They worked together starting then to further American Revolution and later to shape the new scheme of government. From the work sprang a friendship perhaps incomparable in intimacy and the trustfulness of collaboration and induration. It lasted 50 years. It included pleasure and utility but over and above them, there were shared purpose, a common end and an enduring goodness on both sides. Four and a half months before he died, when he was ailing, debt-ridden, and worried about his impoverished family, Jefferson wrote to his longtime friend. His words andMadison's reply remind us that friends are friends until death. They also remind us that sometimes a friendship has a bearing on things larger than the friendship itself, for has there ever been a friendship of greater public consequence than this one?

Chapter One Human Life Like a Poem I think that, from a biological standpoint, human life almost reads like a poem.
It has its own rhythm and beat, its internal cycles of growth and decay.
No one can say that a life with childhood, manhood and old age is not a beautiful arrangement; 人生有童年、少年和老年,谁也不能否认这是一种美好的安排,the day has its morning, noon and sunset, and the year has its seasons, and it is good一天要有清晨、正午和日落,一年要有四季之分,如此才好。
that it is so. There is no good or bad in life, except what is good according to its own season.
And if we take this biological view of life and try to live according to the seasons, no one but a conceited fool or an impossible idealist can deny that human life can be lived like a poem.
Happiness Depends on Solving Problems There is a saying that happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them. Yes, if there are no problems, we will have no development, because the problem can lead us to think and to practice, which makes us develop further. If we have no development, we cannot have true happiness. Therefore, our happiness does not rely on the absence of problems but our ability to deal with them. If we want to grasp true happiness, we should improve our abilities to deal with them. Now that the problems have appeared, firstly what we should do is not to ignore them but to pay our attention to them. Secondly, we should think about them and analyze what we can do to handle them. Thirdly, put our hands to the solving of the problems. After you have solved the problems, you will feel very happy, as solving the problems brings you a feeling of achievement. Therefore, if we are encountered with problems in our life, welcome them and solve them. In the process of solving one problem after another, you will feel happier and happier. It is an established fact that the topic concerning happiness has aroused stormy discussions in newspapers, television and network. So what is happiness? When it comes to the above-mentioned question, people opinions vary widely. While some people hold happiness equal to nonexistence of problems, others stand on a different ground, for they argue that happiness results from confronting and addressing problems instead of disregarding or avoiding them. While the pace of people’s living is speeding up, the happiness index is lower and lower. According to the recent statistic conducted by CCTV—China's most influential television station, people who hold that they are in a state of unhappiness account for 78%. This phenomenon is mostly due to the different attitudes towards happiness. To my mind, for one thing, it is necessary to keep positive mind when confronting with unpleasant things. For another, cooperation is of great significance in our life. On the basis of the analysis above, we may draw a conlusion that keeping optimistic, cooperative, and stronghearted, combined with being persistent and decisive, really count in dealing with problems and being happy. Only people who are skilled in handling problems can fully enjoy happiness and success. When it comes to the question “what does happiness mean to you?”, different persons may put forward various answers, some say that happiness is a life entirely free of trouble. While others hold the opinion that happiness is not the absence of problems, but lies in the course to copy with the difficulties. In my opinion, I am strongly in favor of the latter one. For example, I am weak in spoken English in college, thus in every oral class I am always the silent one, let alone to communicate with my classmates. At that time, how miserable my life is! As time goes on, I gradually realize that I must change it. So I actively take part in English corner. I am not afraid of making mistakes, just in the hope of learning as much as possible from others. In the course of learning, I really get a sense of happiness. Now I clearly know what happiness is, it is the kind of feelings which we obtain through the course of settling the problem, it is also the sense of achievement which requires us to make great efforts to deal with the trouble. To paraphrase our forefathers: Happiness is not the absence fo problems, but the ability to cope with them. The following examples can illustrate this viewpoint. For example, Mandera, a well-known African political leader, suffers countless misery and faces a series serious problems. However, he is a happy man and easy to admire. Because he eradicates the inequality in Africa and makes a disproportionately contribution to African development. Take a look around ourselves. The number of students who taking part in the entrance examinations for the postgraduate schools has swollen by about 11% every year. They confront with various problems including learning, psychology, and health. But they still are happy. Because with the help from WenDu the students can develop the ability to address all problems. To ensure to develop this ability, you can do a lot. For instance, if you are reluctant to tackle problems, you can change thinking mode and eradicate pessimistic attitudes. The Way to Happiness When it comes to the topic of “happiness”, the opinions of people usually distinguish from each other, which gives rise to the heated discussion among the public concerning the way to achieve happiness. As the saying goes,“Happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them.” I personally agree that the ability to cope with complications in. Life is the right path of pursuing happiness. However, how could we deal with daily troubles or even struggles could generate serious concerns? From my perspective, to begin with individuals, optimism could perform an essential character. According to a survey conducted in certain institution in China, the percent of people with optimistic attitudes far outweighs the opposite in the aspects of overcoming dilemmas, thus having better opportunity to achieve the sense of happiness. In addition, in terms of the society, certain institutions in China should launch relevant campaigns to strengthen the emphasis putting on the resolving of a problem, not the way trying to avoid it or even to neglect it. In spite of the fact that this may be a long run, these methods of coping with problems could definitely contribute to happiness in our consistent efforts. With regard to happiness, opinions may vary from person to person. Some people take it for granted that happiness is the pursuit of the external materials. While others choose to stand on the opposite side. As the saying goes, “Happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them.” What the saying illustrates is the significance that happiness derives from the optimistic mind to deal with problemsrather than avoid them. Only when we spare every effort to cope with the obstacles and setbacks we are encountered with, can we taste the fruit of success. Those who can suffer years of toil and accumulate experience will genuinely feel happy. For instance, Helen Keller, one of the most world-renowned women writers, who was born deaf and blind, has completed the magnificent works ‘If I have three days’ with her tenaciousness and persistence. In my view, we are supposed to show an optimistic attitude and develop the ability to cope with them when we are confronted with the obstacles. I firmly hold the view that you will surely experience the pleasure of happiness the moment you are equipped with the ability to solve the problems. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay on happiness by referring to the saying “Happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them.” You can cite examples to illustrate your points and then explain how you can develop your ability to deal with problem and be happy, you should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. 【参考范⽂】 To solve problem, to taste happiness “What is happiness?” is a cliché topic. Everyone has a different definition to the true meaning of happiness. For Franklin Roosevelt, “happiness is not the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.” For Elbert Einstein, “if you want to live in a happy life, tie it to the goal, not the people or the things.” Although the two great men grant different definitions to happiness, there is something in common, that is, happiness derives from the capacity to solve problems. I believe that this is true. There is no denying that life is full of problems. Let’s take environmental pollution for example. Pollution poses a great threat to our existence. Fortunately, this public hazard has drawn our greatly attention and many effective measures are being taking to solve it. In fact, now the public are benefiting more and more from pollution prevention and control. We can enjoy clear air, health food and beautiful scenes again. Isn’t this happiness? All in all, indeed, equipped with the ability to cope with problems should suppose to be happiness. In other worlds, in the middle of problems lies happiness.

Unit 9 What Is Happiness? The right to pursue happiness is issued to Americans with their birth certificates, but no one seems quite sure which way it runs. It may be we are issued a hunting license but offered no game. Jonathan Swift seemed to think so w hen he attacked the idea of happiness as “the possession of being well-deceived,” the felicity of being “a fool among knaves.” For Swift saw society as Vanity Fair, the land of false goals.
It is, of course, un-American to think in terms of fools and knaves. We do, however, seem to be dedicated to the idea of buying our way to happiness. We shall all have made it to Heaven when we possess enough.

【1】We should not hesitate too much during the first half of our lives, while we should not regret at what we’ve done during the other half. We should seize every opportunity to find a way out in our lives, for it goes off swiftly. We should say something urgent slowly, something serious clearly, something small humorously and something unsure cautiously. We should never say something that did not happen, something that you cannot do, something that does harm to others, and something that is disgusting. We should tell others our happiness in specific occasions and should not tell anyone our unhappiness. Do not easily say something about others. We should follow our own heart and interest, and fulfill what we should do instead of merely paying lip service and looking forward to the future.
幸福之道The Road to Happiness(英汉对照)
幸福之道The Road to Happiness(英汉对照)It is a commonplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursuing it. This is only true if you pursue it unwisely. Gamblers at Monte Carlo are pursuing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money, which often succeed. So it is with happiness. If you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hang-over. Epicurus pursued it by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little cheese on feast days. His method proved successful in his case, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous. For most people, the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life. But I think that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not, except in rare and heroic cases, be incompatible with happiness. There are a great many people who have all the material conditions of happiness, i.e. health and a sufficient income, and who, nevertheless, are profoundly unhappy. In such cases it would seem as if the fault must lie with a wrong theory as to how to live. In one sense, we may say that any theory as to how to live is wrong. We imagine ourselvesmore different from the animals than we are. Animals live on impulse, and are happy as long as external conditions are favorable. If you have a cat it will enjoy life if it has food and warmth and opportunities for an occasional night on the tiles. Your needs are more complex than those of your cat, but they still have their basis in instinct. In civilized societies, especially in English-speaking societies, this is too apt to be forgotten. People propose to themselves some one paramount objective, and restrain all impulses that do not minister to it. A businessman may be so anxious to grow rich that to this end he sacrifices health and private affections. When at last he has become rich, no pleasure remains to him except harrying other people by exhortations to imitate his noble example. Many rich ladies, although nature has not endowed them with any spontaneous pleasure in literature or art, decide to be thought cultured, and spend boring hours learning the right thing to say about fashionable new books that are written to give delight, not to afford opportunities for dusty snobbism. If you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, you will see that they all have certain things in common. The most important of these things is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you are glad to see coming into existence. Women who take an instinctive pleasure in their children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family. Artists and authors and men ofscience get happiness in this way if their own work seems good to them. But there are many humbler forms of the same kind of pleasure. Many men who spend their working life in the city devote their weekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens, and when the spring comes, they experience all the joys of having created beauty. The whole subject of happiness has, in my opinion, been treated too solemnly. It had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of life or a religion. Perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory may need a better theory to help them to recovery, just as you may need a tonic when you have been ill. But when things are normal a man should be healthy without a tonic and happy without a theory. It is the simple things that really matter. If a man delights in his wife and children, has success in work, and finds pleasure in the alternation of day and night, spring and autumn, he will be happy whatever his philosophy may be. If, on the other hand, he finds his wife fateful, his children’s noise unendurable, and the office a nightmare; if in the daytime he longs for night, and at night sighs for the light of day, then what he needs is not a new philosophy but a new regimen----a different diet, or more exercise, or what not.Man is an animal, and his happiness depends on his physiology more than he likes to think. This is a humble conclusion, but I cannot make myself disbelieve it. Unhappy businessmen, I am convinced, wouldincrease their happiness more by walking six miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy.

美文赏析(六)HappinessEven lottery winners and the Forbes'100 wealthiest Americans have expressed only slightly greater happiness than the average American. Making it big brings temporary joy. But in the long run wealth is like health:its utter absence can breed misery, but having it doesn't guarantee happiness. Happiness seems less a matter of getting what we want than of wanting what we have.Has our happiness floated upward with the rising economic tide? Are we happier today than in 1940, when two out of five homes lacked a shower or tub? When heat often meant feeding wood or coal into a furnace? When 35 percent of homes had no toilet?Actually, we are not. Since 1957, the number of Americans who say they are "very happy"has declined from 35 to 32 percent. Meanwhile, the divorce rate has doubled, the teen suicide rate has nearly tripled, the violent crime rate has nearly quadrupled(even after the recent decline),and more people than ever (especially teens and young adults) are depressed.I call this soaring wealth and shrinking spirit"the American paradox."More than ever, we have big houses and broken homes, high incomes and low morale, secured rights and diminished civility. We excel at making a living but often fail at making a life. We celebrate our prosperity but yearn for purpose. We cherish our freedoms but long for connection.
Title: The Journey to the Ultimate Destination of Happiness。
Happiness, a destination many seek but few seem totruly reach. It's a journey that varies for each individual, filled with twists, turns, and unexpected detours. As we embark on this quest for happiness, we often find ourselves questioning whether there truly is a final destination, a place where we can finally declare, "I am happy." In this essay, we'll explore the concept of happiness as a journey and contemplate what might constitute its ultimate destination.First and foremost, it's essential to recognize that happiness is not a static state but rather a dynamic process. It's not a place we arrive at and remain indefinitely; instead, it's a continuous journey of self-discovery, growth, and fulfillment. Along this journey, we encounter various experiences—both joyful andchallenging—that shape our perceptions and understanding of happiness. One of the key elements of the journey to happiness is the pursuit of meaning and purpose. Research has consistently shown that people who have a sense of purpose in their lives tend to report higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction. This purpose can manifest in different forms, whether it's through meaningful relationships, a fulfilling career, or contributing to a cause greater than oneself. The pursuit of meaning gives our lives direction and imbues our actions with significance, leading us closer to our destination of happiness. Moreover, the journey to happiness often involves overcoming obstacles and adversities. These challenges can come in various forms—personal setbacks, professional disappointments, or even existential crises. Yet, it's often during these difficult times that we discover our inner strength, resilience, and capacity for growth. Embracing the ups and downs of life as part of the journeyallows us to appreciate the moments of joy and fulfillment even more profoundly.Another crucial aspect of the journey to happiness is the cultivation of self-awareness and mindfulness. Intoday's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, losing sight of what truly matters to us. Taking the time to reflect on our values, priorities, and emotional well-being enables us to make more conscious choices that align with our authentic selves. Through practices such as meditation, journaling, or therapy, we can develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and our desires, guiding us towards greater happiness. As we navigate the twists and turns of the journey to happiness, it's essential to cultivate a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the present moment. Often, we becomeso fixated on achieving future goals or lamenting past regrets that we overlook the beauty and blessings that surround us here and now. By cultivating a mindset of gratitude, we can find joy in the simple pleasures of life and develop a greater sense of contentment. But what, then, is the ultimate destination of happiness? Is there a point at which we can finally declare, "I have arrived"? In reality, happiness is not a fixed destination but rather a state of being that evolves over time. It's not about reaching a specific endpoint butrather embracing the journey itself—the highs and lows, the triumphs and tribulations—as integral parts of our human experience.Perhaps the ultimate destination of happiness lies in the journey itself—in the moments of connection, growth, and self-discovery that enrich our lives and give them meaning. It's in the laughter shared with loved ones, the satisfaction of pursuing our passions, and the peace foundin being true to ourselves. While the road to happiness may be long and winding, it's a journey worth embarking on, for it is in the pursuit of happiness that we truly come alive. In conclusion, happiness is not a destination to be reached but rather a journey to be embraced. Along this journey, we encounter challenges, discover our strengths, and cultivate a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. The ultimate destination of happiness may not be a place we arrive at but rather a state of beingthat evolves from the experiences, connections, and moments of joy we encounter along the way. So let us embrace the journey with open hearts and minds, knowing that true happiness lies not in the destination but in the journey itself.。
(The,way,to,success)_0
成功之道(The,way,to,success)篇一:通往成功的道路The Way to Success通往成功的道路The Way to SuccessThe Way to Success First成功之路No one has the exclusive way to success. Some say money. Some say love. Others say a house, a car, a child, a degree from a top universitybut all are of these are only outward ways to show others that we’re successful. People think that they must have these things before they can be happy, but Scott Achor in The Happiness Advantage says that the opposite is true. Achor, who is a professor at Harvard University and who has been teaching the Happiness Course for fifteen years, recently wrote this book to show that happiness breeds success, not the other way around. When I read it, it struck a chord with me and I realized that truly positive, happy people always seem to love what they do and who they are with. Even if times get tough, they don’t knuckle under. They persevere and overcome all obstacles.

01、Make Way for Others’Happiness That morning, a bus was rolling on. On it were the people going to work. Suddenly, a car rushed out from the road nearby; the bus stopped with an urgent brake. It was a car for taking photographs of the wedding, followed by a long wedding motorcade. The passengers started to complain that they would go to work late, but the bus driver sat in his seat quietly and rang the horn from time to time.
Someone said to the driver, “No use ringing the horn; they would n’t make way for you. You’d better rush through the gap between the motorcades.”
”The driver turned back a nd said with a smile, “I ring the horn not to urge them to make way for me, but to bless them.” After a pause, he added, “Marriage is a happy thing, so we have a chance to make way for others’ happ iness. Isn’t it a happy thing?”

The secrets to happiness
The secrets to happiness We all know that money can’t buy happiness … but many times we act as if we’d be happier with a bit more money. We are conditioned to want to be rich (when we know the rich aren’t happy either); we are trained to want the latest gadget or style that television tells us to want; we want to earn more money because then we’ll have the good life.
But none of that will bring us happiness. No matter how much we earn, no matter how much we have in the bank, no matter how nice our clothing or cars or toys, none of it will make us happier. And the sad thing is that it could take us decades of pursuing wealth and luxury items before we realize this.

Low carb is not the right diet for everyone. Bungee-jumping is not the sport for everyone. Condo living is not a comfortable living arrangement for everyone. And there is no set blueprint for your life either.
You have needs, wants, dreams, and a history that make your life different than anyone else’s. Life is about diversity.
Formal Victorian style is not at all the right approach to a home for me with large dogs and foster kittens; but my streamlined casual style works well. My friend on the other hand would never be happy in a home with all tile floors, it’s just not sophisticated enough for her. “I need carpet and fancy drapes, and live plants”, she laughs.

The Pursuit of Happiness追求幸福The right to pursue happiness is promised to Americans by the US Constitution, but no one seems quite sure which way happiness ran.It may be we are issued a hunting license but offered no game.Jonathan Swift conceived of happiness as“the state of being well-deceived,”or of being“a fool among idiots,’’for Swift saw society as a land of false goals.美国宪法赋予美国人民追求幸福的权利,但是谁也说不清幸福奔向了哪个方向。
这好比我们得到了狩猎许可却无猎物可打。
乔纳森·斯威夫特认为幸福是“一种大上其当的状态”,或者是“白痴中的一名傻瓜的感觉”,因为斯威夫特把社会看作是滋生虚假目标的温床。
It is,of course,un—American to think in terms of false goals. We do,however, seem to be dedicated to the idea of buying our way to happiness. We shall all have made it to Heaven when we possess enough.
And at the same time the forces of American business are hugely dedicated to making US deliberately unhappy.Advertising is one of our major industries, and advertising exists not to satisfy desires but to create them--and to create them faster than anyone’s budget can satisfy them. For that matter, our whole economy is based on addicting US to greed. We are even told it is our patriotic duty to support the national economy by buying things.
关于秋天的英语作文幸福(中英文翻译)Autumn is my favorite season of the year. The air turns brisk and cool, and the leaves on the trees change into a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors. It is a time of harvest, when farmers reap the fruits of their labor. To me, autumn symbolizes happiness and contentment.
One of the reasons why I find autumn so happy is because of the beautiful scenery it brings. The golden hues of the falling leaves, the crispness in the air, and the peacefulness of nature all contribute to a sense of joy and well-being. Taking a walk in a park or along a tree-lined street during autumn is a simple pleasure that can bring immense happiness.

The Road To Happiness The Road To HappinessIt is a commonplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursui ng it. This is only true if you pursue it unwisely. Gamblers at Monte Carlo are pur suing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursui ng money, which often succeed. So it is with happiness. If you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hang-over. Epicurus pursued it by living only in co ngenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little cheese on feast days. His method proved successful in his case, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous. For most people, the pursuit o f happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical t o be adequate as a personal rule of life. But I think that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not, except in rare and heroic cases, be incompatib le with happiness. There are a great many people who have all the material conditions of happin ess, i.e. health and a sufficient income, and who, nevertheless, are profoundly unh appy. In such cases it would seem as if the fault must lie with a wrong theory as to how to live. In one sense, we may say that any theory as to how to live is wro ng. We imagine ourselves more different from the animals than we are. Animals liv e on impulse, and are happy as long as external conditions are favorable. If you h ave a cat it will enjoy life if it has food and warmth and opportunities for an occas ional night on the tiles. Your needs are more complex than those of your cat, but they still have their basis in instinct. In civilized societies, especially in English-spea king societies, this is too apt to be forgotten. People propose to themselves some one paramount objective, and restrain all impulses that do not minister to it. A busi nessman may be so anxious to grow rich that to this end he sacrifices health and private affections. When at last he has become rich, no pleasure remains to him except harrying other people by exhortations to imitate his noble example. Many ric h ladies, although nature has not endowed them with any spontaneous pleasure in literature or art, decide to be thought cultured, and spend boring hours learning th e right thing to say about fashionable new books that are written to give delight, n ot to afford opportunities for dusty snobbism. If you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, you will see that they all have certain things in common. The most important of these thin gs is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you are glad to see coming into existence. Women who take an instinctive pleasure in their childre n can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family. Artists and authors a nd men of science get happiness in this way if their own work seems good to the m. But there are many humbler forms of the same kind of pleasure. Many men who spend their working life in the city devote their weekends to voluntary and unrem unerated toil in their gardens, and when the spring comes, they experience all the joys of having created beauty. The whole subject of happiness has, in my opinion, been treated too solemnly. It had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of life or a religio n. Perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory may need a better theory to help them to recovery, just as you may need a tonic when you ha ve been ill. But when things are normal a man should be healthy without a tonic a nd happy without a theory. It is the simple things that really matter. If a man delig hts in his wife and children, has success in work, and finds pleasure in the alterna tion of day and night, spring and autumn, he will be happy whatever his philosoph y may be. If, on the other hand, he finds his wife fateful, his children's noise unen durable, and the office a nightmare; if in the daytime he longs for night, and at nig ht sighs for the light of day, then what he needs is not a new philosophy but a ne w regimen----a different diet, or more exercise, or what not.Man is an animal, and his happiness depends on his physiology more than he like s to think. This is a humble conclusion, but I cannot make myself disbelieve it. Un happy businessmen, I am convinced, would increase their happiness more by walki ng six miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy.
