铸铁件因为其结构的需要造成各个部分壁厚不均，有的部位很厚，在冷却的过程中就冷却的慢，壁厚薄的部位就冷却的快，使得同一个铸件各个部位冷却速度不均。

造成的结果有可能产生缩孔、或者把壁薄的部位拉裂。

为了避免这种现象的产生，造型完成后，就在壁厚厚的部位加放冷铁，用它来吸收铁水的温度，加速这个部位的冷却速度，缩短和其他壁厚薄的部位冷却的时间差。
