For ships equipped with an Inmarsat SES, sending a distress alert is both simple and certain. It only involves pressing a special distress button or using an abbreviated dialing code. This automatically gives priority access to the system and establishes contact with a CES via the Inmarsat satellite. The SES operator can choose the most suitable CES for the communication service required, as long as the CES is within the same ocean region as the SES. The shore Inmarsat user does not have the flexibility and is limited to using the CES through which his local PTT administration has a routing agreement for a particular ocean region.

When activated in a distress situation, a SART responds to radar interrogation by transmitting a swept frequency signal which generates as a line of 12 blips code on a radar screen outward from the SART's position along its line of bearing. Displayed on the PPI, the spacing between each pair of dots will be 0.6 nautical miles. In order to distinguish the SART from other responses it is preferable to use a radar scale between 6 and 12 nm, this will assist in differentiating between the SART and other responses. As the search craft approaches to within about 1 nautical mile of the SART, the blip dots will change into wide arcs, and even become complete circles as the SART is closed and becomes continually triggered.
