Yet although William was very rich by the standard of his time, he had nothing like a flush toilet (抽水马桶), paper towels, or riding lawn mower (除草机). How did he get by?History books are filled with wealthy people who were poor compared to me. I have storm windows, Croesus did not. Entire nations trembled(颤抖) before Alexander the Great, but he couldn't buy cat food. Czar Nicholas lacked an electric saw(电锯).Given how much better off I am than so many famous dead people, you'd think I'd be content. The trouble is that, like most people, I compare my wealth with that of living person: neighbors, school classmates, famous TV people. The greed(贪婪) I feel toward my friend Howard's new kitchen is not reduced by the fact that no kings ever had a refrigerator with glass doors,There is really no rising or falling standard of living. Over the centuries people simply find different things to feel sad about. My house is smaller than the houses of many bankers, but even so it has a lot more rooms than my wife and I can keep clean.Besides, to people looking back at our age from a century or two in the future, these bankers' fancy furniture and my own old Formica will seem equally shabby(寒酸的), I can't keep up with my neighbors right now. But just wait.24.What does the underlined phrase "get by" in the first paragraph mean?A . Succeed as a king.B . Deal with complains.C . Get some extra money.D . What's the author's attitude towards life?A . Doubtful.B . Optimistic.C . Uncaring.D . Cautions.CIf English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?According t o a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the greater the effect is, the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals”, also called second language learners (SLL) before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language. ” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two lang uages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的), ” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas. ”The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another w orld. ” explained the scientists.28. The main subject talked about in this passage is ______.A. science on learning a second languageB. man’s ability of learning a second languageC. language can help brain powerD. language learning and maths study29. In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to ______.A. say language is also a kind of physical laborB. prove that one needs more practice when he is learning a languageC. show the importance of using the language when you learn the languageD. make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well30. We may know from the scientific findings that ______.A. the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density isB. there is no difference between a later SLL and one not knowing a second languageC. the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people’s brainD. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time31. The unde rlined word “bilingual” probably means ______.A. a researcher on language learningB. a person who is good at learning foreign languagesC. a person who can speak two languagesD. an active language learnerDWhy do people drink too much, eat too much, smoke cigarettes or take drugs? What’s to blame for all the bad behavior? Most people would say that, while these self-destructive (自我毁灭的) acts can have many root causes, they all have one obvious thing in common: they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power to resist them.According to a recent study, however, if you really think about it, something about that simple answer doesn’t quite make sense. In fact, it turns out that sometimes it’s having will power that really gets you into trouble.Think back to the time you took your very first sip (啜饮) of beer. Disgusting, wasn’t it? When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette — it tastes awful. So even though smoking, and drinking alcohol or coffee, can become temptation (诱惑) you need will power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requires a lot of self-control. Ironically (讽刺的是), only those who can control themselves well, rather than give in to them, can ever come to some day develop a “taste” for Budweiser beer, Marlboro cigarettes, or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee. We do it for social acceptance. We force ourselves to consume alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and even illegal drugs, in order to seem experienced, grown-up, and cool. These bad habits aren’t self-control failures — far from it. They are voluntary choices, and they are in fact self-control successes. Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmful. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control, but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.32. What do most people think causes bad behavior?A. Being forced by others.B. Not having enough will power.C. Enjoying their first experiences.D. Following the examples of their friends.33. The author mentions his experience in the third paragraph to prove ____.A. will power helps develop bad habits sometimesB. drinking beer is harmful to the health of teenagersC. self-control should be developed when one is youngD. everyone can be challenged by different temptations34. In the last paragraph, the author stresses that ____.A. without self-control, no one can succeedB. bad habits don’t always lead to bad resultsC. applying self-control correctly is importantD. people can develop wisdom from bad behavior35. What would be the best title for the passage?A. My First Sip of BeerB. Do You Have Will Power?C. Will Power Benefits UsD. Dark Side of Self-control第二节七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)Becoming Refreshed without sleepingSometimes there is just not enough hours in the day to get everything done and get a good night's rest.36. It was one night when I was driving my car down a two-lane highway at a high speed of about 60 miles an hour. Another car approached from the opposite direction at about the same spee d. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second. I wondered whether he might be thinking, as I was, how dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be put off by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden end. Though we had never spoken a word to each other, he relied on me in just the same way.Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level, we all rely on one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even with strangers. As technology shrinks our world, the need for cooperative action among nations is increasing. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly organized to identify the SARS virus, which saved thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a similar problem, one requiring coordinated action by police and intelligence forces across the world. We must recognize that our fates are not ours alone to control. In my own life, I’ve put great stock in personal responsibility. But, as the years have passed, I’ve also come to believe that there are moments when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of others. So, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a dark road, what we must learn is that the approaching light may not be a threat, but a shared moment of trust.6.The author considers very important.A.driving alone on a dark road B.independence of peopleC.cooperation to identify SARS virus D.shared trust and cooperation7.The author said that they depended on each other in the same way because .A.the approaching car was very dangerousB.they both drove their car at a terrific speedC.he might be killed out of the other’s careless drivingD.it was dark and the highway road was a two-lane road8.From the second paragraph, we know the author drew the important lesson from .A.only one experienceB.many similar experiencesC.a driver on a dark roadD.many friends and strangers9.The need for cooperation increases because .A.peoples’ fates can’t be controlled by themselvesB.the SARS virus spread quicklyC.terrorism can happen everywhereD.the world is smaller than before10.We can infer from the last paragraph that the author has .A.believed in one’s own personal responsibilityB.counted upon himself alone in everythingC.had no trust in others’ good faith and judgmentD.had a change on his viewpoint of lifePassage 3Scientists claim that children who have low levels of self-control at three are more likely to have health and money problems and a criminal record by the age of 32, regardless of background and IQ.Researchers from Britain, the U.S. and New Zealand analyzed data from two large studies in which children completed a range of physical tests and interviews to assess genetic and environmental factors that can shape their lives. They found that children with low self-control were more likely to have health problems in later life including high blood pressure, being overweight, breathing problems. They were also more likely to be dependent on things such as tobacco, alcohol and drugs, more likely to be single parents, have difficulty managing money and have criminal records.“Our study shows, for the first time, that willpower as a child really does influence your chances of a healthy and wealthy adulthood.”The researchers firstly looked at data from around 1,000 children born in New Zealand between April 1972 and March 1973.The participants’self-control was assessed by teachers, parents, observers and the children themselves and included things like having fear of failure, lacking persistence in reaching goals, being over-active and acting before thinking.Dr Moffitt's team then found that when the participants reached their early 30s, this impulsivity(冲动) and relative inability to think about the long-term gave them more problems with finances, including savings, owning a home and credit card debt. The children with lower self-control scores also scored highest for things like weight problems, having high cholesterol and high blood pressure. To support the findings, the researchers ran the same analysis on data from 500 pairs of twins in Britain. They found that the brother or sister with lower self-control scores at age five was more likely to start smoking, do badly at school and engage in anti-social behaviour at age 12.Dr Avshalom Capsi, who worked with Dr Moffitt on the study, said: “This shows that self-control is important by itself, apart from all other factors that brothers or sisters share, such as their parents and home life.”11. Which of the following statements about the findings is right?A. Children with a low IQ and good background are more likely to have low levels of self-controlB. One day, Sue left home to visit her mother. Expecting a whole day to relax, Brad was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favorite TV talk show on his first day off in months. “This will be like a walk in the park,” he’d told his wife. “I’ll look after the kids, and you can go visit your mom.”Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids”—Mike, Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.” When food had not appeared within thirty seconds, Randy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum. Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat(节拍). Mike chanted “Where’s my toast, where’s my toast” in the background. Brad realized his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.Life became worse after breakfast. Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head. Randy locked himself in the bath room, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants. Nobody could find clean socks, although they were before their very eyes. Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes. Brad knew the talk show had already started.By ten o’clock, things were out of control. Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter. Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils. Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands. Brad realized that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible. At exactly 11:17, Brad called the daycare centre (日托所). “I suddenly have to go into work and my wife’s away. Can I bring the boys over in a few minutes?” The answer was obviously “yes” because Brad was smiling.16. This text is developed ________ .A. by spaceB. by comparisonC. by processD. by timePassage 5Hero is an inspiring word. Everybody worships heroes and even wants to be a hero himself. But what is a hero? I mean, what is a true hero?Despite the great differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people.A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.Heroes serve principles and society larger than themselves. A hero should be willing to help others, and determined to change the world into a better place. He should be thoughtful to the people around. And when disadvantaged groups are treated unfair, he will have enough courage to speak for them. In other words, a hero should care for the society. The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more meaningful?Heroes are catalysts (催化剂) for change. They have a vision from the mountaintop. They have the skill and the charm to move ordinary people. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., we might still have segregated (隔离的) buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for great change to occur without leaders with powerful personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain.21. Although heroes may come from different cultures, they ________.A. generally possess certain inspiring characteristicsB. probably share some weaknesses of ordinary peopleC. are often influenced by previous generationsD. all unknowingly attract a large number of fans22. According to Paragraph3 and Paragraph 4, which of the following statements could the author NOT agree to?A. A hero is usually famous.B. A hero must be a lover of adventure.C. A hero should be one who is more willing to serve others more than himself.D. A hero should not only be thoughtful but also brave.23. Madonna and Michael Jackson are not considered heroes because ________.A. they are popular only among certain groups of peopleB. their performances do not improve their fans morallyC. their primary concern is their own financial interestsD. they are not clear about the principles they should follow24. Gandhi and Martin Luther King are typical examples of outstanding leaders who ________.A. are good at demonstrating their charming charactersB. can bring changes to society in their timesC. are capable of meeting all challenges and hardshipsD. can provide an answer to the problems of their people25. The author concludes that historical changes would ________.A. be delayed without leaders with inspiring personal qualitiesB. not happen without heroes making the necessary sacrificesC. take place if there were heroes to lead the peopleD. produce leaders with attractive personalitiesPassage 6A new study shows that stress affects how the brain thinks about the advantages and disadvantages, causing it to focus on pleasure and ignore the possible negative consequences of a decision. The research suggests that stress may change the way people make choices in predictable ways.“Stress affects how people learn,” says Professor Mara Mather. “People learn better about positive than negativ e outcomes under stress.”For example, two recent studies looked at how people learned to connect images(影像) with either rewards or punishments. In one experiment, some of the participants were first stressed by having to give a speech and do difficult math problems in front of an audience; in the other, some were stressed by having to keep their hands in ice water. In both cases, the stressed participants remembered the rewarded material more accurately and the punished material less accurately than those who hadn’t gone through the stress. This phenomenon is likely not surprising to anyone who has tried to resist eating cookies or smoking a cigarette while under stress –at those moments, only the pleasure associated with such activities comes to mind. But the findings further suggest that stress may bring about a double effect. Not only are rewarding experiences remembered better, but negative consequences are also easily recalled. The research also found that stress appears to affect decision-making differently in men and women. While both men and women tend to focus on rewards and less on consequences under stress, their responses to risk turn out to be different.Men who had been stressed by the cold-water task tended to take more risks in the experiment while women responded in the opposite way. In stressful situations in which risk-taking can pay off big, men may tend to do better, when caution weighsmore, however, women will win. This tendency to slow down and become more cautious when decisions are risky might also help explain why women are less likely to become addicted than men: they may more often avoid making the risky choices that eventually harden into addiction.26. We can learn from the passage that people under pressure tend to ______.A. keep rewards better in their memoryB. recall consequences more effortlesslyC. make risky decisions more frequentlyD. learn a subject more effectively27. About the two experiments mentioned in the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A. The experiments are intended to find out how people learn about the positive and negative outcomes under stress.B. In each experiment, all the participants were stressed by doing certain tasks.C. The experiments show that stressed participants remembered positive aspects more accurately.D. The experiments can explain the reason why it is so difficult for the smokers to quit smoking under stress.28. What does the underlined phrase “pay off” in Paragraph 7 most probably mean?A. Succeed.B. Reward.C. Finish the payment.D. Pay the price.29. The research has proved that in a stressful situation ______.A. women find it easier to fall into certain habitsB. men have a greater tendency to slow downC. women focus more on outcomesD. men are more likely to take risks30. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. Stress affects how people learn.B. Stress makes people consider the advantages more.C. Decision-making under stress.D. Stress affects decision-making differently in men and women.第二节信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)下面是一篇应用文及其应用场合的信息,请阅读下列应用文和相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

Some worker ants get food and feed it to young ants. They are like farmers gathering food for people to eat. When the young ants eat the food, they give out a liquid that the grown-up ants can eat. In some colonies, the ants feed liquid food to a few special workers. These workers store it in their stomachs, which become very large. They spend all their time in the nest giving out liquid to whoever needs it, just like the person who runs a store. Ants are ruled by a queen ant. She spends all her time laying eggs, and the worker ants take care of her. New queens come to rule a colony in many different ways. Another kind of ant queen takes her young with her and hides in some other colony. She gets some of the workers to feed her young instead of the old queen's young. "My family has been watching the 'Super Girl' singing competition TV programme. My little daughter asked me what 'PK' meant, but I had no idea," explained the puzzled father. To a lot of Chinese young people who have been playing games online, it is impossible not to know this term. In such Internet games, "PK" is short for "Player Kill", in which two players fight until one ends the life of the other. In the case of the "Super Girl" singing competition, "PK" was used to refer to the stage where two singers have to compete with each other for only one chance to go up in competition ranking.Like this father, Chinese teachers at high schools have also been finding their students' compositions using Internet jargons which are difficult to understand. A high school teacher from Tianjin asked her students to write compositions with simple language, but they came up with a lot of Internet jargons that she didn't understand."My 'GG' came back this summer from college. He told me I've grown up to be a 'PLMM'. I loved to 'FB' with him together; he always took me to the 'KPM'," went one composition."GG" means Ge Ge (Chinese pinyin for brother). "PLMM" refers to Piao Liang Mei Mei (beautiful girl). "FB" means Fu Bai (corruption). "KPM" is short for KFC, Pizza Hut and McDonald's.Some specialists welcome Internet jargons as a new development in language. If you do not even know what a Kong Long (dinosaur, referring to an ugly looking female) or a Qing Wa (frog, referring to an ugly looking male) is, you will possibly be regarded as a Cai Niao!13. I tore open the packet. My eyes were fixed on the word “congratulations.”I don’t remember ever smiling so wide. Then I looked at my financial(财政的)package. The cost of Dream School’s tuition(学费), room and board was around $ 40,000- an impossible sum! How could I afford to attend? What good reasons did I have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition? My other choices were good, solid schools even if they weren’t as famous as my first choice. In my mind, attending my dream university would be the only way to realize my dream of becoming a world-class writer. My parents understood how I felt. They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go wherever I would be happiest. But as I was always careful with money, I wasn’t sure what to do.One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents’ financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself. At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus (校园)including guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities, and sporting events on campus. As he spoke, I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with many great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring. As the president ended his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walkedout that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there. In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my “dream”university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me..17. How did the author feel when he started to read the letter?A. He was full of joy.B. He was lost in his dream.C. What does the author mainly want to say?A. Your second-choice college may actually be your best fit.B. You should consider comfort in your choice of schools.C. You should try your best to attend your dream school.D. Your choice of schools should be based on their fame. Ⅱ. 附加题 (共20小题 每小题2分,满分40分)Passage A阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后选择方框内所给的单词或短语,并用其适当的形式填空。

AI’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was ju st tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the more wonderful thing in the world.Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she’d said again, “it’s for Elizabeth. ”I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional”. But she lived “on the surface”.As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace— it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.1. Wouldn’t you think that competing at who has better driving abilities is pointless? If you ask me, I’d like to say, men know that women are better drivers but do not have the courage to admit the truth — women are queens of the road.Unlike men, women stop for directions when they have no idea as to where they are going. We don’t drive around for hours pointlessly wasting a tank of gas only to find ourselves heading in the wrong direction. Have you ever in a car with a man who is lost? He tells you to shut up when you begin to open your mouth. And every five minutes or so he takes a turn going forty-five miles per hour only to find out he’s made another wrong turn.Speeding is what men do best on the road. Traffic is not a race. There is a reason why men get more speeding tickets than women. Not because we trick to get out of tickets but only because we don’t get pulled over as frequently. We don’t speed. We have more intelligence than senselessly to put our own lives as well as the lives of others in danger. My largest issue with male drivers is how a majority of them drive with one hand on the wheel and the other hand doing only God knows what. The seat is backed as far as possible, and they’re totally lost into loud music beyond a necessary level. You don’t ever see women driving like that.I feel that the above evidence more than proves my points that women are not only better drivers but also safer drivers than men. We women rule the road. Oh, and men, if you want to continue criticizing women for being bad drivers, bring it on. We know you lack confidence, or else you wouldn’t be wasting your valuable time making jokes about the ones you may choose to spend the rest of your days with.9. If a woman driver feels lost, she will ___________.A. tell the man next to her to shut upB. take the wrong turns at a high speedC. stop the car and ask people for helpD. drive aimlessly for hours without stopping10. In Paragraph 3, the writer tries to tell us that ___________.A. women always have more responsibility for livesB. women often play tricks on the police in chargeC. men are more confident and more skillful in drivingD. men usually have to be pulled over to the roadsides11. Which of the following about men drivers worries the writer most?A. Making jokes about women.B. Not paying full attention.C. Not stopping for directions.D. Getting more speeding tickets.DWhen I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like ? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.I b rought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That’s just for you,” he said.“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about y ou is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.12. What did the father do after he had heard his daughter’s complaint?A. He told her not to pay any attention to what her“enemy” had said.B. He criticized her and told her to overcome her shortcomings.C. He told her to write down all that her“enemy” had said about her and pay atten tion only to the things that were true.D. He refused to take the list and have a look at it.13. What does “Week by week her list grew” mean?A. Week by week she discovered more shortcomings of mine and pointed them out to me.B. She had made a list of my shortcomings and she kept on adding new ones to it so that it was growing longer and longer.C. I was having more and more shortcomings as time went on.D. Week by week, my shortcomings grew more serious.14. Why did her father listen to her quietly?A. Because he believed that what her daughter’s “enemy” said was mostly true.B. Because he had been so angry with his daughter’s shortcomings that he wanted to show this by keeping silent for a while.C. Because he knew that his daughter would not listen to him at that moment.D. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill. One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman —Linda’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but I still wrote to her.She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagman is my mother. ”Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each others lives.
