段落是一个比句子层次更高、组织规模更大的翻译单位， 是仅次于篇章的语言层次。如果说篇章是一个较大的、且 具有完整意义的独立语义单位的话，那么段落就是小于篇 章的一个语义单位。就其组织特点而言，段落是一个具有 明确的始末标记的、语义相对完整、交际功能相对独立的 篇章单位，它由连贯的句群或语段构成，具有相对稳定的 结构模式，语义上连贯（ coherence ），结构上相互黏着 （ cohesion ）。一般说来，一个段落可能只含一个句群 （也称作语段 [discourse fragment] ），也可能包含数个 句群，还可能只是一个句子，甚至只是一个词。

在翻译中，段落不仅可以视为一个语义分析单位， 而且甚至可以视为语义的转换单位，因为以段落 为单位来对译出语进行分析，较之以句子为单位 的分析，更能有助于译者对原文作者的意向以及 原文句际之间的逻辑关系的把握，也更有利于译 者对译入语表达方式的整体把握。因此，学习翻 译应该注意将各个翻译层次的单位分析有机地结 合起来，把对句子翻译的把握上升到对段落翻译 的把握，最终上升到对整个篇章翻译的把握。同 时，译者还应弄清英汉两种语言在段落层次上的 异同，把握好翻译的基本方法。只有这样，才能 译好英语段落。
语言学家周祖谟教授最讲究这样去广积学问，他曾 经对学生们说，治学要有根基，要有一般的基本知 识与专科的基本知识。先读基础书，然后兼及其他。 而且，要读全部，不能止于选本。要这样做，自然 得有决心和毅力，在这点上，著名词学家夏承焘先 生有一席恳切的经验之谈，他说：“六十余年间， 如果说在学问方面取得了某些成绩的话，那就是依 靠一个‘笨’字，‘笨’字从本。”学生们按师辈 指点去做，治学的路子是对的。（张舜徽， 1984 年， 5 页） 这一汉语段落告诉我们的中心思想就是： 大学问家 的经验告诉我们，广积学问要靠下决心读书和有毅 力读书。 但这一主题的阐发方式却明显不同于英语 论说文段落模式，汉语的形散神聚，词句的随“意” 自然流动、重文气（气韵）而轻文理（理则）、乃 至断句不严等特点，均可在这一段落中找汉两种语言在段落构成方面存在异同，因此译者必须 明白：在翻译英语段落时进行一定调整变通是十分必要的。 调整变通是两种语言、两种文化的碰撞的结果，也是译者笔 下所形成一种相互妥协。调整变通的这个度应该有多大，得 取决于具体情况。我们既不能一味地让译入语屈从译出语形 式，也不能一味地让译入语迁就译出语，而应尽可能做到适 度调整变通。换言之，英语段落与汉语段落如有相同之处， 就可直译；如有不同之处且直译时译文晦涩难懂就应借助翻 译技巧进行调整变通，让译出语向译入语归化，从而使译文 做到忠实传达原作思想、再现原作风格，表述规范晓畅。值 得指出的是，这种调整变通必须是建构在对段落的宏观把握 层面上的，译者应该从段落乃至整个语篇的层面来看待和处 理其中的所有词语和句子。

段落翻译技巧
由于英译汉过程中我们会遇到很多困难我们必须通过翻译实践，对英汉两种不同语言的特点加以对比、概况和总结，以找出一般的表达规律来，避免出现一些不该出现的翻译错误，而这些表达的规律就是我们所说的翻译技巧。
一、词类转译技巧在英译汉过程中，有些句子可以逐词对译，有些句子则由于英汉两种语言的表达方式不同，就不能逐词对译，只能将词类进行转译之后，方可使译文显得通顺、自然；对词类转译技巧的运用须从四个方面加以注意。
1、转译成动词。
英语中的某些名词、介词、副词，翻译时可转译成汉语中的动词。
