He was raised in Missouri where he worked in his father’s store while attending school. This was his first retailing experience and he really enjoyed it. After graduation, he began his own career as a retail merchant. He soon opened his first Wal-Mart store in1962 inRogers,Arkansas. Wal-Mart specialized in name brands at low prices and Sam Walton was surprised at the success. Soon a chain of Wal-Mart stores sprang up across rural America. Waltonˈs management style was popular with employees and he founded some of the basic concepts of management that are still in use today. After taking the company public in 1970, Walton introduced his “profit sharing plan”. The profit sharing plan was a plan for Wal-Mart employees to improve their income dependent on the profits of the store. Sam Walton believed that “individuals donˈt win, teams do”. Employees at Wal-Mart stores were offered stock options (认股权) and store discounts. These benefits are commonplace today, but Walton was among the first to implement (实现) them. Walton believed that a happy employee meant happy customers and more sales. He also believed that by giving employees a part of the company and making their success dependent on the company’s success, they would care about the company.By the 1980s, Wal-Mart had sales of over one billion dollars and over three hundred stores acrossNorth America.Wal-Mart’s unique decentralized (分散的) distribution system, also Walton’s idea, created the edge needed to further encourage growth in the 1980s during growing complaints that the “superstore” was stopping smaller and traditional stores from developing. By 1991, Wal-Mart was the largest US retailer with 1,700 stores. Walton remained active in managing the company, as president and CEO until 1988 and chairman until his death. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and write the answer on the Answer Sheet. Many disease researchers have warned that rising global temperatures could lead to more diseases, for example by allowing tropical diseases to expand their ranges into what are now mild regions. This is a particular fear for the diseases carried by insects such as malaria(疟疾)and sleeping sickness. But the reality is more complex, argues Kevin Lafferty, a disease ecologist at the US Geological Survey’s Western Ecological Research Center in Santa Barbara, California. He argues that a warming climate could favor some diseases in certain regions while inhibiting them in others.Lafferty does not deny that climate change might allow malarial mosquitoes(疟蚊) to spread to new areas. However, he believes that hotter and drier conditions may also eliminate mosquitoes from areas where they currently thrive, such as Sahel region in Africa. If this were the case, he says, there would be little, if any, net increase in the risk of disease. In addition, many temperate regions such as southern Europe or the southern U.S. have good sanitation and insect control programs which, Lafferty says, would prevent diseases from becoming prevalent even if climatic conditions were suitable. Finally, he argues, climate change could wipe many species off the planet.Infectiouspathogens(病原体) depend on their hosts for survival so they too may become endangered — especially if they, like malaria, rely on more than one host.Laffery’s paper caused such a big stir among its reviewers that the editor handling it, Ken Wilson of Lancaster University in the UK, commissioned a series of responses arguing both sides of the debate to publish alongside it.“I disagree with the whole line of reasoning,” says Mercedes Pascual of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She points out that there are large human populations in the east African highlands, just outside of the existing range of malarial mosquitoes, and as temperatures rise, the mosquitoes will reach these areas. This will more than offset any benefits from decreased risk elsewhere, she says. Most of the ecologists do, however, seem to agree on one point: predicting where a disease is going to go next involves far more than just climate. No matter how the debate is resolved, they all agree that health concerns should continue to play a critical role in climate policy, and the debate shouldn’t be regarded as weakening the case for action on global warming.42.Disease researchers generally believe that rising global temperature might cause _________.A.more diseases to be transferred into tropical regionsB.tropical diseases to be spread out of its original areasC.malaria and sleeping sickness to become more complexD.some diseases to be prevalent in all regions43.The underlined word “inhibiting” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to _________.A. preventingB. livingC. freezingD. assistingfferty believes that a warming climate may __________.A.help mosquitoes in currently thriving areasB.cause a sharp decrease in the risk of diseaseC.prevent diseases from becoming prevalent everywhereD.kill many species that carry diseases45.Mercedes Pascual thinks that __________.fferty’s reasoning is partly acceptableB.east African highlands will be affected by mosquitoes due to global warmingC.mosquitoes will reach areas with large human populationsD.rising temperature will benefit places out of Africa46.Most of the ecologists agree that ___________.A.climate plays no role in predicting diseases.B.health issues should be the uppermost concern in policy makingC.action on global warming shall not be affected by the debateD.a policy should be made immediately to stop climate changeSection CDirections: In this section you will read a passage discussing Happiness. There are three paragraphs (Para.2-4) with incomplete sentences. You are asked to finish each sentence with NO MORE THAN 10 WORDS (see Questions 47-49). An example is provided in paragraph 1 (seeExample). After reading the whole passage, there will be three questions for you to answer (see Questions 50-52).1. What do we know about happiness? We know that people’s reports of immediate joy and misery fluctuate from activity to activity. We also know that subjective well-being can be complex. People can be happy about work and sad about love. The opposite of happiness, research suggests, is not necessarily despair, but rather apathy(淡漠). Some people just (Example).Answer: don’t feel much of anythingdon’t have (much) feeling for anythingfeel nothing/don’t feel much no matter what happens2. Nonetheless, people who say they are generally happy tend to be economically secure, married, healthy, religious, and busy with friends; they tend to live in affluent (富裕的), democratic, individualistic societies with activist, welfare-state governments. The connection between reporting happiness and personal traits often runs both ways. For example, being healthy adds to happiness, and (47)___________________.3. For decades, researchers have been especially interested in — and, with the recent invasion of economists, are now obsessed with — whether money makes people happy. We know that being poor makes people less happy. Some researchers argue, however, that having more money beyond that needed for basic security returns no additional happiness and can even create unhappiness. Making more money may be fruitless because people adapt psychologically to their levels of wealth and, like addicts and drugs, need ever more money to get the same level of pleasure. Or perhaps it’s not really about the money; it’s about position. People chase money to feel superior to the folks next door. That, of course, becomes a vicious and pointless cycle. Other researchers agree that the more money one makes, the more money it takes to move the happiness meter, but they nevertheless insist that more money — unlike the futile experience with drugs — does (48) , just at a slower pace.4. The money-happiness question was initially raised by economist Richard Easterlin, who observed that growing affluence since the mid-twentieth century had not led to more reports of happiness in national surveys. One explanation of the Easterlin Paradox, aside from adaptation and competition, is that increasing materialism ruined the pleasure Americans might have gotten from becoming wealthier. Some have argued that there is no paradox to start with, because the growing wealth since the 1970s has concentrated in the hands of the few. Average Americans haven’t gotten happier in part because(49)____________________.5.The experts pressing for happiness indicators are reacting to policymakers’ habit of assessing progress only in terms such as the Gross National Product. Happiness researchers propose blending their numbers with other measures of well-being, such as health statistics, educational attainment, social ties, political voice, and sustainability.6. Still, cautions are in order. Politically, this move expands the generation-long division between tree-hugger and lunch-bucket liberals. “Post-materialists,” who believe that Americans have extracted all the happiness wealth can provide, argue that we should work on other sources of happiness, such as personal relationships and experiencing nature. Materialists, who believe that too many Americans are stuck way below some wealth-and-happiness optimum, argue that we should keep pushing for more and better-paid jobs.50. In Paragraph 3, money is compared to drugs. What’s their similarity?51. According to the passage, what factors may explain Easterlin Paradox?52. In order to gain more happiness, what is the claim of “materialists”?Section DDirections: In this section you will read two articles discussing sleep. Read and do Questions 53 to 62.Questions 53 to 57 are based on the article on Page 8.Do the following statements agree with the information given in the passage? Chances are that if you’re looking to l ive a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago, as I was living with my parents, and I continue to experience this wit h my husband, as he is not completely zero waste like me. I’ve learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you’ll find encouraging if you’re doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.Zero waste was a radical lifestyle movement a few years back. I remember showing my parents a video of Bea Johnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be to buy groceries with jars, and have so little trash! A few days later, I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach. I had my own bedroom, so I wo rked on removing things I didn’t need. Since I had my own toiletries (洗漱用品), I was able to start personalising my routine to be more sustainable. I also offered to cook every so often, so I portioned out a bit of the cupboard for my own zero waste grocerie s. Perhaps your household won’t entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire. As you make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on what you’re doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board, your words probably won’t do much and can often leave you feeling more discouraged. So here is my advice: Lead by action. What is the text mainly about?A.How to get on well with other family members.B.How to have one’s own personal space at home.C.How to live a zero-waste lifestyle in a household.D.How to control the budget when buying groceries.9、King Canute couldn’t stop the ocean’s tide from rolling in —can Africa hold back the desert? That’s certainly what the continent is tying to do with its proposed “Great Green Wall”, 800km (almost 5,00 miles) worth of trees that officials hope will stop the advancement of the Sahara Desert, which has been rapidly expanding southward. The idea was introduced in the 1970s when the once-rich region turned barren (贫瘠的) due to climate change and intensive land use. But it’s not a new idea; China has its own desert vegetation project to hold back the Gobi Desert! Thanks to the Chinese plan, the African project aims to plant 100 million hectares of trees by 2030 across the entire Africa. The initiative is a decade in, and around 15% completed, and there have already been benefits for many communities and wildlife. It’s bringing life back to the continent’s degraded landscapes at an unprecedented scale, providing not only food security and jobs but a reason to stay for the millions who live along its path. The creators of the wall hope it will bring an urgently needed solution to the threats facing the African continent, creating 10 million jobs in rural areas, as well as preventing 250 million tons of carbon. The initiative is Africa-driven, which for those on the continent, is vital, and may hold the key to success. “The Great Green Wall…is about ownership, and that has been the failure of development aid because people were never identified with it,” said Elvis Paul Tangam, African Union Commissioner for the Sahara and Sahel Great Green Wall Initiative.“But this time they identify. This is the very thing of us!”The wall may seem like a moonshot, but all the best ideas usually are. As Thomas Sankara, former president of Burkina Faso said in 1985, “You cannot carry out fundamental change w ithout a certain degree of madness. The courage to turn your back on the old formulas, the courage to invent the future.”What does “us” underlined in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.African Unions. B.All advocates. C.Land owners. D.All Africans.10、For one week in May, more than 100,000 people in the UK carefully counted their plastic waste at home in a national investigation into plastic use and recycling. It was called the Big Plastic Count, run by organizations Greenpeace and Everyday Plastic. So how did they get on, and what did they discover about their dependency on a material that has become a part of our everyday lives?Jules, 41, and her family threw away 124 pieces of plastic during their week of counting. The packaging in party bags and sticker pa cks for her daughter’s sixth birthday was the most upsetting, she says. She had thought her household was quite low plastic and so was “shocked” by how much they used. “It’s the hidden stuff that isn’t recyclable—like pizza wrappers—that gets you,” Jules e xplains.“Every single sheet for the stickers in the party bags came individually wrapped in its own unrecyclable bag, and then they were packed together in a bigger bag,” she says. Her children are passionate about protecting the environment but Jules says she finds it very hard as a consumer to make the right choices.“We can only do so much. It’s in the manufacturer’s hands. The whole thing is such a juggle (杂耍).” Taylor, a25-year-old scheduler, says of the 70 pieces of plastic he counted, it was the cucumber packaging that upset him the most. He has family who live abroad where he says it’s easy to buy fruits and vegetables without any plastic. He’d also like to see more local produce in shops direct from farmers, which would reduce the need for excessive packaging used to transport goods long distances.“I get progressively more upset with the fact that supermarkets sell so much plastic,” he says. Even if he could find plastic-free alternatives, he says the cost is exorbitant. “The price of everything i s going up, but things that are better for the environment are much more expensive,” he says. What does the underlined word “exorbitant” in the last paragraph mean?A.Flexible B.Reasonable. C.Low D.Sky-high.11、The yogurt that’s past its sell-by date. The banana in your lunch that turned brown. The leftovers in the fridge that you forgot to eat. For most people, all that food goes right into the garbage can.Eight to ten percent of global greenhouse gas emissions (放) are related to food waste, according to a report by the U. N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. “When you throw away an egg or a sandwich,” says Yvette Cabrera, food waste vice director at the Natural Resources Defense Council ( N. R. D. C. ) ,“you’re also throwing away all the resources that went into producing those things.”That includes not only all the water, land, and fertilizer (化肥) that went into producing that food, but also the massive amounts of fossil fuels used to power the farms, transport the food, and create the packaging. Then there’s the issue of what happens to food after it’s thrown out. More food ends up in U.S. landfills than any other type of trash. Food rotting in landfills produces methane (甲烷), a greenhouse gas that’s roughly 25 times more powerful at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, which is produced by burning fossil fuels. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 4?A.Provide a persuasive example. B.Add more background information.C.Discuss a more serious consequence. D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.12、King Canute couldn’t stop the ocean’s tide from rolling in —can Africa hold back the desert? That’s certainly what the continent is tying to do with its proposed “Great Green Wall”, 800km (almost 5,00 miles) worth o f trees that officials hope will stop the advancement of the Sahara Desert, which has been rapidly expanding southward. “The Great Green Wall…is about ownership, and that has been the failure of development aid because people were never identified with it,” said Elvis Paul Tangam, Af rican Union Commissioner for the Sahara and Sahel Great Green Wall Initiative.“But this time they identify. This is the very thing of us!”The wall may seem like a moonshot, but all the best ideas usually are. As Thomas Sankara, former president of Burkina Faso said in 1985, “You cannot carry out fundamental change without a certain degree of madness. The courage to turn your back on the old formulas, the courage to invent the future.”【小题1】What does Africa’s “Great Green Wall” aim for?A.Offering more jobs for locals.B.Stopping the expansion of desert.C.Creating a harmonious society.D.Improving African landscapes.【小题2】Where did Africa get the inspiration?A.From their practices of planting trees.B.From the process of stopping flooding.C.From Chi na’s success in desert control.D.From Africans’ wisdom and hard work.13、Besides, 10% of rich countries greenhouse gas emissions come from food that was grown and never eaten. Food waste not only contributes to climate change, but also food insecurity and extreme poverty. As stated above, in the greatest food wasting countries, there are laws that confine produce from being donated to people in need. What does the underlined word “confine” in paragraph 3 probably mean?A.Refuse. B.Restrict. C.Contact. D.Protect.评卷人得分四、选用适当的单词或短语(共2题,共10分)14、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. When we grew up and father became older, sometimes we quarreled about our own views. So I try to get on well with father.[2]Remember the age of father. Being aware of father’s age will help us to understand him better. He has lived in the years when attitudes towards matters, such as poverty, unemployment, higher education, were quite different from those in our time. Thus it is impossible for him to change mind totally.[3]Listen to father. As we grew up, what our father has told us often sounds not sophisticated(圆滑的)enough from the world we live in today. Yet I have found that sometimes the words that my father told me long time ago are remarkably useful. If father knows we respect his point of view, even if we do not share it, it will help him feel close to us.[4]Remember that father has a past. When he was young, he lived a hard life. He came from remote village. How to stay in a strange city and how to earn money wereproblems he met first. He worked hard and faced all kinds of difficulties. Full of wisdom, courage and hope,______________ at last. It was a part of his life that must have affected him deeply.[5]Accept personality from father. Most of us have mixed feelings about taking after our father. We might feel fine about it when we arc considering his admirable qualities. But we have realized that we and our fathers share those characteristics we do not admire. Accepting what we have inherited(继承)is important.[6]Adopting any approach to get on well with our father is the issue of how we manage ourselves. We should keep a sense of humor with our father. Remember we will have our own child and surely we will be parents .Accepting and understanding our father is a part of our life.81.What is the best title of this passage?( within 8 words)____________________________________________________________________82. But with the Money Market, you are limited to three checks per month.Section CDirections: In this section, you will listen to a talk about blog TWICE and fill in the blanks with the exact words you hear. Remember the words you need to fill in are ONE to THREE words.Blog, a blend of the term “web log”, is a type of website or part of a website. Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other materials such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. Most blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via widgets on the blogs and it is this interactivity that distinguishes them from other static websites. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art, photographs, music, video and audio.Micro-blogging is another type of blogging, featuring very short posts.Section DDirections: In this section, you will listen to a health program from VOA. You will listen ONCE and do the exercises below, either filling in blanks or making choices. Here is a good reason to be hopeful about the future: it might help you stay alive.Findings from a new study were presented at a recent meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society. Researchers in the United States studied one hundred thousand women during an eight-year period, beginning in nineteen ninety-four. All of the women were fifty years of age or older. The study was part of the Women's Health Initiative organized by the National Institutes of Health. The women were asked questions that measured their beliefs or ideas about the future. The researchers attempted to identify each woman's personality eight years after gathering the information. The study found that hopeful individuals were fourteen percent less likely than other women to have died from any cause. The hopeful women were also thirty percent less likely to have died from heart disease after the eight years.Hilary Tindle from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania was the lead author of the report. She said the study confirmed earlier research that linked optimistic feelings to longer life. The researchers also gathered information about people's education, financial earnings, physical activity and use of alcohol or cigarettes. Independent of those things, the findings still showed that optimists had less of a chance of dying during the eight-year period. Some women who answered the questions were found to be cynically hostile, or highly untrusting of others. These women were sixteen percent more likely to die than the others. They also were twenty-three percent more likely to die of cancer. The study also found that women who were not optimistic were more likely to smoke and have high blood pressure or diabetes. They were also more likely not to exercise.Professor Tindle says the study did not confirm whether optimism leads to healthier choices, or if it actually affects a person's physical health. She also says the study does not prove that negativeemotions or distrust lead to bad health effects and shorter life. Yet there does appear to be a link that calls for more research.Section EDirections: In 2005 Steve Jobs delivered a speech at Stanford University where he told three stories of his life. In this section, you will hear one of the stories. Listen to the speech ONCE, and decide whether the following statements are true or false. Please write T for true or F for false on the Answer Sheet.I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories. The first story is about connecting the dots.I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college. And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting. It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that singlecourse in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.。
