Too much homework has bee a mon plaint in high schools and elementary schools. Students have to spend most oftheir time doing homework, even on weekends. As a result, they have no time for their hobbies, or for their parentsor friends. All they do is what they have to do, not what they like to do.The underlying cause for this phenomenon lies in the present exam-oriented education system. National College Entrance Examination has bee the sole focus of teachers, parents, and students themselves. High score bees the ultimate goal, to the neglect of practical abilities, personality development, and all that.It is urgent that we deepen our educational reform. We must allow for students' overall development, not just evaluate their test scores.太多的功课已成为高中和小学一个常见的抱怨。

公共英语五级阅读文章一From Boston to Los Angeles, from New York City to Chicago to Dallas, museums are either planning, building, or wrapping up wholesale expansion programs. These programs already have radically altered facades and floor plans or are expected to do so in the not-too-distant future. In New York City alone, six major institutions have spread up and out into the air space and neighborhoods around them or are preparing to do so.The reasons for this confluence of activity are complex, but one factor is a consideration everywhere -- space. With collections expanding, with the needs and functions of museums changing, empty space has become a very precious commodity.Probably nowhere in the country is this more true than at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which has needed additional space for decades and which received its last significant facelift ten years ago. Because of the space crunch, the Art Museum has become increasingly cautious in considering acquisitions and donations of art, in some cases passing up opportunities to strengthen its collections.Deaccessing -- or selling off -- works of art has taken on new importance because of the museum's space problems. And increasingly, curators have been forced to juggle gallery space, rotating one masterpiece into public view while another is sentto storage.Despite the clear need for additional gallery and storage space, however, "the museum has no plan, no plan to break out of its envelope in the next fifteen years," according to Philadelphia Museum of Art's president.从波士顿到洛杉机,从纽约到芝加哥、到达拉斯,所有的博物馆或者正在筹划、建造或者正在完成大规模的扩建计划。

Knowledge economyKnowledge economy was still something unheard of just a decade ago. But today it has become a household word and is on everybody’s lips. Knowledge economy is not only a concept now, but will be a reality in near future. At the turn of the century, a new knowledge economy age is approaching us.In the 1980s, when people talked about the Third Wave and the post industrial society, knowledge economy remained a concept yet to be crystallized. However, in the 1990s, with knowledge playing an increasingly vitalrole in every sphere imaginable of our economic life, a knowledge-based economy is gradually taking shape. Simply shated, knowledge economy is a kind of economic system based on the production, storage, distribution and consumption of knowledge and information products. Knowledge economy is knowledge-intensive, energy-saving as well as environment-friendly. In the knowledge economy era, economic development relies heavily on science and technology. For example, the information industry in the US has already ac-counted for 10% of its gross domestic product and is expected to enjoy a further increase in the years to come. This imminent knowledge economy age presents both vast opportunities and immense challenges to every nation. Worldwide competition in knowledge and information, science and technology, inventions and patents, nature a land human resources will become evenmore fierce. As the saying goes, "Knowledge is power", and so the gap between countries, in the final analysis, is the gap of knowledge. To meet these challenges posed by knowledge economy, our country should raise the overall quality of her labor force and cultivate more and more specialized personnel.公共英语五级作文高分论说文模板(一)对立观点式()表示可有可无的话,字不够就加上。

Recently there has been some heated discussion on the family relationship. The issue that families are currently not as intimate as they seem to be is a complex one, since it involves a conflict between traditional values of family unification and the modern ones . In my view, the final judgment will depend on a combination of two (three) essential aspects. At the first place, with the progress of a society, some people, the younger ones after the baby booms in particular, are more inclined to live in smaller family units. As a result, they will surely spend less time staying with their parents, thus creating certain isolation with their parents. At the second place, the change of production mode also offers a convincing interpretation of such social phenomenon. More often than not, young people, under the fierce social competition, tend to work longer hours. Under such conditions, it is not uncommon that they are deprived of any leisure moment, let alone sharing some time with their families. Gradually, the concept of a closed family fades from their consciousness. Finally, technical upsurge is also a major source of such a social observation, for if young people can resort to more effective means of communication such as telephones or E-mails, they will probably keep in touch with their families electronically rather than enjoying a dinner with them.Given the reasons above, it is safe to conclude that alienation has exerted negative impacts on the sustainable development of a family, but what measures should be taken to arrest and reverse this situation? Governments at all levels are expected to launch comprehensive projects that attach due importance to a closedfamily. Although these plans are geographically and culturally specific, they must contain a key element: education. By education I mean consensus among the young people that a closed family is an indispensable part in an ever-changing society. Many options still exist, and human beings can still have a bright future under a harmonious family atmosphere. As an old saying goes, “East or west, home is the best.”(344words)。

CarAs traffic problems become more and more serious in many cities of developed and d eveloping countries, their governments have to try hard and loads of money and energ y have been spent to deal with them.Firstly, it is not efficient for the commuters to use their private cars to and back from t heir workplaces. Occasionally we can see they have to sit on the wheels wasting tim e and fuel in a heavy traffic jam. At the same time, through burning the fossil fuels, gr een house gas CO2, CO1, acid rain gas SO2, fumes and dusts are being released into t he atmosphere, all of which heavily overload the environment. Thirdly, with the incre ase of private cars, the road traffic accidents are also rise dramatically. For example, i n a city with 5000 cars, there will be at least 250 accidents happening everyday, whic h also burden the public healthy services. On the contrary, expected public traffic may be an ideal solution to these problems. F or example city buses and railways are widely used or being constructed by many citi es. People can take buses easily, which can be found every 10 minutes or less in the p eak time. Actually, Nottingham Transport Company is building its own light railway i n the city, which is announced by the speak man of the company, “It will be complete d in the next year, the tickets will be very competitive and at the same time the trave l will be very safe and comfortable.”On the other hand, public traffic had its own disadvantages. Usually it cannot provid e door-to-door service. It is inconvenient to go shopping by public vehicles. Sometime s you must wait a long time for the train. And quite a lot of people prefer to enjoy driv ing.In conclusion, developing the public traffic is a useful approach to deal with these difficulties. One possible way, if not the best, is to taxi private cars heavily and use these revenues to provide citiz ns cheaper public traffic services.TobaccoAdvertisements of tobacco and those of “smoking is harmful”are often seentogether. But there has been an on-going argument about whether or nottobacco should be forbidden and made illegal. I have always believed that smoking should be illegal for the following reasons.First, smoking does great harm to human health and causes many diseases. It is reported that more than 70% of lung cancer sufferers are smokers, andthe average life-span of smokers is seven years less than that of non-smokers. Moreover, it hurts not only smokers, but also the ones around the smokers. Many researchers claim that breathing “second-hand smoke” maybe even more harmful than smoking.Second, many social problems and disasters can be attributed to smoking. For instance, many wives cannot bear their husbands’ smoking all the time, which causes many quarrels, or even divorces. Furthermore, the biggest firedisaster in China, the Daxinganling fire disaster, was caused by a burning cigarette end, and the cost of the resulting loss was unimaginable.Last, smoking tobaccos is a main source of air pollution.A magazine said thatfor every cigarette smoked each day,a whole tree is needed to clean the air.In other words, smoking one less cigar every day equals planting a tree. Itis a brilliant contribution to the earth we are living on.In a word, all the above demonstrate that smoking harms yourselves as wellas your neighbors, pollutes the air we ourselves are breathing, and evenagitates the social peace. So, in my opinion, tobacco should be strictly forbidden, and smoking should be made illegal.GapNowadays, the gap between the city and the countryside becomes more and more over t, which arouses colossal concerns. To understand the solution, let’s take a closer loo k at the causes of the gap at first. The main reason of the gap is the unequal investment between city and rural area. Chi na is a typical example. While more and more money is being invested to the coastal a reas and big cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, the lack of investment barriers great ly the society development of rural area and western regionsThe low education level partly sharps the gap. There is no doubt that the prime force o f productivity is education. However, because of poverty, thousands of people go to w ork without graduating from primary school. The poorer, the few children go to schoo l. This bad cycle finally leads to the dream of rich becoming a dream that is hard to re alize. Moreover, the rural area is short of people with high quality. A survey proved that mo st of university students, whether they come from city or countryside, choose big citie s instead of poor areas to work. The rural area can neither adept talent man nor attrac t talent man. No wonder the gap is increasing largely.Hence, The government ought to knock itself out to decrease the gap as soon as possi ble. First, balance the investment between city and rural area. In addition, the educatio n level should be improved, especially pay attention on raising high quality people. B esides, let more people realize the latent capacity of rural area in order to attract talen t and investment. The set up of CCTV channel12-western region channel is a good example.Only when the ways mentioned above are realized step by step, can the gap between t he cities and the countryside be bridged.facilityTheatres and sports stadiums are facilities with the purpose of enriching people’s spiritual life. However, some people claim that the government should spend mor e money on medical care and education rather than on such recreational programs. As a matter of fact, these people fail to realize the essence of this issue. I disagree with this statement for the following reasons.First, with the development of society, the basic material needs for people has m ainly satisfied, a more important task for the government is to improve people’sspiritual life. Human beings differ from other animal species in that we live not only for prolonging our lives, but also for spiritual pursuit.Second, entertainment projects contribute to the development of economy, as well as collect money to solve people’s basic needs. An typical example can be foundin the fact that every country is eager to win the right of hold the Olympics mainly because of the economic benefits it brings. Another example is that many sports and cultural activities have donated a considerable amount of fun for benefic projects.Last but not least, entertainment and cultural services also play an important role in education as well as improvement of people’s health. As the living standard enhance, people tend to not only go to school for education, but also go to the atres to receive another form of education. Sport facilities such as stadiums provide opportunities for people to exercise their body.According to the reasons I give above, it can be concluded that entertainment andcultural constructions are worth building. The statement that government shouldn’t put money on them is invalid.ComputerComputer, the most exciting and significant invention in 20 century, will reshape our l ives and our world. As a result, some people proclaim that computers should be invol ved into our classroom, and replace the roles of human teachers. However, I cannot ag ree with their point of view.Admittedly, as the useful tools, computers can become the optimum assistants for hu man teachers in the classroom. To beginning, vivid pictures shown on screen can moti vate students’ interest and curiosity dramatically. Moreover, the combination of comp uters and Internet can provide children the abundant information. Although computer s enjoy considerable merits, they cannot compare with human teachers for two main r easons.Among countless factors which influence my inclination, there is a most conspicuou s one: computers are not as qualified as human teachers in academic fields. As we al l know, students can get the final result of a mathematic question under the help of co mputers, however, they are still confused on the whole computing process. By contras t, our human teachers’ performance is much better in those cases. They not only can t each students how to analyze and compute the question, but also can remind them wh at are the possible errors that they may meet. Thus, human teachers are more adequat e than computers in academic aspect. The second advantage of human teachers is they can guide students to deal with som e psychological problems that they meet in schools. In China, sometimes, teachers eve n burden many responsibilities that students’ parents have. For example, as for the stu dent with rebellious spirit, the important duty for teachers is to prevent the student fro m campus violence, even crime. Obviously, computers cannot do that.In summary, from what has been discussed above, we may safely arrive at the conclus ion that the positions of human teachers are unshakable, and computers cannot take th e places of them.NurtureNowhere in the world has the issue of children’s education been so muchdebated as in our society. Nowadays, many parents let their children attendall kinds of courses that will help children to get a better future; therefore, some people think that the postnatal nurture is more important than thecongenital factors for personal growth and progress. The above point iscertainly true; this essay will outline three reasons. The main reason is that success of a child would not be separated from rightteaching and personal effort. Currently, lots of famous scientists andpoliticians gain huge success in the world, as they are long-term to hardwork. Moreover, the main reason why plenty of developing countries dropbehind is their poor education.Another reason is that if people do not work hard but only depend on theirhigh intellect, they will be far from successful. For instance, the little Brontewas quite clever during his childhood; he was particularly adept at writing. But he was so satisfied with his superior intellect that he did not studycarefully. Finally, he became an idle person. However, his sisters becamefamous authors as a result of their hard study. They are Charlotte Bronteand Emily Bronte. Charlotte wrote “Jane Eyre “,“Wuthering Heights” waswritten by Emily.Last but not the least reason is the advantages of natural factors that aremore and more similar.Plenty of advanced technological products are invented and widely used. They can supply people’s gaps.In the past, the differenceof mathematical ability was remarkable. With the invention of the calculator, people can hardly find out the difference. In conclusion, scientific and proper teaching is the most significant factor for personal growth and development. If people are satisfied with their advantages, they will become the biggest failures.GAPAs the step of economic development accelerates, the gap between the city and the co untryside becomes more and more overt, which arouses colossal concerns. Take a furt her look at the phenomenon, there are three major causes.Firstly, the insufficiency of investment in the rural areas accounts mainly for the issu e. China, for example, covers a very large area. Due to the emphasis on the developm ent in the coastal areas, the government devotes more investment in the large cities, su ch as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. The investment, undoubtedly, is repaid by th e threefold increase of economy and commerce in these cities. However, this is not th e case in the rural areas and the western regions. The lack of investment barriers the p roductivity and economic development and sharpens the gap between the city and th e countryside.Secondly, the low education level in the rural areas contributes partly to the gap of livi ng. Education is the prime force of productivity. Keeping this in mind, many countrie s and governments give priority to the development of education. China’s education w itnessed a rapid growth in the past decade. However, the education level in the countr yside still keeps very low. The enrollment of primary schools and secondary schools i s much lower compared with the advanced regions, not to mention the developed cou ntries in the world. Without good education, the development of economy and technol ogy would be a dream difficult to be realized. Finally, the influx of migrant workers to the cities from the countryside deteriorates th e undeveloped condition in the rural areas. The life style in the urban areas is very attr active to the people in the countryside. To seek more working opportunities, many people abandon the fertile lands and leave them uncultivated. If the situation continues, i t will lead to serious unbalance of economic and regional development. To sum up, only when the government renders more concerns over the issue, can the gap between the cities and the countryside be bridged. (325 words)Culturenowaday, the culture shock exists between the tourists and host country.therefore, som e people consider should try to model themselves on the local culture and convention. personally,i totally agree with the above point.firstlly,by abserving and understanding of local culture, the tourists can reduce the cha nce of offending the locals and misunderstanding consiously and unconsiously.in man chu area of china, people think the dog is their anticedent.if you come there, you must a lways show respects and love to dog, otherwise it will lead to the embarrassment and c onflict.secondly, understanding and following the activites of local people can show our respe cts to them.by doing things with their way,we will be easy to establish the good relati onship with them.the local residents often feel friendly when their culture are imitate d and understood.they are unconsiously bring us into the members of them.in addition, imitating can let us gain insigts into other countries.we not only can know whats people's life is like in other counties,we also can be enlarged our knowledg e and broaded our horizon, which will be cherish wealth in our life.to sum up.tourists should adjust themselves adapt to the local habits and customs, whic h will make them fully enjoy their travel and live in harmony!CultureNowhere in the world has the issue of culture shock been so much debate d like in our society. Nowadays culture shock stands out particularly betw een tourists and host countries, therefore dozens of people considered visitors should try to adapt local traditional culture and habit of living. The ab ove point is certainly true, this essay will outline three reasons. The main reason is that respecting the custom and behavior of the host co untry can help tourists understand its culture. For instance, in Islamic cou ntries, their belief is that the people can’t eat pork; they think that pig is n ot a symbol of spotlessness and pig will sully their holy belief. Therefor e, when the visitors come to the Islamic countries, they should accept th e custom, and then they will be greeted by indigene. There is no better ex ample than this to demonstrate the strength of this point.Another reason is that it is the best way to express tourists’ respect. Every one state owns her behaviors and custom; history saw the development o f this country. For example, when tourists go to visit host country, perhap s some of things are so out of fashion. However visitors also admire loca l culture and custom, it will be good for their communication with indige ne.Last but not the least reason is based on the reason of safety. Considerin g personal safety, visitors should pay attention to their manners and actio ns. Sometimes, rude actions will be brought dangers for tourists. In conclusion, the tourists should respect and understand local traditiona l culture and custom of host country. Otherwise it will be chill journey fo r visitors.我的研究领域是细胞生物学,主要通过分子手段研究癌症的发病机理。

In my view, the final judgment will depended on a combination of two (three) essential aspects.(原因1)Compared with the past, great changes have taken place in the size of a family life. As a result, the young people are more willing to live in their smaller family units rather than sharing the same apartment with the parents. With the time goes by, it is natural that family members are not as closed as they used to be. (原因2)Additionally, the pattern of social production as a whole also undergoes certain dramatic transformation. So the younger generation usually work under such a pressure that they seldom have enough time to stay with their parents. Gradually, The concept of a large family is fading from their minds. (原因3)Finally, the country has, for the past decades, witnessed an upsurge of scientific technology. So nowadays, a variety of modern technical devices are available. By and by, the young people find it more convenient to contact their parents through telephone or E-mails instead of staying with their parents. In view of such social phenomenon, it is imperative to take some urgent steps. For one thing, young generation is expected to enhance their awareness that a closed family is crucial for their parents. For another thing, the media, in collaboration with government departments concerned, is obliged to take concrete measures to encourage the young people to spend more time with their family members. Only in this way can a closed family be maintained.。

英语pets5作文模板Title: The Joys and Responsibilities of Having Pets。

Introduction:Pets play an essential role in many people's lives, offering companionship, love, and sometimes even therapeutic benefits. However, along with the joys they bring, pet ownership also comes with significant responsibilities. In this essay, I will discuss the importance of pets in our lives and the responsibilities that come with owning them.Body:1. Companionship and Emotional Support:Pets, whether they are dogs, cats, or other animals, often become cherished members of the family. They offer unconditional love and companionship, which can beparticularly valuable for people living alone or dealing with loneliness. For example, coming home to a wagging tail or a purring cat can instantly lift one's spirits after a long day.2. Health Benefits:Numerous studies have shown that owning pets can have positive effects on our physical and mental health. The simple act of petting a dog or cat can reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Moreover, pets encourage their owners to stay active through activities like walking a dog or playing with a cat, thus promoting better physical fitness.3. Teaching Responsibility:One of the most significant benefits of pet ownership, especially for children, is the opportunity to learn responsibility. Caring for a pet requires regular feeding, grooming, and exercise, teaching children the importance of consistency and commitment. They also learnempathy and compassion by taking care of another living being.4. Financial Considerations:While the emotional rewards of pet ownership are priceless, it's essential to acknowledge the financial responsibilities that come with it. Pets require food, veterinary care, grooming supplies, and sometimes unexpected medical expenses. Prospective pet owners should carefully consider these costs before bringing a pet into their home.5. Ensuring Proper Care:Responsible pet ownership goes beyond providing basic necessities; it also entails ensuring the overall well-being of the animal. This includes regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and providing a safe and stimulating environment. Neglecting these aspects can lead to health problems and diminish thequality of life for the pet.6. Respecting Others:It's crucial for pet owners to be mindful of their pets' behavior and how it may impact others. This includes proper training to prevent nuisance behaviors like excessive barking or jumping on people. Additionally, pet owners should always clean up after their pets in public spaces to maintain cleanliness and respect for others in the community. Conclusion:In conclusion, while pet ownership brings immense joy and fulfillment, it also comes with significant responsibilities. Pets enrich our lives in countless ways, providing companionship, love, and even health benefits. However, it's essential for pet owners to recognize and fulfill their obligations to ensure the well-being of their pets and the harmony of the community. By embracing these responsibilities, we can truly experience the joys ofhaving pets while being conscientious caretakers of their welfare.。

People have different opinions on the effect of television on children. Some think that it is good for children to watch "IV while others believe that television is bad for children. In my opinion, most of the effect TV has on children is bad.By the time children reach school, they have spent up to one-third of their waking hours in front of the television. Because they just sit back and let thing happen to them while watching TV, they become passive. As we allknow, children are inventive and they have the ability to imagine a whole world of their own. But what happens when their imagination is not needed, when TV does all the imagination for them? Obviously, these kids are not going to grow up as inventive and imaginative as their parents, for they have been robbed of creative impulses by television watching. On one hand, TV watching also forces kids into becoming consumers and then tricks them. They are surrounded by ads for dangerous toys, mind-less games, and unhealthy foods・ They force their parents to buy them, for the children themselves are not wise enough to detect the falsity of so much advertising. On the other hand, by watching too much TV, children are over ex-posed to violence・ They watch programs like murders, fights and many other crimes for hours every week, with no adult around to tell them that life is not like that. The effect of the heavy dose of violence is to suggest kids that violence is an ordinary way of life ,and that slugging, shooting and cheating are ways to succeed・The total effect of TV on children is dangerous・ It is time for parents to take charge and supervise their childrcn' s play instcad of parking them by the tube and hoping it will act as a baby-sitter. The influence of TV is so important that parents wi 11 have to be on their guard to make sure that their children are not being harmed by exposure to it.pets5考试作文范文With the widespread computers, there is an increase in the number of people making use of Internet. Some people believe that Internet will bring great benefits to people while others think Internet may cause depression.Write an article about it to clarify your own points of view towards this issue. You should write no less than 250 words. Write your article on ANSWER SHEET 2・One possible version:As computers are increasingly popular, we can have more access to Internet・ It is true that Interact can bring us a lot of benefits・ With Internet we can connect with the rest of the world. We can build relationships with people who are in places we cannot go. We can enjoy services offered on the net.Internet, however, also brings us some side effects. Internet use may cause a decline in psychological well——being・ According to the research done in an American university, even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently・ It wasn^t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feelings. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for me drop in well. being. Faceless. bodiless “virtual communication may less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and relationships formed through it may be shallower. What's more, exposure to the wider world via the Net makes usersless satisfied with their lives.Though Internet use may cause some side effects, we must remember that this is not about the technology itself;it's about how it is used. If it can be used properly, Internet call be more beneficial to our life.(二)It is often said that the subjects taught in schools are too academic in orientation and that it would be more useful for children to learn about practical matters such as home management, work and interpersonal skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write no less than 250 words. Write your article on ANSWER SHEET 2・One possible version:A criticism often heard these days is that the subjects taught in schools tend to be too academic, and contribute little to preparing a young person for the real, life tasks he or she will have to perform after graduation. They say that academic subjects are rooted in the past, and are not useful for solving modem problems- I disagree with this point of view for three reasons-My first reason is that it is the duty of parents, not teachers, to prepare their children to deal with the practical affairs of life. The home・ not the classroom・ is the ideal place to learn about home management and interpersonal skills. As for work abilities and attitudes, they are best learned "on the job" and under the supervision of an experienced older worke匚My second reason is that academic subjects have withstood the test of time ・ They represent the accumulated wisdom of our ancestors down through the ages, and far from being impractical, they equip US with the knowledge and confidence to make sound judgments about any problems which may crop up・ In addition, academic subjects are good for training us in mental discipline, while practical subjects are weak in this regard. My third reason is based on the saying “Man does not live by bread alone, "schooldays devoted solely to instruction in down-to-earth practical matters would be dull indeed! Lessons in the best literature of the world and the epoch一making scientific and geographical discoveries of the past enrich our lives and make US feel that we are part of the great family of mankind. All in alL the teaching of academic subjects in schools is entirely appropriate ・ It is my firmly held view that practical subjects have no place in the classroom. On the contrary, the curriculum should be more academic!(三)Write all article titled as “ Knowledge Economy v・ You should write it according to the following outline.Outline:(1)A new knowledge economy age is coming near・(2)What is “ knowledge economy ”.(3)The knowledge economy age presents both opportunities and challenges to us.You should write no less than 250 words. Write your article on ANSWER SHEET 2.范文见下贝一>One possible version:Knowledge economy was still something unheard of just a decade a90・ But today it has become a household word and is on everybody J s lips. Knowledge economy is not only a concept now, but will be a reality in near future. At the turn of the century, a new knowledge economy age is approaching us.In the 1980s, when people talked about the Third Wave and the post-idustrial society, knowledge economy remained a concept yet to be crystal-I i zed. However, in the 1990s, with knowledge playing an increasingly vital role in every sphere imaginable of our economic life, a knowledge—based economy is gradually taking shape. Simply stated, knowledge economy is a kind of economic system based on the production, storage, distribution and consumption of knowledge and information products, Knowledge economy is knowledge一intensive, energy一saving as well as environment-friendly. In the knowledge economy era, economic development relies heavily onscience and technology. For example, the information industry in the US hasalready ac一counted for 10 % of its gross domestic product and is expected to enjoy a further increase in the years to come. This imminent knowledge economy age presents both vast opportunities and immense challenges to every nation. Worldwide competition in knowledge and information, science and technology, inventions and patents, natural and human resources will become even more fierce・ As the saying goes, u Knowledge is power”, and so the gap between countries, in the final analysis, is the gap of knowledge. To meet these challenges posed by knowledge economy, our country should raise the overall quality of her labor force and cultivate more and more specialized personnel.(4)Some people learn best when a classroom lesson is presented in an entertaining, enjoyable way. Other people learn best when a lesson is taught in a serious, formal way. Which of these two ways of learning do you prefer to?Write an article on the topic. You should write no less than 250 words. Write your article on ANSWER SHEET 2.One possible version:Whether(or not)I would prefer a lesson to be presented in an entertaining, enjoyable fashion depends on two things: (l)my familiarity with the subject matter・and(2)what precisely is meant by "entertaining^ or “enjoyable”.One way of making the subject matter less daunting is to simplify it, perhaps by leaving the more complicated parts out. This approach is perhaps appropriate when a new subject is being introduced. Afar all, the basics are often the hardest part of a subject to learn, therefore it is important that they be taught in all accessible, non. threatening manner. Advanced students, how—ever, may grow impatient at a superficial treatment, and will appreciate a more scholarly approach・Another way of making a subject more approachable is to make the presentation clearer. Such a step is desirable for beginners and advanced students alike・ Genius lies in simplifying a subject, not in making it needlessly difficult ・A third way of making learning a given subject enjoyable is to approach it from a novel, creative perspective ・ Advanced students will profit from 100一king at old, familiar concepts in a new light. Beginners, however, would probably do better to study the material in the time-tested, conventional manner. In order to challenge tradition, one must first understand it・In summary, let me give my tentative for informality under the conditions outlined above. Let it be noted, however, that if a lesson is relevant and enlightening, it will usually command the student^ attention regardless of the teaching style. On the other hand・ if the lesson is irrelevant or insubstantial, then no amount of gimmickry can save it-5. People in modem societies are increasingly finding themselves under great pressure and having less leisure time. What do you think are the reasons for this? And give some suggestions. It is true that pace of life in modem society becomes faster and faster. Many people complain thatll they have little time to entertain themselves and it is difficult to free themselves from tremendous pressure・ What factors lead to this unpleasant phenomenon and what we can do to solve this problem becomes a concern to many people・Firstly, it is strong competition that makes people have to work hard to survive. If not, we will probably be thrown out of the game and become losers・ The competition has begun since we were very young. We were sent to me bestschools and then the best universities to pursue a better education so that wc could succeed in our career. At our work we have to work very hard to keep the job. It is very often that someone loses his job when his performance can*t make his boss satisfied・Secondly, it is our inherent biological nature that drives us to seek more opportunities and live a better life. We are always discontented with what we have・ To realize our dream, some of which is very materialistic, we have to endure the pressure and sacrifice a lot of our leisure time.A lot of pressure and little leisure time result in serious mental and physical problems. The basic way to solve this problem is to educate people that they should have a practical attitude toward competition. We should have a more relaxed mentality when wc make a decision about the work wc pursue・ For many people, it would be wise to choose a job which is not very competitive. For others, enjoy-what-you-have is a better option. (276 words)There is an increasingly large gap between the city life and country life nowadays. Analyze the causes for it and give some suggestions.Nowadays, the gap between the city and the countryside becomes more and more overt, which arouses colossal concern. To understand the solution, let^s take a closer look at the causes of the gap at first. The main reason of the gap is the unequal investment between city and rural area.China is a typical example・ Whi le more and more money is being invested to the coastal areas and big cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, the lac k of investment barriers greatly the society development of rural area and western regions. The low education level partly sharps the gap. There is no doubt that the prime force of productivity is education. However, because of po verty, thousands of people go to work without graduating from primary school. The poorer, the few children go to school. This bad cycle finally leads to the dream of rich becoming a dream that is hard to realize・Moreover, the rural area is short of people with high quality. A survey proved that most of university students, wh ether they come from city or countryside, choose big cities instead of poor areas to woric. The rural is a can that is not attractive to the talent man. No wonder the gap is increasing largely.Hence, the government ought to knock itself out(努力)to decrease the gap as soon as possible. First, bakince the investment between city and rural area. In addition, the education level should be improved, especially pay attention on raising high quality people• Besides, let more people realize the latent capacity of mral area in order to attract talent and investment. The set up of CCTV channel 12-western region channel is a good example・Only when the ways mentioned above are realized step by step, can the gap between the cities and the countryside be bridged・It is generally acknowledged that families are now not as close as they used to be. Give possible reasons and your recommendations. There is much discussion nowadays as to whether or not the relationship between family members is as close as before・ Diverse contributing factors can be identified・ In A e following, I would like to present my point of view ・Great changes have taken place in family life along with the development of society. One of them is that the once-extended family tends to become smaller and smalle匚Many children have to leave their parents at an early age to study or work elsewhere. As time passes, children become emotionally estranged from their parents.Compared with the past, social competition is becoming increasingly fierce・ People are urged to concentrate their efforts upon work, so that they can achieve success, or at least a good standard of living. As a result, they can! afford to spend their leisure hours with their families. The importance of bonds of kinship is gradually fading from their minds. In addition, the availability of various kinds of recreational facilities also diverts people from enjoying chats with the members of their families. Their free time is mostly occupied by watching TV, surfing the Internet or playing video games・ They come to lose interest in communicating with the other members of their families・In view of such alienation within families, urgent steps must be taken, in my opinion. For member of families who live away from one another, regular contact on the phone can bring them the care that they need・ Family reunions on holidays or other important occasions can make a difference as well. For those living together, it is a good idea to take some time off work for recreation periods to spend more time with each other. In the final analysis, a close family relationship can surely be maintained as long as wc realize the significant role it plays in our lives and attach importance to it.You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.Nowadays, young people tend to rush into independence. Many of them leave home to study or work while still in their teens. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this.Compared to the older generation, young people nowadays tend to be more independent at an earlier age. Especially, many teenagers leave home to study or work on their own. I am of the opinion that this new trend has both advantages and disadvantages. It goes without saying that earlier independence helps young people to better understand the people around them and the world as a whole, and to accumulate more social experiences, which are invaluable for their future life and career. Moreover, living on their own means, to a large degree, that young people have to face and overcome difficulties by themselves. Therefore, it may help to mold in them a sound and unyielding character during the crucial period in which a person's temperament is largely formed. However, as there is a good side and bad side to everything, we cannot turn a blind eye to the unavoidable disadvantages of early independence. First, people in their teens arc generally still immature. If they arc exposed without proper protection to all the temptations and evils of society, they are more likely to fall into a life of crime than people of the same age who still live with their parents. Second, they are inclined to allot[分酉己]their time and energy inappropriately, for they may have to spend the lion 1 s share of their time earning their own living・In summary, young people are well advised to give serious thought to both the advantages and disadvantages of early independence before making the decision to leave home and face life ' s challenges alone・At present many people think that one language should be used as the common language^ but others think that by doing so the cultures of different nations will be lost What do you think of these two opinions? These days, there is an increasing number of scholars who hold the opinion that, with the development of globalization, we need a common language to be spoken by all the people in the world. However other scholars are afraid that this will weaken other languages and cultures at the same time・ As for me, I am not in favor of the viewpoint that one language should replace others as the common one.Nowadays it is universally acknowledged that language is not only a tool of communication but also a kind of art. Each language, no matter what kind of language it is, has its unique pronunciation, grammar and expressions, which contribute to the diversity of the world. So, if the diverse languages are diminished, our world will become less colorful. We can say that language is a part of culture, and plays a considerably important role in it. Indeed. Some social scientists consider it the keystone of culture. Without language, so the argument goes, culture would not be possible. On the other hand, language is influenced and shaped by culture; it reflects culture. In the broadest sense, language is the symbolic representation of a people, and it comprises their historical and cultural backgrounds as well as their approach to life and their ways of living and thinking. Cultures differ from one another, and each culture is unique ・ There is no denying the fact that it will be a disaster for us to see the world's diverse cultures disappear one by one ・When all the factors are examined, we may safely come to the conclusion that although we are convinced that, no matter what our career choice is, a command of foreign languages is an important skill to acquire, yet we should protect our own language, the carrier of our culture. (300)Some people say that older people should live with their adult children. Others say that they shouldn 9t. Which do you think is good practice? One of the topics in daily life is whether or not the older people should live with their adult childrcn. Some people claim that ifs the children,s responsibility to take good care of their aging parents, because it's parents who give them birth and has brought them up. No doubt, there is some truth in their argument. But the fact is that some troubles may arise, which is neither good to the adult children nor to the aging parents. So my answer to the question is that it is better for them not (o.Firstly, people of different ages have different ways of life. The old people like a quiet, peaceful and regular life whereas the young prefer various activities and unrestrained enjoyment. If they live together, old may feel that they are always disturbed and the young may feel that they are often handicapped・Secondly, people of different generations have different views and values・ What is quite normal to the parents may seem to be old-fashioned or wrong to the children. When they live together, they may disagree on matters ranging from minor domestic matters to national and international issues. Consequently, family life may be unpleasant or even unbearable to both the old and the young・Last but not the least, adult children, like their parents, love independence and freedom, but their parents still take them as children and unintentionally interfere in their affairs. The situation will be worse if the adult children are already married. In this case, the children have already built a new and closed world and any outside interference may lead to conflicts・From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that if the parents and their adult children do not live together, both the old and the young can enjoy complete independence and freedom, live a life they like, and keep intact their affections for each other.Education is a right, not a privilege. Therefore, education should be free for everyone, regardless of wealth and social status. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer.Any modern economy needs well educated and trained people to operate efficiently・ Therefore, I fully agree with the view that education should be free for everyone. In order for people to obtain a well paid job, and to embark upon, and enhance their career, a university education is essential. However, the very fact that people need a good education to succeed in a modem economy is the reason it should be free. Indeed, companies are the backbone of any modern society because it is companies that produce the wealth that makes the nation economically strong・In a modern company that has to operate in a globally competitive market, workers are required to have a wide range of skills; technical skills, such as computer literacy, communication skills, such as effective writing skills and team working skills, and other skills that have to be developed in an educational setting・ Therefore, whilst people with a single skills base, welding, for instance, may still be needed in certain areas of work, people who still work in traditional manufacturing industries are more likely to operate computerised machines, and get involved in the decision making process which is the function of a small team• Therefore, if companies need well educated people to be profitable, then education should be provided free of charge・The problem, however, is one of money・Indeed, school, college and university buildings have to be built. Teachers and administrative staff have to be paid, and textbooks and other equipment have to be bought. The money, however, could be raised through taxes levied on companies. Therefore, given how essential education is, everyone, regardless of social status or wealth, should be given an equal opportunity of obtaining one・Nowadays many people think that sports stars are attracting too much public attention and earning too much money. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?Nowadays, the incomes of many sports stars are truly astounding. Some people claim that the salaries of athletes are too high and the athletes themselves attract too much public attentio n. Yet, in my opinion, such benefits are well deserved.First, sport is an important part of modern life as well as a commercialized part of modern society. In ancient times, people engaged in sports because they wanted good health. But nowadays, the addiction of millions of fans to sports results in a tremendous amount of business profits・Therefore, it is indisputable that athletes make a great contribution to modern society.Second, people tend to focus on the huge amounts of money made by athletes. They rarely appreciate the efforts that the athletes have to make in order to become prize-winners. In order to win the first prize in a 100-metre race, an athlete has to cover hundreds of miles during training. They deserve their high salaries because they sacrifice so much.Last but not least, sport is a symbol of peace and fairness, and athletes play very important roles in international affairs as goodwill ambassadors・They not only entertain people but also take the message of peace all over the-worlcl. It is not unreasonable that athletes are always in the spotlight. All in all, I would say that athletes are essential for promoting the peace and development of the world. Peopleshould pay more attention to the development of sports and be more supportive of the efforts of athletes.Tourism is a multibillion-dollar industry that supports economic development. However^ some people think that it causes too much damage to the local environment and culture. What do you think?Tourism, as a multibillion-dollar business, is booming everywhere・ Some people, laboring under the belief that tourism serves as an engine of economic growth, seem to ignore its negative effects on the environment and culture ・ But I think that these are not concerns that we can shrug off lightly.Over the past century, with the development of new means of transportation, travel has become easier than ever. Many popular places are flooded with visitors, who spoil the beauty of nature by creating and leaving mbbish behind God-knows-how-much trash(垃圾).In addition, a lot of unsightly (难看的)artificial facilities have been and continue to be built in order to promote tourism, with disastrous effects on the environment.Another drawback of tourism is the conducted (package) tour, which greatly restricts the exposure of tourists to local culture, contributes little to mutual understanding between nations and cultures. On the contrary, the superficial impressions tourists get during such tours only intensify their stereotyped (老iM)白勺)ideas about other cultures. What's more, the foreign ways (夕卜来的情形)introduced by travelers may well have an adverse impact on the local people, who tend to be susceptible to(亦受影响的) the influence of more advanced cultures・ In the long run, the uniqueness of individual cultures will be "wiped out by such homogenization (同化).But doift get me wrong. I am not saying that the tourism industry shall be banned in any country, as it does help to shore up (支持)the economy in places which offer few sources of income・ The significant point is that the unchecked (耒力□抑制的)growth of the travel business may render the development of an economy unsustainable(不自E成立的).So steps have to be taken to prevent the local culture from being u contaminated H or even engulfed (吞没)by other cultures. It is high time that we did something to rectify (调整,矫」E) this by taking the environment and cultural protection into account. The growth of big cities is leading to the destruction of the environment. Therefore, more should be done to protect areas of natural beauty.Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer1 fully agree with the idea of protecting areas of natural beauty in light of the ever growing cities. However, protecting the environment is, in itself, a major problem. With cities growing at an alarming rate, the destruction of the environment is evident. Indeed, not only arc areas of natural beauty destroyed to make way for buildings, roads factories and so on, but the pollution created by cities is also a major problem. This begs the question of what should be done about pollution.Pollution, although serious, is not unavoidable・ Take, for example, the pollution produced by cars and buses that contribute greatly to the demise in air quality if more money was allocated to the research and development of a cleaner fuel that didn't pollute the environment; then this would be a major step in the right direction of protecting the environment. And the same goes for the pollution that is produced by factories that not only dispense pollutant gases in the atmosphere, but also pollute waterways. Once again, developing ways of treating pollutants would bring about。

One possible version:There is much discussion nowadays as to whether or not the relationship between family members is as close as before. Diverse contributing factors can be identified. In the following, I would like to present my point of view.Great changes have taken place in family life along with the development of society. One of them is that the once-extended family tends to be-come smaller and smaller. Many children have to leave their parents at an early age to study or work elsewhere. As time passes, children become emotionally estranged from their parents.Compared with the past, social competition is becoming increasingly fierce. People are urged to concentrate their efforts upon work, so that they can achieve success, or at least a good standard of living. As a result, they can’ t afford to spend their leisure hours with their families. The importance of bonds of kinship is gradually fading from their minds. In addition, the availability of various kinds of recreational facilities al-so diverts people from enjoying chats with the members of their families. Their free time is mostly occupied by watching TV, surfing the Internet or playing video games. They come to lose interest in communicating with the other members of their families. In view of such alienation within families, urgent steps must be taken, in my opinion. For members if families who live away from one another, regular contact on the phone can bring them the care that they need. Family reunions on holidays or other important occasions can make a difference as well. For those living together, it is a good idea to take some time off work~ or recreation periods to spend more time with each other. In the final analysis, a close family relationship can surely be maintained as long as we realize the significant role it plays in our lives and attach importance to it.One possible version:Career or Degree? Every Graduate’ s DecisionAfter staying on campus for many years, some students become bored and can’ t wait to get a job. They are eager to lead a life that is less stressful intellectually and less pressing economically. In their eyes, a job can provide them with opportunities to solve problems that will demand a combination of both academic and practical knowledge. However, some students plan to continue their education in pursuing has her degree. As Far as academic preparation is concerned, the knowledge and skills acquired at an undergraduate level are far from adequate in the job market. It is a fact that an ever-increasing number of graduates are returning to school, motivated by the need to update their knowledge and enhance their skills. The news that graduates with higherdegrees are better off is a directresult of the shrinking job market. All this indicates that a bachelor’ s degree can hardly qualify students for a competitive position. If I were able to choose for myself, I would prefer to stay and pursue an M.A. degree. I know my choice would mean a commitment of time and money. Opportunities, however, always take the form of hardships and risks. The days might be rigorous and painstaking, but they would certainly be fulfilling and rewarding, and would surely lead to a prosperous future. Some people claim that staying in a place all one’s life is good for one’s growth, while others disagree with the view, and they prefer changing the place. Write an article to express your point of view on this topic. One possible version:Do you prefer staying in a place all your fife? There is a widespread concern over whether it’ s a bad thing that people live in a place all their life. But it’ s well known that one man’ s meat is an-other man’s poison.A majority of people think that staying in a place for a long time is a better c hoice. In their views there are two reasons contributing to this attitude as follows: i n the first place, people who stay in one spot can develop a fife-time friendship, a nd such a friend will give a hand without hesitation if trouble comes. In the second place, when people move to different places, they usually are under pressure from strangeness. A person may feel lost and tense in a place where streets, stores a nd schools are all different. As a saying goes: Fear always springs from ignorance.People, however, differ in their opinions on this matter. Some people hold the i dea that people shouldn’ t live in one place through their fives. In their point of vie w, on the one hand, people who spend a lifetime in one location can be locked int o a limited way of life. A real problem is that life lacks passion. On the other hand, those who move frequently have a variety of outlooks. There is a chance to appr eciate different ways 9f life.As far as I am concerned, I finally agree the view that people shouldn’ t stay i n a place all their fives. It’ s not only because people can broaden their vision in different places, but also because fear will disappear with time. There is no doubt t hat nothing brave nothing hasWrite an article titled as “Knowledge Economy”. You should write it according to th e following outline.Outline: (1) A new knowledge economy age is coming near.(2) What is “knowledge economy ”(3) The knowledge economy age presents both opportunities and challenges to us.One possible version:Knowledge economy was still something unheard of just a decade ago. But to day it has become a household word and is on everybody’s lips. Knowledge econo my is not only a concept now, but will be a reality in near future. At the turn of th e century, a new knowledge economy age is approaching us.In the 1980s, when people talked about the Third Wave and the post industrial society, knowledge economy remained a concept yet to be crystallized. However, i n the 1990s, with knowledge playing an increasingly vitalrole in every sphere imagi nable of our economic life, a knowledge-based economy is gradually taking shape. Simply shated, knowledge economy is a kind of economic system based on the pr oduction, storage, distribution and consumption of knowledge and information produ cts. Knowledge economy is knowledge-intensive, energy-saving as well as environm ent-friendly. In the knowledge economy era, economic development relies heavily o n science andtechnology. For example, the information industry in the US has already ac-cou nted for 10% of its gross domestic product and is expected to enjoy a further incre ase in the years to come. This imminent knowledge economy age presents both vast opportunities and im mense challenges to every nation. Worldwide competition in knowledge and informa tion, science and technology, inventions and patents, nature a land human resource s will become even more fierce. As the saying goes, "Knowledge is power", and s o the gap between countries, in the final analysis, is the gap of knowledge. To me et these challenges posed by knowledge economy, our country should raise the ov erall quality of her labor force and cultivate more and more specialized personnel.Section IV Writing(计25分,权重25%)One possible version:People have different opinions on the effect of television on children. Some thi nk that it is good for children to watch "IV while others believe that television is ba d for children. In my opinion, most of the effect TV has on children is bad.By the time children reach school, they have spent up to one-third of their wa king hours in front of the television. Because they just sit back and let thing happe n to them while watching TV, they become passive. As we allknow, children are inventive and they have the ability to imagine a whole worl d of their own. But what happens when their imagination is not needed, when TV does all the imagination for them? Obviously, these kids are not going to grow up as inventive and imaginative as their parents, for they have been robbed of creativ e impulses by television watching. On one hand, TV watching also forces kids into becoming consumers and then tricks them. They are surrounded by ads for dangerous toys, mind-less games, an d unhealthy foods. They force their parents to buy them, for the children themselve s are not wise enough to detect the falsity of so much advertising. On the other h and, by watching too much TV, children are over ex-posed to violence. They watch programs like murders, fights and many other crimes for hours every week, with n o adult around to tell them that life is not like that. The effect of the heavy dose o f violence is to suggest kids that violence is an ordinary way of life ,and that slugg ing, shooting and cheating are ways to succeed. The total effect of TV on children is dangerous. It is time for parents to take c harge and supervise their children’s play instead of parking them by the tube and hoping it will act as a baby-sitter. The influence of TV is so important that parents will have to be on their guard to make sure that their children are not being harm ed by exposure to it.()表示可有可无的话,字不够就加上。

What should we do in this situation? We must control computer. For one thing, we must know that it is not good to spend too much time on computers. Of course, most computers do us good, but some others do us harm, such as helping to cheat on line. Ave our needs rather than falling to a slave to them. Only in this way can we have a better life.
Why this happened? At the first place, when we use computers, we read from them, learn from them and print them. Therefore we may think: “ Because computers do us a lot, why bother other people.” Last but not the least, when people play on theinternet and talk on the internet, they feel lonely because they have no friends in the real life. In addition, internet delivers mails fastly without any hesitation, so people prefer using then again and again. And they are not willing to visit their friends. Once upon a time, I spend ten hours on computers. As last, I tired, and suddenly I lost my mind and dropped down from downstairs. But for help from my roommates, I would not live in physics and spirit. You see, computers almost kill me. I owe greatly to my friends and wish that I could live as long as them.
