “Mrs. Schantz, why don’t you come back to school?”I laughed: “There’s no way! I’m 55!” But he p ersisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们).One day, Ali took Zahra''s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn''t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali''s running shoes. Zahra''s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes. The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞)with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2.应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly jabbering about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night. One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be.The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You're my knight in shining armor."He was smiling and basking in pride, looking back at her as if to reply, "You got that right."The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, "Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus."The ticket lady quoted the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lip began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?"The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money. How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn‘t have enough money to take them to the circus?Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I feel sorry for them.

I encountered God the summer I was five. My father had finally grown too sick to get out of bed, so the heat and nervous tension in the air inside the house made it impossible to breathe. I would escape by squeezing under the front porch. All manner of creatures lived there, but I mostly ignored them, with one exception — a little frog who, every time I crawled (爬行) under the porch, stared at me with great, golden eyes.In late June, the frog finally hopped (跳跃) toward my arm and stared at me, demanding eye contact. Once he had my attention, he opened his wide mouth and said, “Hello, Sophie.”I should have been shocked, but for some reason, I wasn’t. Perhaps at five years old, I was more recept ive to something against the laws of nature. At any rate, I was not shocked that a frog could speak. I had a more pressing question."How do you know my name?”The frog blinked slowly. “I know everything. I am God.”I spoke, "You can’t be God. You’re too small.”He extended a long, webbed finger and was pointing to the edge of the porch’s shadow— to the spot where my mother had tried to grow flowers there for years. She had stopped trying when my father’s condition worsened."Look there,” commanded the fro g, and I stared as a beautiful white flower blossomed as if stretching its limbs after a long sleep. In my five years, I had never seen anything so splendid.God and I became good friends that summer. I spent every day under the porch, talking to him.Sometimes I asked God questions. Sometimes he answered. Once, I asked him where Heaven was."Heaven,” he said, “is where I live.”In August, my father’s illness had progressed to the point that I was sent to my aunt’s house in Virginia. I told God I would be back soon, and then waited in Virginia for my father to get better.

Immediately, we drove to a nearby farm. The farmer opened the barn door. Out ran a black-and-white cat like a flash. I rubbed my eyes. “Checkers!” I cried. I scooped him up. And Checkers purred. “I miss you so much!”I said, rubbing noses with Checkers. The farmer sm iled. “Good thing I saw that advertisement in the paper.”To my great surprise, I looked at Dad, wondering. “You put an advertisement in the paper?”Dad nodded, his face turning red. As Checkers jumped up and down around Dad, he patted Checkers gently. It was then that I realized Dad was not a little concerned about our cat. Checkers batted at him with his paw. Dad laughed. “That cat, ” he said, “It’s good to have him back. ”And I, then, warmed up by these two family members, stood up for a while, with tears welling up in my eyes.【解析】本篇书面表达是读后续写。

“If mum finds out that I'm going to the beach, I'll be in big trouble.” I said to myself softly in a low voice.
I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk casually into the kitchen. As I was walking towards the back door, mum asked without looking up from her “dish-washing”, “Where are you going?” I answered back without hesitation,“ I am going to the garden to play.” After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed a sign of relief. My plan had wo rked out fine so far. I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started running towards the bus stop at top speed, After half an hour I was at the beach scanning the crowd for my friends, Jimmy and Bobby. Two young men were racing in the canoes (独木舟). After a while, I saw them near a coconut tree. I ran towards them and got into my swimming trunk (游泳裤). For about an hour, we played volleyball happily.
Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore. I wanted to show off my swimming skills so I declared to help get the ball for them.
I dived into the water and started swimming at a steady pace. After swimming for about ten minutes, I became tired but when I saw that the ball was only a few feet away from me, I put in
an extra burst of speed. However, just as I was going to get the ball, a very strong current swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, a string of weed (海草)tangled (缠绕) up with my feet and I could not swim properly.
I struggled to keep afloat but it was no use. “ If I had listened to my parents, this would never have happened,” I thought silently.
Paragraph 1
Finally, after struggling for a minute or two, I still got pulled underwater.

Paragraph 1
Finally, after struggling For a minute or two, I still got putted underwater. I told myself I should never give up. Then I pulled the weed again with great efforts. The weed finally broke. I swam back to the surface to take a deep breath. I saw two young men in canoes, racing each other. I was exhausted and shouted for help. The two men saw me and raced towards me. By the time they reached me, I had been already unconscious.
Paragraph 2
When I woke up, I was in an empty room lying on a bed. It was not until a doctor came into the room that I realized that
I was in a hospital. Jimmy and Bobby told me the two young men brought me to the shore and sent me to the hospital. After
a few minutes, my parents with half angry and half worried faces walked in. My parents scolded me for running out of the house secretly but were also glad that I was not seriously injured. I will never forget that terrifying experience. Neither will I ever want to show off again.
Finally, after struggling for a minute or two, I still got pulled underwater.
When I woke up, I was in an empty room lying on a bed.
