Regional Context : Suzhou Local Context : Suzhou New District Technology City Masterplan Suzhou, located in the Jiangsu Province, is approximately 100km to the west of Shanghai, adjacent to the east of Taihu Lake and seated on the hinterland of the Yantze River Delta. The total area of Suzhou is 8,488Km², with a total population 5.74 million. The urban area is 178Km² and is inhabited by approximately 850,000 people.

The Gao Xin district, located in Suzhou China, will be enhanced by the creation of a core open space system that connects, integrates and enhances a developing infrastructure of roadways, engineered ecological corridors, residential, commercial and light industrial land uses. This open space system takes

2 into account the spatial quality of the existing landforms with the flatness of the fish farms and leveled areas primed for development. The efforts made during the masterplanning stage were significant and essentially created the framework for which this proposal is based on. Masterplan ideas such as gateways along Taihu and a strong north-south connection between Nobel lake and Wulongshan were maintained. The basic approach for building areas were also considered along with the respective building setbacks, FAR, height limits and uses. This proposal seeks to carry out the initial goals set out by the masterplan and further the effort with more detailed site planning and landscape architecture.

Every effort was made to adhere to the original masterplan document. Our approach to this project begins with a unique understanding of the site based on a landscape sensibility. Meaning, we inventory all of the natural features and place a value on them to determine how they can be integrated into the future land use. Values can vary from ecological value to recreation potential and, based on the architectural programming, can have a strong tie to the physical design and layout of a building. If we assume that the Taihu Road construction and the surrounding local roads is a given, then we can evaluate what is currently left over- the open space. • The largest and tallest landform considered for this study is Wulongshan (+120.3) and to a

lesser degree, Qingshan. These two landforms form the southern boundary of this proposal and

have been recent sites for stone quarry activities. The potential of these areas for recreation and

educational uses is high. Care should be taken to integrate these features into the final design.

本研究最高大的地形特征是乌龙山(+120.3),其次是青山。这两个地形是本研究的南界,近来

有采石活动。这里用于娱乐和教育的可能性较高。应考虑将这些特征整合到最后设计之中。

• The existing waterways on the site (scope area) create a web that crisscrosses over new and proposed

roads and proposed building areas. Consideration of the future water levels and expected flood conditions

are critical to maintaining a long-term strategy for storm water and its effects on development.

• The existing fish farms located in the northern area of the site are typical for this area. Thought

should be given as to how these cultural interventions can be integrated into the future development.
