AMy college experience included this life-skill lesson: Drink alcohol on a full stomach. Or you will get inebriated too quickly. Of course, most college students shouldn’t be drinking at all, but we know from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism that close to 60 percent of college students aged 18 to 22 do consume alcohol, which makes harm-reducing approaches important.Unfortunately, campus authorities and researchers are reporting a practice that turns the full-stomach drinking strategy on its head: rather than filling up before a night of partying, significant numbers of students refuse to eat all day before consuming alcohol. This is a high-risk behavior called “drunkorexia,” which is one part eating disorder, one part alcoholism—a very dangerous combination for college-age students. The term drunkorexia, which can also include excessive exercise or purging before consuming alcohol, was coined about 10 years ago, and it started showing up in medical research around 2012. Drunkorexia addresses the need to be the life of the party while staying extremely thin, pointing to a flawed mind-set about body image and alcoholism among college students, mostly women.Imagine this scenario: A femal e college freshman doesn’t eat anything all day, exercises on an empty stomach, then downs five shots of tequila in less than two hours. Because there’s no food in her system to help slow the absorption of alcohol, those shots affect her rapidly, leading to inebriation and possibly passing out, vomiting or suffering alcohol poisoning. That’s drunkorexia.Tavis Glassman, professor of health education and public health at the University of Toledo in Ohio, researches drunkorexia and worries about scenarios suc h as the one described above: “With nothing in her system, alcohol hits quickly, and that brings up the same issues as with any high-risk drinking: getting home safely, sexual assault, unintentional injury, fights, hangovers that affect class attendance and grades, and possibly ending up in emergency because the alcohol hits so hard,” he says.“Alcohol can negatively affect the liver or gastrointestinal system, it can interfere with sleep, lower the immune system and is linked to several types of cancers,” Hultin says.1. What does the underlined word “inebriated” in paragraph 1 mean?A. excitedB. overwhelmedC. addictedD. drunk2. We can infer from the passage that ____________.A. a large number of college students spend most of their nights partyingB. some college students refuse to eat before drinking alcohol to keep slimC. There is a direct link between body image and consuming alcoholD. female college student is more likely to be hurt if she drinks alcohol3. Which of the following may Tavis Glassman agree with?A. With more food in one’s system, he may suffer from the effects of alcohol slowly.B. Drinking five shots of tequila in less than two hours is the performance of drunkorexia.C. Those who don’t attend classes and have lower grades tend to be addicted to alcohol.D. Alcohol has negative effects on the immune system and may lead to several cancers.BThe first men and women came to Britain over two and a half million years ago. They were hunters and gatherers of food who used stone tools and weapons. But the British Isles only became islands separate from the rest of Europe about 8,500 years ago, when melting ice formed the English Channel!3,000 years after Britain became an island, new tribes who came by boat from the mainland introduced farming. These tribes built earthworks for protection and as tombs for their dead. Many of these man-made hills can still be seen.Later on, people learned to build stone monuments. The most amazing is Stonehenge, a circle of huge stones begun about 4,500 ye ars ago. Stonehenge is the world’s most famous prehistoric monument. We don’t know what it meant or what it was used for, though many different suggestions have been made.3,000 years ago the climate in Britain became colder and wetter than before, and people had to move down from high ground. A bit later iron started to be sued for tools and weapons instead of bronze.Knowledge of ironworking may have been brought by the Celts, a new wave of immigrants who started to arrive from southern Europe in about 500 BC.What we know about the first people in Britain has been worked out by archaeologists from the remains they left behind them. Pytheas, a Greek, was the first person who could read and write to come to Britain. His visit was in about 330 BC, over 2000 years after Stonehenge was begun. Unfortunately, what Pytheas wrote has been lost, so we don’t have any written record of Britain until the Romans came, almost 300 years after he did!4.This passage mainly tells us _______ .A.The dawn of history in BritainB.How English Channel was formedC.How the British made a living millions of years agoD.When humans appeared on the British Isles5.In this passage “the man-made hill” probably refers to ___________ .A.The small islands in BritainB.Earthworks for protection and as tombsC.The amazing StonehengeD.The farms opened up by the first man6.Why did people move to low ground 3,000 years ago?A.Because iron tools were used for farmingB.Because the climate made it unfit for man to live thereC.Because more people arrived from southern EuropeD.Because the Celts forced them to do so7.Only after ________ do people have written records about Britain.A.the arrival of the CeltsB.Stonehenge was begunC.Pytheas’s visitD.the Romans cameCDuring Amsterdam’s chaotic rush hour, nine -year-old Lotta Crok cycles to a very busy junction. “Look,” she says. “There’s traffic coming from everywhere. Four trams from four differ ent directions. For a child on a bike that’s really confusing!”Lotta is the first junior cycle mayor in the world and her working area is the Dutch capital. You would think this challenge would be superfluous in a city known as the bicycle capital of the world. The number of bicycles in Amsterdam is estimated at 81,000 - more than the city’s 850,000 inhabitants - and 63% of the population cycle daily. But children who cycle in Amsterdam face challenges, Lotta says: “The three biggest problems for us are ca rs, cycling tourists and scooters (小型摩托). The cars take up too much space, the tourists are always swinging side to side and stop when you least expect it, and the scooters simply run you over.”Lotta became junior cycle mayor in June last year when shewon a contest in which school children were asked to come up with plans to make cycling safer and more fun. Her idea was to add children’s bikes to the popular bike share programme.Since Lotta was appointed junior cycle mayor, she has been busy, giving interviews, opening cycling contests in the city and being a jury (评审员) member during the Amsterdam Light Parade, an event in which Amsterdammers decorate their bikes with lights. She is now planning a meeting with the city’s mayor to discuss ideas that childr en have come up with: “One of our proposals is a bicycle park w here children can learn how to cycle. Right now, most of us learn a it in the street, which can be quite busy. Another idea is to create an app for tourists to teach them the rules of cycling, because most of them really don’t know.”Following the success of the Amsterdam scheme, cycle mayors around the world are now planning to appoint junior colleagues. “They see it works really well,” Boerma, the senior major, says. “I talk to the parents, L otta talks to the children. And if you look at the city through the eyes of a child, you will also make it accessible for others. A city that’s good for an eight-year-old is also good for an 88-year-old.”8. Why is a junior cycle mayor appointed in Amsterdam?A. To teach children how to ride.B. To ensure cycling is safer for children.C. To give suggestions to the city’s mayor on how to run the city.D. To organize the cycling contests in the city.9. Which word can best replace the underlined word “superfluous” in paragraph 2?A. ImportantB. UnnecessaryC. DifficultD. Valuable10. What has Lotta done since she became the bike mayor? .A. She has solved the three biggest problems for children cycling in Amsterdam.B. She has won a contest about cycling.C. She has given interviews and been a jury member during a parade.D. She has given proposals to the city mayor.11. What’s Boerma’s attitude to the junior cycle mayor?A. CautiousB. FavorableC. AmbiguousD. DisapprovingDGive yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door? If your awareness is as sharp as it could be, you’ll have no trouble answering these questions. Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A c hild’s day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But distinctions that were sharp to us as children become unclear; we are numb(麻木的)to new stimulation(刺激), new ideas. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits. The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the RockyMountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring. Later they all admitted they'd felt cold water at first.Another block to awareness is the obsession(痴迷) many of us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guid es, and said, a “ruby-crowned kinglet” and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing. The pressures of “time” and “destination” are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark. It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, to take a moment to s ee what’s around them. I asked them what they’d seen. “Oh, a few birds, ” they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this frame of mind and you will open a new dimension to your life.12. According to Paragraph 2, compared with adults, children are more ________.A. anxious to do wonders.B. sensitive to others’ feelings.C. likely to develop unpleasant habits.D. eager to explore the world around them.13. What idea does the author convey in Paragraph 3?A. To avoid jumping to conclusions.B. To stop complaining all the time.C. To follow the teacher’s advice.D. To admit mistakes honestly.14. The bird watchers’ behavior shows that they _______.A. are very patient in their observation.B. are really fascinated by nature.C. care only about the names of birds.D. question the accuracy of the field guides.15. In the passage, the author intends to tell us we should ______.A. fill our senses to feel the wonders of the world.B. get rid of some bad habits in our daily life.C. open our mind to new things and ideas.D. try our best to protect nature.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Applaud pattern recognitionC. Love the way you walkD. Better the mats you step onD"With depressingly few exceptions, performances are dull and lackvitality…After years of trying to convince myself otherwise,I now feel sure thatballet is dying."-----Jennifer Homans,Apollo's Angels Is ballet dead?Has the artform evolved to depression?Jennifer Homans's conclusion to herfascinating history of ballet,Apollo's Angels,is worrying. It appears that ballet's pulse continues to beat strongly, however, especially with aTchaikovsky defibrillator attached. So why are some dance commentators arguing that ballet is dying? And do they have a point?"Ballet is dead"----"Ballet is dying" ---all ring tones of Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical claim:"God is dead." Headline grabbling, certainly.Yet can ballet be defined in such black and white terms?Surely it is more abstract, filled with shades of popular grey.①.To start with, how do you define ballet? What is ballet today?Consider popular modern classics like Twyla Tharp's In the Upper Room, where dancers wear pointy shoes and sneakers, combining contemporary and classical vocabulary together.Or closer to home, there is Graeme Murphy's Swan Lake, which layers elements of Petipa's choreography(编舞)with a contemporary theme and aesthetic. Many contemporary choreographers all embrace classical form and principles, then manipulate(操纵)the rules.②.The line between contemporary dance and ballet is vague. In an interview with The Telegraph (2015),British choreographer Mattew Bourne acknowledges that this "cross-fertilisation" between contemporary dance and ballet continues to grow,as evidenced by the rise in new commissions from contemporary choreographers at the Royal Ballet and English National Ballet.Referring to Homans's book,Bourne believes what has changed is that "the dance forms are coming closer together".Not dying, but merging.Reinventing .This has been the case amongst Australasian ballet companies for many years now.③.Homans writes that ballet's decline began after the passing of Ashton and Balanchine.Something ahs changed, certainly.A stylisic transition----from neo-classical to contemporary ballet----has occurred.④.Our art form's evolution has always been with extinction.Prominent dance critic with The New York Times,Alastair Macaulay, says:"ballet has died again and again over the centuries," and yet,"phoenix-like,rose again from its ashes".History shows there were periods where ballet hibernated and lacked popularity. This coincided with the art form's changing forums. So here is the irony:what sells best, still, are reproductions of Petipa's classics.A season without a Tchaikovsky score is a financial risk. And without Nutcracker(《胡桃夹⼦》),half the ballet companies in North America would not exist.Admittedly,as a dancer,my favourite roles---Albrecht,Prince Siegfried and Romeo----were from the classical canon ;I am a traditionalist at heart (who loves to be challenged by good contemporary ballets).A part of the charm behind classical repertoire, for me,was in reproducing the glories of past greats.Classical ballet's framework supports the modern process of bench-marking.Perhaps Jennifer Homans's thoughts are not completely unfounded.Perhaps ballet isdying for some.Ballet's evolution has been delayed by its audiences. And as Homans suggests in her epilogue, perhaps also by its creatives. Now here is a bold prediction. In line with the Royal Ballet's programming in Brisbane this year----of Christopher Wheeldon's The Winter's Tale, and Wayne MacGregor's Woolf Works----over the next 20 years, ballet's reliance on Petipa will decrease.Contemporary ballets and merge-styled ballets will produce their box-office influence ever more. Why?It is simple:our audiences will be ready for ballet to change again.25.Why does the writer cite Jennifer Homans's words at the beginning of the passage?______A. To support the writer's viewpoint.B. To introduce the topic of the passage.C. To highlight the theme of the passageD. After all, there is no contract locking us to the other person, as in marriage, and there are no blood bonds, as in family. We choose our friends, and our friends choose us. That's a really distinctive attribute of friendships. But modern life can become so busy that people forget to keep choosing each other. That's when friendships fade, and there's reason to believe it's happening more than ever. Loneliness is on the rise, and feeling lonely has been found to increase a person's risk of dying early by 26%----a nd to be even worse for the body than obesity and air pollution.Loneliness damages health in many ways, particularly because it removes the safety net of social support."When we perceive our world as threatening, that can be associated with an increase in heart rate and blood pressure."The solution is simple: friendship. It helps protect the brain and body from stress, anxiety and depression. "Being around trusted others, in essence, signals safety and security," says Holt-Lunstad.A study last year found that friendships are especially beneficial later in life.Having supportive friends in old age is a stronger predictor of well-being than family tie s ----suggesting that the friends you pick may be at least as important as the family you're born into.Easy as the fix may sound, it can be difficult to keep and make friends as an adult. But research suggests that you only need between four and five close pals.If you've ever had a good one, you know hat you're looking for."The expectations of friends, once you have a mature understanding of friendship, don't really change across the life course," Rawlins says."People want their close friends to be someone they can talk to and someone they can d epend upon."If you're trying to fill a dried-up friendship pool, start by looking inward.Think back to how you met some of your very favorite friends.Volunteering on a political campaign or in a favorite spin class? Playing in a band? "Friendships are always about something," says Rawlins.Common passions help people bond at a personal level, and they bridge people of different ages and life experiences.Whatever you're into, someone else is too.Let your passion guide you toward people. Volunteer, for example, take a new course or join a committee at your community centers. If you like yoga, start going to classes regularly.Fellow dog lovers tend to gather at dog runs.Using apps and social media----like Facebook to find a local book club----is also a good way to find easy-going folks.Once you meet a potential future friend, then comes the scary part:inviting them to do something. "You do have to put yourself out there," says Janice McCabe, associate professor of sociology at Dartmouth College and a friendship researcher. "There's a chance that the person will say no.But there's also the chance they'll say yes, and something really great could happen." The process takes time, and you may experience false starts. Not everyone will want to put in the effort necessary to be a good friend. It's never too late to start being a better pal.The work you put into friendships----both new and old --- will be well worth it for your health and happiness.Outline Supporting detailsProblems ●Making friends (1)______ people of negative feelings, especially benefiting the old. To them, these young performers have brought the characters alive again."I was impressed by their perfect acting in the TV series.I never expected they could play so well. It is as good as the 1987 TV adaptation," a Douban user commented. Before the shooting of the 1987 TV version, all the actors and actresses received systematic acting training and guided studyt of the original work. This time, Ouyang Fenqiang, who played the leading role,Jia Baoyu, in the 1987 version, was invited to instruct the young performers. However, this is only one of the very few cases of being faithful to the original literature.Recent years have witnessed a large number of poor-quality film and TV adaptations of literature classics, spoiling the understanding of the original work.Whether classic literature works should be adapted into film or TV series is worthy of di scussion.[写作内容]1.⽤约30个单词概括上述⽂字材料的主要内容.2.⽤120个单词发表你的观点,内容包括:(1)⽀持或反对把经典⽂学作品改编为影视作品;(2)⽤2-3个理由或论据⽀撑你的观点.[写作要求]1. 考查连词的⽤法.A.if 如果,是否;B.as 当……

A single fingerprint can distinguish whether someone has recently touched cocaine or actually ingested(吞下)it.This test can be completed in less than 2 minutes, far quicker than blood tests, and could be used for forensic(法庭的)investigations or drug testing. Melanie Bailey at the University of Surrey in the UK and her colleagues have developed a technique that detects trace amounts of cocaine, as well as signs of cocaine use, on human"You can use it to say either somebody's touched the drug or they've ingested it, " says Bailey. As well as cocaine, the test picks up on a molecule called benzoylecgonine, which is excreted(分泌)through the skin after a person has taken cocaine. The chemical is also present as an impurity in some street samples of cocaine."Benzoylecgonine in street cocaine actually washes off the fingers, "says Bailey. But a person who has ingested cocaine will continue to excrete the molecule through their sweat, so even after washing their hands it is detectable in a fingerprint.Bailey and her team took fingerprints from people who had touched samples of cocaine of 99 per cent purity as well as street samples that were far less pure. They took fingerprints immediately after the drug had been handled and again after participants had washed their hands. They also took fingerprints from 26 people at a drug rehabilitation(康复)clinic who reported taking cocaine in the past 24 hours. For the test, the individual presses their finger onto a piece of specialised paper for 10 seconds. The paper is then analysed using a technique called mass spectrometry to detect the presence of cocaine or benzoylecgonine. In the 86 samples, the fingerprinting technique was 95 per cent accurate. The team found that detection was possible up to 48 hours after contact or ingestion.Unlike blood tests, which are the current standard for testing cocaine use, the fingerprint analysis can be completed in less than 2 minutes. The technique is now commercially available and could be used for drug testing."If someone's ingested cocaine, you wouldn't want them to fly a plane or drive a bus, "says Bailey.(1)What is one of the advantages of this fingerprint technique?________A It requires much less testing time.B It helps to get rid of waste material.C It promises a 100 percent accuracy.D It causes the crime rate to decrease..(2)What is the core of Bailey and her team's study?________A Collecting samples of cocaine of 99% purity.B Pressing fingers onto specialized paper for 10 seconds.C Comparing and analyzing different sorts of fingerprint data.D Taking fingerprints from 26 people taking cocaine in the past 24 hours..(3)Where can this technique be applied?________A Treating drug patients.B Identifying drug driving.C Purifyingcocaine. D Promoting the commercial market.19. Recent data released from the Department of Labor in the US show that for the first time in 10 years, women make up more than half(50.04%)of the workforce. Many have celebrated this milestone as proof that women are inching toward equality in the workplace. After all, a symbol of women's equality in America has always been increased via labor force participation. For women in today's economy, however, increased employment also carries an increased burden.Women earn less, have less flexibility in terms of their work schedules to meetcaretaking demands, and are more likely to experience discrimination based on gender or sexual harassment than their male counterparts(相同的人物)in the workforce.Women earn less than men in nearly every occupation for which there is available data.If we do nothing, women will not reach economic equality with men until 2059.For women of color, it will take more than a century: 2130 for black women and 2224 for Hispanic women (those from Latin America). This means women will have to work longer or hold multiple jobs to make ends meet and to care for their families.Increased employment among women has not translated into less work at home. Many women in the workforce are still primarily responsible for the lion's share of housework and caretaking responsibilities compared with men.A new study by Oxfam America﹣Institute for Women' s Policy Research finds that women in the United States spend 37% more time on household and care work than their male counterparts, limiting career choices and economic mobility, and affecting their overall health and well﹣being.Black and Hispanic women spend nearly twice as much time on unpaid housework and caretaking demands as their male counterparts.Much has been made about our strong economy as measured by how well the stock market performs and low unemployment. There's no doubt the increase in workforce participation among women will help boost this narrative(叙述).However, it does not mean that women are more economically secure. In today's economy, working and middle﹣class families continue to struggle with rising housing and health care costs, stagnant(停滞的)wages and a shift to a technology﹣driven economy fueled by automation and the loss of manufacturing jobs. These trends have a extreme impact on women.(1)Why have people celebrated women's taking up more than half of the workforce?________A Because women are likely to replace men in some fields.B Because that is the symbol of labor force participation.C Because it indicates more equality for women at workplace.D Because the data was released from the Department of Labor..(2)The numbers in Para.3 are used to emphasize that________A women's inequality is a hard nut to crack.B women have to bear an increased burdenC women earn less than men in every occupationD women of color see no hope to reach equality.(3)Why doesn't women's employment mean women are more economically secure?________A Manufacturing jobs are increased by high﹣tech automation.B The trends in today's economy are unfavourable to women.C Economy is measured by the performance of the stock market.D Women are responsible for rising housing and health care costs..(4)Which would be the best title for this passage?________A Women's Participation and Economic growthB Over Half of Women Have Entered the WorkforceC Women Spend More Time on Household Than MenD Women'sIncreased Employment Carries Increased Burden.20. My father died when I was four years old.He was only 27 and had been working as an assistant city lawyer in Reno, Nevada, for two years.I only mention that last part because it meant he wasn't entitled to the state employees' pension, so my mom didn't get any survivor's benefits. She was 28, pregnant with my younger sister, and unemployed. She'd been forced out of her job as a speech therapist. In the early 1970s, the majority of U.S.school districts forced pregnant women to take unpaid leave, or just fired them when their "condition" became obvious.Even today, women still aren't equal to men in these 16 ways.I don't have a lot of specific memories from that time, but I do remember two moments from these terrible months very clearly. One was my mother telling me that my father had died.I wept, understanding that this meant we could no longer be with him, but I wondered if maybe we could phone him."By long﹣distance, "I suggested. When my mom finally shook her head no, ________.Anything can happen. The other thing I remember happened shortly after my sister was born. While she nursed, I was tight at my mother's side."We'll be okay, " my mom said."I can work." It didn't matter that I had the only the vaguest conception of what"work"was…something parents did while kids were at preschool? I'd been hopelessly sinking and, magically, a________ appeared.Three months after my sister was born, a speech therapist's position in the local school district opened, and my mother got the job.Somehow, that spring, we moved out of my father's childhood bedroom﹣which my mom, sister, and I had been sharing at my paternal grandparents home since my dad had died﹣and into our own little house. The next fall, I started kindergarten, walking to a neighborhood school with a little posse(一群人), just like a normal kid.By that fall, my mom was not only working full﹣time during the day, but also taking classes in the evening, so she could qualify for a higher salary with her school district, and working extra jobs.My mom working 80+hours a week wasn't easy or pleasant. My sister and I were tossed(扔)from grandparents to friends' moms to babysitters to corners of rooms where our mother was teaching. Our house was a mess.I got scolded by teachers for failing to return field﹣trip permission slips. My mother was often exhausted﹣and exhaustion made her no fun at best, scary at worst. But I also learned the most important lesson of my life: Work=survival.Like most girls who grew up in the 1950s, my mother never expected to have a"career."She went to college because that's what the daughters of upwardly mobile families(or those, like my mother's, hoping to become upwardly mobile)did. In other words, university campuses were where the best potential husbands were.My mom studied education because it was a major her father deemed(认为)appropriate for a young lady.Though the job didn't fascinate my mom at all, she was proud that she could motivate kids to do the repetitive, boring, sometimes really hard exercises that enable them to express themselves clearly.I've been far more fortunate than my mother.I grew up in an era in which American girls were encouraged to have professional dreams﹣huge ones. While I was in high school, Sally Ride became the first American female astronaut, Sandra Day O'Connor became the firstfemale U.S.Supreme Court Justice, and Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman to be a candidate for Vice President on a major party ticket. These are just a few of the moments that changed women's history forever.(1)Why did the author mention her late father?________A To claim survivor's benefits for her mother.B To express her deep love for her late father.C To describe how hard her mom was struggling.D To underline how unfairly her mom was treated..(2)What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 indicate?________A The author was curious about everything.B The author refused to believe her mother.C The author insisted on phoning her father.D The author grew up earlier than other kids..(3)What does the underlined word "floatie" in Paragraph 3 refer to?________A The newly﹣born sister.B The preschool education.C The job opportunity.D The move into their own house..(4)What was her mother like in the author's eye?________A She was qualified for a higher salary.B She was able to solve all the problems.C She was patient even if she felt tired.D She was desperate to work to survive..(5)Why did the author's mother go to college?________A She developed great interest in education.B She intended to land a better job in future.C She was expected to enter a higher social class.D She wanted to be qualified for different jobs..(6)Why does the author say she has been more fortunate than her mother?________A The author had the chance of receiving good education.B The author could have equal professional dreams as men.C The author happened to know many successful women.D The author managed to change women 's history forever. 21. Emissions are gases and other particles(微粒)that are released into the atmosphere as a result of burning fuels and other processes. The most common types generally come from automobiles, power plants, and industrial companies. The results of too many emissions being released into the atmosphere are poor air quality, global warming, and heavy pollution.Humans contribute to most air emissions although some animals such as livestock do contribute to a portion of carbon dioxide into the air through digestive process.Despitestricter clean air guidelines, the United States has the highest level of human emissions in the world. This is followed by other industrialized nations like Japan,England, and so on.Many nations are developing rapidly, thus increasing the problem of greenhouse gas emissions in certain areas. The increase in emissions brought about by the introduction of the automobile and fossil fuel power has led to government﹣mandated(政府强制的)restrictions on companies and car manufacturers. And measures have been taken to help improve air quality and cut down on greenhouse gases. This is a good start, but it is only one step in the right direction. The most common emissions released by both human beings and through natural sources are carbon dioxide, methane gas, nitrous oxide, halocarbon, and hexafluoride. Most of them are found in nature but have increased in quantity with the regular burning of fossil fuels.Ozone is another emission that comes as a result of man﹣made gases combined with natural ones.As more is learned about global warming and climate change, environmental groups and some government agencies are trying to find new ways to prevent these things from happening.Technologies which make cars and trucks run without the use of fossil fuels are now available in many areas, and solar energy has become a popular power source in many homes and businesses. If used by many people, these things could truly cut down on the amount of emissions produced by humans each year.Clean energy solutions are the best way to stop this problem from getting worse.Clean energy refers to any energy source that does not emit poisonous gases into the air. Most forms of clean energy are also sustainable, meaning that they never run out.The most common sources of clean energy include solar energy and wind energy. Both are becoming widely available for everyday consumers,as well as affordable.第五部分书面表达(满分25分)22. 阅读下面短文,按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的短文.Traditional Chinese Medicine, commonly referred to as TCM,is one of the oldest forms of medical treatment. Its origins date back over 2000 years and it has stood the test of time remaining the main form of medicine used in China.Traditional Chinese Medicine has made great contributions to the health of Chinese people, and it became an independent medical system in world medical field with its special clinical effect, scientific theory system and rich practice experience.Recently, faced with the outbreak of COVID﹣19,many drugs and vaccines are still in research and development stage and have not been put into clinical use.But in China, researchers have.achieved good results in the treatment of COVID﹣19 with the application of traditional Chinese medicine. There are more than 60 kinds of traditional Chinese medicine commonly used in treatment. We can create defining moments in our lives.B. Defining moments ar ejust ou tof our control.C. No similarities exist between defining moments.D. Defining moments consist of smaller experiences.19.We can learn from the experiment that ______ .A. the striking moments are more likely to be remembered.B. the length of an experience determines our memory of itC. it is meaningful to distinguish the bits in bdetween flagship moments.D. all the components of an experience should be equally remembered20.What would probably be discussed in the following part of the text?______A. What to prepare for life's trials.B. Why to create defining moments.C. Whom to owe our good fates to.D. How to create life's big moments.CAustralian magpies can understand what other birds are saying to each other,a new study has found. The research, published in the journal Animal Behavior, says the magpie has learned the meanings of different noisy miner calls and essentially eavesdrops(偷听)to find out which predators(食肉动物)are near.Noisy miners----a small, native honeyeater----have different warning calls for ground-based and aerial(飞行的)predators.By playing both kinds of recording to a series of wild magpies, researchers observed the magpies raising their beaks(喙)to the sky,or dropping their heads to the ground.Researchers attracted the magpies with cheese, then played the noisy miner calls, videotaping the results. As a control, they also rolled a large orange ball towards the magpies to se ehow they ordinarily tilted(倾斜)their beaks to ground threats, and threw the ball to see how they reacted to aerial threats. The researchers recorded an average maximum beak angle of 29 degrees for the thrown ball, and an average maximum of nine degrees when it was rolled. The miners' aerial warnng caused an average maximum beak angle of 31 degrees, and the ground warning caused an average maximum of 24.One of the study's authors,Dominique Potvin, said the magpies showed an astonishing level of insight.Magpies and miners broadly face the same types of predators and the two frequently live in the same ecosystem.Potvin said this had encouraged the magpies' learned behavior."Magpies are generally found on the ground and noisy miners are generally found up in trees. It pays for the magpie to pay attention to somebody who has a better view of predators than they do."She said it was unclear whether other birds could do the same, but it was highly likely other magpies around Australia already did."Magpies are a pretty smart group. We're not sure if they''re learning this from other magpies or if they're figuring it out on their own,but the ability is there. As part of the experiment, researchers also played a third call:a common,non-warning call from a crimson rosella. They found the magpies did not respond.Potvin said that we had been actively exploring animal cognition(认知)research."It's a good piece of the puzzle," Potvin said."Looking at the social relationships between species that live in communities."21.What have the researchers found about Australian magpies?______A. They can understand other bird calls.B. They can communicate with noisy miners.C. They have a special preference for cheeses.D. They have the ability to warn the predators.22.How did the researchers get their findings?______A. By calculating the beak angles of aerial and ground predators.B. By comparing the magie and the miner responses to threats.C. By monitoring the magpie responses to the miner warning calls.D. By recording the magpie louder scream for other birds' attention.23.The magpies' cognition can help them ______ .A. have a better view of the predators than the minersB. better protect themselves from the potential threatsC. cooperate with other birds to drive away the predatorsD. live in harmony with other birds in the same ecosystem24.We can learn from the passage that ______ .A. the magpies are smart learners of other birds' behaviourB. it's likely that other birds have developed the same abilityC. the findings have clarified the relationships between speciesD. a lot more remains to be explored about animal cognitionDUN scholars have calculated that within the next 10 years the degradation(退化)of farm and grassland could turn 50 million people into migrants.Another UN agency calculated that in the last 25 years, another 3% of the planet's forests had been burned or cut down.Once yhou have read Gaia Vince's book, you start to register the scale of change in afast---changing world.Adventures in the Anthropocene holds a mirror up to humanity and says:look what you have done to the world, they only world you will ever have. The Anthropocene----the Age of Man----is a proposed new name for the quaternary (第四纪)period that we now live in,and it includes what has come to be called the Great Acceleration,in which during the last 65 years, whatever humans did, they did it faster and more effectively, and on a greater scale, while at the same time reproducing more and dying much less.Did it take 50,000 years to reach a population of one billion?Just in the last 10 years, another billion people appeared on the planet, and by the end of this century,it could be home to 9,or 10,or 11 billion souls, each of which will hope for the minimum to sustain health and contentment. Many of them will demand a lot more, which is where the problems begin. To build cities, pave highways and establish factories, humans decades ago became the greatest earth-moving force on the planet:they each year shift more rock and soil than the wind and the rain,k the rivers and the glaciers(冰川)combined.Cities now cover 2% of the planet's land:by 2030,this will be 10%.Over the next 80 years, the species will build a city for one million people every 10 days.To keep these cities functioning, humans will consume 18 terawatts of energy and by 2020,around 5 billion of them will have smartphones, and internet access, and already people who are miserably poor can see,at a finger's touch, what they are missing, and want it for themselves, and in the course of trying ot get it,consume more resources and cause destruction to ecosystem.Anyone who reads this book will have no excuse for not thinking about it.Vince doesn't just collect the statistics of exploitation and destruction, she goes to see for herself what they mean.Like a good reporter, she tries to see both sides:she explores both the human destruction and the beneficial and sometimes amazing solutions that human wisdom can deliver. She does the legwork too:she climbs up steep mountainsides in Nepal, and in Ladakh, looks at hydroelectric plans in Patagonia, walks through the forest to get closer to a tiger, steps out in the slums near Cartagena in Colombia, and slips down an Amazon tributary in a dugout.Everywhere in the world, the ice is disappearing, but in Ladakh,an engineer has worked out a way to make artificial glaciers to store the water for summer growth, and in doing so has given the villagers not just security but a new kind of hopee. In every chapter, there are excellent stories like this, glimpses(一瞥)of the other world that perhaps we could have made for ourselves.Necessarily,to get around a topic that involves all human history and all geography too,she has to be brief, and so in every chapter, she leaves you wanting more. This is usually considered to be a good thing.Good or not,it is difficult to see.And if she helps readers understand a little better the loss and suffering lies behind the exploitation of the rare earths, then it becomes in every sense a good book.25.The statistics in the first paragraph are meant to ______ .A. rid people of their concerns about the earthB. stress the gravity of the destruction of the earthC. clarify people's misunderstandings of the earthD. warn people of the contraditory reports about the earth26.The underlined part in Paragraph 3 most probably means ______ .A. more trees were planted and fewer of them diedB. people produced much more than they consumedC. the birth rate was higher and the death rate was lowerD. more animals were raised and the universal rate was higher27.According to the author, the construciton of cities and infrastructures will ______ .A. create more job opportunkities for citizensB. narrow the gap between the rich and the poorC. promote globalization and economic developmentD. cause overconsumption and ecological destruction28.Why does the book set peopel thinking?______A. But her colleaguemay interpret her offer as a lack of faith in his abilities. Just as he misunderstands her, she misunderstands him: She offered h im help because she thought he was overworked and stressed. He has, after all, bee n showing up early to work and going home late every day. But that' s not why he's ke eping strange hours; he just works best when the office is less crowded. These kinds of misunderstandings lead to conflict and resentment(怨恨) not just at work, but at home too. How many fights between couples have started with one person misinterpreting what another says and oes? He stares at his plate at dinner while she's telling a story and she assumes he doesn't care about what she's saying , when really he is admiring the beautiful meal she made. Most of the time, Halvorson says, people don't realize they are not coming across the way they think they are. "If I ask you," Halvorson told me, "about how you see yourself----what traits(特点) you would say describe you --- and I ask someone who knows you well to list your traits, there's a big gap between how other people see us and how we see ourselves."This gap arises from some quirks(习惯) of human psychology. Most people suffer from what psychologists call "the trans parency illusion"---- the belief that what they feel, desire, and intend is crystal clear t o others, even though they have done very little to communicate clearly what is going on inside their minds.Because the perceived assume they are transparent, they might not spend the time or effort to be as clear and forthcoming about their intentions or emotional states as they co uld be, giving the perceiver very little information with which to make an accurate jud gment. The perceiver, meanwhile, is dealing with two powerful psychological forc es that are warping(歪曲) his ability to read others accurately.Chances are that you "I'm kind of hurt by what you just said" face probably looks an a wful lot like your "I'm not at all hurt by what you just said" face. And the majority of ti mes that you've said to yourself, "I made my intentions clear,五、书面表达(本大题共1小题,共25.0分)52.请认真阅读下面有关某校学生父母教育方式现状调查的饼状图及相关文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章.One Friday in June, 2018. In recent years I have had two very good roles on television: Florence, the wisecracking maid on the series The Jeffersons, and Mary, the mother who holds things together on 227 . But 17 years ago, in 1972 when I was just getting started in theater work, I thought I'd never make it as an actress. For that matter, I couldn't even hold my life together or afford a home of my own. Back then I had about as much self-confidence as a chicken in a fox's nest. I was recovering from surgery and had been off work for six months from my job as a United Airlines reservations agent. I'd had some bit parts in local theater groups, but those came and went, not leading to anything bigger. Worse, as a single mother with three youngsters, I had no place to live. My children were staying with their father while I recovered in an aunt's apartment. Lying in bed, staring hopelessly at the wall, I didn't know what to do or where to turn. Then one Sunday morning I aimlessly turned on the television set, and there were actor Robert Young and his wife talking about their faith. I sat right up in bed. They said, " When one door closes, a better one opens," Well, I wasn't going to just sit staring at the closed one. So I got up and trudged(跋涉) on. Even if my shoes wore out, I decided, my faith wouldn't. Later, when I began filling small parts in television productions, that self-confidence showed. I'd always done my best to play the role as I thought the director wanted, but now I found myself freer to interpret it, I was more natural, more me. 4. What do the underlined words " hold my life together" in paragraph 1 probably mean?

In 2012, he and his family were inspired to build and donate a bunk bed, one bed on top of the other, after learning there were local children who slept on the floor. Shocked to discover how widespread this need was in his community, Mickelson founded Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit that builds and delivers beds to children in need.Born and raised in Idaho, Mickelson, now 41, had a thriving career. He coached his kids’ sports teams and fished in the nearby river. But when he met children who were sleeping on the floor, his peaceful life changed course.Using safety guidelines and his daughter’s bunk bed as a model, Mickelson started buying wood and supplies to build beds with his own money. He recruited friends and family members to help around the holiday. As word spread, interest and involvement from his and other communities flooded—along with Mickelson’s bunk bed output. “That first project, we built 11 bunk beds in my garage,” he said. “The next year, we did 15. Then it doubled every year. In 2017, we built 612 bunk beds.”With the motto “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town”, the nonprofit and its more than 65 branches have built and delivered more than 1,500 free beds to children across America. But along with the rapid growth, Mickelson was faced with a tough choice: advancing his career or his nonprofit. He chose the latter and went from making “great money to zero money”. He’s never looked back. “I found that the need I have isn’t financial,” he said. “The need I have is seeing the joy on kids’ faces, knowing that I can make a difference.”4. They volunteered to buy beds with their own money.7. What is Mickelson’s attitude to the nonprofit?A. AmbiguousB. Defensive.C. Cautious.D. Positive.CLearning how to face silence in conversation is an important skill especially when working across cultures. In international negotiations, experienced negotiator (谈判者) stay silent and impassive on purpose because that will make others feel uncomfortable and possibly make compromises without having to do anything. Americans especially can’t stand silence, so they often are the first to break the silence and sometimes might be at a disadvantage in negotiations. So what’s the best response? Set your jaw and wait it out. Don’t offer a compromise just because theyare not speaking. If you have to say something, ask a direct question, such as “What’s your initial reaction to that offer?” Once a silence is getting into 45 seconds you could say, “Let’s come back to that in a minute and go on with the next part of our negotiation.”In presentations, silence can be far more effective than dramatic passion (热情). Before starting, look at the audie nce and be silent for a moment because that says, “I’m in control. I know what I’m doing. I’m confident.”A classic example was when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs launched the first iPhone. He introduced with many pauses so that you didn’t miss his key point s. Because silence makes us nervous, our natural reaction is that we’d better pay attention, there’s something going on here.Equally, when giving a speech to staff or trainees, pauses count-especially if there are negatives. If you keep talking you’re spoon feeding. Give people a moment of silence to get beyond the emotional response and to start thinking consciously and processing.Silence can be an inward-focused thoughtful activity or an outward stillness where you give yourself the time to watch and think and listen to the world around you. Having observed the use of silence in Finland and also among the Blackfeet Nation, a North American Indian tribe in northern Montana in the US, we can see benefits far beyond wheeling and dealing.Silence can be a very powerful point for understanding ourselves, understanding others, for developing better common understanding and more productive outcomes and that applies to business, politics, education, law, medicine, every area of human life.8. What is most likely to be Americans idea?A. Speaking less gives the upper handB. The shorter talking gaps are, the better.C. A silent man is the best one to listen toD. Speak out what you have in your mind.9. What is the purpose of the example of Steve Jobs?A. To show the wisdom of Steve Jobs.B. To explain silence can be more effective.C. To introduce how to make a presentation.D. To prove silence can ease one’s nervousness.10. What is the meaning of the underlined words “spoon feeding” in Paragraph 6?A. Supporting some person with any selfless help.B. Feeding somebody patiently with a small spoon.C. Giving others some new ideas to think over carefully.D. Using a way that discourages independent thought.11. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Silence is the best defense.B. Silence in negotiations is of great help.C. Learning the skills about silence is important.D. Silence has different meanings in difficult culture.DBritish people work some of the longest hours in Europe, but are among the least productive. Now some companies are shortening the working week to increase efficiency, health and happiness.Rich Leigh has introduced a four-day week at his PR company. In fact, his entire company has Friday off, because his firm has adopted a four-day week. It is one of a handful of UK businesses that now operate like this: staff still get paid their previous five-day salary, but they work a day less. The company found that they achieved just as much—and there were even sighs of growth. “The key to the scheme’s success,” Leigh says, “is how happy our employees now are.”The average British worker takes only a 34 minute lunch break and works 10 hours overtime each week (more often than not this is unpaid). Yet UK productivity falls seriously behind their European neighbors, who tend to work fewer hours.British working practices have caused loss and damage to the nation’s health and happiness. More than half a million workers in the UK were signed off with work-related stress or anxiety last year. Moreover, the work landscape itself is changing. Automation and AI will have a significant impact on the labor market, where unsteady work becomes more common.Britain is the only EU member that allows workers to ignore the EU working time limit and work longer ho urs. For campaigners, now is the time for a change. O’Grady, an advocate, argues that where businesses have increased their profits as a result of automation, success should be shared with workers in the form of reduced hours. “It’s time to share the benef its from new technology, not allowing those at the top to grab them for themselves.” she says.12. We can learn from the passage that ________.A. British people are the least productive in the worldB. Most companies in Britain have conducted a four-day weekC. PR company has witnessed a rise in employees’ happinessD. British people work longer and get more payment than other countries13. Which is the proper description of British working practices?A. The working time of British workers is within the EU limit.B. In terms of productivity, Britain is beaten by the United States.C. Profits gained from new technology are on the decrease.D. Automation and AI are likely to cause an instable work market.14. Which can be inferred from O’Grady’ s words in the last paragraph?A. It’s time for employers to share the increased profits created by automation.B. Workers should benefit from automation in the form of less working hours.C. New technology should belong to both businesses and workers.D. Businesses can’t make more profits without new technology.15. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To introduce some British firms’ switch to a four-day working week.B. To explain the reasons why British workers suffer stress and anxiety.C. To appeal for more reasonable working conditions.D. To present the current productivity problem in Britain.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
