They made cute little squeaking noises while drinking their milk. One kitten even fell asleep in my arms after getting a full tummy! My heart melted into a puddle.Part of my job was also to help clean out the small animal cages - you know, like for bunnies, hamsters, guinea pigs and such. I swept out the bedding, gave them fresh food and water, and made sure their living areas were all nice and clean. Those little critters may be small but man can they make a mess! I didn't mind though, keeping them happy and comfy was worth a bit of work.At the end of our volunteer time, Sarah brought out some pet treats that had been donated to the shelter. Let me tell you all about them!One of my favorite things is the School Garden Club. A bunch of us get together once a week after school to take care of the vegetable garden behind the cafeteria. We pull weeds, waterthe plants, and even get to harvest some of the veggies when they're ready. Last year, I grew the biggest tomato ever! The cafeteria ladies use the vegetables we grow to make healthy meals for us. It's so awesome to eat food that you helped grow yourself.Another great club is the Recycling Rangers. We go around the school every Friday collecting bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard from the classrooms to be recycled. We have special blue bins that everyone uses. It's important to recycle so we can take care of our planet. My friend Jacob is the best recycling ranger - he never misses a can or bottle! At the end of the year, the class that recycles the most gets a pizza party. My class won last year and it was the best day ever.But my very favorite activity is being a Reading Buddy. Once a week, a few of us older kids get paired up with one of the kindergarten or first grade students. We spend an hour reading books together and working on their reading skills. The little kids just light up with excitement to have a "big kid" reading partner. I remember when I was that age, I thought the reading buddies were sooo cool. It makes me feel really good to help out the younger students. My reading buddy this year is named Lily andshe's absolutely adorable. Her favorite books are the Puppy Pals series.There are also lots of other volunteer activities at my school like the Safety Patrol team who helps kids cross the street safely, the Office Helpers who answer phones and do tasks for the front office staff, and the Classroom Assistants who help teachers setup for activities. No matter what, there's something for everyone to get involved with.Volunteering teaches us super important lessons about being a good citizen, helping others, and taking care of our community and environment. I'm really glad my school provides so many opportunities for kids to volunteer from an early age. Not only is it fun, but it makes me feel happy and proud to give back.
