Thomas YoungThe Last True Know-It-AllA Thomas Young (1773-1829) contributed 63 articles to the Encyclopedia Britannica, including 46 biographical entries (mostly on scientists and classicists) and substantial essays on "Bridge,” "Chromatics," "Egypt," "Languages" and "Tides". Was someone who could write authoritatively about so many subjects a polymath, a genius or a dilettante? In an ambitious new biography, Andrew Robinson argues that Young is a good contender for the epitaph "the last man who knew everything." Young has competition, however: The phrase, which Robinson takes for his title, also serves as the subtitle of two other recent biographies: Leonard Warren's 1998 life of paleontologist Joseph Leidy (1823-1891) and Paula Findlen's 2004 book on Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), another polymath.B Young, of course, did more than write encyclopedia entries. He presented his first paper to the Royal Society of London at the age of 20 and was elected a Fellow a week after his21st birthday. In the paper, Young explained the process of accommodation in the human eye on how the eye focuses properly on objects at varying distances. Young hypothesized that this was achieved by changes in the shape of the lens.Young also theorized that light traveled in waves and he believed that, to account for the ability to see in color, there must be three receptors in the eye corresponding to the three "principal colors" to which the retina could respond:red, green, violet. All these hypothesis were subsequently proved to be correct.C Later in his life, when he was in his forties, Young was instrumental in cracking the code that unlocked the unknown script on the Rosetta Stone, a tablet that was "found" in Egypt by the Napoleonic army in 1799. The stone contains text in three alphabets: Greek, something unrecognizable and Egyptian hieroglyphs. The unrecognizable script is now known as demotic and, as Young deduced, is related directly to hieroglyphic. His initial work on this appeared in his Britannica entry on Egypt. In another entry, he coined the term Indo-European to describe the family of languages spoken throughout most of Europe and northern India. These are the landmark achievements of a man who was a child prodigy and who, unlike many remarkable children, did not disappear into oblivion as an adult.D Born in 1773 in Somerset in England, Young lived from an early age with his maternal grandfather, eventually leaving to attend boarding school. He had devoured books from the age of two, and through his own initiative he excelled at Latin, Greek, mathematics and natural philosophy. After leaving school, he was greatly encouraged by his mother's uncle, Richard Brocklesby, a physician and Fellow of the Royal。

While the positive side of the phenomenon is lauded by these elderly people, I would argue that its drawbacks deserve more attention.Indeed, it is easy to understand why more and more old people choose to live away from the next generation. In a fast-paced society where emotional bonds between family members are ever waning, the very problem that plagues the older generation is the loneliness and sense of isolation due to the lack of communication with their loved ones, who are usually entangled with work and therefore cannot afford much time and stamina to accompany their parents. In this sense, apartments for the retired are a place where the old can have opportunities to mix with hundreds of like-minded people, thus relieving their feeling of desolation.Despite the benefit mentioned above, this phenomenon of retired people living on their own could be considered from an opposite angle. Those exponents of this tendency are oblivious to its underlying disadvantages, among which the very issue that concerns me most is its impact on the already frayed family bond: instead of anchoring their hope on some strangers to light up their twilight years, many old people exacerbate the estrangement with their adult children by moving out, which might even lead to further misunderstanding between family members. Another apprehension we cannot afford to ignore is the financial pressure. To living by themselves in retirement apartments inevitably leads to higher living cost for those relying on pensions: they have to pay extra for rent, food, and other household services, which used to be covered by their adult children when they lived together. In conclusion, it looks to me that a life in retirement communities might not be as pleased as some old people have expected.

Task 1:The bar chart below shows the changes of the number (thousands) of four kinds of students in the UK in the years 1980, 1990 and 2005.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.范文The column chart depicts the number of four categories of pupils in the United Kingdom in the years 1980, 1990 and 2005. The data recorded on the vertical axis is measured in “thousands”and the horizontal in the years, whether male or female, and lastly, if full or part-time learners.Overall, an upward trend was recorded in all groupings except one, males in part-time study which dripped. Furthermore, in 2005 these figures rose dramatically, outpacing recorded growth with more female students at the survey’s end.In 1980 the data had little difference with full-time males and females at about 200,000, yet part-time males recorded a figure double that of females, at 180,000. This changed moderately in 1990, where full-time males jumped to 300,000, while part-time males plummeted to just 100,000, approximately half that of 1980. In contrast, female figures both rose moderately beating previous data. However, 2005 saw dramatic gains across the board, with female full-time education soaring to a peak of 820,000 and part-time at 800,000, respectively, edging out the males in the order of 20,000 respectively.12月7日Task 2:Nowadays some older people choose to live in the retirement communities with other people , rather than living with their adult children. Is it a positive or negative development?Fundamental changes have taken place in society, none more so than how the elderly are taken care of in their autumn years. Whilst in the past, senior citizens were looked after by their offspring, now, this is not always the case. Instead, some are opting for retirement homes and villages. Whether this is a benefit or drawback needs to be examined on a case-y-case basis as one size does not fit all.On the one hand, it is said that blood is thicker than water. Many believe that mature sons and daughters bear a social responsibility for the care and welfare of their aging parents. Moreover, these obligations are better served by the people who are known and trusted. This arrangement is far better than being in the dubious care and company of total strangers. In addition, retirement villages are not usually cheap and they can place a substantial financial strain on the retirees. On the other hand, retirement homes can offer a wide range of stimulating activities for their guests. An older person, who has lost his or her life partner is now living in the company of people alike. Furthermore, sharing life experiences, by taking trips down “Memory Lane” can be therapeutic for many. Furthermore, most such retirement centers have trained nurses on call 24/7, offering a higher level of care. Older people need health services more frequently in their twilight years. In conclusion, I believe that retirement needs to be appraised on the unique merits of the situation at hand. After careful consideration of all the factors, the retirees and family can make an informed decision, so as all to enjoy life, and live it to the full.12月14日Task 1:The bar chart below shows percentages of three groups of Australian children taking part in four kinds of activities in 2012.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. The bar chart illustrates the age influence on Australian children’s preference to four types of leisure activities in 2012.Overall, the age influence on Australian children’s preferences to all activities was not significant. In result, the ranking of their popularities remained similar regardless of the changes in ages, yet the differences between them became larger as children grew older.Biking was the only activity whose participation rate (approximately 65%) for the 9-to-11-year-olds was lower than those for the other two age groups: about 75% for the 5-to-8-year-olds and 85% for the 12-to-16-year-olds.The participation rate of art was negatively correlated to ages. Only 60% of the 5-to-8-year-olds took part in it, while this figure was down to 55% for the 9-to-qq-year-olds and no record for the oldest ones, ranking the least popular across the ages.By contrast, children showed a stronger willingness to watch TV and read as they were older. Climbing continuously from 90% to nearly 100%, the participation rates of the former were the highest in all age groups, while the latter’s grew marginally from some 65% to 70%.12月14日Task 2:Today in many countries people are living in a “throw-away” society where things are used for a short time and then thrown away. What do you think is the cause and what problems will it lead to?The throwaway society, a rather contemporary terminology which describes people’s tendency of discarding goods only after a short life cycle, is not novel to most of the residents in economically developed area these days. From my perspective, two main factors prompt this quickly-spreading but worrisome social phenomenon. The significant boost in manufacturing productivity attributed to continuous technological breakthroughs is the first and foremost stimulus. Mass production and automatic assembly lines installed in most factories nowadays substantially increase the outputs and thus, lower the cost of consumer goods. As a result, throwing away used products and buying new ones can be much cheaper and more convenient for families leading a busy urban life. In addition, the fact that many commodities are upgraded rapidly due to the fast-changing trends and technological advancement is another contributor. Fashionable items, such as clothes and accessories, are a perfect example to show contemporary people’s attitudes. On the top of that, new models of electronic devices with the latest functions are launched into the market once every few months. In order to benefit from these new features, customers are often “forced”tor “tempted”to change their smart phones or tablets, for example, more frequently than before even when they are still perfectly functioning. The detrimental impact on the environment and the waste of natural resources are the two most direct consequences of this trend. A large amount of domestic waste is inevitably generated daily. Even though some can be recycled assuming that household garbage classification is effectively implemented in most communities, more landfills are still needed, let alone the potential threat posed by non-biodegradable rubbish, such as plastic bags. Meanwhile, soaring water resource and fossil fuels are consumed to meet the high demand for consumer goods, draining the earth in an astonishing speed. In summary, for the survival of humanity in the future, it is high time to give serious consideration to this current problem. Eradicating the “throw-away” culture in modern society is an effective first step.12月21日Task 1:The table gives information about students’opinions on different aspects of courses they attended in a university in 2012. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Percentage of students rating aspects of their courses as “Very Good”范文The table shows how students feel about a variety of aspects of courses they took in university in 2012.Among the three given courses, the aspect of business earned more appreciation from the students than the other two. In terms of teaching quality and tutor support, the rating as “very good” reached 93% and 96% respectively, which were the highest compared with computing and maths. The percentage of satisfactory comments for course content and resources were also higher than average level. As a contrast, the rating for the aspect of computing as “very good”was lower than average concerning pre-course information (61%), tutor support (85%) and course content (69%). The students also did not think highly about the teaching quality and resources. The number of students who were satisfied with the pre-course information of the maths course was slightly more than business and computing. However, the teaching quality was only recognized by 64% of the students, which were much less than those of business and computing. The situation was similar for resources. All in all, business was the most welcomed course among the students. Besides, among the five categories, students are more satisfied with the teaching quality and tutor support than the others.12月21日Task 2:Today many people spend less and less time in their homes. What are the reasons and what are the effects of this trend on individuals and society?范文Currently, there are soaring number of people spending less time with family members compared to the past and there are numerous reasons for this social phenomenon. From my point view, study and work may be main reasons that keep people away from their homes. The increasing students have to attend extra lessons after school to prepare for exams, which costs much of their spare time. Meanwhile, adults usually need to work for a long time. In order to finish their tasks in time, they have no choice but work overtime, which makes them impossible to spend time in their homes. Besides, people often live far away from their workplaces, so they need to spend for over one hour commuting on subways or buses, which results in declining home time for employees.Such trend may have negative effects on people as well as the whole society. Employees do not have enough time for them to stay with their family members because of the heavy work load, which is harmful to the establishment of family bonds. Children may lack their busy parents’company and guide in the process of their growth, which would contribute to some behavior problems like anxiousness and peer stress. Furthermore, adverse outcomes would also appear in the society. Since people stay outside for a long time, which may put heavy burdens on the public transportation, leading to traffic jams, safety issues and so on.In conclusion, although people can broaden their horizons through going out their homes, they are often busy with work or study burdens. Such situation would cause the reduction of people’s happiness level, and contributes negative effects on people and society.。

It was uncharacteristically low-key for the industry’s greatest showman. But the essay published this week by Steve Jobs, the boss of Apple, on his firm’s website under the unassuming title “Thoughts on Music” has nonetheless provoked a vigorous debate about the future of digital music, which Apple dominates with its iPod music-player and iTunes music-store. At issue is “digital rights management” (DRM)—the technology guarding downloaded music against theft. Since there is no common standard for DRM, it also has the side-effect that songs purchased for one type of music-player may not work on another. Apple’s DRM system, called FairPlay, is the most widespread. So it came as a surprise when Mr. Jobs called for DRM for digital music to be abolished.B. This is a change of tack for Apple. It has come under fire from European regulators who claim that its refusal to license FairPlay to other firms has “locked in” customers. Since music from the iTunes store cannot be played on non-iPod music-players (at least not without a lot of fiddling), any iTunes buyer will be deterred from switching to a device made by a rival firm, such as Sony or Microsoft. When French lawmakers drafted a bill last year compelling Apple to open up FairPlay to rivals, the company warne d of “state-sponsored piracy”. Only DRM, it implied, could keep the pirates at bay.C. This week Mr. Jobs gave another explanation for his former defence of DRM: the record companies made him do it. They would make their music available to the iTunes store only if Apple agreed to protect it using DRM. They can still withdraw their catalogues if the DRM system is compromised. Apple cannot license FairPlay to others, says Mr Jobs, because it would depend on them to produce security fixes promptly. All DRM does is restrict consumer choice and provide a barrier to entry, says Mr Jobs; without it there would be far more stores and players, and far more innovation. So, he suggests, why not do away with DRM and sell music unprotected? “This is clearly the best alternative for consumers,” he declares, “and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat.”D. Why the sudden change of heart? Mr Jobs seems chiefly concerned with getting Europe’s regulators off his back. Rather than complaining to Apple about its use of DRM, he suggests, “those unhappy with the current situation should redirect their energies towards persuading the music companies to sell their music DRM-free.” Two and a half of the four big record companies, he helpfully points out, are European-owned. Mr Jobs also hopes to paint himself as a consumer champion. Apple resents accusations that it has become the Microsoft of digital music.E. Apple can afford to embrace open competition in music players and online stores. Consumers would gravitate to the best player and the best store, and at the moment that still means Apple’s. Mr Jobs is evidently unfazed by rivals to the iPod. Since only 3% of the music in a typical iTunes library is protected, most of it can already be used on other players today, he notes. (And even the protected tracks can be burned onto a CD and then re-ripped.) So Apple’s dominance evidently depends far more on branding and ease of use than DRM-related “lock in”.F. The music giants are trying DRM-free downloads. Lots of smaller labels already sell music that way. Having seen which way the wind is blowing, Mr Jobs now wants to be seen not as DRM’s defender, but as a consumer champion who helped in its downfall. Wouldn’t it lead to a surge in piracy? No, because most music is still sold unprotected on CDs, people wishing to steal music already can do so. Indeed, scrapping DRM would probably increase online-music sales by reducing confusion and incompatibility. With the leading online store, Apple would benefit most. Mr Jobs’s argument, in short, is transparently self-serving. It also happens to be right. 6. get off pe rson’s back:不再找某人的麻烦,摆脱某人的纠缠7. gravitate:受吸引,倾向于8. unfazed:不再担忧,不被打扰Questions 1-7Do the following statemets reflect the claims of the writer in Reading Passage 1?Write your answer in Boxes 1-7 on your answer sheet.TRUE if the statement reflets the claims of the writerFALSE if the statement contradicts the claims of the writerNOT GIVEN if it is impossbile to say what the writer thinks about this1. British scientists are preparing to launch trials of a radical new way to fight cancer, which kills tumours by infecting them with viruses like the common cold.2. If successful, virus therapy could eventually form a third pillar alongside radiotherapy and chemotherapy in the standard arsenal against cancer, while avoiding some of the debilitating side-effects.3. Leonard Seymour, a professor of gene therapy at Oxford University, who has been working on the virus therapy with colleagues in London and the US, will lead the trials later this year. Cancer Research UK said yesterday that it was excited by the potential of Prof Seymour’s pioneering techniques.4. One of the country’s leading geneticists, Prof Seymour has been working with viruses that kill cancer cells directly, while avoiding harm to healthy tissue. "In principle, you’ve got something which could be many times more effective than regular chemotherapy," he said.5. Cancer-killing viruses exploit the fact that cancer cells suppress the body’s local immune system. "If a cancer doesn’t do that, the immune system wipes it out. If you can get a virus into a tumour, viruses findthem a very good place to be because there’s no immune system to stop them replicating. You can regard it as the cancer’s Achilles’ heel."6. Only a small amount of the virus needs to get to the cancer. "They replicate, you get a million copies in each cell and the cell bursts and they infect the tumour cells adjacent and repeat the process," said Prof Seymour.7. Preliminary research on mice shows that the viruses work well on tumours resistant to standard cancer drugs. "It’s an interesting possibility that they may have an advantage in killing drug-resistant tumours, which could be quite different to anything we’ve had before."8. Researchers have known for some time that viruses can kill tumour cells and some aspects of the work have already been published in scientific journals. American scientists have previously injected viruses directly into tumours but this technique will not work if the cancer is inaccessible or has spread throughout the body.9. Prof Seymour’s innovative solution is to mask the virus from the body’s i mmune system, effectively allowing the viruses to do what chemotherapy drugs do - spread through the blood and reach tumours wherever they are. The big hurdle has always been to find a way to deliver viruses to tumours via the bloodstream without the body’s immune system destroying them on the way.10. "What we’ve done is make chemical modifications to the virus to puta polymer coat around it - it’s a stealth virus when you inject it," he said.11. After the stealth virus infects the tumour, it replicates, but the copies do not have the chemical modifications. If they escape from the tumour, the copies will be quickly recognised and mopped up by the body’s immune system.12. The therapy would be especially useful for secondary cancers, called metastases, which sometimes spread around the body after the first tumour appears. "There’s an awful statistic of patients in the west ... with malignant cancers; 75% of them go on to die from metastases," said Prof Seymour.13. Two viruses are likely to be examined in the first clinical trials: adenovirus, which normally causes a cold-like illness, and vaccinia, which causes cowpox and is also used in the vaccine against smallpox. Forsafety reasons, both will be disabled to make them less pathogenic in the trial, but Prof Seymour said he eventually hopes to use natural viruses.14. The first trials will use uncoated adenovirus and vaccinia and will be delivered locally to liver tumours, in order to establish whether the treatment is safe in humans and what dose of virus will be needed. Several more years of trials will be needed, eventually also on the polymer-coated viruses, before the therapy can be considered for use in the NHS. Though the approach will be examined at first for cancers that do not respond to conventional treatments, Prof Seymour hopes that one day it might be applied to all cancers.Questions 1-6Do the following statements agree with the information given in the reading passage? For questions 1-6 writeTRUE if the statement agrees with the informationFALSE if the statement contradicts the informationNOT GIVEN if there is no information on this in the passage1.Virus therapy, if successful, has an advantage in eliminatingside-effects.2.Cancer Research UK is quite hopeful about Professor Seymour’s work on the virus therapy.3.Virus can kill cancer cells and stop them from growing again.4.Cancer’s Achilles’ heel refers to the fact that virus may stay safely in a tumor and replicate.5.To infect the cancer cells, a good deal of viruses should be injected into the tumor.6.Researches on animals indicate that virus could be used as a new way to treat drug-resistant tumors.Question 7-9Based on the reading passage, choose the appropriate letter from A-D for each answer.rmation about researches on viruses killing tumor cells can be found(A) on TV(B) in magazines(C) on internet(D) in newspapers8.To treat tumors spreading out in body, researchers try to(A) change the body’ immune system(B) inject chemotherapy drugs into bloodstream.(C) increase the amount of injection(D) disguise the viruses on the way to tumors.9.When the chemical modified virus in tumor replicates, the copies(A) will soon escape from the tumor and spread out.(B) will be wiped out by the body’s immune system.(C) will be immediately recognized by the researchers.(D) will eventually stop the tumor from spreading out.Questions 10-13Complete the sentences below. Last year, a record 33,000 people were killed there. Even more shocking is that more civilians died there last year than in Iraq, which is war-torn. This major criminal activity has arisen because of Mexico's geographic location—it is situated between drug-producing countries in South America and the world's largest drug consumer, the United States. Even if the Mexican government could reduce the level of violence there, it would still face the challenge of establishing a rule of law and a more stable economic base.Passage TwoIt's hard to avoid the conclusion that terrorists' biggest weapon isn't the threat of violence but the ability to sow fear in the minds of the public. Individuals and groups who hold extremist political views or religious beliefs could launch random attacks at any time, making society more fearful of threats and decreasing people's trust in each other and the government's ability to protect them. While attacks by terrorists have led to the deaths of many people, societies' reaction to fear can sometimes cause more damage than the initial attacks themselves.Psychologists have studied the terror of terrorist threats and have found that even those not directly threatened by violence suffer from fear and decreased trust in society.Passage ThreeApril 26 will be the 27th anniversary since the worst nuclear disaster occurred in Chernobyl, Ukraine. Despite the large scale of the disaster and its radiation, there have been far fewer deaths as a result than originally expected. But while relatively few people have died directly because of the radiation, the accident's lasting effects on mental health have been significant. Many people who lived in the area at the time of the disaster suffer from mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Survivors also face discrimination, in both their medical care and their job opportunities. Last week, my sister returned from her long trip abroad and brought back a lot of souvenirs for us.
Nowadays, some older people choose to live in the retirement communities with范文:There is an increasing trend that senior citizens tend to mix with their peers in retirement communities, rather than living under the same roof with their adult children.
