ABSTRACT William Faulkner is one of the greatest writers in the 20th century. As a leader ofAmerican “Southern Renaissance”, he won the Nobel Prize of literature in 1949 for “hispowerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel”. (Faulkner,1949) Light in August is one of his masterpieces which explore moral themes related tothe decline of the old South. This thesis primarily concentrates on hard-to-defineidentity of the protagonist-Joe Christmas with the application of the post-colonialisttheory. Identity, from the perspective of post-colonialism, is a dynamic process ofconstruction involved with historical and social elements. It is neither natural nor stable, but invented and constructed outside. In the novel, Joe Christmas is regarded as amulatto suspect because of his birth riddle, despite the fact that there is no clearevidence about his uncertainty. Caged within the racism-rooted southern society, Joe'suncertain identity sets him onto the tragic life, for this ambiguity itself is a threat to thestability of the community. On the one hand, Joe is in the endless pursuit of his ownidentity under the influence of society. He is so obsessed with locating his own positionand seeking the sense of belonging that he cannot find peace in deep heart. It turns outthat all his efforts fail, without satisfactory consequences. In a certain sense, Joe createsthe predicament for himself. Having failed to apply the strategy of hybridity inpost-colonialism to fight back the society, Joe is doomed to be ostracized andabandoned by the mainstream white society. He is like a round peg in a square hole, wavering between the white and the black community all his lifetime. On the other hand, the whole society is keen to pin down Joe's clear identity in his own will, regardless ofJoe's intention. In a hierarchical society, it is the racial prejudice and different socialpowers that create and construct Joe as a part nigger. There are four chapters in the thesis besides Introduction and Conclusion parts. Chapter One is the literature review of Light in August both at home and abroad. Chapter Two gives an overview of the post-colonialist theories, especially theories ofidentity construction, which constitutes the theoretical foundation. Chapters Three andFour are the main body, respectively analyzing both the internal and external elementsof Joe's identity dilemma in the light of the post-colonial theories. In conclusion, the indeterminacy of Joe Christmas' identity demonstrates that theessence of identity issue is not whether one is a black or not, but the social constructionof identity of human beings. ABSTRACT The term “intertextuality”, which was introduced by French literary critics JuliaKristeva in the 1960s, refers to the relationship between texts. And it has been in thespotlight of the academic world since its debut. Kristeva claims that every text isconstructed as a mosaic of quotations; every text is the absorption and transportation ofother texts. The theory of intertextuality not only brings about great social, cultural andhistorical significance, but also stimulates a new thought and a refreshing researchperspective for the evolution of translation theory. Biancheng, a novella that expresses the localism, is the masterpiece of the famousmodern Chinese writer Shen Congwen. The story happened in a border town namedChadong of Xiangxi in the 1930s, and it depicts the special local flavor of Xiangxidistrict. At the same time, the novel showcases the kindness of the humanity and thepurity of the soul by describing the tragic story of a girl called Cuicui. The novel hasattracted lots of readers at home and abroad for its unique artistic charm and vivid localflavor. The thesis deals with the two representative English versions of Biancheng, one isfrom the famous British translator Gladys Yang, the other is from the Americansinologist Jeffrey C. Kinkley. The author engages in the exploration of how to apply thetheory of intertextuality to the translation of novels from theory and practice and tries todig up a new perspective concerning the translation studies of Biancheng as an effort toprove the fact that the theory of intertextuality can not only be viewed as epistemologybut also be taken as methodology for the research of novel translation. All in all, two research methods are included in this thesis. First and foremost, thecombination of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis runs through the wholethesis in order to reflect the frequency distribution for use of domestication andforeignization; in addition, the thesis mainly uses the case analysis, especially in themain body part. It expounds the enlightenment the theory of intertextuality brings to thenovel translation by comparing different translations of the different Chineseculture-specific items (CSI) in terms of linguistic, material, social, religious andecological culture. The features of the application of the intertextuality into thetranslation studies are as follows: it pays much more attention to the translator'ssubjectivity and manifests the nature of translation activities as intertextuality in aclearer way. Thus, it helps to build the new intertextual connections between the sourcetext and the target text and provide fresh new theoretical support for the macroscopicconstruction of the translation studies. This thesis can be divided into six parts. In the Introduction, the author displays a brief introduction of the researchbackground, research significance, the methodology, and the structure of the thesisrespectively. Chapter One is the review of the previous studies on Biancheng and its Englishtranslations both at home and abroad. Chapter Two is primarily concerned with the establishment and development of thetheory of intertextuality, and then the relationship between the theory of intertextualityand translation will be presented. Chapter Three is about Biancheng and its two English translations. It not onlypresents a brief introduction of Shen Congwen, but also elaborates the description of thetwo translators---Gladys Yang and Jeffrey C. Kinkley. Meanwhile, it provides us withthe background information about the formation process of these two English versions. Chapter Four is the main body of the thesis. The author initiates the comparativestudy of the two English versions of Biancheng by detailed analysis of five differenttypes of culture-specific items, namely linguistic, material, social, religious andecological culture,The last part is the Conclusion. The author holds that Biancheng contains a lot ofdifferent types of intertextual signals of Chinese culture-specific items which can betraced in other previous texts. At the same time, because of the different environmentand cultural background, the two translators share different understandings on theintertextual signals of those culture-specific items, resulting in the two translators' different choices of different translation strategies. Gladys Yang's version involves bothdomestication and foreignization, and foreignization occupies a larger percentage. Asthis version got published in 1981, the readers from the English speaking countriescould grasp the style and content of the translated version in a rather difficult way;while Kinkley's version was out in 2009, and he tended to use more foreignization thanthat of Gladys Yang, which helped to meet the needs of those foreign readers who notonly possessed basic knowledge of China and Chinese culture, but also yearned forhaving a better understanding of Chinese culture. In addition, Kinkley's versionsuccessfully maintained the local flavor of the source text, helps transmit Chineseculture to the world, and making it a worthwhile material for further study. Abstract With the development of optical networks, the architecture of optical networkbecome more and more complex, so the demand to establish monitoring network foroptical network is urgent and necessary. Traditional optical network monitoring systemfocused on the terminal of equipment, take the form of protection switching when thebreakdown of network to keep the integrity of the network, but this method can not givethe type and location of breakdown in optic cable.“Multi-fible monitoring system” isproposed to solve this problem. This system, based on the principle of backscatter, consists of OTDR block, opticalswitching, computers, embedded operating systems etc.It establishes a monitoring systemwhich could efficiently manage the complex optical networks. In this thesis,it firstlyintroduces the present research background of OTDR,describes the optical principle offiber measurement and the structure of modern digital OTDR block;then it gives thearchitecture of the fiber monitoring system which consist of MCU,OTDR block, opticalswitching,Ethernet and management software;at last it mainly introduces the self-defineprotocols,with these protocols we can request measurement, modify IP address ofMCU,switch the fiber link we measured, cancel the measurement and store the result ofmeasurement.meanwhile its monitoring function has no impact on the networkscommunication and it could discover the potential threatto optical networks by setting ofmanagement software, promoting the reliability and stability of optical network. Abstract The paper regards THE DRESS CODE as the theoretical basis, systematicallyresearching and finishing the man's shirt custom culture connotation and process. Through thedomestic on-the-spot investigation and foreign online survey the author gets to know shirt'scustom status quo, combing and summarizing the relevant literature in different countries, andsummed up the basic theories and methods of shirt customization system. THE DRESS CODE is the basic rule of international society and luxury culture. It containsrules of clothing and clothing of practice. In THE DRESS CODE system, is divided into fourtypes: formal dress, informal dress ,outdoor clothing and coats. Shirt is indispensable to theformal dress and informal dress as well, which is the main type of outdoor clothing. Inner wearshirt goes with formal dress and informal dress, which are divided into dress shirt and businessshirt. The dress shirt includes Tailcoat dress shirt, Tuxedo dress shirt, Morning coat dress shirt,Director's suit dress shirt; Business shirt includes formal shirt, business casual shirt. Abstract Patent documentations translation plays an important role for the spreading andexchanging of scientific information. As an important component of patent documentations, the translation of terms has a significant effect on the translation quality of patentdocumentations. At present, machine translation method has been fully developed, various kinds oftranslation systems emerged one after another. When translators translate the terms in thepatent documentations, they often translate them with the help of these translation systems. At the same time, in the process of translation for patent documentations, translators willproduce large translation examples stored in the term example library and can use it tooptimize the results from the translation systems, thereby provide better reference for thetranslators to assist them translate the term. This paper presents an automatic English-Chinese term translation method based onmulti-strategy. The work of this thesis mainly consists of two parts as follows: Firstly, through analyzing the characteristics of terms, this paper introduced three kindsof features that adequately describe term translation fluency, compactness and loyalty, namelyterm word formation feature, mutual information feature and term example library feature. These three features are combined with basic features, and regression algorithm in machinelearning is used to predict the translation quality so as to select the best result. Secondly, this paper optimized the term translation results with low quality scores by theterm example library. String similarity algorithm is used to find several term translationexamples that are highly similar to the source language of the term to be optimized in theterm example library. According to the target language of these examples and the translationof the term to be optimized, a translation grid is constructed. With translation model featureand language model feature, the Viterbi decoding algorithm is adopted to search a top scoringpath in the grid, thereby generate a new term translation. On the basis of the above work, an English-Chinese term translation system based onmulti-strategy is constructed. Experimental results show that the method achieves goodperformance in term translation quality estimation and term translation optimization.

The Reasons of Thoreau’s Reclusive Life in WaldenIntroductionHenry David Thoreau was an American author and naturalist, who was born in Concord and graduated from Harvard in 1837. Thoreau is considered one of the most influential figures in American thought and literature. A supreme individualist, he championed the human spirit against materialism and social conformity. His most famous book, Walden (1854), is an eloquent account of his experiment in solitary living in close harmony with nature; it is also an expression of his transcendentalist philosophy.Thoreau grew up in Concord and attended Harvard, where he was known as a serious though unconventional scholar. In 1845 Thoreau built himself a small cabin on the shore of Walden Pond, near Concord; there he remained for more than two years, "living deep and sucking out all the marrow of life." Wishing to lead a life free of materialistic pursuits, he supported himself by growing vegetables and by surveying and doing odd jobs in the nearby village six weeks every year. He devoted most of his time to observing nature, reading, and writing, and he noted down his observations, activities, and thoughts... Henry David Thoreau, as an outstanding, naturalist, essayist and poet in the 19th century, was famous for his transcendentalism in New England. He became a friend of his contemporary writer Emerson who first advocated the transcendentalism. Thoreau grew up in Concord and attended Harvard, where he was known as a serious though unconventional scholar. During his Harvard years he read about the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who later became his chief teacher and friend. After graduation, Thoreau worked for a time in his father's pencil shop and taught at a grammar school, but in 1841 he was invited to live in the Emerson household. He served as handyman and assistant to Emerson, helping to edit and contributing poetry and prose to the transcendentalist magazine, The Dial.He escaped the materialistic society and went to the woods to become a recluse and naturalist. To make money was not what he wanted. He hoped to live a simple life out of the complicated society to purify his soul. To some extent, he is simple but rich, primitivebut wise, independent but not lonely. All his life is in pursuit of freedom and individualism, which is complied with his principle of “back to nature”. In addition, he summarized his views on life in his work Walden. He often stayed alone in the nature to think a question or to hear the sound from the nature. I liked his desperation and independence in the nature, for now in current society, many people are chasing something in reputation, money and authority but forget what the important thing is to enjoy a free life. “Civilized man is the slave of the matter,”1. Thoreau and His Reclusive Life in WaldenWhat influenced Thoreau in choosing to live a reclusive life in Walden for two years and two months? Thoreau’s early life experience and his special skill that he learned during Harvard University paved the way for his decision to live a reclusive life.1.1The Background of Thoreau’s Early LifeHis early life experience played the role for his decision to live a reclusive life in Walden for two years and two months. His life in Walden was really simple but rich, dependent but not lonely, primitive but wise. He pursued his own way in Walden and enjoyed the essential facts of life and the happiness of the nature.Transcendentalists believed that there is knowledge beyond what humans can see, hear, feel, smell, touch, and taste. Thoreau stayed in Staten Island for one year to tutor Ralph Waldo Emerson’s children and when he returned from his experience, he built a small cabin on Emerson’s estate next to Walden Pond. He lived there for almost two years and two months. He supported himself by surveying and doing odd jobs in the nearby village. He devoted most of his time to nature, reading, and writing, and he kept a detailed journal of his observations, activities and thoughts. He was often lost himself in deep thought in the woods. Within six weeks every year he worked and raised money and in the rest of time he did whatever he liked in the Walden.1.1.1 Thoreau’s Study in Harvard UniversityThoreau grew up in Concord and attended Harvard, where he was known as a serious though unconventional scholar. During his Harvard years he was exposed to the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who was the advocator of the transcendentalism and later became his chief mentor and friend. Thoreau was not that excellent when he was in the Harvard. He only concentrated on his favor table books and was indifferent about his courses and scores.1.1.2 Thoreau’s Experience after GraduationAfter graduation from Harvard in 1837, Thoreau and his brother taught at a grammar school as a teacher, but Thoreau gave up his job, for the rule of punishing students on body was seriously against his own principle. At that time he worked a period of time in his father’s pencil factory. He studied on making pencils. He believed he could make a kind of pencil which can be used well than ever before. After finishing his experiment on pencil, he showed his sample to the chemists and artists in Poston. He obtained his certificate and they assured that his pencil was equal to the best one produced in London. And then he was satisfied to go back home. His friends made contributions to him about his achievement that helped him earn a rich life. However, he did not care about the money. He said, “I will never make pencils again. I will never do what I have done before.”(9) [Henry David Thoreau Walden or Life in the Woods, PP70]Thoreau really continued to go on his travel on several of experiments and studies. Every day he got new knowledge on the nature. In 1841 he was invited to live in the Emerson’s household, where he remained i ntermittently until 1843. He served as handyman and assistant to Emerson, helping to edit and contributing poetry and prose to the transcendentalist magazine, the Dial. When he was graduated from Harvard, he was a strong young man. His classmates were hurried to choose their job and were also eager to get a high-paid job. However, Thoreau lived up to his father’s expectation and chose to do according his own way. That is to say, he determined to study and act freely but not be bonded by the career. His goal was a kind of mission or belief which could help us have a simple and happy life. He was never hesitated when he wanted to oppose other people’s behavior and words. If he neededmoney, he did some short period work such as, making a small boat, planting, measuring, and so on to sustain a life. Thoreau could made a living anywhere in the world, for he was prolific in the math and the knowledge of the woods, and also he needed little in his simple life. He always kept a habit of saving and a spirit of enduring the hardships.1.1.3 Thoreau’s Special Skill in Living in the WoodThoreau had a special skill in measuring the earth. His rich math knowledge, his constant curiosity about size and distance of what interested him, such as the size of the tree, the depth of the pond and river, the height of the mountains, the distance between the top mountains that he liked best. He could measure the distance by means of his feet and estimated the height of the tree or the weight of a cow and pig accurately. Thoreau was very good at running, boating, skating, and swimming. He was familiar with the area of Concord, so he later on became an earth measurer. This job gave him an advantage which attracted him to explore into the new areas and studied the nature. Thoreau soon got the complementary because his accuracy of his calculation and skill. It was difficult for him to find nothing to do. Every day he was busy in solving the difficulties on the earth measuring. He sometimes questioned every customers and habits, for he hoped to put all his behavior on an ideal principle.During his life time, he gave up too many things. He never studied on any job and never married. He lived alone and never went to the church. He was refused to hand the tax. He never drank, never ate meat, and never smoked. To some extent, he has become a naturalist. He was unique in his mind and body. He knew how to keep poor but not be despised. At first he did not know his life style and later he just adopted this way of life and he proved himself it was wised.1.2Thoreau’s Reclusive Life in WaldenIn 1845 the Independent Day in America, Thoreau came to Walden alone and built himself a small cabin on the shore of Walden Pond, near Concord; there he remained for more than two years. The price of constructing the small cabin was nearly 28.175 dollars. Later on he began his alone life on his own way in the wood.1.2.1Thoreau Distilled His Own Land in WaldenEvery day he was lost in the beautiful rivers, mountains, and woods, hearing the singing of birds, seeing the swimming fish. He completely enjoyed himself in the harmony between human and nature and got away from the noise of the industrial civilization. He supported himself by growing vegetables and by surveying and doing odd jobs in the nearby village. He devoted most of his time to observing nature, reading, writing, and he kept a detailed journal of his observations, activities, and thoughts. It was from the Journal that he later distilled his masterpiece, Walden. He distilled an area of farmland and planted himself the potatoes, tomatoes. During the rest time of the farming in the land, he spent most of time reading books, thinking, and writing. Sometimes he met with the hunters who were from the woods near the pond and Thoreau was happy to talk with them. Sometimes some visitors who came to his small cabin to go on a visit to him, he would use his working fruit to treat them passionately. Thoreau loved the reclusive life here. He liked this kind of life, simple but rich, independent but not lonely, primitive but wise. He could do it himself completely according to his own life style and would not be controlled by anyone else. In his mind, he did not take the money seriously and regarded money as an obstacle to his own freedom. He thought if he wanted to keep freedom, he must get away from the inducement and interests of the money. Thoreau told the people the material life was not the only necessity to deicide whether someone lived a happy life. In a simple and poor environment, man could also live happily. So me people discussed about Thoreau’s life in Walden. They said he was a fake hermit. Actually, Thoreau’s life in Walden can not be called a totally isolated worldly society. He was not in the purpose of escaping from the complicated society but on the contrary, he supported the change of what Industrial Civilization had brought. However, the speed of the Industrial Revolution was so fast that it destroyed the balance of the nature and the society. People were too obsessed with the material life but forgot to insist on their original belief. Most of people could not be close to the nature. The development of the industry was at the expense of the damage of the environment. Thoreau was different at the tide of the Industrial Civilization. He chose to be back to the country life to venture on thepaths by mind travels.1.2.2Thoreau was Sentenced to the Prison One Night When in WaldenWhen Thoreau lived in Walden, he was sentenced to the prison because he refused to hand in the tax and was against the Negro Slavery. He stayed only one night in the prison, for his friend hand in the tax for him and took him out of the prison. During one night in the prison, Thoreau thought a lot about the civil government. He opposed the Negro Slavery and hoped the country can govern more democratically. Later on according to his own experience, he wrote the book Resistance to Civil Government. Many people also call for “returning to nature”, but few act like Thoreau to bind his thinking and practice together. The Walden Pond, in such degree, belongs to Thoreau only. He always stressed the word “live”, showing that he did not go there only to have a temporary holiday or visit; he went to set up his own way of living and thinking. He stands for a living style that holds great love and belief to nature and magnanimous life.2Emerson’s Influence to ThoreauIn the beginning, Thoreau and Emerson’s friendship was based on the role of mentor. Emerson moved to Concord in 1843. In 1836 Emerson confirmed his position as the leading spokesman for the “new views”, called Transcendentalism, by publishing Nature. Transcendentalism put emphasis on the spirit, and importance of individual, and also the nature. It despises the authority but support the intuition and mind deliberation. Meanwhile, Thoreau was working his way through Harvard. In his senior year he read Nature and was sufficiently moved by it to give it a graduation present to a classmate. More important, Emerson’s thought influenced Thoreau deeply and it must be a good fortune for Thoreau to live with Emerson together in the same village.Actually, Emerson’s theory of transcendentalism paved the path for Thoreau’s mind. Later on in 1845 Thoreau built a small cabin near the Walden Pond and lived there by stepping back to nature, which is complied with his mind and the principle of the Transcendentalism. In Thoreau’s mind, he thought man should seek truth by himself rather than imitating the ways of other people. The best method of seeking the truth of life is to gofar away from the noises of the worldly society and totally lost in the nature. Thoreau despises those people who never put an end to accumulating money. To live is not in pursuit of the wealth but to seek the enrichment of the spirit.2.1Thoreau’s Contact With EmersonAfter graduation from Harvard school, Thoreau came back to his hometown and worked as a teacher. In 1841, he gave up his work and put his heart into his writings. He was invited to Emerson’s home to teach his child. At that time, under the support of Emerson, Thoreau began his practice of transcendentalism which was first exposed by Emerson. Transcendentalists believed that there is knowledge beyond what humans can see, hear, feel, smell, touch, and taste. He was often lost himself in deep thought in the woods. Within six weeks every year he worked and raised money and in the rest of time he did whatever he liked in the Walden.2.2The Influence of Emerson’s Transcendentalism to ThoreauAll of Thoreau’s life experience and Thoreau’s contact with Emerson left him a deep influence on his decision to live alone in Walden to seek the truth of life. Emerson’s theory Transcendentalism made many contemporary writers accept it and became transcendentalist.First, the Transcendentalists placed emphasis on spirit, or the Over soul, as the most important thing in the universe. The Over soul was an all-pervading power for goodness, omnipresent and omnipotent, from which all things came and of which all were a part. It existed in nature and man alike and constituted the chief element of the universe. Now this, obviously, represented a new way of viewing the world. It was apparently a reaction to the eighteenth-century Newtonian concept of the universe: in the eighteenth century it was generally held that the world was made up of matter.Second, the Transcendentalists stressed the importance of the individual. To them theindividual was the most important element of society. As the regeneration of society could only come about through the regeneration of the individual, his perfection, his self-culture and self-improvement, and not the frenzied effort to get rich, should become the first concern of his life. The ideal type of man was the self-reliant individual whom Emerson never stopped talking about all his life. The transcendentalist like Emerson and Thoreau were telling people to depend upon themselves for spiritual perfection if they cared to make the effort because, in their opinion, the individual soul communed with the Over soul and was therefore divine. Transcendentalist offered a fresh perception of nature as symbolic Spirit of God.Above all, Thoreau, as a transcendentalist, was eager to seek the essence of life through living simply and stepping back to the woods to purify his mind and soul. In Thoreau’s mind, he thought man should seek truth by himself rather than imitating the ways of other people. The best method of seeking the truth of life is to go far away from the noises of the worldly society and totally lost in the nature. Thoreau despises those people who never put an end to accumulating money. To live is not in pursuit of the wealth but to seek the enrichment of the spirit.Thoreau lived by himself alone in the woods for twenty six months. He only spent six weeks on earn some money by working and he used the rest of time to think and read books in the woods. His friend and his tutor Emerson gave him enough supports. He emphasized the individualism and self-reliance. In his mind, Thoreau hoped to live a simple and independent life on one’s own hand rather than making frenzied effort to get rich. Life did not mean accumulating money. The theory of transcendentalism and Emerson paved the path for Thoreau’s special experience and mind travelling in Walden alone for two years and two months and also his later masterpiece work Walden Pond3 The History Background of Thoreau’s Life in WaldenThis chapter mainly discuss about the history background of Thoreau’s life. In 1841, Thoreau gave up his work and put his heart into his writings. He was invited to Emerson’s home to teach his child. In 1843, he was graduated from Harvard University and later on in 1845 Thoreau built himself a small cabin on the shore of Walden Pond, near Concord; therehe remained for two years and two months. At that time America was experiencing a great change in the industrial and society. On one hand, before 1860 The United States had begun to change into an industrial and urban society. From 1810 to 1861 the population of the seventeen states totaled 7,000,000 to more than 31,000,000 in fifty years. By the 1850s the level of education and literacy had risen significantly. People were all obsessed with the lure of the money. On the other hand, the Mexican-American War has taken place between 1846 and 1848. The Mexican-American aroused the discussion about the contradictions of borders. Colonialism, savage, and politic corruption had obviously revealed in the American society. The society was at the swing and turmoil. Due to the complicated society and the history age, Thoreau did not like the interest of money. Though he supported the industrial revolution and the prosperity of American society, Thoreau hated that business man or politician who only thought money was the most important thing for their own life to strive for nonetheless. What’s more, Thoreau was eager to live a peaceful life and believed that people should clean their mind and use their own hand to make a living. Thoreau hoped to live a simple life out of the complicated society to purify his soul. He was afraid of being lost in the rising wealthy society and became lazy and addicted to the inducement of money. All Thoreau’s life is in pursuit of freedom and individualism, which is complied with his principle of “back to nature”. That is one of the reasons why his chose to live in Walden under the turmoil American society. He went back to the Walden Pond to find the peace again.3.1 The Rising America and Big BusinessAmerica was at the rising period during the Industrial Revolution when Thoreau graduated from Harvard University, became a friend of Emerson and later on chose to live a reclusive life in Walden for two years and two months. The American politic, independence of America, the equality of democracy came true at this time. The industrialization boomed at many aspects of the society. People in America lived a better life. People were all obsessed with the materials. “Before 1860 the United States had begun to change into an industrial and urban society.” (12) [George Brown Tindall David E. Shi, America, and PP921] the roads, water and much other transportation have improved muchbetter. The new factories and manufactures sprang up everywhere nearly at a night. The education and school offered many talents on the construction of the society. People seemed likely to read more newspapers, books and magazines. And people liked shopping than ever before. The Americans at this time were too excessively obsessed with earning money and neglected back to nature to purify their own mind. Thoreau was an exception. He supported the Industrial Revolution and he hoped the America can become more prosperous, wealthy and strong than ever before. However, he did not really want to escape the materialistic society and went to the woods to become a recluse and naturalist, on the contrary, he lived in Walden just to find the truth of life and returned back to the nature. In 1790 most of the things Americans bought were imported, made at home, or produced in small shops. By 1860 American factories and technology were often the envy of their international rivals. In less than a century, new machines, new sources of power, and new ways of organizing work had transformed the United States from an agricultural nation to an industrial power. Engines of Change introduced some of the people and machines that were part of this great transformation. People worked hard in different fields in the complicated and noisy society. Many exploiters, adventurers and colonists set out to search for new lands and colonies in order to obtain more profits and earn money, however, those people forgot the essence of life: to live a peaceful and simple life and close to the nature. To make money was not what he wanted. He hoped to live a simple and peaceful life out of the material-oriented society to purify his soul. All Thoreau’s life was in pursuit of freedom and individualism, which is complied with his principle of “back to nature”, therefore, Thoreau lived in Walden as a good try to be close to nature and also Thoreau decided to find the truth and essence of the life there. In fact, he practiced his view of nature and his life style. The American society transformed from an agricultural society into an industrial one, people, which, to some degree, influenced Thoreau’s decision to have a good try that is,returning back to nature to explore the simple and original life, especially in the society where people were addicted to the interests and money.3.2The American Western Expansion and Mexican-American War“American Westward Movement, movement of people from the settled regions of the United States to lands farther west. Between the early 17th and late 19th centuries, Anglo-American peoples and their societies expanded from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast.”(13) [George Brown Tindall David E. Shi, America, and PP1002] This westward movement, across what was often called the American frontier, was of enormous significance. By expanding the nation’s borders to include more than three million square miles, the United States became one of the most powerful nations of the 20th century. However, this expansion also resulted in great suffering, destruction, and cultural loss for the Native Americans of North America. The war with Mexico had fundamentally broken out because of America’s rapid expansion and confidence due to their great size and wealth. Also, because Mexico had owed money to America, many people thought that they could obtain the money forcefully. When the exploiters, adventurers made their efforts to distill new lands so as to occupy more wealth and source, Thoreau thought the action of developing into an industrial country was at the expense of destroying the environment and nature. Most of people lost their peaceful heart nearly and even their belief changed totally. The unstable society and the Mexican-America War brought much pain to the Americans, therefore, Thoreau left the complicated, noisy, and turmoil society to explore his own life way in the Walden.Thoreau’s reclusion was not reluctant choice but Thoreau initiated his reclusion. He used to a cynical fighter, performing against the American slavery and the invasion to Mexico, being into jail because of refusing to pay the tax, and his remarkable thesis, Civil Disobedience, whose concepts influenced Gandhi, Martin Luther King and other big potatoes, but the serene Walden Pond calmed him down, there he routed out all the endless lies and burden of the earthliness, and found the life style that suited him the best desperate, simple and independent. He quite enjoyed his life there and showed his love towards nature as well. The industrial revolution and also the Mexican-American War promoted Thoreau to escape the noisy world as soon as possible. The contradiction between the Industrial civilization and the damage of original natural sources made Thoreau disappointed. He was crying for the beautiful nature and also the peaceful life, therefore, Thoreau chose a best try live a reclusive life in Walden alone.ConclusionHe wanted to live peacefully, independently, and simply. Money is not all the almighty power. Man should not be bonded by the lure of matter and also man could live by themselves through their own hand. To some extent, back to nature is very important for those people who are earning money day and night. It can help the busy man find another simple and original life in the nature. Thoreau had a walk four hours every day to keep energetic, and he wrote and read four hours every day. We see many rich reasons in Thoreau’s work Walden, People always try their best to obtain as many things as possible, and Thoreau adopted a special way to acquire what he wanted, and also a special way to purchase. He told us that if you like something, it is not quite necessary to buy it with cash; it is just like the relations between a viewer and a beautiful farm. He can go to visit it as much as he likes, and the more frequently he goes there he absorbs more marrows of the scenes and thus becomes more reasonable to be regarded as its “host”, while form the actual host’s point of view the visitor might only picks up several flowers. This kind of purchase is not paid by money, but something more precious heart that loves nature, together with the physical strength-and thus it can be returned with more precious things.References[1]Molette, Carlton W. and Barbara J.
山东省农产品出口形势不容乐观,主要情况如下:(一)优势农产品出口增幅明显回落从加工贸易总额来看,浙江省加工贸易总额较低,但逐年递增且发展速度1大众日报2007年全省农产品进出口综述/xinwen/xinwenzhuanti/2008/sdggkf/bjzl/200802/t20080218_3207075.htm2区域化管理模式推动出口快速增长/shandong/nmqb/200802/t20080222_3214214.htm-1-较快。
