Part I Reading Comprehension 40%Directions: There are 4 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by somequestions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice. Please write the answer on the Answer Sheet .Passage 1Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: thelonging for love, the search for knowledge, and the unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy -- ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness -- that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what -- at least -- I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I can ’t, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.1. Passage 2Since Tiger was so fortunate with the game of golf, he decided to start a foundation called: The Tiger Woods Foundation which starts schools in urban American cities that provided an education for less fortunate kids. Tiger also supports and donates money to The First Tee program. The First Tee program’s goal is to provide learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life enhancing values through the game of golf. Tiger himself has also been an idol or hero for many kids around the world because of his dominance and records throughout his golfing career. Because of this many kids have started learning the game of golf.Tiger ’s real first name is Eldrick. He was born on December 30, 1975 and grew up in Cypress California. He began taking an interest in golf when he was just six months old. He would watch his dad, Earl, hit golf balls into a net and would try to copy his swing. He was given the nickname Tiger after a Vietnamese soldier and friend of his father. Tiger Woods appeared on TV practicing his swing at the age of two and by the time he was three, he had already shot a 48 on a nine-hole course. When he was five, the golf world began to take notice of Tiger and he was featured on the cover of Golf Digest. Tiger Woods was just 16 and still in high school when he played in his first professional golf tournament - the Nissan Los Angeles Open. Two years later, he went to college at Stanford University where he won ten collegiate events and the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) title. While he appeared in only a handful of professional tournaments during his years in college, it wasn’t long before Tiger Woods would be winning pro events at a ridiculous rate.Tiger Woods, who is now 28 years old, has had an amazing career since becoming a pro golfer in 1996. He has won 53 worldwide tournaments, 40 of those wins were on the PGA TOUR, including eight major championships: the 1997, 2001, and 2002 Masters, the 1999 and 2000 PGA Championships, the 2000 and 2002 U.S. Open Championship and the 2000 British Open. Tiger has now won an incredible 9 out of 16 World Golf Championship events he has played in.Tiger relates to the book because he is a hero to others near and far. People around the world notice his dedication, time spent working to perfect his game, his fitness routines and since he is young, all the kids like that. Even if you didn’t play golf, you would know who Tiger is and he has influenced many people to take up the game and learn more than just how to play: to learn the integrity and rules which also help you in life.To wrap things up, Tiger Woods started the game at a young age and set many records that may never be broken and has changed the game forever. He’s a hero, incredible golfer, and a generous giving man. He works hard at everything he does and院系: 班级: 姓名: 学号: 装 订 线gives back whenever he can. That is why I chose Tiger to be my hero.6. What might be the best title for the passage?A) Tiger Woods B) The world’s Best GolferC) The Brightest Sports Star D) Sports Hero: Tiger WoodsPassage 340 years ago the idea of disabled people doing sport was never heard of. But when the annual games for the disabled were started at Stoke Mandeville, England in 1948 by Sir Ludwing Guttmann, the situation began to change.Sir Ludwing Guttmann, who had been driven to England in 1939 from Nazi Germany, had been asked by the British government to set up an injuries center at Stoke Mandeville Hospital near London. His ideas about treating injuries included sport for the disabled. In the first games just two teams of injured soldiers took part. The next year, 1949, five teams took part. From those beginnings, things have developed fast. Teams now come from abroad to Stoke Mandeville every year. In 1960 the first Olympics for the Disabled were held in Rome. Now, every four years the Olympic Games for the Disabled are held, if possible, in the same place as the normal Olympic Games although they are organized separately. In other years Games for the Disabled are still held at Stoke Mandeville. In the 1984 wheelchair Olympic Games, 1064 wheelchair athletes from about 40 countries took part. Unfortunately, they were held at Stoke Mandeville and not in Los Angeles, along with other Olympics. The Games have been a great success in promoting international friendship and understanding, and in proving that being disabled does not mean you can’t enjoy sport. One small source of disappointment for those who organize and take part in the games, however, has been the unwillingness of the International Olympic Committee to include disabled events at the Olympic Games for the able-bodied.Perhaps a few more years are still needed to convince those fortunate enough not to be disabled that their disabled fellow athletes should not be excluded.11. The first games for the disabled were held _______ after Sir Ludwing Guttmannarrived in England.A) 40 years B) 21 yearsC) 10 years D) 9 years12. Besides Stoke Mandeville, surely the games for the disabled were once held in_______.A) New York B) LondonC) Rome D) Los Angeles13. In Paragraph 3, the word “athletes” means _______.A) people who support the games B) people who watch the gamesC) people who organize the games D) people who compete in the games14. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A) Sir Ludwing Guttmann is an early organizer of the games for the disabled.B) Sir ludwing Guttmann is an injured soldier.C) Sir Ludwing Guttmann is from Germany.D) Sir Ludwing Guttmann is welcomed by the British government.15. From the passage, we may conclude that the writer is _______.A) one of the organizers of the games for the disabledB) a disabled person who once took part in the gamesC) against holding the games for the disabledD) in favor of holding the games for the disabledPassage 4Books are to mankind what memory is to the individual. They contain the history of our race, the discoveries we have made, the accumulated knowledge and experience of ages. They picture for us the marvels and beauties of nature, help us in our difficulties, comfort us in sorrow and in suffering, change hours of weariness into moments of delight, store our minds with ideas, fill them with good and happy thoughts, and lift us out of and above ourselves. Many of those who have had, as we say, all that this world can give, have yet told us they owed much of their purest happiness to books. Aseham, in “The Schoolmaster,” tells a touching story of his last visit to Lady Jane Grey. He found her sitting in an oriel window reading Plato’s beautiful account of the death of Socrates. Her father and mother were hunting in the park. The hounds were in full cry and their voices came in through the open window. He expressed his surprise that she had not joined them. But, said she, “I wish that all their pleasure in the park is but a shadow to the pleasure I find in Plato.”Macaulay had wealth and fame, rank and power, and yet he tells us in his biography that he owed the happiest hours of his life to books. In a charming letter to a little girl, he says: “Thank you for your very pretty letter. I am always glad to make my little girl happy, and nothing pleases me so much as to see that she likes books, for when she is as old as I am, she will find that they are better than all the tarts and cakes, toys and plays, and sights in the world. If any one would make me the greatest king that ever lived, with palaces and gardens and fine dinners, and wines and coaches, and beautiful clothes, and hundreds of servants, on condition that I should not read books, I would not be a king. I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading.”Books, indeed, endow us with a whole enchanted palace of thoughts. “There is a wider prospect,” says Jean Paul Richter, “from Parnassus than from a throne.” In one way they give us an even more vivid idea than the actual reality, just as reflections are often more beautiful than real nature. “All are mirrors,”says George Macdonald. “The commonest room is a room in a poem when I look in the glass.”Precious and priceless are the blessings which the books scatter around our daily paths. We walk, in imagination, with the noblest spirits, through the most sublime andenchanting regions.16. This passage argues that _______.A)books are the memory of an individualB)books can tell us what kind of memory an individual hasC)human beings need books just as an individual needs memoryD)an individual needs books to help him memorize what has happened17. According to the passage, books can _______.A) change our mood B) change the time-schedule of our activityC) improve our social position D) keep us in sadness18. Lady Jane Grey _______.A)saw her parents hunting in the shadow in the parkB)knew that her parents enjoyed hunting in the shadowC)believed that her parents’ pleasure in hunting was inferior to hers in reading PlatoD)enjoyed sitting in the shadow near window opening to a park while reading Plato’sworks19. But Hill, supported by general public opinion, eventually overcame opposition, and late in 1839 the Penny Post was established. From then until the first world war the cost of sending a letter any distance within the United Kingdom remained at one penny. The gloomy prophecies (预言) of the critics were not fulfilled: the profits of the Post Office were maintained and improvements in transport and administration made it possible not only to handle the increased volume of correspondence but also to extend postal facilities. Before this great change took place, the charge for sending a letter varied according to the distance the letter was carried and had to be paid for on delivery by the person to whom it was addressed. The lowest charge was four pence and for long distances as much as eighteen pence. Such high rates, when wages were low, could rarely be afforded by poor people, who were often compelled to refuse letters from their dear ones because they were unable to pay. Under the new scheme, a letter was paid for by the sender, who affixed(贴上) to it an adhesive(粘的) postage stamp, the cost of which was within reach of all. Thus the poor were enabled to exchange news with their relations and friends at a time when many of them had left their homes to seek work elsewhere.Businessmen also found cheap postage a boom and, since it soon turned out to be a great financial success, the new scheme was, before long, adopted by every civilized country in the world ——a final tribute(明证) to the wisdom and vision of its promoter.21. “Some said that it (i.e. Rowland Hill's scheme) would not pay” means ________. A. some said that people would refuse to pay for the scheme B. some said that the scheme would not be profitable C. some said that the scheme was not economicalD. some said that they did not have enough money to pay for the scheme 22. Rowland Hill's system is known as the ‘Penny post ’ ________.A. because it undertook the delivery of all inland letters for the charge of one pennyB. since it was established late in 1839C. because many people who used its facilities were poorD. as a result of the gloomy prophecies of those who had said scheme would not pay 23. Postal facilities were extended after the introduction of the Penny Post ________. A. because the volume of correspondence increasedB. as a result of improvements in transport and administrationC. until the first world warD. provided that the cost of sending a letter remained at one penny 24. Under the old system the poor had frequently been compelled to refuse letters ________.A. because they could not afford to pay the high postage rates which had to be paid on receipt of a letter。

It cannot be explained briefly, as is possible when describing drinking in many other countries. There are special laws to limit drinking, and Americans enjoy their own tastes.AlcoholAmerican laws concerning alcohol differ from state to state and city to city. In some towns, even states, alcohol is not allowed for sale at all except for the very weak 3.2 percent alcohol beer, know n as “three-two” beer. Some places do not allow the sale of alcohol on Sundays, even in shops—you may find a bar with locks on its alcohol shelves. Other places permit alcohol to be sold on Sunday afternoons and evenings, but not on Sunday mornings. In many parts of America, you are not allowed to drink alcohol in a public place. That is, you may not sit in a park or walk along a street while drinking beer, and you cannot even take a nice bottle of wine on your picnic. And in many states you are not allowed to drink alcohol while driving, or even have an opened alcohol bottle in the car. Some bars have a license only for beer and wine. Others are also allowed to sell spirits (烈性酒) and, as Americans say, “mixed drinks”. Many bars have a period known as “happy hour”, often longer than an hour, when they sell drinks at lower-than-usual prices. This is usually around 5 p.m. and may be only on certain days of the week. The Legal Drinking AgeThe legal drinking age differs from place to place but is generally between 18 and 21. Some places permit the consumption of beer at 18 but spirits only at 21. Others permit the consumption only of “three-two” beer from 18 to 21. Young peopl e therefore often drive from one place to another with more free drinking laws. In some parts of the US young people are allowed to vote, marry, raise children, keep full-time jobs, be tried in courts as adults, join the army and even buy guns—but NOT have a glass of beer. In some places people aged between 18 and 21 are allowed to go into bars but not allowed to drink.Another even more interesting aspect of American drinking age laws is that in some places people below legal drinking age are not even allowed to sell alcohol. Proof of Legal Drinking AgeIn most places these drinking laws are fairly rigidly kept. You may, for example, find people lining up to get into a bar and discover that the line is caused by a guard on the door who is asking everybody for identification. If you ask him why he wants to know who you are, he will inform you that he actually wants proof of how old you are. On such occasions Americans often show their driving licenses, which have their date of birth written on them.BeerAmerican beer, with very few exceptions, ranges from the average to the terrible. There are not many types of beer in the US—”light” and “dark” are two terms commonly used.It is therefore normal to order beer simply by brand names. In a restaurant, in fact, i t is quite all right to order “a beer”, and they will tell you what they have.It is not necessary, either, to specify quantity when ordering beer. If it comes in bottles or cans, you will get a bottle or can, and if it’s “on tap”(可以随时取用的),you will get a glass, unless you order a “pitcher”(大酒罐). The latter is very convenient to serve, since you can then take the pitcher and glasses to your table and keep filling up without going back to the bar. It is harder, however, to know how much you have drunk. Some beer comes in bottles with taps that look as if they need an opener, but youcan, in fact, open them up by hand—though you have to be very careful not to hurt yourself. It is possible, in some stores and bars, to find a wide variety of beer from all over the world, especially Western Europe and Australia, and it is fun to try them. Cocktail (鸡尾酒)Cocktails and “mixed drinks” are much more popular and stronger in the US than in Europe, and visitors may not be familiar with some of the term. “On the rocks”, as you probably know, means with ice, while “straight up” or “up” means neat and without ice. There are hundreds of different cocktails, and there is no space here to list all the different names.WhiskeyIn America “whiskey” means bourbon unless otherwise indicated. Bourbon(波旁威士忌)is a rather oily spirit made from corn. Rye (黑麦) whiskey is ca lled “rye” and Scotch whiskey “Scotch”.WineIn bars wine can often be bought by the glass. Don’t be misled by names. “Chablis” is used to refer to white wine, and “Burgundy” to red—Americans seem never to have heard of white Burgundy.21.( ) Limits on drinking in the US are the strictest in the world.22.( ) Alcohol in some states can be sold if they are not very strong.23.( ) In many states people are not allowed to drink alcohol while driving buttheycan keep opened alcohol bottles in the car.24.( ) The legal drinking age in the US is between 18 and 21.25.( ) Americans often show their driving licenses if asked for identification whenthey get into a bar.26.( ) You are requested to clarify how much you want when you order beer.27.( ) Many stores and bars offer a wide variety of beer from all over the world.28.If you say “straight up” when ordering cocktail in the US, you mean you wantit_____________29.In America, “whiskey” usually refers to a kind of oily spirit made from__________________.30.“Rye” is another name for _______________________________III. You should decide on the best choice andmark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single linethrough the center.Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Nursing at Beth Israel Hospital produces the best patient care possible. If we are to solve the nursing shortage, hospital administration and doctors everywhere would do well to follow Beth Israel’s example. At Beth Israel each patient is assigned to a primary nurse who visits at length with the patient and constructs a full-scale health account that covers everything from his medical history to his emotional state. Then she writes a care plan centered on the patient’s illness but which also includes everything else that is necessa ry.The primary nurse stays with the patient through the hospitalization, keeping track with his progress and seeking further advice from his doctor. If a patient at Beth Israel is not responding to treatment, it is not uncommon for his nurse to propose another approach to his doctor. What the doctor at Beth Israel has in the primary nurse is a true colleague.Nursing at Beth Israel also involves a decentralized(分散的) nursing administration. Every floor, every unit is a self-contained organization. There are nurse-managers instead of head nurses. In addition to their medical duties they do all their own hiring and dismissing, employee advising, and they make salary recommendations. The warning followed survey of the impressions of campus life gained by students of school. Poor interviewing of theapplicants, infrequent contacts with tutors, worries over student safety, and even complaint over the food were all seen as symptoms of the pressure on universities. Head teachers said that standards could well drop if the squeeze on universities budgets continued. A survey was carried out because of fears that the level of green area in universities had declined. A great number of student suicides had raised concerns among head teachers.Although most of the 6,000 students surveyed were enjoying university life, almost a third were less than satisfied with their course. About one in ten had serious financial problems and some give alarming accounts of conditions around their halls of their residence. Incidents mentioned included a fatal stabbing and shooting outside a hall of residence, the petrol bombing of cars near another residence, and two racist attacks. Nine percent of women and seven percent of men rated security as unsatisfactory in the area where they lived. Stanford University had the lowest satisfaction rating. Lancaster and Kinston universities were rated the safest. The survey confirmed head teachers’ fears about contact between students and tutors slipping, with a quarter of the students seeing their tutors only every three weeks. New students, used to regular contact with their teachers, found it hard to adapt to the change. Interview techniques were a cause for concern, with the school calling for more training of the university staff involved in admissions. Some headmasters complained that interviews were increasingly “odd”. One greeted an applicant by throwing him an apple. Another interview lasted only three minutes. About a quarter of the students found the workload at university heavier than they had expected. Imperial College London, Oxford, and Cambridge universities registered by far the highest workload. There were differences between subjects, with architectures, engineering, veterinary science, medicine and some science subjects demanding the most work. Veterinary science was nevertheless the most popular subject, followed by physiotherapy and history of art. General engineering, economics, computing and sociology were the least popular. The survey also confirmed that previous concerns about possible racial prejudice in admissions to medical courses. Applicants with names suggesting an ethnic minority background had been rejected with qualificationsas good as successful white candidates.36. According to the passage, the main problem existing in the interview of admission is that _______.A. the interviewers often greeted the applicants by throwing an appleB. the interviewers spent only a few minutes interviewing an applicantC. the interviewers were not knowledgeable to interview the applicantsD. the interviewers lack enough training and interview techniques37. From the passage, we can learn that________.A. most students surveyed were satisfied with university lifeB. many head teachers were killed by the students in universityC. veterinary science was popular for its workload was lightD. students were worried about the squeeze on university budgets38. From the passage, we can see that the author’s description of the quality ofuniversity life in Britain is ________.A. objectiveB. subjectiveC. pessimisticD. arbitrary39. Among the following, which is the proper statement of the st atus of the students’ security?A. Fatal stabbing and shooting often happened outside the hall of residenceB. Part I Reading Comprehension 40%Directions: There are 4 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by somequestions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.PPassage 1Scientists have identified the elephants that live on the island of Borneo in Malaysia as separate from other Asian elephants. The group Worldwide Fund for Nature, or W-W-F, announced the finding. This follows genetic tests on waste from Borneo's Pygmy Elephants (婆罗州矮象), as they are called. The Sabah Wildlife Department in Malaysia permitted researchers to collect droppings from forests on Borneo. They sent the material to Columbia University in New York City. There, the Department of Evolution and Environmental Biology carried out the tests.Scientists compared the DNA to the genes of elephants that live in mainland Malaysia and in Sri Lanka, India and other Asian countries. The research shows that Borneo elephants were separated from other Asian elephants about three-hundred-thousand years ago. Some differences are easy to see. The Borneo elephants are smaller than other elephants. Their ears and tails make up a larger part of their bodies. And their tusks (象牙) are straighter. Also, the chairman of the W-W-F program in Malaysia says the Borneo elephants are gentler compared to other Asian elephants. The group says the test results mean that the pygmy elephants of Borneo should be treated as their own kind. It says the elephants should not be permitted to reproduce with other Asian elephants. It says there should also be research into the reproductive rates of the Borneo elephants and survival of their young. The nature group notes a long-standing dispute about where the Borneo elephants came from. One theory is that their ancestors were gifts from the British East India Company to the Sultan of Sulu in the seventeenth century. The scientists, however, say the new findings reject the argument that humans brought the elephants to the island. The other theory is that the elephants could remain from a native population that traveled between Borneo and Sumatra. During the ice ages, more than ten-thousand years ago, sea levels were much lower. Land sometimes linked the two islands. The elephants could have been trapped on Borneo after the water rose again.1. Like the flu, computer viruses evolve. Last year’s immunization isn’t any good for this year’s disease because every time someone invents a new medication(医药), someone else invents a new disease. Nevertheless, a few simple precautions will help you against all but the cleverest hacker. For a PC user, he or she should use good virus-checking software. But a word of caution: Not every program fixes every virus, and when a new bug hits, the remedy takes a while to reach the market. A PC user must keep it in his or her m ind to back up the data and anyone who doesn’t have a backup drive is begging for trouble. When a new file or application is loaded onto the computer, one should immediately pass it through antivirus software so that the viruses can be caught and killed before they do any harm. If you receive a mail with a file attached to it from someone you don’t know, then do not open that file because these days most viruses and their cousins, networking-infecting worms, are spread through files attached to email or downloaded from the Web. Finally, if your computers are infected, you should not be panic and you should use a friend’s computer to search the Web for a cure.Where Viruses are concerned, what grandma used to tell you is extremely relevant: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.11. The sentence “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” in the last paragraph is usedto ________.A) remind the computer users of the importance of taking preventive actionsB) prove that old generations have lots of experience which is worth learningC) warn the computer users of the danger of virusesD) explain that prevention is the same as curing12. Computer viruses have something in common with the flu because ________.A) they can invent a new diseaseB) they can help computer users against the hackersC) they can invent a new medicationD) they can evolve into new types13. It can be concluded from the passage that ________.A) a new medicine can cure flu foreverB) people have found a thorough solution to the problem of virusesC) many computers are immune to virusesD) the cleverest hacker can break into any computer14. According to the passage, computer viruses can ________.A) make a computer user rather annoyedB) tear people's hair outC) conceal the secret legitimate files and programsD) spread bacteria from one computer to another15. To protect their computers, people should ________.A) stop surfing the Internet to cut off the connections with virusesB) fix every virus with their new antivirus softwareC) back up important data regularlyD) load new files or applications onto the computersPassage 4All over the world mention of English education suggests a picture of the “public schools’, and it suggests in particular the names of certain very famous institutions—Eton college, Harrow school and Winchester college; but people do not always realize what place these institutions occupy in the whole educational system.Eton is the best known of the public schools, which, in spite of their name, are not really public at all, but independent and private secondary schools taking boys from the age of 13 to 18 years. In presenting an overall picture of English education it would be reasonable to concentrate on the state system alone and refer briefly to the public schools. The public schools in reality form a very small part of the whole system of secondary education; only about one out of forty English boys goes to a public school, and one out of 1,500 goes to Eton. However, although the public schools are not important numerically, they have been England’s most peculiar and characteristic contribution to educational methods, and they have an immerse influence on the whole of English educational practice and on the English social structure.
