despite(= in spite of )是介词,后面可跟名词、名词短语、V-ing、或the fact that。

例如:She came to the meeting despite/ in spite of her serious illness.尽管病得很重,她还是来参加了会议。

despite与although的区别although是连词,“尽管、虽然”的意思,后面跟句子,构成让步状语从句。

例如:Although she was ill, she came to the meeting. 尽管她病了,但还是来参加了会议。

2. remain意为“保持、仍然是、依旧是”。

(1) 作系动词,“保持;仍然是;依旧是”的意思,后接形容词、名词等作表语,指某人或某物仍保持某种状态。

例如:She remained silent. 她保持沉默。

(接形容词)It remained a secret. 这仍然是个秘密。

(接名词)(2) 作不及物动词,remain“剩下、余下、遗留”,例如:它们中的一些已经消亡,然而另外一些今天仍然存在。

remain“留下、停留、呆在”,相当于“stay”。

例如:由于天气晴朗,孩子们继续呆在室外嬉戏。

3. pay off 意为“成功、奏效”。

pay off“还清、成功、奏效”,例如:After all these years, we’ve at last paid off all our debts. 经过这么多年,我们总算把债还清了。
