I was a bit 39 so I called Spot and we both hid 40 a bush where we could see but not be 41 . After a few moments, a straw hat came drifting down the river, followed by an oar, a picnic basket and 42 oar. Then came the rowing boat itself, but it was 43 upside down ! A few seconds later my Dad and Auntie June came running 44 the river bank, both wet 45 . Spot started barking so I came out of hiding and said hello. My Dad got really angry 46 me for not trying to catch the boat as it went past. Luckily, 47 , the boat and both the oars had been caught by an overhanging tree a little further downstream, but not the hat or picnic basket. So I had to let them 48 my sandwiches. We’re taught that we should get seven or eight hours a night, but a lot of us get by just fine on less, and some of us actually sleep too much. A study out of the University of Buffalo reported that people who routinely sleep more than eight hours a day and are still tired are nearly three times as likely to dir of stroke---probably as a result of an underlying disorder that keeps them from sleeping soundly.Doctors have their own special sleep problems. Residents are famously short of sleep. It is not unusual for them to work 40 hours in a row without rest. They are not in the least worried about it, confident they can still deliver the highest quality of medical care. But an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association points out that in the morning after 24 hours of sleeplessness, a person’s motor performance is comparable to that of someone who is drunk. Curiously, surgeons who believe that operating under the influence of alcohol is grounds for sacking often don’t think twice about operating without enough sleep.“ I could tell you horror stories, ” says Jaya Agrawal, president of the American Medical Student Association, which runs a website for residents. Some are terrifying. “I was operating after being up for over 36 hours, “ one writes. “ I literally fell asleep standing up and nearly planted my face into the wound.”“ Practically every surgical resident I know has fallen asleep at the wheel driving home from work,” writes another. “I know of three who have hit parked cars. Another hit a ‘ Jersey gate’ on the New Jersey Expressway, going 105km/h.”“Your own patients have become the enemy,” writes a third, because they are “the one thing that stands between you and a few hours of sleep.”The U.S. controls the hours of pilots and truck drivers. But until such a system is in place for doctors, patients are on their own. If you’re worried about the people treating you or a loved one, you should feel free to ask how many hours of sleep they have had and if more rested staffers are available.51 Sleep is a funny thing because ____________.A. the longer one sleeps, the less sound sleep he getsB. the more sleep one gets, the more likely a stroke occursC. many people stick to about eight hours of sleep to stay fineD. many people who sleep six hours a night still feel energetic in the day52 A surgeon who has worked 40 hours in a row without sleep ___________.A. can still provide quality medical careB. will remain alert because he is used to itC. may ignore the potential risk of insufficient sleepD. should be fired if he continues the medical operation53 According to one resident, they are short of sleep because ____________.A. they are too tired to fall asleepB. they are forbidden to sleep at workC. they are kept by treating their patientsD. they are too worried about oversleeping54 They resident who hit a “Jersey gate” on the New Jersey Expressway must have ________.A. fallen asleepB. drunk too muchC. been driving too longD. avoided hitting parked cars55. Patients are now advised to __________.A. monitor the hours of doctors by themselvesB. make sure that the doctors who treat them have had enough sleepC. ask for legal control of the hours of doctorsD. allow their doctors to sleep several hours before the operation(2)Earthquakes may rightly be ranked as one of the most destructive forces known to man: since records began to be written down, it has been estimated that earthquake-related fatalities have numbered in the millions, and that earthquake-related destruction has been beyond calculation. The greater part of such damage and loss of life has been due to collapse of buildings and the effects of rockslides, floods, fire, disease, tsunamis (gigantic sea waves), and other observable events resulting from earthquakes, rather than from the quake themselves. The great majority of all earthquakes occur in two specific geographic areas. One such area covers the Pacific Ocean and its bordering landmasses. The other extends from the East Indians to the Atlas Mountains, including the Himalayas, Iran, Turkey, and the Alpine regions. It is in these two great belts or zones that ninety percent of all earthquakes take place; they may, however, happen anywhere at any time. This element of the unknown has for centuries added greatly to the dread and horror surrounding earthquakes, but in recent times there have been indications that earthquake forecast may be possible. By analyzing changes in animal behavior, patterns of movements in the earth’s shell, variations in the earth’s force of attraction, and the frequency with which minor earth shakes are observed, scientists have shown increasing success in expecting when and where earthquakes will strike. As a result, a worldwide earthquake warning network is already in operation and has helped to prepare for (and thus lessen) the vast destruction that might otherwise have been totally unexpected. It is doubtful that man will ever be able to control earthquakes and get rid of their destructiveness altogether, but as how and why earthquakes happen become better understood, man will become more and more able to deal with their possible damage before they occur.56. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. Earthquake destruction is decliningB. Earthquake forecast is improvingC. Man is no longer fearful of earthquakes.D. Man is capable of conquering earthquakes57. We can infer from the passage that quakes __________.A. may happen anywhere at any timeB. mostly strike in oceans and mountainsC. are unobservable in masses of landD. are hardly the direct cause of fatalities58. The phrase “this element of the unknown” (Paragraph 3) refers to ___________.A. the extension of earthquake zonesB. the percentage of earthquake occurrencesC. when and where earthquakes may occurD. what big damage earthquakes may cause59. Man’s research on earthquake forecast at present is to ____________.A. reduce the loss from earthquake disastersB. lower the frequency of earthquakesC. release the energy that causes earthquakesD. analyze the relationship between different earthquakes60. Which of the following describes the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A. Inform the readerB. Entertain the readerC. Disprove a conceptD. Question a concept(3)Everyone knows how the story of Cinderella ends, but did you ever really think about how she spent her days before she met the prince? Her daily routine was not fascinating. She did everything from sweeping the floor to cooking the meals. If someone had asked Cinderella, “Are there any kinds of household work that you particularly hate?” She probably would have answered, “Why, none, of course. Housework is my duty!” In the real world, however, most people have definite dislikes for certain sorts of household work. Two of these tasks are ironing clothes and washing dishes.Ironing clothes is most hated because it is not a task that can be completed quickly or thought-lessly. Each piece of clothing must be handled individually, so ironing a basket of laundry can take hours! After ironing a piece of clothing with great caution, which requires smoothing out the fabric, and following the seams, you need to place it on a hanger as soon as possible. If you do not follow these directions carefully, it might become wrinkled and you have to start over. Perhaps that is why ironing is not a favorite thing to do. It calls for extreme attention to detail from beginning to end.Another household job that many people dislike is washing dishes. Of course, some people claim that this work is no longer a problem because we have dishwashers now! However, no one would argue that dishes, silverware, and especially pots and pans washed in a dishwasher don’t come out as clean as they do when washed by hand. For this reason, many of us continue to wash our dishes by hand., but we are not necessarily happy doing it. Cleaning dishes is a job that not only take a lot of energy but also requires the patience to wash and dry them. In addition, unlike ironing clothes, washing dishes is a thing that usually must be done every day. I don’t know how Cinderella felt about this particular task, but I believe that most people hate it as much as I do.61. For Cinderella, doing household work is ______________.A. an assignmentB. a compulsionC. an obligationD. a burden62. Most people hate to do clothes-ironing because ________________.A. it has to be done by one personB. it must be handled skillfullyC. it involves careful planningD. it is time-consuming63. To avoid ironing the clothes over again, one should _______________.A. know how to iron certain clothes materialB. spare no care through all the proceduresC. find some proper hangers for the ironedD. pay special attention to the seams64. Many people still prefer washing dishes by hand to machine washing because________.A. hand-washed dishes are cleanerB. dishwashers are not so easily handledC. some dishes cannot be machine-washedD. washing dishes by hand is cheaper65.Ironing is different from dishwashing in that____________________.A. it requires patienceB. it is not a daily routineC. it is not laboriousD. it demands less care(4)Whenever I see anyone buying a National Lottery ticket I want to stop them and ask if they know just where their money is going. The lottery money is supposed to go to charity-but it makes me angry to see some of the so-called “good causes” it’s being used to support. Also, Camelot, the organizers, have made a profit of £10.8 million in five months. We hear now that a lot of that money is boosting the pay packets of the company’s bosses. For the past 10 years I’ve been helping to raise funds for cancer research charity called Tenovus. My husband, Sandy, died from cancer 11 years ago-he was only 51, There’s been a long line of deaths in our family through cancer and it’s been devastating, I’ve also lost two sisters-in-law, my brother, Michael, my father-in-law and my father, That’s apart from several close friends. The charity is 50 years old now and raises money mainly for breast cancer research. It also runs a support line for the families of cancer sufferers. Our local group raise money through dances, sales and coffee mornings, and all the funds go directly to cancer research. In 1993 Tenovus raised £3 million-and half that money came from sales of our own lottery tickets at supermarket, But our income has dropped by half since the National Lottery was introduced.I’m not against people playing the National Lottery, but they should think about what they’re doing. The chances of winning the jackpot are so small; they might as well throw their money away. The Government tells us that the proceeds are going to things like the arts and sports, but what about the National Health Service? They should give some cash to that, too. How can they justify spending ridiculous amounts of cash on so-called works of art-like displays of potatoes-or buying up Winston Churchill’s papers at a cost of £12 million? So who really are the winners in the National Lottery? When I think of all that money people could be donating to cancer research, I could weep. It’s time people realized how charities across the country are suffering because of the National Lottery. It’s disheartening and so infuriating.66. The writer seems to hope that___________.A. people will spend more money on the National LotteryB. people will give more money to charityC. most of the lottery money will go to charityD. most of the lottery money will be used for cancer research67. The reason why the writer raises funds for cancer research is that ______________.A. she herself is suffering from cancerB. the cancer is the most frightening diseaseC. a number of her relatives died of cancerD. some cancer research needs more money than other research68. In this text the writer is expressing____________.A. her personal opinionsB. the opinions of the general publicC. her feelings about cancer sufferersD. some ideas of fund-raising69. The organization “Tenovus” is _____________.A. run by a group of people in the writer’s townB. a charity organization which has some local groupsC. set up to collect money for people who lose their relativesD. set up to assist the National Lottery70. From the text we can conclude that ____________.A. the writer is enthusiastically supporting the National LotteryB. the writer has objections to the National LotteryC. the writer believes that the lottery money should be used for cancer researchD. the writer is just expressing her feelings about collecting money for charityⅤ. 2020年全国英语等级三级试题及答案(卷二)A wealthy Persian Prince loved good stories. The older he grew, the fonder he became of them. But he always regretted they had to have an end. So he decided to give half his wealth and his beautiful daughter to the man who could tell him a story without an end. Anybody who failed would be sent to prison for life. The risk was so great that nobody came to the palace to tell the Prince a story for a whole year. Then one day a tall, handsome youngman came and said he wanted to tell a story that would go on forever. The prince agreed but warned him what would happen if he failed. “The risk is worth the head of your fair daughter,”the young man replied poetically(得体地). Then, when it was up, made water-proof and made fire-proof, the King felt happy. But one day he noticed a small hole in the roof and as he looked at it, a locust came out with a grain of corn. A minute later, another locust came out with another grain of corn. Then a third locust with another grain of corn. Then a fourth locust, flying at great speed, pushed through the hole and came out with two grains of corn. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later theyagreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations (联想) —the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meanings for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of wordsis what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. Although we get on well with many people,we are usually friends with only a very few—for example, the average number of friends among students is about 6per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together but beyond that, the degree of intimacy (亲密) between them and the reasons for their shared interest vary greatly. As we get to know people,we take into consideration things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of first importance,it is more difficult to get on with people when there is an obvious difference in age and background. Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs,to have attitudes and interests in common—theyoften talk about “being on the same wavelength”. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to help friends and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and to accept differences of opinion. In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies (仪式) to strengthen the relationship between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful tie, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.36. According to the author______.A. all those who get on well with each other are friendsB friends are closer than people who just get on well with each otherC. everyone understands clearly how to make friendsD. every student has six friends37. In Paragraph 2, “being on the same wavelength” means ______.A. using the same frequency while talkingB. keeping the same friendly relationship as other people doC. having similar ideas, beliefs, attitudes and interestsD. having the same background39. Which of the following is false according to the passage ?A. Even friends may have differences of opinions.B. Friends never argue with each other.C. It generally takes time for people to become close friends.D. Someone’s habits may annoy his friends.40. To strengthen friendly relationship, people______.A. must hold friendship ceremoniesB. have to remove differences in backgroundC. should make friends with those who are of the same age and of the same raceD. should support and understand each other through shared experiences and emotionsPassage ThreeYou are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they merely fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!Of course he isn’t really dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast-moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professional. They do this for a living. These men are called “stuntmen”(特技演员). That is to say, they perform “tricks”There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress. Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the “chairs” are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the “glass” is made of sugar! But although their work depends on tricks of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on precise timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to j ump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured—and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a precipice (悬崖峭壁) a thousand feet high. His parachute (降落伞)failed to open—and he was killed.41. According to the passage, stuntmen are people who ______.A. are skilled in sports such as skiing and skatingB. often do things which are really dangerousC. are good at pretending to die on the spotD. only pretend to do dangerous things42. Stuntmen do this kind of work in order to ______.A. earn moneyB. enjoy themselvesC. have good luckD. fool the audience43. 前半句可以直译为“今天的年轻人一般都有比父母更强的购买力”,A项译文的内容比较准确,应为最佳翻译,可得2分。

②B项没有能够正确理解purchasing power的含义,误译为“赚钱”,还把be more prepared touse it误译为“时刻准备消费掉”,只能得1分。

③C项简单地从purchasing字面上猜测句子前半部分意思为“年轻人需要比父母多买东西”,完全曲解了原文意思,不能够得分。

Every transaction (交易) **munication. The objective of business is to produce and sell for a profit goods and services that satisfy society's needs and wants. Such goods and service are made available in a market. It is at the market that supply and demand are achieved in a purchase-sale transaction at a specific price. The profit is the seller's motive to engage in business.Successful enterprise management rests on three basic elements: leadership, motivation, **munication. When a highly **pany begins to go down, it is usually a consequence of incompetent leadership and a failure in communication is often found to be a contributing factor.Marketing is the performance of business activities that direct the flow of goods and services from producer to consumer or user. Simply to produce a product is not enough. The product must be transported, stored, priced, advertised, and sold to satisfy human needs and wants.Communication is a major part of international marketing. The right product must be offered for sale in the right place and at the right time and at the right price. And the right message must be communicated via the right media to the right market targets at the right time. It is necessary to provide the information that buyers need to make purchasing decisions. Marketing activities promote the exchange of goods. A qualified marketer must be a communications specialist.27. What is the topic of this passage?A. Goods and services.B. International marketing.C. The word "right" in the 5th paragraph can be best replaced by ______.A. properB. accurateC. trueD. exact31. This passage is most probably taken from ______.A. a dictionaryB. a textbookC. an advertisementD. an exercise-bookPassage TwoAdvertising can be thought of "as the means of making something known in order to buy or sell goods or services". Advertising aims to increase people's awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread message, and the press offers a fairly cheap method of advertizing. Magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema **mercial radio are useful for local markets. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Posters are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertising. We might ask whether the cost of advertising is paid for by the manufacturer or by the consumer. Since advertising forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertising. However, if large scale advertising leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertising on sales. When the market is growing, advertising helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertising may prevent a bigger fall in sales than what would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertising if they were not convinced of its value to them.32. Advertising is often used to ______.A. convince customersB. promote productionC. raise interestD. push the sales33. According to the passage, trade fairs (Paragraph 1) may ______.A. replace exhibitions and marketsB. supply local goods and servicesC. attract possible customersD. provide cheap amusements34. The author says that advertising can increase demand ______.A. in any period of salesB. in any circumstancesC. in a growing marketD. in a shrinking market36. What the last sentence of this passage actually tells us is that ______.A. businessmen usually do not pay more for advertising than they have toB. businessmen know well that advertising could bring them more profitsC. advertising couldn't convince people of the value of the goodsD. advertising usually costs businessmen large amounts of moneyPassage ThereIn America, where labow costs are so high, "do-it-yourself" is a way of life. Many people repair their own cars, build their own garages, even remodel their own houses. Soon they may also be writing their own books. In Hollywood there is a company that publishes children's books with the help of computers. Although other **panies also publish that way, this **pany is very unusual. It "personalizes" (让读者人物化) the books by having **puter make the reader the leading character in the story. Here is how they do it. Let us say your child is named Jenny. She lives on Oak Drive in St. Louis, has a dog named Spot, a cat named Tabby, and three playmates whose names are Besty, Sandy, and Jody. **puter uses this information to fill out a story that has already been prepared and illustrated. The story is then printed with standard equipment as a hardcover book. A child who receives such a book might say, "This book is about me. " **pany therefore calls itself the "Me-Books Publishing Company".Children like the me-books because they like to see in print their own names and the names of their friends and their pets. But more important, " personalization" has been found to be an important tool in developing enthusiasm for reading. Me-books are thus helping a child to learn how to read, by appealing to that natural desire to see his own name in print.37. In America, people do most things by themselves because ______.A. labour is too expensiveB. they don't trust othersC. they can do better than othersD. nobody is ready to help38. The word "remodel" (Sentence 1, Paragraph 1) is similar in meaning to ______.A. transformB. rebuildC. replaceD. decoratePassage FourAlmost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people subscribe to as many as two or three different newspapers. But why do people read newspapers?Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings—battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown or killed—took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in faraway countries on the same day they happen.Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and, of course, advertisements. There are all sorts of advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by **panies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for their advertising space, but it is worth the money, for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country. The new system is designed to give a warming seconds before an earthquake strikes. That may not sound like very long. However, it could give people time to get under a table. The flow of electric power or gas could be cut, air traffic controllers could warn away pilots. Evenso-called “smart buildings” could be designed to get ready.Richard Allen of the University of Wisconsin and Hiroo Kananmori of the California Institute of Technology developed the program. They call it the Earthquake Alarm System. A report published in Science magazine describes it.The system uses a mathematical program to measure information collected by instruments placed across the Los Angeles area. Southern California already has more than 150 stations that measure movements within the ground. The information they collect is sent to a high-speed computer. The new system is designed to estimate the strength of the earthquake once the shaking starts. Areas directly above the center of the earthquake would have the least warning. Distant places might have as long as forty seconds.Professor Allen notes that an early warning system for earthquakes would require a major campaign of public education. Then, another problem is the possibility of false alarms.48.
