-------Appreciation of Translation

I’ll introduce a novel to you ,the name of which is Everything I Never Told You wrriten by Celeste Ng.There’s no such thing called virsion comparation as only one version has been published at present. Therefore,the passage will foucs on the appreciation of the translation translated by Lu Sun.And due to time’s reason,we only anlyze part of the chapter I.

原文：1.Lydia is dead,but they don’t kown this yet.

译文：莉迪亚死了，但是他们还不知道。

翻译赏析：At the beging of the whole story,the translator hands well with its plain but thought-provoking words.She translates them literally.

原文：2.And in her chair in the cornor of the kitchen,Lydia’s sister hunches

moon-eyed over her cornflakes,sucking them to pieces one by one,waiting for Lydia’s appear.It’s she who says,at last,”Lydia’s taking a long time today.”

译文：莉迪亚的妹妹坐在厨房角落的一把椅子上，盯着碗里的麦片，一片一片地吸进嘴里抿碎，等待着莉迪亚的出现。最后，她不耐烦地说：“莉迪亚今天真能磨蹭。”

翻译赏析：As the matter of fact,the original text doesn’t show the impatience to Lydia directly but to show it through detailed action description of Lydia’s

sister.However,the writer translates it through her own understanding ,which contributes to readers’ good understanding.

原文：3.When the children have gone,she takes a mug from the cupboard,trying to keep her hands still.

译文：孩子们出门后，玛丽琳从碗柜里拿出一只马克杯。

翻译赏析：After your careful reading the sentence you will easily find Lu Sun nelegted trying to keep her hands still ,which is more simple than before.Even so,I do think translation should be faithful to the original vision about this sentence.

原文：4.Lydia,still small enough to cradle,had secrets.

译文：乳臭未干的莉迪亚竟然有了小秘密。

翻译赏析：The idiom here is used so properly,vividly and easily to understand.The little girl is so pretty and so young,but she did something really special and kind of out her age,which gives Marilyn too much surprise and kindles a spark of hope.

原文：5.A woman built like a sofa cushion,who still wore her fading red hair in a beehive.

译文：身材如同沙发靠垫，褪了色的红发高耸地盘在头顶。

翻译赏析：Beehive means a hairstyle for a woman,with the hair piled high on top of the head.And built means a solid or strong body.This sentence describes the woman in

a extract way ,vividly and humorously.Beehive hair in Chinese can be translated as “蜂窝状的头发”，and here Lu Sun translate is as “（褪色的红发）高耸地盘（在头顶上）”，more figuratively than literal translation.

原文：6”I’ll have someone run down ti that classroon and check.”There’s a thud as the secretary sets the receiver down on the desk.

译文：“我找人去教室看看。”说完，校务秘书“砰”的一声把听筒放在桌上。

翻译赏析：As we read the original text and the translation we can easily find the word order has been adjusted in a way more familar to Chinese,which makes reading more coherently.

原文：7.She replaces the phone number on the board,her damp fingers smudging the ink so that the digits blulr as if in a strong wind,or underwater.

译文：她把卡片放回原位，手指上的汗抹在了卡片上，墨迹洇开了，号码变得模糊不清，犹如被狂风吹乱，又像是掉进了水里。

翻译赏析：Smudge as a verb is to touch or rub sth,especially wet ink or paint.Blur ,to make sth less clear and sharp,is always used as a verb.Lu Sun added a sentence that “墨迹洇开了” and overturned the word order.In this sentence that Fingers smudged the ink the translaters tranlated it into two parts, which contributes to a more concret action description.

原文：8.she’d gonet to the store to buy cigarettes for her father,and two d ays later they found her body by the side of the road,halfway to Charlottesville,strangled and naked. 译文：金妮去商店给她父亲买烟，然后就不见了，两天后，人们在距离夏洛特斯维尔还有一半里程的路边发现了金妮赤裸的尸体。她是被勒死的。

翻译赏析：Strangle ,to kill sb by squeezing or pressing on their troat and neck,is used as passive voice.However,strangled and naked have different meanings and uaually hard to be used in a sentence in Chinese.Hence,the translator added a short sentence that“她是被勒死的”,emphasizing the horrible and miserable death.

原文：9.Morning sun fills the house ,creamy as lemon chiffon,lighting the insides of cupboard and empty closets and clean,bare floors.

译文：上午的阳光洒满房间，有着柠檬戚风蛋糕般的细腻质感，照亮了碗柜、空衣橱的内部和光洁的地板。

翻译赏析：Fill here is translated as “洒满”，which gives a sence of brisk and joy.

原文：10.For James,in his office ,it is still another Tuesday,and he clicks his pen against his teeth.

译文：办公室里，詹姆斯拿着钢笔敲击着自己的牙齿，对他而言，今天不过是又一个平凡的星期二。

翻译赏析：The translater put“he clicks his pen against his teeth” advance ,protuding the normal boring life of James.
