ANatural selection is the process by which one type of animal within a species thrives because of certain characteristics that make it more likely to live than others in its group. The history of the peppered moth(灰蛾) is an example of the natural selection process. In 19th century England, certain types of peppered moths were able to better blend(融合)into their surroundings. During that time period, great changes were happening in Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution was part of this change, and with it came air pollution. Natural selection often takes hundred or even thousands of years to occur. For the peppered moth, this process occurred comparatively quickly. At the beginning of the Industrial Age, most peppered moths in England were light-colored and covered with black markings, although a few moths had dark-colored wings. Because the light-colored moths blended into the light-colored bark on the trees, they could not be easily seen by birds that would eat them. As the air grew more polluted, however, tree trunks became covered with soot(烟煤) and became darker. The light-colored moths became easy for birds tosee against the dark tree trunks. Since the dark-colored moths now had the advantage, theirnumbers grew. Within 50 years, the peppered moth went from being mostly light-colored to Array being mostly dark-colored.In the 20th century, the air cleared up, and the peppered moth population changed again. As tree trunks lighted due to less soot in the air, light-colored moths once again had an advantage. Their numbers increased as soot levels declined. Depending on their environment, the coloration of the moths helped them to be “naturally selected” to survive.1、Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “thrives” in the first paragraph?A.Reduces. B.Booms.C.Changes. D.Endangers.2、What can we infer about the peppered moth’s natural selection process?A.The length of time was unusual.B.The soot levels in England did not affect it.C.This type of color change was typical for moths.D.It was a good example of environmental protection.3、What’s the difference between light-colored and dark-colored moths?A.Dark-colored moths were originally easy to see on trees.B.Both kinds of moths preferred the dark-colored trees.C.Birds failed to see light-colored moths.D.The color of moths was unimportant.4、Which would most likely happen if soot darkened England’s trees again?A.Birds would eat fewer moths.B.Moths would not be able to stay alive.C.Light-colored moths would disturb people’s life.D.The population of dark-colored moths would increase.BA survey by an international temporary service agency found that U. S. managers believe that people with a sense of humour do better at their jobs, compared with those who have little or nosense of humour. In fact, about 96 percent of those surveyed said people with a sense of humourdo better. Array The survey went on to point out that the results suggest that a sense of humour may helplight-hearted employees keep their jobs during tough times. And, what's more, it may push them up the corporate ladder past their humourless colleagues. Why? It seems that those with a sense of humour are better communicators and better team players.Studies have shown that happy workers are more productive. In fact, a researcher at California State University found that humour could help the employees to release tension.Research done by psychologist Dr. Ashton Trice at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia showed that humour helps us think. When people feel stuck on important projects, they tend to feel angry or depressed. According to Dr. Trice's research, taking time out to laugh can help us to get rid of negative feelings and allow us to return to a task or move on to another project unaffected by past defeat. If humour is really this important, then why don't we use it more often on the job? Most likely, the main reason is that many people are unaware of the positive effects of humour in the workplace. However, it is important to realize that some humour is not suitable for the workplace, and that it is often used at wrong times.1、Most people think a sense of humour can ________.A.help you to do your work betterB.make you have a rich lifeC.make you pleased with your workD.help you to make more friends2、Many people don't use humour more in the workplace because __________.A.they like keeping silent when workingB.they don't know the positive effects of humourC.they think they should obey the rulesD.they don't like joking or laughing3、A person without a sense of humour is easier __________.A.to feel surprisedB.to get along withC.to be worriedD.to be successful Array 4、What is probably the best title for the article?A.People with a Sense of Humour.B.Humour Is Important in the Workplace.C.Humour and Humourless.D.Everyone Likes Humour.第三部分语言知识运用(共两节)第一节(每小题1分,满分20分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.For most people, graduation day is exciting. This increased efficiency can be achieved on watch by heaving all the navigational information in a central source off watch it is increased by reducing the time taken to complete chart updating and passage planning. The MAIB report identifies fatigue of the watch-keeping a one of the main causes of marine incidents. If ECDIS reduce fatigue by improving efficiency both on watch and off watch, the system will directly contribute to safety. The same report also stated that the hydrographic community should band together to promote ECDIS as a factor to improve safety and efficiency. In fact, new, ECDIS-enable procedures may allow many shipping companies to bet ter manage t heir core opera tio ns, from bet ter weather :routing to increased voyage optimization and increased integration to other shipboard systems that affect operational efficiency.(1)Why are the shipping companies willing to introduce the ECDIS?A.The introduction of ECDIS will help administration monitor the safetyB.The use of ECDIS will help reduce the other equipment on boardC.The use of ECDIS will help improve efficiencyD.The instruction of ECDIS will help seafarers acquire new technology(2)What is the main reason of marine incidents claims by MAIB report?A.The seafarers on duty are of inadequacy to knowledgeB.The seafarers on duty are under fatigue conditionC.The seafarers on duty are doing something unrelated to safety navigationD.The seafarers on duty are of being willfully committed.(3)What roles do not ECDIS-enabled procedures play in shipping industry?A. The influence of flooding No. 1 hold on a bulk carrier carrying ore, from a naval architecture point of view, is of course to create a significant trim by the head. It is considered that on a well maintained ship this should be a survivable situation. In the event that flooding progress to the adjacent No. 2 hold then the consequent trim can immerse the deck forward and the survivability of the ship under storm condition becomes doubtful・ Another is also important and if this is a consequence of transverse watertight bulkhead failure then the shock loadings, both in terms of over and under pressures could create a chain reaction involving hatch covers being displaced, bulkheads collapsing, etc., within a few seconds resulting in an almost instantaneous loss of hull buoyancy and the ship sinking. Knowing when the holds are taking in water is, therefore, considered very important.(1)The following __________ is not the reason that flooding of a hold space may occur without the knowledge of the crew.A.that the visibility may be too poor at the momentB.that changes in the response of the ship may be masked by the stormC.that the conditions of the weather may prevent the crew members from detecting the response of the shipD.that the crew members are poorly educated and have not enough knowledge(2)The flooding of No. 1 hold __________ •A.will result in an almost instantaneous loss of hull buoyancy and the ship sinkingB.will create a chain reaction involving the hatch covers being displaced, bulkheads collapsingC- will progress to the adjacent No. 2 holdD.is normally a survivable situation(3)______ If , the consequent trim can immerse the deck forward and the survivability of the ship under storm condition becomes doubtful.A.No. 1 hold is floodedB.No. 2 hold is floodedC. both No. 1 and No. 2 hold are floodedD. either both No. 1 or No. 2 hold is flooded(4)The best titie of this paragraph shall be _____________ •A.The flooding and division arrangement of the shipB.Knowing when the holds are taking in water is very importantC.Crew members will never know when the holds are floodedD.Flooding is unavoidable13.Which one of the following should not be paid attention to as to accommodation forseafarer? _________municationB.Heating and ventilationC.The size of rooms and other accommodation spacesD.Noise and vibration and other ambient factorsAt sea, wet and dry bulb ambient temperatures should be taken and compared regularly with hold temperatures as a matter of routine to gauge whether ventilation is necessary. If a falling ambient temperature causes the t emperature of the ship s st rue ture to drop below the dew-point of the air in the hold, condensation will form on the hold frames and plating. These accumulations, known as ship s sweat , may subsequently drip or run on to the cargo. By monitoring both hold and ambient temperatures this situation can be predicted, and the development of ship s sweat may be prevented or minimized by timely ventilation.Should the steel be loaded in conditions where the ambient temperature is lower than that might be encountered later on in the voyage, the hold should not be ventilated. If the cargo is exposed to warmer air having a dew-point higher than the temperature of the steel, cargo sweat will form on the surface of the goods. Since much, if not all, of the steel in the hold will be affected in such circumstances, the consequences of cargo sweat are potentially more damaging than the effects of ship s sweat.(1)How to determine whether ventilation is necessary or not?A.By comparing the hold temperature with that of the cargoB.By comparing the hold temperature with wet and dry bulb temperatureC.According to the temperature of the cargo(2)According to wet and dry bulb temperatureA.Having formed and accumulated gradually, ship s sweat may drip on to the cargoB.Ship s sweat can be predictedC.The damage caused by ship s sweat may be greater than that by cargo sweatD.Ship s sweat can be prevented and minimized(3)Cargo sweat may form when ___________ •A.The dew-point of air at the loading port than that on the voyageB.The temperature of structure higher than that of the cargoC.The temperature encountered later on the voyage higher than the ambient temperature whenloadedD.The dew-point of air outside the hold higher than the temperature of the cargo(4)In what condition may ship s sweat form?A.When wet and dry bulb ambient temperatures are equalB.When the temperature of ship s structure is below the dew-point of the air in the holdC.When the temperatures of the out side and ship s struc ture are below the dew-poi nt ofair in the holdD.When ambient temperature is falling and below the dew-point of air in the hold14.Who can contact the Designated Person?A.all officers and crewB. the designated personC. the captainD. allsenior officers15.While operating your oceangoing vessel you must keep a record of any discharge or disposal of garbage.
