1Title: "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee"To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee is more than just a story; it's a profound lesson in humanity, justice, and the complexities of the human conscience. Set in the 1930s in the Deep South of the United States, the story revolves around the experiences of Scout and her brother, Jem, growing up in a world tainted with deep-seated racial prejudice. Their father, Atticus Finch, an attorney, represents a black man accused of raping a white woman, showcasing the brutalities and injustices of racial discrimination. The narrative is a powerful exploration of the loss of innocence. Scout, through her eyes, witnesses the ugliness of society, but also learns about the strength of human dignity and morality from her father. The book's central theme, the moral nature of human beings, is explored through various incidents in the town of Maycomb, giving readers a profound understanding of the importance of empathy and compassion.Lee's writing style is captivating, with a blend of humor and gravity. She captures the voice of the young Scout brilliantly, allowing readers to see the world through the eyes of a child, yet understanding the complexities of the adult world. The character development, especially that of Atticus Finch, is remarkable, embodying the ideals of integrity and righteousness. In conclusion, "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers across generations. It serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up for what is right, despite the pressures and prejudices of society. The book's powerful message about human nature and the moral compass within each of us is a valuable lesson for all. 2Title: "1984" by George OrwellGeorge Orwell's "1984" is a chilling portrayal of a dystopian future where totalitarianism has extinguished the very essence of humanity. The novel introduces us to Winston Smith, a low-ranking member of the ruling Party in the nation of Oceania. The Party, led by Big Brother, exercises absolute power and control over its citizens, employing advanced technology and psychological manipulation to maintain its grip.Orwell masterfully crafts a world where independent thought is a crime, and the truth is what the Party deems it to be. The concept of "Newspeak," a language designed to limit the freedom of thought, and "doublethink," the ability to accept two contradictory beliefs simultaneously, are particularly haunting elements of the Party's control. The narrative follows Winston's struggle against the omnipresent surveillance and oppressive regime. His forbidden relationship with Julia and their subsequent downfall serve as a microcosm of the larger conflict between individuals and the totalitarian state. The themes of love, freedom, and the loss thereof are explored through Winston's anguished consciousness.Orwell's prescient vision of a bleak future is both terrifying and thought-provoking. His masterful storytelling ability draws readers into a world that is both eerily familiar and utterly nightmarish. "1984" serves as a stark warning about the dangers of unchecked political power and the erosion of individual freedoms. It's a critical examination of the very nature of truth and the cost of sacrificing principles in the face of oppression. In conclusion, "1984" is not just a novel; it's a profound commentary on the potential dystopian future that awaits us if we fail to safeguard our freedoms and独立思考。

if we look closely at the way that the houyhnhnms act, we can see that in fact swift does not takethem seriously: he uses them to show the dangers of pride.first we have to see that swift does not even take gullver seriously.for instance, his name sounds much like gullible, which suggests that he will believe anything.also, when he first sees the yahoos and they throw excrement on him, he responds by doing the same in return until they run away.he says, i must needs discover some more rational being, even though as a human he is already the most rational being there is.this is why swift refers to erasmus darwins discovery of the origin of the species and the voyage of the beagle-to show how gulliver knows that people are at the top of the food chain.but if lemule gulliver is satirized, so are the houyhnhnms, whose voices sound like the call of castrati.they walk on two legs instead of four, and seem to be much like people.as gulliver says, it was with the utmost astonishment that i witnessed these creatures playing the flute and dancing a vienese waltz.to my mind, they seemed like the greatest humans ever seen in court, even more dextrous than the lord edmund burke .as this quote demonstrates, gulliver is terribly impressed, but his admiration for the houyhnhnms is short-lived because they are so prideful.for instance, the leader of the houyhnhnms claims that he has read all the works of charles dickens, and that he can singlehandedly recite the names of all the kings and queens of england up to george ii.swift subtly shows thatthis houyhnhnms pride is misplaced when, in the middle of the intellectual competition, he forgets the name of queen elizabeths husband.swifts satire of the houyhnhnms comes out in other ways as well.one of the most memorable scenes is when the dapple grey mare attempts to woo the horse that guenivre has brought with him to the island.first she acts flirtatiously, parading around the bewildered horse.but when this does not have the desired effect, she gets another idea: as i watched in amazement from my perch in the top of a tree, the sorrel nag dashed off and returned with a yahoo on her back who was yet more monstrous than mr.pope being fitted by a clothier.she dropped this creature before my nag as if offering up a sacrifice.my horse sniffed the creature and turned away.it might seem that we should take this scene seriously as a failed attempt at courtship, and that consequently we should see the grey mare as an unrequited lover.but it makes more sense if we see that swift is being satiric here: it is the female houyhnhnm who makes the move, which would not have happened in eighteenth-century england.the houyhnhm is being prideful, and it is that pride that makes him unable to impress gullivers horse.gulliver imagines the horse saying, sblood, the notion of creating the bare backed beast with an animal who had held mr.pope on her back makesme queezy .a final indication that the houyhnmns are not meant to be taken seriously occurs when the leader of the houynhms visits lilliput, where he visits the french royal society.he goes into a room in which a scientist is trying to turn wine into water (itself a prideful act that refers to the marriage at gallilee).the scientist has been working hard at the experiment for many years without success, when the houyhnmn arrives and immediately knows that to do: the creature no sooner stepped through the doorway than he struck upon a plan.slurping up all the wine in sight, he quickly made water in a bucket that sat near the door . The Count of Monte Cristo英语名著读书笔记Three Days to See大学英语的读书笔记范文英语读书笔记Ode To A Nightingale外国名著英语读书笔记Gone with the wind关于英语的读书笔记英语老师读书笔记《小学英语新课程课堂教学案例》英语名著读书笔记The Old Man and the Sea。

篇一:《傲慢与偏见》Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters. The characters have their own personalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters. Mr. Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr. Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different. Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others.Elizabeth is a clever girl who always has her own opinion. Mary likes reading classic books. (Actually she is a pedant.) Kitty doesn’t have her own opinion but likes to follow her sister, Lydia. Lydia is a girl who follows exotic things, handsome man, and is somehow a little profligate. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century. The family of gentleman in the countryside is Jane Austen’s favourite topic. But this little topic can reflect big problems. It concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in Britain in her century. You can find these from the very beginningof this book. The first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads: “It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”. The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession.People always think that Austen was an expert at telling love stories. In fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economic needs. After reading this book, I know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man.I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. If you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, I must mention the situation in Britain at that time. Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions. Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. Jane Austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century. In “Pride and Prejudice”, the sister of Mr. Bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying Jane because the Bennets don’t have many possessions and their social positions are much lower than them. From this, we can see there are a lot of obstacles for a not very rich woman to marry a wealthy husband. The society, the relatives would not allow them to get married. In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “moneydetermines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind.A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help thinking: ca n money determine everything?Austen left this problem for us to think. The genius of Jane Austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity that reflects big problems. Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote “Pride and Prejudice”, her sharp observ ation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. Today, her book still can be the guide telling us the economic relationships both at her time and in modern time. The Old Man And The Sea 《老人与海》The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works.Told in language of great simplicity and power,it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal——a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts,in strikingly contemporary style, the classic thene of courage in the face of defeat,of personal triumph won from los.Written in 1952,this hugely successfully novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a huge part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. The novel is very famous in the world, so lot of people like this novel. We also studied it in our Chinese class, Hemingway's novel are alwaysinteresting I like his novel much, also in his novel we can learn a lot by his meanings. It’s really a good novel for people to read. 篇三:《双城记》After reading "A tale of two cities" "A tale of two cities" is one of Dickens's most important representative works. The novel profoundly exposed the society contradiction before the French Revolution, intensely attacks the aristocratic social clais dissolute and cruel, and sincerely sympathizes with the depressed classes. The novel also described many magnificent scenes like the revolt people attacked Bastille and so on,which displayed people's great strength. The novel has portrayed many different people. Doctor Manette is honest and kind but suffers the persecution actually ,Lucie is beautiful and gentle ,Charles is graceful and noble,Lorry is upright and honest ,Sydney is semblance of indifferent, innermost feelings of warm, unconventional but also selfleand lofty,MiProis straightforward and loyal,Evremonde brothers are cruel and sinister......The complex hatred is hard to solve, the cruel revenge has made more hatreds, loves rebirth in the hell edge, but take the life as the price. As an outstanding writer,in Dickens's work, the language skill is essential. Each kind of rhetoric technique, like the analogy, the exaggeration, the contrast, the humorous, and the taunt are handled skillfully, and the artistry of the work is also delivered the peak."A tale of two cities" has its difference with the general historical novel, its character and the main plot are all fictionalizes. With the broad real background of the French Revolution, the author take the fictional character Doctor Manette's experience as the main clue, interweaves the unjust charge, upholstery and so many techniques, causes the structureintegrity and strictness, the plot winding anxious and rich of theatrical nature,it displayed the remarkable artistic skill.the style "A tale of two cities" is solemnity and melancholy, fills indignantion, but lacks the humor of the early works.。

IntroductionReading makes a full man conference a ready man and writing an exact man. We got a lot of fun from reading. Reading could not only eich our minds but also entertain the souls. In the short term, by reading the short stories of the famous worldwide writers like Ernest Hemingway, Edgar, Allan Poe, Mark twain, I got a better understanding about them.ments on the StoriesSimple words and common stories feature largely in the novels of Ernest Hemingway. But it is not difficult to find that, only by pondering could we uncover the truth hidden by the appearance of the brief words. For example, A Clean Well -Lighted Place, in this story there are no complicated words, no magnificent sentences and even no attracting plots. But it was the simple story reveals the nada of life. An old man, who wants to drive away the loneliness, always drinks in the bar. Two waiters, one is young and newly married, hurried to go home every night. The other one, who is older, along could feel sympathy and understand the old man. The depressing and gloomy setting, the vivid characters and the arrangement of the plot even the refined words make the theme clearly .People would like to get rid of the nada of life. They need communication, they want understanding and they hate loneliness. While Edgar Allan Poe who was well known for his short stories, wrote about seventy stories which fall into two categories: those of mystery and horror; and those of ratiocination, which might be said to have set the standard for the modern detective stories. The Tell Tale Heart, oneof Edgar Allan Poe?s most famous short stories, is a psychological portrait of a mad narrator who kills a man and aferterward hears his victim?s relentless heartbeat. At the very beginning, the plot of the story: “True! Nervous, very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and I am.” Attracts the reader?s heart and fixes our eyes on the next plots. The narrator told us such a story that is how a guy planned and killed an old man but finally ,he was defeated by himself .In the whole story, a large number of psychological description created a terroristic atmosphere .The weird and exciting content shocked us again but the beautiful words feast our eyes. However Mark Twain is an outstanding humorist and satirist. H wrote many volumes during his long life time .In his later years ,he began to focus on human greed ,cruelty and questioned the humanity of the human race ,one of his most famous stories “Is He Living or Dead?? include several obvious themes .First , the riches are cold and detached and crazy about the luxury. Second, the relationship between the sacrifice and rewards. Third, the great importance of the medium?s function. The whole passage developed around the three themes which acted the important clues. Finally, it reflected Mark Twain?s humorous and ironic writing style. Young Goodman Brown was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne who was an American novelist and short story writer in the 19th century, born in Salem, Massachusetts as Nathaniel Hawthorne He was greatly influenced by Puritanism, Transcendentalism and Mysticism, which can be traced in his works. Much of Hawthorne?s writing centers on New England and many feature moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic Movement. His themes often centers on the inherent evil and sin of humanity and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity. The narrator illustrated the story though Brown?s travel in the darkforest. He adopted the expressing way of symbolism to show his ideas, For example, the themes, characters and the setting. The story happened on one night .Faith was scared of nights: please put off your journey until suise and sleep in your own bed tonight ,a love woman is troubled with such dreams and such thoughts that she?s afraid of herself sometimes. Pray tarry with me this night, dear, husband, of all nights in the year. But Brown replied,?? of all nights in the year ,this one night must I tatty away from you ,my journey, as you called it forth and back again ,must need be done between now and suise .the dark nights made Brown tarry away with faith and believing . In the literary works, the dark nights were always connected to guilty, mystery, hell and so on .The Christians chose days to go to the churches and expressed their wills to kindness. Well how was the travel in the evening? Brown? purposes of the dark night?s travel were not clear at first. But with the appearance of the guide and his unveiled identity, he found it was a ?evil? discover of his ancestors and so called the loyal Christians. The ?evils? conflicts with the ?kindness?. So he could only proceed in the dark nights. In fact, plenty of words used to describe the ?black? also created a kind of gloomy atmosphere for his lost hopes life. So many years passed but millions of readers appreciate his works all the time.OscaWilde(1854~1900)was an Irish essayist ,playwright ,novelist ,fairytale ,writer and poet .Known for his biting wit ,he became one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian and one of the greatest celebrities of his day . In 1888, he published “The Happy Prince and other tales, fairy-stories written for his two sons .It is most famous for the Happy Prince, the short tale of a metal statue who becomes friends with a migratory bird together then bring some happiness to others in life and in death. After reading the story, I was shocked by the small swallow and theprince, because of selfless and sacrifice .And they are worth of respectation .In our real life, Leifeng, a model for the people of our party and the people?s army is an outstanding one, he lines to serve the people as the greatest happiness. The next story I read was Eve line, written by James Joyce .He is an Irish novelist, noted for his experimental use of language in such works as Finnegan?s Wake (1939) .Eve line is taken from his works Dubliners, written in 1905.The theme of this collection is the numb situation of Dubliners .The heroine of this novel is Eve line, who leads such kind of numb living. She works in a shop and almost everyone can order her to do things, at home she lives together with her ill-tempered father, however she has no courage to go away with her lover to have a new life.In this story, the themes shows that Old orders of life, the desire for dreams mustbe destroyed by the cruel reality, if the Irish wants spiritual emancipation, they must deny the degenerate traditions completely. It also worked as a warning .And in Joyce?s technical innovations in the art of the novel include an extensive use of interior monologue; he used a complex network of symbolic parallels drawn from the mythology, history, and literature and created a unique language of invented words, puns and allusions. The final story I read was Alice Walker?s ?Every day use for your grandmamma? Alice Walker is one of the most remarkable and influential Afro go-American writers in contemporary American literary world .She is one of the majority of critics .As a black woman ,writer ,her background provides the sources of her work ,especially work describing colored people?s life .The modern classic ?Every day use for your grandmamma? tells the story of a mother and her two daughters?complexing ideas about their identitiesand ancestry .the mother narrates the story of the day one daughter,Dee,visites from college and clashes with the other daughter ,Maggie ,over the possession of the some heirloom quilts . The quilts in the story are symbolized as the African American culture heritages .By presenting the two daughters? means of treating the quilts in the story .Walker reveals different attitudes on these heritages, which to some extend were confused by black people in America. T he theme of the story spoke highly of the loyalty of protecting mother and Maggie?s own identity and cultural tradition ,but condemn Dee, a traitor of his people?s belief . This story tells that in the day before Christmas, a poor young couple exchanged gifts by sold the most precious thing of each, but resulted or detracted, the twoprecious gifts all became useless things. While they got the most precious thing than any material objects——love. After read this story, I learned how to respect others’ love and how to love others. In this story, they all lost the most valuable things——Jim’s golden watch and Della’s beautiful hair. Behind this, I saw they loved each other infinitely. They loved their family, they let me feel that cold Christmas Eve has become the warm heaven just because of their gifts. If Della only took one dollar and eighty-seven cents to pick gift, this story will probably lacking of shocking, and also cannot cause readers’ thinking. In this materialistic society, people often use money to measure gifts. When bags of gifts which are packaged delicately in front of us, what can we see except empty and blank? Parents feel happy because of our simple greeting cards in their birthday, because of a few words of blessing. These gifts, simple but true. It can’t be compared with thosewhich built with a lot of money, outlined by luxuriance. What clever gifts! In some sense, they are invaluable.Yes, in this materialistic society, some people think money iseverything, the one who owns money, who owns all. No wonder a great amount of girls became mammonists, and want to marry the richer, no wonder more and more men think that there is no true love, what girls love is their money. But I always believe sincere love is existed and it’s priceless. Even if you have millions of money, you can’t change it into true love. Maybe money can let you get some feelings from girls, but those are hypocritical. When you no longer possess vast wealth, the hypocritical feelings will ended and left you extremely painful finally. Jim and Della were a happy couple, although they were poor, living in short of money. In their hearts, money is not important, the important thing is the affection from each other. As long as they have it, they felt happier thanany millionaire.Maybe some people will pour scorn on it and cannot understand what their done. If there is a good fortune and a sincere feeling in front of you at the same time, which one will you choose? I wouldn’t hesitate to choose the later, because sincere feeling is priceless! I believe that truepay will have sincere return finally, and the one who have true love can have his or her happiness.Nowadays, more and more people have been pressed to lose their breath by the reality. They forgot the persons they love, and the persons who love them. We need to care about others, no matter how muchmoney we have. What our loved one need is how our concern about him or her. In some important days, don’t forget to bring him or her some gifts. No matter what is it, how valuable is it, he or she would like it anyway. Because it is the gift of the Magi.李刚学号:20xx213034557。

Most people will choose the latter. But what will be your choice if the cost is laying your lover among the risks? What willit be if the cost is you can never tell the girl, who you love so much, that you love her? The ider man had this contradiction. But finally he still chose the latter, not in order to be a hero, but to make this word peaceful.I was so moved by the words the Aunt Mary said:You will never guess what he wants to be, the ider man. He knows the hero when he sees one, too a few characters out there, flying all around out there, saving old girls like me. Lord knows kids like Henryneed hero courageous, sacrificing for people, setting exles for all of us. Everybody loves a hero. People enthrone them, cheer them, scream their names and years later they will tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse the one who taught them to hold on to stand longer. I believe there is a hero in all of us. They keep us be honest, give us strength, make us noble, and finally allow us to die with proud. Ever though sometimes we have to initiatively give up the thing we want most, even our dreams. Spider man did that for Henry, so he wants to know where he is gone. He needs him.The ider man got much from these words, so did I. And what about you? what's the hero lying in you?
