Name谭发彩Student NO:2013121313I have finished reading Sons and Lovers written by English writer D. H. Lawrence in 1913 in 4 weeks from June 1st. to July 1st. This book is on the list of the 100 best novels of the 20th century. Although this book was controversial and suffered prohibition after it was first published, it is regarded as a masterpiece by many critics and is often regarded as Lawrence's finest achievement. Lawrence wrote this book based on his own experience. His father was a miner who always got drunk. So his mother put all her love on her son, as a result, Lawrence couldn’t love girls as a normal man. This book depicts the imbalanced gender relationship after the industrial revolution in Britain in nineteenth century.Mr. Morel and Mrs. Morel meet at a party and falls in love with each other soon. But after they get married, the conflicts between them becomes more and more serious. Mrs. Morel loves her husband no more after they have gotten married for one year and shifts her love to her sons. Her elder son, William resists his father as her mother does and hates him being rude to his mother. He is so attached to his mother. Eventually, he leaves their home for a job in London, where he begins to rise up into the middle class. He dies and Mrs. Morel is heartbroken, but when Paul catches pneumonia she rediscovers her love for her second son. Paul is afraid to leave his mother but wants to go out on his own, and needs to experience love. Gradually, he falls in love with Miriam, a farmer's daughter who attends his church. Paul meets Clara Dawes at Miriam's family's farm. Clara is feminist who is separated with her husband. Paul breaks up with Miriam after he fails to press her to physical love. He is attracted by Clara who is more passionate physically soon. But he still can not get away from his mother’s influence. At last, he also break up with Clara. He feels confused and lonely after his mother died.I am really unwilling to read this book at first , but after I finished reading the first two chapter, I was so involved in this book. Lawrence is good at depicting the characters of the roles in his book. Mrs. Morel treat her sons as her lovers after she is desperate with her husband. She loves her elder son deeply at first .After he died, she shifts her love to her second son Paul. Paul feels that he is unable to get way from his mother’s love. As a conse quence, he breaks up with Miriam to whom he can open his mind. This kind of love of Mrs. Morel to his sons makes her family a tragedy. It does no good to anyone of her family. Her husband feels lon ely for her and children’s indifference. So he choose to drink with his workmates everyday, and this makes his temper worse than before. In my view, he is a poor man who can not get care and respect from the family. He is separated from the whole family. There is no respect between him and his wife, not to say love. I feel so depressed when Mrs. Morel no longer loves her husband anymore. I am just wondering that how they bare the life without love and care. They both fail in their marriage because they both don’t know how to make each other happy. As Qian Zhongsh u says, “Marriage just like a wall, people outside wants to run into it, people inside want to run out of it.” Love between girl and young boy is passion. As the passion fades out, there comes the conflict. If the conflict hasn’t been solved, themarriage will break up;Couples should learn how to contribute for the family and how to devote for each other, only in this was can the family be a happy family.Mrs. Morel also suffers a lot from her marriage, she gets married with Mr. Morel before she knows him well. She is doomed to endure the hardship in her life for her carelessness in choosing her husband. She shifts her love from her husband to her sons to make up for the vacant in her mind. Thus her sons grow to be so attached to her in spirit. William and Paul are unable to love independently. It’s not uncommon that many boys are trapped in Oedipus complex. A man’s life goal should be getting rid of mother’s love, making peace with his father, and then falling in love with a girl who is different from his mother. After that, he will be a real man. However, nowadays mothers tend to spoil their only son. Some of them even put all of their time and energy into their sons, those boys are very attached to their mother. Getting away from their mother’s care and love is so hard, they couldn’t treat their wife in a right way. So there always exists strained relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law due to mother’s deep love to son.As a matter of fact, the basic reason of the unbalanced gender relationship was the social environment after the industrial revolution. It was common in Britain at that time. This was the reason why the author entitled the book as Sons and Lovers. Lawrence criticizes the social environment through depicting a tragedy of one family. This book makes me think about what makes a happy family. Firstly, love between a couple decides whether they will devote for each other; Secondly, relationship between wife and husband will not be healthy if their marriage lack respect. Last but not least, the social environment plays a very important role in making a happy family.。

The novel is told from Holden's perspective as he recounts his experiences after being expelled from an elite prep school.Holden's narration is honest, raw and often filled with sarcasm. This concept, combined with Holden's cynical attitude, makes the story relatable to many readers, especially young adults. The novel takes place over a few days in New York City as Holden tries to find meaning and purpose in his life. He encounters several characters along the way, each adding depth to the story and shedding light on Holden's inner turmoil. Book Report——Robinson CrusoeI already have known the Life and Surprising Adventure of Robinson Crusoe ( Robinson Crusoe ) in my textbook when I was in the senior high school. The main lesson that chapter in the book is to tell us the importance of learning to make friends. But now, I want to share you with my reviews about the character Robinson Crusoe. The author Daniel Defoe (1660 – 24 April 1731), born Daniel Foe, was an English writer, journalist, and pamphleteer, who gained enduring fame for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularize the form in Britain, and is even referred to by some as one of the founders of the English novel. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote more than five hundred books, pamphlets, and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural). He was also a pioneer of economic journalism.Robinson Crusoe tells of a man's shipwreck on a deserted island and his subsequent adventures. The author based part of his narrative on the story of the Scottish castaway Alexander Selkirk, who spent four years stranded on the island. Crusoe sets sail from the Queen's Dock in Hull on a sea voyage in August 1651, against the wishes of his parents, who want him to pursue a career, possibly in law. After a tumultuous journey where his ship is wrecked in a storm, his lust for the sea remains so strong that he sets out to sea again. This journey, too, ends in disaster as the ship is taken over by Salépirates and Crusoe is enslaved by a Moor. Two years later, he escapes in a boat with a boy named Xury; a Captain of a Portuguese ship off the west coast of Africa rescues him. The ship is en route to Brazil. With the captain's help, Crusoe procures a plantation.Years later, Crusoe joins an expedition to bring slaves from Africa but he is shipwrecked in a storm about forty miles out to sea on an island. Overcoming his despair, he fetches arms, tools, and other supplies from the ship before it breaks apart and sinks. He builds a fenced-in habitat near a cave which he excavates. By making marks in a wooden cross, he creates a calendar. By using tools salvaged from the ship, and ones he makes himself, he hunts, grows barley and rice, dries grapes to make raisins, learns to make pottery, and raises goats. He reads the Bible and becomes religious, thanking God for his fate in which nothing is missing but human society.Only after I had read the whole original book did I fully understand the character. Robinson Crusoe is not only a role in the book, but also likes a real man around my life. Thanks to Defoe’s realistic writingstyle that I can grasp the details of his life. Robinson Crusoe’s adventurous life appeals me very much and there are many things we have in common. For instance, he goes to voyage against his parents’s wishes. Just at the same age, I also have the feeling want to see the world outside instead of following what our parents tell me to do. I think the spirit of venturing has a universal appeal among youngsters whatever the time is. The early stage of Robinson Crusoe’s life reflects his determination and courage. In my eyes, he is a hero that can guide me and encourage me to do what I am really interested in.Another example is that Robinson Crusoe is willing to make use of anything he fetches during the time when the ship was damaged by the storm. He is positive and strong enough to face the difficulties. Although there’s nobody in the deserted island, he is not disappointed. He overcomes the misery rather than cowers backwards. I am a college student now, I also need to be ready to encounter the pressure of study and work in the future. Most importantly, what I admired is Crusoe’s ability to supply what he had already learned into practice. It seems that I don’t get adequate chances to put what I have learned into practice, but it is necessary for me to prepare well for the future. Life is fulls of risks, we have to be brave to accept them. In my opinion, Robinson Crusoe is a practitioner of theory who combines reality and knowledge together. Finally, I regard Crusoe as a hero as well as a representative of the emerging capitalist class. Not satisfying with the current situation and wanting to pursue the further goal is the time spirit of the Britain in the 18th century. During the late life of Robinson Crusoe, he builds a colony in the island somewhere like civilized society. He is a pioneer, a leader, and a conqueror all the time that initiates the trend of exploring and venturing. “All these things, with some very surprising incidents in some new adventures of my own, for ten years more, I may perhaps give a farther account of hereafter”1--this is the last sentence of the book which makes me ponder. I still have a fancy to read the sequent story of Robinson Crusoe. Anyway, Robinson Crusoe is a friend that shows me the wonderful adventurous world and there’s always a position for him in my heart.Note:1. Robinson Crusoe, p343Reference: Daniel Defoe . A Book Report of a Thousand Splendid SunsWenjing Shi Translation 152 1507042034Brief IntroductionA Thousand Splendid Suns is a 2007 novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini. It is his second, following his bestselling 2003 debut, The Kite Runner. Mariam is an illegitimate child, and suffers from both the stigma surrounding her birth along with the abuse she faces throughout her marriage. Laila, born a generation later, is comparatively privileged during her youth until their lives intersect and she is also forced to accept a marriage proposal from Rasheed, Mariam's husband. The author Hosseini has remarked that he regards the novel as a "mother-daughter story" in contrast to The Kite Runner, which he considers a "father-son story".It continues some of the themes used in his previous work, such as the familial aspects, but focuses primarily on female characters and their roles in Afghan society. The Author &BackgroundKhaled Hosseini ( born March 4, 1965) is an Afghan-born American novelist and physician. After graduating from college, he worked as a doctor in California, an occupation that he likened to "an arranged marriage". He has published three novels, most notably his 2003 debut The Kite Runner, all of which are at least partially set in Afghanistan and feature an Afghan as the protagonist. Following the success of The Kite Runner he retired from medicine to write full-time. Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. His father worked as a diplomat, and when Hosseini was 11 years old, the family moved to France; four years later, they applied for asylum in the United States, where he later became a citizen. Hosseini did notreturn to Afghanistan until 2001 at the age of 36, where he "felt like a tourist in his own country".Hosseini visited Afghanistan in 2003, and "heard so many stories about what happened to women, the tragedies that they had endured, the difficulties, the gender-based violence that they had suffered, the discrimination, the being barred from active life during the Taliban, having their movement restricted, being banned essentially from practicing their legal, social rights, political rights".This motivated him to write a novel centered on two Afghan women.TitleThe title of the book comes from a line in the Josephine Davis translation of the poem "Kabul", by the 17th-century Iranian poet Saib Tabrizi:"Every street of Kabul is enthralling to the eyeThrough the bazaars, caravans of Egypt passOne could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofsAnd the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls"In an interview, Khaled Hosseini explains, "I was searching for English translations of poems about Kabul, for use in a scene where a character bemoans leaving his beloved city, when I found this particular verse. I realized that I had found not only the right line for the scene, but also an evocative title in the phrase 'a thousand splendid suns,' which appears in the next-to-last stanza."SummaryThe novel centers around two women, Mariam and Laila, how their lives become intertwined after a series of drastic events, and their subsequent friendship and support for each other in the backdrop of Kabul in the 20th and 21st century. It is splitinto four parts that focus on individual stories: Part one is about Mariam, part two is on Laila, part three is on the relationship between the two women, and Laila's life with Tariq is in part four. The last section also happens to be the only part written in the present tense.Mariam lives in a kolba on the outskirts of Herat with her embittered mother. Jalil, her father, is a wealthy businessman who owns a cinema and lives in the town with three wives and nine children. Mariam is his illegitimate daughter, and she is prohibited to live with them, but Jalil visits her every Thursday. On her fifteenth birthday, Mariam wants her father to take her to see Pinocchio at his movie theater, against the pleas of her mother. When he does not show up, she hikes into town and goes to his house. He refuses to see her, and she ends up sleeping on the street. In the morning, Mariam returns home to find that her mother has committed suicide out of fear that her daughter had deserted her. Mariam is then taken to live in her father's house. Jalil arranges for her to be married to Rasheed, a shoemaker from Kabul who isthirty-years her senior. In Kabul, Mariam becomes pregnant seven successive times, but is never able to carry a child to term. This is a sad, disquieting reality for both Rasheed and Mariam. Ultimately Rasheed grows more and more despondent over his wife's inability to have a child and particularly a son. As their marriage wears on Rasheed gradually becomes more and more abusive.Part Two introduces Laila. She is a girl growing up in Kabul who is close friends with Tariq, a boy living in her neighborhood. They eventually develop a romantic relationship despite being aware of the social boundaries between men and women in Afghan society. War comes to Afghanistan, and Kabul is bombarded by rocket attacks. Tariq's family decides to leave the city, and the emotional farewell between Laila and Tariq culminates with them making love. Laila's family also decides to leave Kabul, but as they are packing a rocket destroys the house, killing her parents and severely injuring Laila. Laila is subsequently taken in by Rasheed and Mariam. After recovering from her injuries, Laila discovers that she is pregnant with Tariq's child. After being informed by Abdul Sharif that Tariq has died, she agrees to marry Rasheed, a man eager to have a young and attractive second wife in hopes of having a son with her. When Laila gives birth to a daughter, Aziza, Rasheed is displeased and suspicious. This results in him becoming abusive towards Laila. Mariam and Laila eventually become confidants and best friends. They plan to run away from Rasheed and leave Kabul but are caught at the bus station. Rasheed beats them and deprives them of water for several days, almost killing Aziza.A few years later, Laila gives birth to Zalmai, Rasheed's son. The Taliban has risen to power and imposed harsh rules on the Afghan population, prohibiting women from appearing in public without a male relative. There is a drought, and living conditions in Kabul become poor. Rasheed's workshop burns down, and he is forced to take jobs for which he is ill-suited. He sends Aziza to an orphanage. Laila endures a number of beatings from the Taliban when caught alone on the streets in attempts to visit her daughter. Then one day Tariq appears outside the house, and he and Laila are reunited. Laila realizes that Rasheed had hired Abdul Sharif to inform her about Tariq's fake death, so that he could marry her. When Rasheed returns home from work, Zalmai tells his father about the visitor. Rasheed starts to savagely beat Laila. He nearly strangles her, but Mariam intervenes and kills Rasheed with a shovel. Afterwards, Mariam confesses to killing Rasheed in order to draw attention away from Laila and Tariq. Mariam is publicly executed, allowing Laila and Tariq to leave for Pakistan with Aziza and Zalmai. They spend their days working at a guest house in Murree, a summer retreat. After the fall of the Taliban, Laila and Tariq return to Afghanistan. They stop in the village where Mariam was raised, and discover a package that Mariam's father left behind for her: a videotape of Pinocchio, a small sack of money, and a letter. Laila reads the letter and discovers that Jalil had regretted sending Mariam away. Laila andTariq return to Kabul and use the money to fix up the orphanage, where Laila starts working as a teacher. Laila is pregnant with her third child, and if it is a girl, Laila has already named her Mariam.CommentsAfter reading the novel,I am deeply touched and shocked.I am touched by the patience and suffering of Mariam and the friendship between Mariam and Laila.I am shocked by the violence and abuse of Rasheed. It is a beautiful, heart-wrenching story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely bond and an indestructible love. Although Mariam and Laila suffer many pains, yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism. In the end it is love that triumphs over death and destruction.Love may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you consider the war-ravaged landscape of Afghanistan. But that is the emotion—subterranean, powerful, beautiful, illicit, and infinitely patient—that suffuses the pages of Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns. As in his best-selling first novel,The Kite Runner, Hosseini movingly examines the connections between unlikely friends, the fissures that open up between parents and children, the intransigence of quiet hearts. Nowadays, there are still many wars in this land threatening the lives of the people stay there. And I wonder how will these Afghan women do, and more important, what can WE do.Style &TechniqueA Thousand Splendid Suns received significant praise from reviewers, with Publishers Weekly calling it "a powerful, harrowing depiction of Afghanistan"and USA Today describing the prose as "achingly beautiful".Lisa See of The New York Times attributed the book's success to Hosseini "understanding the power of emotion as few other popular writers do".Natasha Walter from The Guardian wrote, "Hosseini is skilled at telling a certain kind of story, in which events that may seem unbearable - violence, misery and abuse - are made readable. He doesn't gloss over the horrors his characters live through, but something about his direct, explanatory style and the sense that you are moving towards a redemptive ending makes the whole narrative, for all its tragedies, slip down rather easily."。

Book ReportName:Uncle Tom’s CabinAuthor: Harriet Beecher S toweHarriet Beecher Stowe (June 14, 1811 –July 1, 1896), the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, was a female writer in American history. She was born into a respectable family in 1811. Her father was a famous American divine who worshiped and feared God very much. She had two brothers and an older sister. As for Harriet’ career, firstly, she worked for her sister in Western Female Institute. Later, she changed her idea and converted her lifelong interest into writing into magazine stories. She got married in 1836 and bore seven children in all.She is a anti-slavery writer and brought up in a orthodox Calvinism family. She was one of the first local coloristic writers, Being sentimentally attached to the past, in her works , there’s lots of descriptions about the life of the period of Puritanism.Short SummaryTom’s master, Shelby, had lost a lot of money in the stock market failure. in order to debt repayment, decided to sell two slaves--Uncle Tom, Shelby's loyal servant since childhood, and five-year-old Harry, a beautiful and talented child who sings, dances and mimes. Shelby regrets taking the child away from his mother, Eliza, as much as he regrets betraying Uncle Tom's faithfulness. Eliza overhears Mrs. Shelby, a very religious woman, protesting her husband's decision, and decides to flee the plantation with her son. George, her husband from a neighboring plantation, has already left for Canada ,a secret network of people who usher runaway slaves to freedom in the North. Eliza plans to do the same, and tries to convince Uncle Tom to save himself and come with her. Uncle Tom, however, must remain loyal to his master, despite his betrayal and the risk of death at the cruel hands of a new master, and does not accompany Eliza on her journey to the Ohio River.Haley searches for Eliza in vain, for she is spurred on by fear of losing her child and reaches the river quickly. Amazingly, Eliza crosses the river by jumping from one ice flow to the next. Upon reaching the shore in Ohio, Mr. Symmes, a man who has observed her brave feat, listens to her story. Fortunately, Symmes hates slave traders and thus takes Eliza and Harry to the house of Senator Bird, where they receive food and lodging. Ironically, Bird has just voted for a bill banning aid to slaves who tried to flee, but the Senator is very moved by Eliza's story. He thus changes his convictions and takes the runaways to a Quaker settlement, where they stay with the Halliday family. Coincidentally, Eliza's husband George has sought shelter in this very community, and the young family is reunited. The Quakers help the family board a ship for Canada before Haley's hired slave hunters, Loker and Marks, can capture them. After the hunt for Eliza and Harry fails, Haley returns to Shelby's to collect the other half of his purchase, Uncle Tom. The slaves at the plantation are very sad but Tom remains calm and tries to read his Bible for comfort. On the steamboat to New Orleans, where Tom is to be sold, Tom befriends an angelic little girl, "Little Eva" St. Clare. Uncle Tom saves the five-year-old beauty from drowning, and she convinces her father to buyTom for her own family. Tom finds life on the St. Clare plantation agreeable, for although he is head coachman he spends most of his time with Little Eva. The love and goodness of which she constantly speaks influences those around her, convincing people of their inner value and that of the people around them. Eva even manages to convince the naughty slave girl Topsy that she deserves to be loved, and touches the heart of her stern aunt, Miss Ophelia, who has traveled from Vermont to manage the plantation because Mrs. St. Clare is a hypochondriac.Tom's contentment does not last, however, because Eva soon falls ill. Dying, she asks that all the slaves surround her bedside, where she gives each of them a golden lock of hair and tells them they must Christian so that they can see each other in heaven. Eva persuades Mr. St. Clare to free Tom after her death. Mr. St. Clare is so upset by her death, that he never legally frees Tom before he himself is killed trying to mediate a barroom fight . Mrs. St. Clare sells the slaves to settle her husband's debts, and the cruel Simon Legree purchases Tom. Legree is a drunkard who beats his slaves cruelly. Only one of his slaves, Cassy, disobey her master by threatening to do voodoo on him. Cassy tries to help Uncle Tom, but he will not resist the terrible beatings Legree inflicts upon him.Mr. Shelby, in the meantime, has been tracking Tom down, and arrives at the Legree plantation one day. By this time, however, Tom is very near death because his master thinks he helped another two slaves flee. Once Tom is dead and buried, Shelby takes a steamboat to Kentucky, where he meets Cassy and another slave from Legree's, Emmeline, who are fleeing the plantation. The three then meet Emily de Thoux, who is George Harris's sister, and discover that Cassy is the mother of Eliza. Once in Kentucky, Shelby frees his slaves. Cassy, Emmeline, and Emily travel to Canada where they are reunited with Eliza and George. The Harris family and Cassy eventually travel to Liberia to found a freedom colony for ex-slaves. The novel ends with a chapter summarizing the lesson learned from these "sketches" of experiences with slavery: that slavery is indeed a very cruel and evil institution that should be abolished.Main Character:Tom, an old slave and the main character of the novel, Tom's two most common qualities were his natural goodness and piety. He was a passive Christ-figure who consistently forgiven the wrongs committed against him and turned to God in times of crisis. From learning to read the Bible and write letters to his kin, Tom was consistently trying to improve himself despite the limits placed upon him by slavery. Tom also served as a Christian leader for the other slaves in the novel. He knew Eliza would escape and he was for her escaping. He had formed the habit of obeying his master when he was very young. So, even when he knew he was to be sold to New Orleans, he accepted the fact. He was loyal to his master; he would like to do everything his master asked him to do. He was really a very good person, who loved God and every person of the world .He was a devout Christian .He was so devout in Christian that he didn't unobey to the slave owner although he was ill-treated so much .In the end, as a result of the cruel maltreating from his master, he died, which made me very sad. Such a good and honest black man died so tragically! That was really sad! On the other hand, law at that time was to blame. T om formed the habit of obeying his master’s orders just because the law was unfair to theblacks. But, fortunately, it was his death that irritated the blacks. And the blacks began to fight against their masters and for their freedom.Another image is Evangeline St. Clare, namely, the "little Eva". The name "Evangeline" definitely promotes the idea and image of angel. In appearance, she resembles an earthly angel-beautiful, always dressed in white. In spirit, she is full of love, like a good guardian angel. The reason she asks her Papa to buy Tom is "to make him happy" . When she hears the story of Prue, she doesn't want to go out in her new carriage again for the terrible story "sink(s) into her heart" . In her eyes, there are many puzzling things, such as why Prue is so unhappy, why Tom should be separated from his wife and children, why no one loves that black little girl, Topsy. What she only knows and does is to love all the people around her. She shares the Gospel with all her father's plantation slaves as well as questioning her own father's faith. This action by Eva saves many lost souls and gives them hope. It also prompts the soul-searching and self-reevaluation in her father. When dying, she gives every slave servant in her house a lock of fair golden hair, asking him or her to be Christians, so that they could see each other in heaven. Eva is delicate and dies early, which "dramatize the fact that she does not belong to the world. This is especially evident when the angel is a child, like Stowe's Eva."Eliza. though Eliza was very content at the Shelby plantation. She did not miss or question her lack of personal autonomy under the master-slave relationship, but rather was grateful for masters who had instilled in her Christian ways. But when she knew that her son was to be sold, she became a brave woman. She dared to fight for her freedom. When she knew that her child was to be sold to a cruel slaver, she decided to escape, no matter what difficulties she would face. She just headed, without hesitation. It is a miracle for her to cross the Ohio River.Eliza is brave because she still has to endure many pains after her crossing of the Ohio River. While after crossing the lake, Canada, the land of freedom, waits for her and her families. Her love to her child overcome her fear to the slaver. Her love was so deep that she could even pay her life to save her child. What a brave woman! What a great mother and wife!In fact, all the characters in Uncle Tom's Cabin can be put into four categories: perfect Christians, imperfect Christians, half-Christians and non-Christians. Tom and Eva are those rare real Christians or perfect Christians who really live up to the principles of the Bible. Imperfect Christians include those like Mrs. Shelby and Miss Ophelia etc. They believe God, but their selfishness or hypocrisy prevents them from being good Christians. For example, Mrs. Shelby rationalizes her actions by "gild(ing) it over" with "kindness and care" (P.33). She is angry about her husband's sale of Tom an't know how she can ever hold up her head again among them (P.32). Miss Ophelia, though has missionary zeal, dares not to tough Topsy, the slave girl she is reforming for she still has the sense of white superiority at the bottom of her heart. There are also some half-Christians or going-to-be Christians, such as St. Clare and Gorge Harris. St. Clare is always doubt towards religion and doesn't believe God until his daughters and his own deaths. Harris is anot her example. He is rebellious at first, but when his family reunion comes to a reality, he becomes more content and comes nearer to God. While Simon Legree is a typical example of non-Christian whose tough nature refuse to be touched by any good word. He doesn't repent even at his last minute. This kind of categorizing might be oversimplifying.Yet, this is a pattern that I found in Uncle Tom's Cabin. So in this sense, Uncle Tom's Cabin is a book soaked with spirit of Christianity. My Understanding"Uncle Tom's Cabin" there is a description of a true story. In the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" before, I absolutely can not think all the world was there such a cold-blooded, cowardly and brutal, this treatment has been a living! And a group of their own people as human, this should be on an equal footing and his group of people, has become a slave to obey his master, to them, this is not fair, why their lives out in the end we should, as a dog the same man! His master who have thought about the feelings of their slaves? At that time the world is really unfair and dark! After reading "Uncle Tom's Cabin", Actually, the two characters of this novel are worth appreciation. I like both of them. Happiness and sadness, beauty and ugliness are all shown well in this book; I was deeply moved by it. Apart from cruelty of the slaver, there was much love in this book, love of the mother, love between couples, love to people, love to country, love to the world, and love to God I deeply feel we should respect and love everyone in the world ,everyone isequal.Otherwise the world will become a cold cruel world,we will suffer a lot!.。

八年级英语读书报告Book Report: The Giver by Lois LowrySummary:The Giver by Lois Lowry is a dystopian novel set in a society where all aspects of life are tightly controlled. The protagonist, Jonas, is a young boy who is chosen to be the Receiver of Memories, a role that requires him to absorb all the emotions, memories, and history of the society. As Jonas learns more about the reality of his world, he begins to challenge the conformity and control that governs his society.Analysis:The Giver is a thought-provoking novel that raises important questions about freedom, individuality, and the cost of a utopian society. It challenges readers to consider the consequences of living in a world devoid of pain and emotion, and to reflect on the true meaning of humanity. The book does an excellent job of portraying the conflict between conformity and individuality, and it also addresses the power dynamics that exist within a society. It prompts readers to think critically about their own beliefs and the world around them.Personal Reflection:I found The Giver to be a compelling and engaging read. It was thought-provoking and made me consider the importance of individuality and human experience. The story was both gripping and emotionally resonant, and it left a lasting impact on me.I would highly recommend The Giver to other readers, especially those who enjoy dystopian literature and thought-provoking themes. It is a book that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it.。

It is his second, following his 2003 debut,. The author Hosseini has remarked that he regards the novel as a "mother-daughter story" in contrast to?The Kite Runner, whichhe considers a "father-son story".It continues some of the themes used in his previous work, such as the familial aspects, but focuses primarily on female characters and their roles in Afghan society. The Author & BackgroundKhaled Hosseini(born March 4, 1965) is an Afghan-born Americanand. After graduating from college, he worked as a doctor in California, an occupation that he likened to "an arrangedmarriage".He has published three novels, most notably his 2003 debut, all of which are at least partially set in Afghanistan and feature an Afghan as the protagonist. Following the success of?The Kite Runner he retired from medicine to write full-time. Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. His father worked as a diplomat, and when Hosseini was 11 years old, the family moved to France; four years later, they applied for asylum in the United States, where he later became a citizen. Hosseini did not return to Afghanistan until 2001 at the age of 36, where he "felt like a tourist in his own country".Hosseini visited Afghanistan in 2003, and "heard so many stories about what happened to women, the tragedies that they had endured, the difficulties, the gender-based violence that they had suffered, the discrimination, the being barred from active life during the Taliban, having their movement restricted, being banned essentially from practicing their legal, social rights, political rights".This motivated him to write a novel centered on two Afghan women.TitleThe title of the book comes from a line in the Josephine Davis translation of the poem "Kabul",by the 17th-century Iranian poet:"Every street of Kabul is enthralling to the eyeThrough the bazaars, caravans of Egypt passOne could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofsAnd the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls"In an interview, Khaled Hosseini explains, "I was searching for English translations of poems about Kabul, for use in a scene where a character bemoans leaving his beloved city, when I found this particular verse. The last section also happens to be the only part written in the present tense.Mariam lives in a?on the outskirts ofwith her embittered mother. Jalil, her father, is a wealthy businessman who owns a cinema and lives in the town with three wives and nine children.Mariam is his illegitimate daughter, and she is prohibited tolive with them, but Jalil visits her every Thursday. On her fifteenth birthday, Mariam wants her father to take her toseeat his movie theater, against the pleas of her mother. Whenhe does not show up, she hikes into town and goes to his house. He refuses to see her, and she ends up sleeping on the street. In the morning, Mariam returns home to find that her mother has committed suicide out of fear that her daughter had deserted her. Mariam is then taken to live in her father's house. Jalil arranges for her to be married to Rasheed, a shoemaker fromwhois thirty-years her senior. She is a girl growing up in Kabulwho is close friends with Tariq, a boy living in herneighborhood. Lailais subsequently taken in by Rasheed and Mariam. The?has risen to power and imposed harsh rules on the Afghan population, prohibiting women from appearing in public without a male relative. Laila realizes that Rasheed had hired AbdulSharif to inform her about Tariq's fake death, so that he could marry her. They stop in the village where Mariam was raised, and discover a package that Mariam's father left behind for her: a videotape of?Pinocchio, a small sack of money, and a letter. Laila reads the letter and discovers that Jalil had regretted sending Mariam away. Laila and Tariq return to Kabul and usethe money to fix up the orphanage, where Laila starts workingas a teacher. But that isthe emotion—subterranean, powerful, beautiful, illicit, and infinitely patient—that suffuses the pages of Khaled Hosseini's?A Thousand Splendid Suns. As in his best-selling first novel,The Kite Runner, Hosseini movingly examines the connections between unlikely friends, the fissures that open up between parents and children, the intransigence of quiet hearts. Nowadays, there are still many wars in this land threatening the lives of the people stay there. And I wonder how will these Afghan women do, and more important, what can WE do.Style & TechniqueA Thousand Splendid Suns received significant praise from reviewers, withcalling it "a powerful, harrowing depiction of Afghanistan"and describing the prose as "achingly beautiful". Lisa See of?The New York Times attributed the book's success to Hosseini "understanding the power of emotion as few other popular writers do".fromwrote, "Hosseini is skilled at telling a certain kind of story, in which events that may seem unbearable - violence, misery and abuse - are made readable. He doesn't gloss over the horrors his characters live through, but something about his direct, explanatory style and the sense that you are movingtowards a redemptive ending makes the whole narrative, for all its tragedies, slip down rather easily."。

跨文化交际读书报告学院: 外国语学院班级: 07级本科2班学号: *****************时间: 2010-5-21Book reportJourney to the West 西游记Wu Cheng−en【明】吴承恩Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literatures. Originally, published anonymously in the 1590s during the Ming Dynasty. It is a Chinese mythological novel. It was written during the Ming Dynasty based on traditional folktales. Consisting of 100 chapters, this fantasy relates the adventures of a Tang Dynasty (618-907) priest Sanzang and his three disciples, Monkey, Pig and Friar Sand, as they travel west in search of Buddhist Sutra. The first seven chapters recount the birth of the Monkey King and his rebellion against Heaven. Then in chapter eight to twelve, we learn how Sanzang was born and why he is searching for the scriptures, as well as his preparation for the journey. As we known, this book is widespread in china, even in the whole world. The book has been adapted so many times for film and television. The most famous Chinese live action TV series is produced by CCTV in 1986, starring Liu Xiao Ling Tong as Sun Wu Kong, and directed by Y ang Jie. It follows the original storyline faithfully and is widely regarded as a classic. I have seen this one more than ten times, but I read this book a month ago. What make me feel surprised is that book has more deeply impressments on me than the TV series. Because some of the characters in the book were removed or altered in the screenplay, and the movie couldn‟t totally express the author‟s thoughts and mixed with the director or other people‟s ideas more or less.In this book, my favorite character is monkey king who is the first hero in most Chinese children heart .He is born from a rock on the summit of Flower Fruit Mountain and goes on to become the king of the monkeys. 300 years later, he learns the way of immortality and various other powerful magical skills from an immortal far away from his home. However, Wu Kong is captured and rushes Wu Kong underneath the Mountain of Five Elements by Buddha after a series of events, which includes Wu Kong defeating the Heavenly warriors sent to capture him and waving a terrible war between Heaven and Flower Fruit Mountain. 500 years later, Tang San Zang rescues Sun Wu Kong from the mountain. They meet Zhu Ba Jie and Sha Wu Jing later who become San Zang's disciples. They start on the pilgrimage to the Western Heavens together. At first, he is defiant and bold just because he is powerful, and he knows that noone can defeat him. He has mastered seventy-two methods of transformations and can also do a jīndǒuyún ("cloud somersault").At the Mountains of Flowers and Fruits, he dare to defeat an army of 100,000 celestial soldiers, led by the Four Heavenly Kings, Erlang Shen, and Nezha.he has never thought that he may be defeated and wants to place the Heavenly Emperor. Wu Kong is afraid of nothing. There is no doubt that Wu Kong‟s most prominent personality trait is bravery and fearlessness.Later, another interesting aspect of his personality is the development of his relationship with Tang San Zang. Before meeting Tang San Zang,Wu Kong goes around killing off humans for no reason at all and does things freely. So Guānyīn teaches San Zang to chant the Tightening-Crown spell whenever he needs to chastise Wu Kong. Finally Wu Kong is tortured into obedience to San Zang. But, strangely, it all changes during the pilgrimage. Wu Kong seems to grow affection for the monk. Wu Kong only wants to protect San Zang. When San Zang makes him leave, thinking that he killed three innocent humans when in fact they were the same demon in disguise, Wu Kong cries over his master. And I cries too when I read this chapter. He cries not for uselessness, but Wu Kong just reacts more emotionally and dramatically to some things. He starts to be human. All in all, Wu Kong is a confident, optimistic person. He doesn't just go down when facing hardships; he devises ways to overcome them, putting a smile on his face even when he has been defeated numerous times. The most intelligent and violent of the disciples, he is constantly reproved for his violence by San Zang. In short, Sun Wu Kong symbolises hope, justice, and the fighting spirit that we all possess. He made Journey to the West the literary success it is now.Besides the monkey king‟s prominent personality, some other thing should be mentioned. The story tells of many hardships. But no matter how hard, they can succeed at last. Why? Why can they overcome any kinds of difficult and finally reach the Western Heavens and bring back the scriptures to China .what‟s more, Tang San Zang and his disciples attain Buddha hood in the end of story. In my opinion, it is not just because of three disciples‟ power. The most important key is their faith that they firmly believe they can achieve the goal .their confidence and courage result in their success. If we can understand it and apply to our study or work, we‟ll necessarily benefit fro m it.Book reportDeath on the Nile 尼罗河上的惨案Agatha Christie【英】阿加莎·克里斯蒂The acknowledged queen of detective fiction, Agatha Christie was born in 1890 in Torquay, County Devon, England. In her lifetime, she authored 79 crime novels and a short story collection, 19 plays, and six novels written under the name of Mary Westmacott. Agatha Christie is the biggest selling novelist in history. Her popular whodunits have been enjoyed by readers all over the world for nearly a century and translated into more languages than Shakespeare. Her books are famous for their clever and surprising twists of plot, especially Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express.Death on the Nile is the first Agatha Christie novel I read. At first, I read the book just because it is thick enough that can help me kill time when I am bored or in a daze in my dormitory. However, I realize gradually that it is an extreme insult to Agatha Christie to read this novel just for whiling away the time. There is no doubt that her works are worth chewing and digesting instead of tasting. As an Agatha Christie fan, I must say that this is her BEST novel.Death on the Nile was written after her coming back from a winter in Egypt. And it was a book that Agatha Christie clearly enjoyed writing, imbued with her own fascination and love for Ancient Egypt. Christie had ever said that the book was one of the best of her “foreign travel” ones, and if detective stories are “escape literature”, the reader can escape to sunny skies and blue water as well as to crime in the confines of an armchair. The book has a lot of characters and a very elaborately worked out plot. I think the central situation is intriguing and has dramatic possibilities, and the three characters, Simon, Linnet, and Jacqueline .of course, the main character is always Hercule Poirot who is the worlds best, and perhaps most eccentric detective. A renowned Belgian detective, of almost comical appearance, described as having an egg shaped head and well-manicured black moustache; he is obsessed with order and symmetry and dresses smartly and precisely. He famously employs his …little grey cells‟ to uncover the psychology of the murderer and is world-renowned for hissuccess. in this story, Hercule Poirot plans a case free holiday voyage down the Nile, but the shooting death of a beautiful young heiress on her honeymoon calls him from relaxation to work. The appearance of his friend Inspector Race who is following another case is an unexpected pleasure as the two men work well together.Agatha Christie has such an ability of leading you to believe something and then snatching it away from you and leaving you in question. This makes a good mystery novelist! The plot around the death in this novel is flawless and there's no question left in the minds of the reader once the mystery is unfolded. The author, as usual, kept me waiting till the very end to find out the solution to the mystery - and I experienced extreme pleasure on reading the end. Wow, this is definitely a masterpiece, and one of Christie's best works.I had to say that this book offer us a complex tale of emotional fury, considerable atmosphere. When I read this book, I always considered me as Poirot. I read the crime took place in the moment, probably already guessed who the murderer. As usual I never got it right, but it's always fun to try. What made me feel depressed was that I often ignored a lot of details. The outcome of confirmed my guess is totally wrong. However, Often after reading his explanation of events, I've thought to myself, "Why didn't I spot that?" and flicked back through the book to see what I didn't pick up when I first read it. But surprisingly, the clues are obvious.I found that reading this kind of book need good understanding about some specific words. Details are important. If you guess not depend on details, but intuitions. Mostly, you are wrong. Commonly, guessing words may affect the understanding about the whole crime. Words can not really tell, but also guess from the spelling part of speech. Very often, is just enough to know that part of speech. For example: "Hercule Poirot shook his head and shuddered slightly." Investigation did not have time to "shudder", but it is easy to see that it is an action, detective Poirot to know a little "shudder" then, it is enough. And large landscape descriptions or more characters do not have to look at the description of appearance, as they push forward with the cases not directly linked. All in all ,I would say it is well worth a read if you're after something easy-going and mindless. The setting, the isolation of the characters to build up a claustrophobic feel, and a fantastic solution that leaves you stunned all make for a great read. It's an absolute classic.。

As a book lover, I have read many books, but the one that impressed me the most is "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. The story is about a shepherd boy named Santiago who dreams of a treasure hidden in the Egyptian pyramids. He embarks on a journey to fulfill his dream, encountering various obstacles and meeting many people along the way. Through his journey, Santiago learns about the importance of following one's heart and listening to the signs that the universe sends. One of the things that I love about this book is the way it inspires readers to pursue their dreams. Santiago's journey is a metaphor for the journey that we all take in life, and his struggles and triumphs are relatable to anyone who has ever pursued a goal. The book teaches usthat we should never give up on our dreams, no matter how difficult the journey may be.Another thing that I appreciate about this book is the way it explores the concept of destiny. Santiago's journey is guided by a series of signs and omens that he interprets as messages from the universe. This idea of a predetermined destiny is both comforting and challenging, as it suggests that our lives are guided by a higher power, but also that we have a responsibility to listen to the signs and follow our path.Overall, "The Alchemist" is a beautifully written and deeply inspiring book that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a fresh perspective on life. It reminds us that our dreams are worth pursuing, and that the journey is just as important as the destination.。

Book Report(威尼斯商人英语读后感)

Book ReportTitle of the Book:The merchant of VeniceAuthor:W. William Shakespeare (1564 —— 1616) the Great Renaissance dramatist, poet, European Renaissance humanism literaturesynthesizer. Shakespeare was born in Britain central Warwick County along the Evan River in Stratford, a wealthy family.Shakespeare in about 1590 —— 1612 of the total 20 years wrote thirty-seven plays ( such as plus and Fletcher wrote“ two of your kiss” is the thirty-eight ), he also wrote two long poem“Venus and Adonis”,“ The Rape Of Lucrece” and one hundred and fifty-four sonnets.More of his plays based on historical records, novels, folklore and the old opera and other existing materials, a reflection of the feudal society to capitalist society, the historical reality of the transition, to promote theemerging bourgeoisie humanitarianism thought and point of view of human nature.Creation background:Shakespeare created The merchant of Venice, the British are in opposition to the climax of the Jews. By law the Jews were forced to live in the old walled foundry or “Ghetto” area of the city. After sunset the gate was locked and guarded by Christians. In the day time any men leaving the ghetto had to wear a red hat to mark him as a Jew.”The fact of social condition in England in 16th century was similar to the novel described scene. At that time, Christian was in the driver’s seat; the Jews had their own belief, so they have not social status and usually were persecuted. From the economic aspect, the Jewswere prohibited to possess land; they were not allowed to have house property, because those Christians and officials would confiscate their property, so they had to be as a petty dealer, some of them practiced usury-the lending of money at interest. This made them have little cash and could survive. In law, many decrees were bad for the Jews. In addition, “Jew” has another meaning in English, such as cheapskate, usurer, andprofiteer. From this, we could see the people’s attitude to the Jews in that time.Plot of the story:Venetian nobleman Bassanio fell in love with the girl Portia, he in order to marry her; he needed to go to Belmont. So he borrowed from Jewish businessman Shylock three thousand dollars and by his good friend Antonio guaranty. But Antonio is the opponent of Shylock, so Shylock took the opportunity to put the harsh conditions: If within three months can not pay off the debt, the guarantee would cut a pound of flesh from his body to repay the debt. Finally Bassanio reached Belmont, however, Antonio suddenly went break, and he couldn’t pay Shylock’s debt. So, he was accused by Shylock, then, a group of people debated in court.Comment: The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies in the world. While Shylock is a classical figure and he is analyzed again and again. Before, especially in 16th century, many people think Shylock was a greedy, selfish, and crueland so on, and his final resultis a reason that this play is called comedy. As times goes by, people begin to re-analyze Shylock. They found when we analyze this play from Shylock’s angle, it is a tragedy. Shylock also has other characters which was not discovered before and gradually accepted now, such as: clever, frank, courageous, rich national spirit.Maybe Shylock is hateful. He as an evildoer has been punished. In the era of racial discrimination, Shylock’s final result, without doubt, it’s a good thing for clapping and cheering. While the words which describe Shylock are disdainful:cunning, merciless, mammonish and so on. Like Shylock said, many Christians and people will say the same as Antonio said “misbeliever, cut-throat dog”. Such Shylock, people will list many reasons and facts to illustrate how bad he was. However, from another angle, Shylock is very pitiful. In the novel, Shylock’s first appearance was reviled by Antonio. For the situation, if you are Shylock, what will you do? For the most part, you will fight back. But in that social condition, many people hate the Jews, and push out the usurer like Shylock.Like Shylock said in theplay “for sufferance is the budge of all our tribe”. What he does is just wipe his face with his sleeve, and watch at Antonio’s back with the hateful feeling in his eyes. Why, as an ancientChinese saying “A little impatience, a great ship”, facing Antonio, how does Shylock to use to fight against Antonio? He can do only with patience. There is no much justice in society, I think Shylock has a good character—endurance, just for this character makes him process many ducats in that time. For the second time, Bassanio to borrow money from Shylock. “Three thousand ducats; well?”,“For three months; well?”,“Three thousand ducats, for three months and Antonio bound?” Clever Sherlock knew that Bassanio now have no way to return money, but his friend Antonio will help him .SO Shylock realizes the opportunity which revenge Antonio is coming. But he doesn’t directly fightagainst Antonio. He lists an example of Jacob and says some complaining words, declared “And thrift is blessing, of men steal is not.”, then talkabout Antonio who spits on and cursed him, but hisnational spirit makes him tolerant. In this time, I think Shylock must think like that: Now, you want borrow money from me, what will I do? How canI let you go so easily? He makes Antonio signs the contract, and shows his friendly words to Antonio. How could you say Shylock isn’t clever? In the whole drama, Shylock was the most frank man. He never masks his greed. In the market, he can loudly say he hates Antonio. Like what he said, he just did himself, didn’t want to please others. When Bassanio wanted to return him money two, three times, he refused, and insisted on cutting a pound of Antonio’s meat. I think it is only the respect to the contract, but also the expression of national spirit that the oppressed fight against the Christians. At the same time, he had encourage to face the failure and the misfortune, he could defy power, insist on settling the problem by law. Although he failed, he didn’t ask for something, for Por tia’s intercede, he said“Nay, take my life and all; Pardon not that”. Faced with the final result of loss freedom of belief, he said nothing and agreed to sign. And in my opinion, in The Merchant of Venice not only has kindness and Universal love, but also embodies all kinds of unfair to the Jews. Actually Shylock was a Jew who bears the discrimination in Christian society. Under all sorts of unfair treatment, Shylock developsthe abnormal personality. His desire of revenge almost couldn't separate with his shameful feeling. People disdained his greed and hated his mercilessness. But in another aspect, he also deserved our sympathy ,and he was just in racial oppression .And standing in the other side, Shylock was not resentful, hateful, to some extend, he was just the product of the society ,which made him a selfish ,indifference, greed person.。

Book ReportIn the 1970s, the proponents of functionalism of translation in Germany categorized translating as a human action and emphasized the purpose instead of simply focusing on “textual equivalence”. And one of the important figures in about the theory is Christiane Nord, a professor of applied linguistics and translation in Germany. And this book report will briefly introduce her famous works: Translating as a Purposeful Activity: Functionalist Approaches Explained. In order to make the book report more revealing, I will unfold it chronologically in terms of the emergence and development of functionalism and the contribution made by Christiane Nord in the field.According to Christiane Nord, “Fun c tionalist”means focusing on the function or functions of texts and translations” and “functional approaches to translation were not invented in the twentieth century”. In fact, this translation theory originated from Bible translation. At medieval times, many Bible translators had felt that translation could be done at two extremes: fidelity to the source text in one situation and an adjustment to the target receivers in the other. In the book, the author presents the historical overview about the functional school which can make readers clear about the birth and development of the translation school.Historical OverviewIn 1971, Katharina Reiss put forward to a model of translation criticism in her book Possibilities and Limits of Translation Criticism, which is considered as the starting point for the scholarly analysis of translation of Germany. According to Reiss, the ideal translation would be one “in which the aim in the target language is equivalence as regards the conceptual content, linguistic form and communicative function of a source language text” ( 1977, translation in 1989:112). She refers to this kind of translation as “integral communicative performance”. Her objective approach to translation criticism thus accounts for certain exceptions from the equivalence requirement. These exceptions are due to the specifications of what we will be referring to as the …translation brief‟ (Nord, 2001: 9). One exception is when the target text is intended to achieve a purpose or function other than that of the original. A further exception is when the target text addresses an audience different from the intended readership of the original (Nord, 2001: 9).Hans J. Vermeer has gone much further in trying to bridge the gap between theory and practice. He desires to divorce linguistic translation theory by stating as follows:Linguistics alone won‟t help us. First, because translating is not merely and not even primarily a linguistic process. Secondly, because linguistics has not yet formulated the right questions to tackle our problems. So let‟s look somewhere else. (Vermeer, 1987a: 29)Vermeer defines human action as intentional, purposeful behavior that takes place in a given situation and called his theory Skopostheorie, a theory of purposeful action. In his theory, the addressee is one of the most important factors determining the purpose of a translation. The status of the source is clearly much lower inSkopostheorie than in equivalence-based theories. Vermeer regards the source text as an …offer of information‟ that is partly or wholly turned into an …offer of information‟for the target audience (Nord, 2001:12). He also presents in his theory that “Every translation is directed at an intended audience, since to translate means …to produce a text in a target setting for a target purpose and target addressees in target circumstances” (Vermeer, 1987a: 29).Justa Holz –Mänttäri, a Finland-based German professional translator goes one step further than Vermeer. His theory is based on the principles of action theory and is designed to cover all forms of intercultural transfer, including those which do not involve any source or target texts (Nord, 2001:13). In Holz –Mänttäri‟s model, translation is defined as “a complex action designed to achieve a particular purpose”(Holz –Mänttäri and Vermeer, 1985: 4). The generic term for the phenomenon is …translational action‟. The purpose of translational action is to transfer messages across culture and language barriers by means of message transmitters produced by experts. Holz –Mänttäri places special emphasis on the actional aspects of the translation process, analyzing the roles of the participants like initiator, translator, user, message receiver and the situational conditions such as time, place and medium in which the activities take place. One of her prime concern is the status of translators in a world.Basic Aspects of SkopostheorieSkopostheorie was proposed in 1978 by Hans J. Vermeer, in his works "Framework for a General Translation Theory"; Vermeer considers "translation to be a type of transfer where communicative verbal and non-verbal signs are transferred from one language into another." (Nord, 2001:11). What's more, it is also assumed that translation must be a type of human action with a distinct purpose. This functionalist theory particularly emphasizes target-orientation of translation. And it also stresses the translation situation which always determines the set of translation strategies to be used. In the following part we will take a closer look at some of the basic concepts and rules of Skopostheorie, which will also serves as the theoretical framework for the present study. Skopos is the Greek word for "purpose". According to Skopostheorie, the prime principle determining any translation process is the purpose (Skopos) of the overall translational action. This fits in with intentionality being part of the very definition of any action. When we say that an action is intentional, we presuppose the existence of free will and a choice between at least two possible forms of behavior. The reason why the translator chooses one form of behavior over another lies in the fact that it is held to be more appropriate in attaining the intended goal or purpose (Skopos)."Purpose" is defined as a provisional stage in the process of attaining an aim. Aim and purpose are thus relative concepts. (Vermeer, 1989a: 94)"Function" refers to what a text means or is intended to mean from the receiver's point of view, whereas the aim is the purpose for which it is needed or supposed to be needed. (Vermeer, 1989a: 95)"Intention" is conceived as an "aim-oriented plan of action" on the part of both the sender and the receiver, pointing toward an appropriate way of producing orunderstanding the text. (Vermeer, 1986a: 414)As a general rule Vermeer considers the above teleological concepts to be equivalent, subsuming them under the generic concept of Skopos. There exist three possible kinds of purpose in the field of translation: the general purpose aimed at by the translator in the translation process (perhaps "to earn a living"), the communicative purpose aimed at by the target text in the target situation (perhaps "to instruct the reader") and the purpose aimed at by a particular translation strategy or procedure (for example, "to translate literally in order to show the structural particularities of the source language") (Vermeer 1989a: 100).Nevertheless, the term Skopos usually refers to the purpose of the target text. Apart from the term Skopos, Vermeer uses the related words aim, purpose, intention and function. According to Vermeer: "Aim" is defined as the final result an agent intends to achieve by means of an action. (Vermeer, 1986a: 239)。
