The situation seemed hopeless. From the first day he entered my junior-high classroom, Willard P. Frank- lin existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me, his teacher. My attempts at establishing a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference. Even a Good Morning Willar received only an inau- dible grunt. I could see that his class- mates fared no better. Willard was strict- ly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his barrier of silence.Shortly after the Thanksgiving holi- day, we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district.Christmas is a season of giving, I told my students. There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food, clothing and toys for these needy people. We start the collection tomorrow. When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten. Except for Willard P. Franklin. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he strolled up to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container.I don t need no milk for lunch, he mumbled. For a moment, just a mo- ment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk. That night, after school, I took our meager contributions to the school principal. I couldn t help sharing the incident that had taken place.I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him, I told theprincipal.Yes, I believe it sounds hopeful, he nodded. And I have a hunch we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us.I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it.As I gazed down to read, I dis- covered Willard P. Franklin and his family were the top names on the list.

英语优美散文名篇的欣赏英语散文一cloudsIve opened the curtain of my east window here above the computer, and I sit now in a holy theater before a sky-blue stage.A little cloud above the neighbors trees resembles Jimmy Durantes nose for a while, then becomes amorphous as it slips on north. Other clouds follow, big and little and tiny on their march toward whereness. Wisps of them lead or droop because there must always be leading and drooping. The trees seem to laugh at the clouds while yet reaching for them with swaying branches. Trees must think that they are real, rooted, somebody, and that perhaps the clouds are only tickled water which sometimes blocks their sun. But trees are clouds, too, of green leavesclouds that only move a little. Trees grow and change and dissipate like their airborne cousins. And what am I but a cloud of thoughts and feelings and aspirations? Dont I put out tentative mists here and there? Dont I occasionally appear to other people as a ridiculous shape of thoughts without my intending to? Dont I drift toward the north when I feel the breezes of love and the warmth of compassion? If clouds are beings, and beings are clouds, are we not allwell advised to drift, to feel the wind tucking us in here and plucking us out there? Are we such rock-hard bodily lumps as we imagine?Drift, let me. Sing to the sky, will I. One in many, are we. Let us breathe the breeze and find therein our roots in the spirit.

He and Mom raised six kids at a timewhen coal miners eamed as little as 25 cents a ton, and he loaded nine tonsa day. Even now, I m sure we don t know most of the sacrifices they madefor us.I remembered Dad s hard hat, its carbide lamp showing a fine pall of coaldust. Dad s graygreen eyes seemed large and wise as an owl sin his black-ened face. They often sparkled with devilment when theymet yours inconversation. .Each evening he came home, eager to take up his crosscut saw or clawhammer. Dad could chock a piece of walnut on his lathe and deffly tum outa beautiful salad bowl for Mom. He could build a cherry fold-top desk withfine, dovetailed drawers as easily as he could fashion a fishing-line threaderout of an old ballpoint pen.Dad bought our plain, two-story house from the coal company and immedi~ately began to remodel it. Our house was the first on the hill to have anindoor bathroom and hot water. He spent one summer digging out the clay-filled foundation to install a coal furnace. We children no longer shivered inour bed-rooms on cold winter mornings. We loved to watch him work. When Dad needed something, we ran to getit. If we called it a thingamabob he would say, That s a nail set (thetool for sinking the head of a nail below the surface of the wood). It has aname. Use it. Dad carried a spirit of craftsmanship into every job and expeaed the samefrom all six children. Each job had its claim on your best efforts. And evertool had its name. Those were his principles, and we lived by them just aSDad did.His playful spirit would set us to giggling-like the time he was buildingfireplace in the back yard. But their habitatwas disappearing, and now the birds needed nesting boxesDad listened as-I spoke, his hands gently moving a finegrained sand-paperover a piece of oak. I asked him if he would like to build a box. He said hewould think about it.Several weeks later he invited me into his workshop. There, on his workbench, sat three well-crafted bluebird nesting boxes. Think the birds willlike themThe asked. As much as I do, I replied, hugging him. Dad put up the boxes, and thenext spring bluebirds nested in his yard. He was hooked.Dad became quite an expert on the species. Bluebirds, he would say, areharbingers of hope and triumph, renowned for family loyalty.A pair willhave two or three broods a year, the earlier young sometimes helping to feedthe later nestlings. The presence of his children must have boosted Dad s spirits afterhis attackbecause he grew stronger and left the hospital on Valentine s Day WhenI visited my parents at the end of March, Dad was confined to the downstairs. But I noticed that he paused longer and longer at the windows facing theback yard. I knew what he was hoping to see. And one day a bright flash ofcolor circled the nesting box closest to our house.Well, it s about time the rascals showed, don t you think Dad said.Sporting a resplendent blue head, back, wings and tail, a male bluebird sanghis courtship song so passionately that we dubbed him Caruso, after theItalian tenor. A female appeared, but rejected the nesting box. Caruso foundanother in the field below the yard. He circled the new box, singing feverishly. She remained aloof on a distant perch.Dad was walking more and more each day as the love story unfolded. Icould see strength coming back into his wiry frame. One day Caruso battled a rival for the female s attentions. Then she foughtan even more vehement battle with another female. Afterward she resumedher haughty. stance while he fervently continued with his rapturous repertoire.Suddenly one exquisite morning, when the sky mirrored Caruso scourtingraiment, she flew back to the box nearest the house and inspected itthoroughly. Caruso hovered nearby and sang blissfully as she finally acceptedhim.Shortly thereafter she proceeded to lay one egg a day until there were six.Caruso fluttered outside, defending the nest while she incubated.Dad was now well enough to go outside, but he still couldn t reach the back-yard. He asked us to check inside the nesting box once a day. When we dreturn, the questions came. Is she on the nest he asked. Have the eggshatched Did you see that showboat what s-his-name Caruso, Dad, I replied. He has a name, you know. Dad s sly grin re:flected the devilment that had returned to his eyes. When the eggs hatched, we marveled at the herculean efforts Caruso andhis mate expended to capture insects for their brood. Nestlings must be fedevery 20 minutes.Near the end of May, the fledglings left the nest. By then Dad was able towalk to the fields beyond and see what other bluebird news there might be.Mom and I would watch him from the kitchen window. He gave some-thing to those bluebirds, she said quietly one day. Now they ve given itback.

Seven years ago, my wife and I had to take our five week old daughter off of life support, by far the hardest and most painful decision of our life. Our daughter, Alle Shea, was born with the rare bone disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta. At birth Alle Shea s skull looked like a cracked egg on the x-rays. She also had multiple fractures in her arms and her ribs, her legs, and her wrist. The day Alle was leaving us, we were able to take her outside on the hospital deck and hold her in our arms until she passed away.7年前,妻子和我给5周大的女儿停止了维持生命的治疗。
Now, we had two choices that day: we could have let the grief over take us, or we could take that grief and turn it into a positive. Since that day, my wife and I have worked tirelessly volunteering our time hosting special events, and talking to students and the media about OI. We even contacted hospitals to try to get them on board with our cause - and this is the battle we are still fighting. Over the seven years, we have volunteered thousands of hours. February of 2015 we started OI Care for You program. We send stuffed animals to children with OI in the hospital for treatment, surgery or home recovering from a break.

Calixta, at home, felt no uneasiness for their safety. She sat at a side window sewing furiously on a sewing machine. She was greatly occupied and did not notice the approaching storm. But she felt very warm and often stopped to mop her face on which the perspiration gathered in beads. She unfastened her white sacque at the throat. It began to grow dark, and suddenly realizing the situation she got up hurriedly and went about closing windows and doors.Out on the small front gallery she had hung Bobi nôt's Sunday clothes to dry and she hastened out to gather them before the rain fell. As she stepped outside, Alcée Laballière rode in at the gate. She had not seen him very often since her marriage, and never alone. She stood there with Bobinôt's coat in her hands, and the big rain drops began to fall. Alcée rode his horse under the shelter of a side projection where the chickens had huddled and there were plows and a harrow piled up in the corner."May I come and wait on your gallery till the storm is over, Calixta?" he asked.Come 'long in, M'sieur Alcée."His voice and her own startled her as if from a trance, and she seized Bobinôt's vest. Alcée, mounting to the porch, grabbed the trousers and snatched Bibi's braided jacket that was about to be carried away by a sudden gust of wind. He expressed an intention to remain outside, but it was soon apparent that he might as well have been out in the open: the water beat in upon the boards in driving sheets, and he went inside, closing the door after him. It was even necessary to put something beneath the door to keep the water out."My! what a rain! It's good two years sence it rain' like that," exclaimed Calixta as she rolled up a piece of bagging and Alcée helped her to thrust it beneath the crack. She was a little fuller of figure than five years before when she married; but she had lost nothing of her vivacity. Her blue eyes still retained their melting quality; and her yellow hair, dishevelled by the wind and rain, kinked more stubbornly than ever about her ears and temples. The rain beat upon the low, shingled roof with a force and clatter that threatened to break an entrance and deluge them there. They were in the dining room—the sitting room—the general utility room. Adjoining was her bed room, with Bibi's couch along side her own. The door stood open, and the room with its white, monumental bed, its closed shutters, looked dim and mysterious.Alcée flung himself into a rocker and Calixta nervously began to gather up from the floor the lengths of a cotton sheet which she had been sewing. lf this keeps up, Dieu sait if the levees goin' to stan it!" she exclaimed. "What have you got to do with the levees?""I got enough to do! An' there's Bobinôt with Bibi out in that storm—ifhe only didn' left Friedheimer's!""Let us hope, Calixta, that Bobinôt's got sense enough to come in out of a cyclone."She went and stood at the window with a greatly disturbed look on her face. She wiped the frame that was clouded with moisture. It was stiflingly hot. Alcée got up and joined her at the window, looking over her shoulder. The rain was coming down in sheets obscuring the view of far-off cabins and enveloping the distant wood in a gray mist. The playing of the lightning was incessant. A bolt struck a tall chinaberry tree at the edge of the field. It filled all visible space with a blinding glare and the crash seemed to invade the very boards they stood upon.Calixta put her hands to her eyes, and with a cry, staggered backward. Alcée's arm encircled her, and for an instant h e drew her close and spasmodically to him."Bonté!" she cried, releasing herself from his encircling arm and retreating from the window, the house'll go next! If I only knew w'ere Bibi was!" She would not compose herself; she would not be seated. Alcée clasped her shoulders and looked into her face. The contact of her warm, palpitating body when he had unthinkingly drawn her into his arms, had aroused all the old-time infatuation and desire for her flesh. "Calixta," he said, "don't be frightened. Nothing can happen. The house is too low to be struck, with so many tall trees standing about. There! aren't you going to be quiet? say, aren't you?" He pushed her hair back from her face that was warm and steaming. Her lips were as red and moist as pomegranate seed. Her white neck and a glimpse of her full, firm bosom disturbed him powerfully. As she glanced up at him the fear in her liquid blue eyes had given place to a drowsy gleam that unconsciously betrayed a sensuous desire. He looked down into her eyes and there was nothing for him to do but to gather her lips in a kiss. It reminded him of Assumption. "Do you remember—in Assumption, Calixta?" he asked in a low voice broken by passion. Oh! she remembered; for in Assumption he had kissed her and kissed and kissed her; until his senses would well nigh fail, and to save her he would resort to a desperate flight. If she was not an immaculate dove in those days, she was still inviolate; a passionate creature whose very defenselessness had made her defense, against which his honor forbade him to prevail. Now—well, now—her lips seemed in a manner free to be tasted, as well as her round, white throat and her whiter breasts. They did not heed the crashing torrents, and the roar of the elements made her laugh as she lay in his arms. She was a revelation in that dim, mysterious chamber; as white as the couch she lay upon. Her firm, elastic flesh that was knowing for the first time its birthright, was like a creamy lily that the sun invites to contribute its breath and perfume to the undying life of the world. The generous abundance of her passion, without guile or trickery, was likea white flame which penetrated and found response in depths of his own sensuous nature that had never yet been reached. When he touched her breasts they gave themselves up in quivering ecstasy, inviting his lips. Her mouth was a fountain of delight. And when he possessed her, they seemed to swoon together at the very borderland of life's mystery. He stayed cushioned upon her, breathless, dazed, enervated, with his heart beating like a hammer upon her. With one hand she clasped his head, her lips lightly touching his forehead. The other hand stroked with a soothing rhythm his muscular shoulders. The growl of the thunder was distant and passing away. The rain beat softly upon the shingles, inviting them to drowsiness and sleep. But they dared not yield.。

Fun is JohnBullls idea of humour, and there is no intellectualjudgment in fun. Everybody understands it be-cause it is practical. More than that, it unites allclasses and sweetens even political life. To studythe elemental form of English humour, you must look to the school-boy. It begins with the practical joke, and unless there is something of his natureabout it, it is never humour to an Englishman. Inan English household, fun is going all the time. The entire house resounds1 witn it. The father comes home and the whole family contribute to the amusement; puns, humorous uses of words, little things that are meaningless nonsense, if you like, fly round, and every one enjoys them thoroughly2 for just what they are. The Scotch3 are devoid4 ofthis trait, and the Americans seem to be, too.If I had the power to give humour to the nations I would not give them drollery5, for that isimpractical; I would not give them wit, for that isaristocratic, and many minds cannot grasp it;but Iwould be contented6 to deal out fun, which has nointellectual element, no subtlety7, belongs to oldand young, educated and uneducated alike, and isthe natural form of the humour of the Englishman.Let me tell you why the Englishman speaks only one language. He believes with the strongest conviction that his own tongue is the one that all people ought to speak and will come in time to speak, so what is the use of learning any other? He believes, too, that he is appointed by Providenceto be a governor of all the rest of the human race. From our Scottish standpoint we can never see an Englishman without thinking that there is oozing9 from every pore of his body the conviction that he belongs to a governing race. It has not been his de-sire that large portions of the world should be under his care, but as they have been thrust upon him in the proceedings10 of a wise PProvidence8, he must discharge his duty. This theory hasnt endeared him to others of his kind, but that isnt amatter that concerns him. He doesnt learn anyother language because he knows that he could speak it only so imperfectly that other people would laugh at him, and it would never do that a person of his importance in the scheme of the universe should be made the object of ridicule11.。

Whats the one thing that surprises you most about mankind? He answered: That they get bored of being children, are in a rush to grow up, and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money and then lose their money to restore their health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live neither for the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die, and they die as if they never had never lived...His hands took mine and we were silent. After a long period, I said, May I ask you another question? He replied with a smile. As a Father, what would you ask your children to do for the new year?To learn that they cannot make anyone love them. 英语散文篇一The colour of sky天空的颜色If we look at the sky on a perfectly fine summer‘s day we shall find that the blue colour is the most pure and intense overhead, and when looking high up in a direction opposite to the sun.
Near the horizon it is always less bright, while in the region immediately around the sun it is more or less yellow. The reason of this is that near the horizon we look through a very great thickness of the lower atmosphere, which is full of the larger dust particles reflecting white light, and this diluter(稀释剂) the pure blue of the higher atmosphere seen beyond, and in the vicinity(邻近,附近) of the sun a good deal of the blue light is reflected back into space by the finer dust, thus giving a yellowish tinge to that which reaches us reflected chiefly from the coarse dust of the lower atmosphere.

He would generously loan his younger brother his tapes and lecture him on the niceties of behaviour; without a word of objection, he would carry in wood for the stove. One day when I suggested that he might start on homework before dinner, John -- a veteran procrastinator said, Youre right. I guess I will.
When I mentioned this incident to one of his teachers and remarked that I didnt know what caused the changes, she said laughing. It must be his coat! Another teacher told him she was giving him a good mark not only because he had earned it but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran into a friend who had not seen our children in a long time, Could this be John? he asked, looking up to Johns new height, assessing the cut of his coat and extending his hand, one gentleman to another.
John and I both know we should never mistake a persons clothes for the real person within them. But there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see, for practising standards of excellence in though, speech, and behaviour, and for matching what is on the inside to what is on the outside.
Sometimes, watching John leave for school, Ive remembered with a keen sting what it felt like to be in the eighth grade -- a time when it was as easy to try on different approaches to life as it was to try on a coat. The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead, a vast panorama where all the doors are open. And if I were there right now, I would picture myself walking through those doors wearing my wonderful, magical coat.
The first thing that went through my mind was the well being of my soon-to-born daughter, Michael replied. Then, as I lay on the ground, remembered I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live. Werent you scared? Did you lose consciousness? I asked. Michael continued, ... the paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the operation room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, l read Hes a dead man. I knew I needed to take action. What did you do? I asked. Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me said Michael. She asked me if I was allergic to anything. Yes, I said. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, Gravity Over their laughter, I told them, Im choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.
Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I 1eamed from him that every day we have a choice to live fully.
