Pre-questions

1. Have you ever judge by name/ appearance/ dress?

Do you confess it is a prejudice? Can people be free from such superficial notions?

2. Why do the prejudices prevail among us? What’s the function of dress?

(Dress serves as a symbol to suggest that you are culturally acceptable in these civilized settings. It also reveals your social status, economic status, taste of beauty etc.)

3. How would you respond to the prejudice?

4. According to Para. 3, what’s the function of one’s name? Why do people judge by name?

5. According to Para. 8, what’s the writer’s suggest concerning the stereotype of name?

6. List out the five examples to illustrate that name may invite prejudice positively or negatively.

Translation:

名字会招徕偏见,因为名字在识别人的同时附带特殊的映像。正如我们对他人有基于姓名的偏见,我们也以貌取人。我们得承认这种浅薄的观念显然在我们当中盛行。根据最近进行的一项调查显示,持有偏见的人可能在某种程度上觉得不自在,或困惑,但是他们不会内疚。

Names would invite prejudice because they are attached to specific images while identifying people. As we project name-based stereotype on others, so do we judge others by appearance. We have to Confess, the superficial notion apparently prevails among us. According to a survey conducted recently, people sticking with the prejudice may feel ill at ease, or confused, to some extent, but they are free from guilty.

One of my acquaintances, who felt confident to be qualified, was turned

down when applying for a job. Without despair, he took his failure seriously, went to the great length to refine his appearance, and substituted an elegant suit for inappropriate jeans. The former reserved talent turned out to be prominent among his associates. Undoubtedly his change conveyed positive, if limited information to others, and led to his succeed.
