"Historically,Asian elephants used to live in many parts of the country.Migration is in their nature. It helps the species expand its territory and have more chances to improve its gene pool by mating with different groups," he said. The forestry department and the provincial government plan to develop a national park, which aims to provide habitat protection for the elephants and a balanced relationship with residents.29.Which of the following is True?______A. Elephants return from the journey.CAlthough the weather is very hot now,the carnival of ice and snow is getting closer. The preparation work for Beijing Winter Olympic Games, which are expected to begin on Feb 4,2022,has entered its final stage. In January,2021,the ice-making work on the Ice Ribbon,a landmark venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics, was completed. In the Winter Olympics, where races can be won or lost by a small-time gap, tiny imperfections in the ice can make a big difference. "It's not just a hunk of ice like you'd normally think of,like ice cubes sitting in your freezer," told Kenneth Golden,a US mathematician who studies the structures of ice. "It's a much more fascinating and complex substance than people would normally think."The first step for building any ice rink is to purify the water to remove dissolved solids like salts and minerals.Such impurities don't fit in the regular hexagonal(六边形的)structure of ice that forms as water freezes. The purer the water is,the more consistent the ice surface. In addition to the need for excellence in the raw materials of ice-making,technology is also very important. As one of the most advanced technologies for winter sports venues,a carbon dioxide (CO2)cooling technology has been applied on a large scale for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.CO2 is not new when it comes to ice-making.However,it has been gradually replaced by the man-made refrigerant(制冷剂)like Freon. With increasing attention toward climate change, the old refrigerant has come into use again. As an element of the atmosphere,CO2 doesn't damage the ozone layer.Although CO2 is a greenhouse gas,its greenhouse effect is much lower than that of other man-maderefrigerants.The Winter Olympics venues adopted CO2 instead of Freon as a refrigerant in ice-making,which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions greatly."We believe these technological innovations will bring Beijing 2022 to spectators all over the world in a more impressive way," told Gao Bo from the Media Operations Department of the Organizing Committee of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.33.What is the result of impurities in water for ice-making?______A. The water isn't able to freeze completely.B. The quality of the ice will be affected.C. The ice surface will be more consistent.D. It's likely for athletes to fall on the ice.34.Why has CO2 cooling technology been applied for the Winter Olympic Games?______A. It's the most advanced technologies for ice-making.B. CO2 is more efficient than other refrigerants.C. CO2 is more environmentally-friendly than Freon.D. CO2 has already existed in the atmosphere.35.What is Gao's attitude to CO2 being applied to ice-making?______A. Unclear.B. Opposed.C. Doubtful.D. Favourable.36.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?______A. The Beijing Winter Olympic Games Is Coming.B. Beneath Olympic Ice.C. The Use of Refrigerants in Olympic Games.D. The Structure of Ice.四、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共12.5分)A study session with friends can be an excellent way to learn. If you make it a regular event (e.g.weekly),a study session can help you to fully understand difficult material, prepare for exams, and finally earn strong grades.By making careful choices when you are forming the group, you can be sure your study session with friends will be successful.• Teach one another. One of the most effective(有效的)ways to learn is actually to teach other people. But if you take the time to actually examine your anger instead of just “feeling” angry, you’ll have a better understanding of yourself. Knowing why you feel so angry can provide you with some surprising answers. These answers can enable you to suddenly grow spiritually and mentally.I can give you a personal example. I went to a meeting once and I was verbally attacked over an application I supported at my workplace. Various people went on and on about how terrible this system was and that it never worked. New analysis of the arm bones of Lucy, an early hominid, suggests she was a tree climber. Lucy’s remains were uncovered in Ethiopia in the 1970s, with the 3.18 million-year-old skeleton(骨骼)being the most complete of any upright, walking human ancestor. Since she was discovered, researchers have debated whether she spent her life in the trees or spent time walking on the plains as well. The new evidence from scans of her arm bones proves she spent time climbing and used her arms to pull herself up. The scans were compared with cross sections of humans and chimpanzees, which spend a mixture of time in trees and walking on all fours on the ground. They found that the arm bones were more heavily built, similar to those of chimps, while her lower limbs(下肢)would have meant she walked less efficiently than modern humans. Professor John Kappelman, atUniversityofTexas, believes the advantage of his study was that it focused on characteristics that reflect actual behavior during life, suggesting that evenwhen Lucy walked upright, she may have done so less efficiently than modern humans, limiting her ability to walk long distances on the ground.Previous studies suggested that Lucy was just 4 feet tall and weighed just 65 pounds. Combining the new data paints a picture of an ancestor who may have spent a great amount of her time in trees. It also expands on evidence from earlier this year which claimed that Lucy may have died from a fall, most likely from a tree. The evidence suggests Lucy may have spent time on the ground, returning to the safety of the trees for food and to sleep, to avoid her enemies.4. What did the researchers argue about after Lucy was discovered?A. Where she lived.B. How long she lived.C. What she ate.D. How she worked.5. How could people tell Lucy spent time climbing?A. By her walking style.B. By her heavily built arm bones.C. By her strong lower limbs.D. By her large cross sections.6. When Lucy walked, she may________.A. have walked with bigger stepsB. have walked at a faster speedC. have walked more efficiently than usD. have walked a shorter distance than us7. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Guesses about Lucy’s characteristics.B. Some evidence of Lucy’s health.C. The safety of Lucy.D. The ancestor of Lucy.CSometimes people make history. George Washington became the first president of theUnited Statesand made history. Sometimes wars make history. The two World Wars are examples. Sometimes nature even becomes part of history. Shaking earthquakes are recorded in history books.Sixteen years ago, nature caused just such a history-making event. In September 2005, Hurricane Katrina came ashore inNew Orleans,Louisiana. The deadly storm floodedNew Orleans. Before Katrina, no other big American city had ever flooded in the history of the country. This natural disaster caused great harm and death.New Orleansis located below sea level. This location places it at great risk. Levees were built to protectNew Orleansfrom the ocean. (A levee is like a wall between the city and the ocean.) When Hurricane Katrina came ashore, water moved over the levees into the city. Flooding made it necessary for everyone to leave the city. Before Katrina, Creole food (a special kind of cooking only inLouisiana) filled the air with delicious smells. The sound of jazz music traveled through the streets. Now the city has to return to its former glory. Before Katrina, ernment had never made everyone leave a city. People inNew Orleanshad to find shelter quickly. Some had to stay at theSuperdomeSportsCenter. Some rode on buses to other towns. Thousands drove their cars to get away from the storm. The roads and shelters filled up fast. The lesson learned from Katrina was that cities must be better prepared for big storms and other terrible disasters caused by nature. Being prepared might have kept more people safe. Hurricane Katrina is one of the history-making events that will be remembered forever. Today, history is still being made that will shape the future.8. What does the author tell us aboutNew Orleans?A. It was built above sea level.B. It had few jazz musicians after Katrina.C. It was the firstU.S.city that had been flooded.D. It created a wholly new way to cook after Katrina.9. What can we say about the levees?A. They were almost useless for fighting Katrina.B. They helped people leaveNew Orleansquickly.C. They made NewOrleansa special American city.D. They should be built to match the size ofNew Orleans.10. What does this mean? I don’t know. But when I overhear my students speaking to each other, I am often similarly confused.I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age — 18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked into my class, my students were chatting happily with each other. One of their comments caught my ear: “Venmo it to me.” I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked. The good-natured students were happy to explain it to me, and in return I nodded with an awkward expression, as if I should have known better.I went home that evening, absorbed in that moment of noncomprehension (不理解). I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awaken from a five-year nap, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn’t understand the language.Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations. But what will happen if my interest wanes and that the language ship finally disappears over the horizon? The answer, to me, is clear: Klaatu Barada Nikto.24.What did the author probably meet with?A.Hearing loss.B.Cultural shock.C.A language barrier.D.A frightening robot.25.What makes the author fall behind in language?A.Learning needs.B.Teaching tasks.C.Age difference.D.Language abuse.26.What does the author think of language change?A.It is entirely avoidable.B.It is really small.C.It is verybeneficial.D.It is much too rapid.27.What does the underlined word “wanes” mean in the last paragraph?A.Lessens.B.Grows.C.Happens.D.Focuses.Recently, research on how a new virtual (虚拟的) reality (VR) experience educated primary children about the fire disasters was done. It was developed by the University of South Australia, aiming to educate children to learn how to be safer in a fire.Focusing on children aged 10-12 years old, the new VR experience presents a situation where children are tasked to look after a friend’s dog just before a fire event begins to spread. They participate in a series of problem-solving activities to help save and protect themselves and the dog.The findings showed that more than 80 percent of children reported that they felt more confident to calmly assess the situation and make wise decisions to protect themselves from a fire. This isl especially important considering that 91 percent of participants originally lacked any knowledge of fires, and that 67 percent had said that they were too young to make safety decisions in a fire. The researchers believed such immersive (沉浸式的) VR experiences had real potential (潜力) to attract and educate the young. “As children born in digital times, they are interested in such technology and they can experience events realistically yet within the safe environment.” said Delene Weber, one of the researchers. “Well-designed VR can provide a chance for children to apply newly-acquired knowledge, strengthen their learnt concepts, and enable immediate reaction—all incredibly valuable learning tools.”Meanwhile, because children have fewer life experiences, aren’t as physically strong, and are less likely to have learned much about fire safety, they’re often most at risk. Yet theability for children to contribute to fire safety at their household should not be underestimated (低估).“Children do not need to be passively attacked by disasters and with purpose-built virtual reality experiences such as these, we can help children understand the risks and realize they can help,” said Weber.28.How does the new VR experience try to educate children?A.By introducing a virtual friend to them.B.By finding the causes of a fire event.C.By letting them solve virtual problems.D.By guiding them to ask a dog for help. 29.What did the result of the research about VR experiences show?A.Many children found it hard to adapt to them.B.They helped children deal with fire postively.C.They benefited children with knowledge of animals.D.Most children had a misunderstanding about them.30.What is Weber’s attitude towards the new VR experiences?A.Doubtful.B.Indifferent.C.Disapproving.D.Supportive. 31.What can be the most suitable title for the text?A.VR experiences educate kids to survive a fire B.VR experiences make learning easier for kidsC.VR education appeals to the young generation D.VR technology makes no sense in fighting a fire.Dr. Degenaar came into the lecture room on the first Friday morning of the term and asked us to write down our own understanding of the “soul”. Here was the “teacher” asking us what we thought — it was really an exciting experience. He was not telling us what he thought but asking us how we saw something. The following discussion was interesting. That was my first experience of real learning in a classroom.Almost 50 years have passed since that experience. Of the other lecturers who “taught” me during that year, I remember they “taught” me the history of Greek philosophy (哲学), but I remember little of that history and nothing of those lecturers. And most of what I remember about Greek philosophy is what I learned in Dr. Degenaar’s class, for my own interest.I took further courses with Dr. Degenaar in the following years. Lake the first class, there was little “lecturing” at us, but far more involvement (参与) of us all in a process ofcommon discovery in which we learned a lot about each other and the key points of the day. The excitement of discovery stays with me. Then it took me almost another 20 years to get a deeper understanding of what had happened in that lecture hall: experiential learning.Traditionally, learners have been seen as “empty containers” waiting to be “filled” with learning given them by the teacher. The learner is, therefore, dependent on the teacher for what to think and how to think. Compliance (遵从) is rewarded and so independent and original thinking is not developed. In comparison, in experiential learning, the learner is encouraged to think for himself/herself not to repeat the thought patterns of the teacher. The learning happens not because of what a “teacher” or “lecturer” says but because of what the learner does. In this sense, I think this is the best way to learn and everyone should try it and learn from it. 32.Which word best describes the author’s first Greek philosophy class?A.Boring.B.Amazing.C.Confusing.D.Depressing. 33.Why does the author compare Dr. Degenaar and the other lecturers?A.To praise Dr. Degenaar’s attitude to his job.B.To stress Dr. Degenaar’s great influence on him.C.To point out Dr. Degenaar’s popularity among students.D.To show the author’s deep interest in Greek philosophy.34.How does experiential learning differ from traditional learning?A.It has no specific learning places.B.It applies knowledge to medical care.C.It encourages independent thinking.D.It focuses more on the result of learning. 35.What is the text mainly about?A.A respected teacher.B.A favorite university lesson.C.The factors of experiential learning.D.An effective learning method. There are so many ways to explore in regard to finding new happiness.
