Summarize British Foreign Relations
• The UK has diplomatic or consular relations with 169 countries and is a member of some 120 international organizations, including the United Nations (UN), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization1 (NATO) and the European Union (EU). It is one of the world’s leading trading nations and its foreign investments are among the largest in the world. It has worldwide interests because it has 13 dependent territories and several million British citizens living overseas.

• Member of NATO
– North Atlantic Treaty Organization – headquarters in Brussels, Belgium – constitutes a system of collective defense whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.

• The UK used to be a great empire before the Second World War.

• In fact, although the two countries do generally enjoy a good relationshi p, particularly since World War II. • However, Britain’s “special relationship” with the USA has gone through many ups and downs. The major test of Anglo-American relations occurred during the 1956 Suez Crisis. • There were 63 American military bases in Britain (now the number is decreasing). The military presence of the USA in the UK shows the weakness of the UK defense capacity and its status in diplomacy as well.

• Britain is no longer a superpower, but it still has great influence in both economy and military in the world. • British foreign policy influenced mainly by its history and geopolitical traits. Another major factor is the US, since British special relationship with the US. • Britain sits at a very important seat in many international institutions, such as the UN, the EU, etc. • Britain is one of the strongest countries in military in the world.

•But many former colonies like Canada and Australia had been granted their political independence .so ,the end of the British Empire left the UK a medium-sized European country. The UK is no longer what it used to be.

• The UK has its own independent nuclear weapons capacity. • It spends more on defense than most other advanced industrial countries. • It is the third largest spender in the world and is ranked fifth or sixth in terms of its military power. • It is a member of the nuclear club and a little brother in the nuclear superpowers. • It is also spends money on civil defense which is a significant part in its security.
