Transfiguration

Transfiguration

Transfiguration Text by Anita Yin China Pavilion at the 55th International Art ExhibitionV enice Biennale (la Biennale di Venezia), held every two years since 1895, has become a“weather vane” for global mod-ern art. Along with a theme exhibition orga-nized by specially-invited curators, this year’s event was highlighted by national pavilions presented by each participating country.Commissioned by China’s Ministryof Culture, China International Exhibi-tion Company chose Transfiguration byWang Chunchen from many submissions for China Pavilion, which features concept installations by seven Chinese artists. The word “transfiguration” first ap -peared in English in the Bible, describing Jesus’ transformation before ascension to heaven. Eventually, the word evolved into a more general definition referring to any transformation or metamorphosis. In the 1980s, American philosopher and art theorist Arthur Danto titled a book The Transfiguration of the Commonplace(1984). Thereafter, a word previously reserved for classical art history became a contemporary concept – a term embodying contrasting connotations of the traditional and contemporary. Its root includes “form,” “image,” perfectly complementary to the title of this biennale, “The Encyclopedic Palace,” which aims to promote the spirit of “the dream of the universal, all-embrac-ing image of the human being.”According to Curator Wang, “Transfig -uration” echoes certain distinct characteris-tics of contemporary international society. China is not alone in experiencing massive transformation; the whole world is under-going radical change due to globalization. One unique feature of art is its proclivity to reflect and react to changes of an era, to exhibit the manifestation of human beings’ dream through new images, to embody the change of presence, and to develop the con-structs of visual civilization and knowledge of the human being.Transfiguration in the China Pavilion represents a geographical journey of Chi-nese contemporary art and its expression of culture, moving from China to Europe and Italy, joining all countries to showcase the contemporary world of diversity. At an un-precedented speed, globalization has spread progress of human civilization throughout the entire world, including the arts. Chinese artists have been affected as much as any of their counterparts elsewhere. “Transfiguration in Chinese art derives from the artists’ diligent experimentation – striving to develop Chinese contempo-rary art and culture, to exhibit, to react, to carry, and to manifest Chinese cultural flavor and values,” asserts Curator Wang. “Transfiguration does not mean innovation, pioneering, and creation in its development of transformation. Today, in the reality of confronting global cultural dialogue, it is more important for us to learn from such world top-class exhibitions than showcas-ing our own creations.” Miao Xiaochun, Out of Nothing Oil on canvas, 2012Miao Xiaochun’s work is the fruit of observation and interpretation of history and culture from a contemporary Chinese perspective. In his projection installation Out of Nothing, he uses a virtual camera and 3-D imaging software to produce five connected scenes. He then uses the projections of these five images to form a cube of light composed of moving images.1. Wang Qingsong, Follow Him C-print, 2010Wang Qingsong’s large-scale photography series, Follow Him and Follow Me , depict specific real-life issues, illuminating scenes of education in China during the transitional period. Together, they create a concentrated visual expression of how society as a whole pursues modern education. His pho-tography inspires dialogue with other sectors and testifies to his on-site experience with such scenes within the mainframe of China.2. He Yunchang, The Sea Water of Venice Glass bottles, monitors, tables, seawater, et. al., 2013The artist filled 2013 bottles full of seawater and labeled them with his signatures and numbers. The audience can then exchange the seawater bottles with other bottles left by the artist and label them with their own signatures on stickers prepared by the artist. The next wave of visitors can also replace bottles left by previ-ous participants with their own, creating an endless cycle. Just as seawater is for all humans, the seawater bottles are also public and to be shared – representing equality and harmony in the modern world.3. Hu Yaolin, Thing-in-Itself Installation, 2013In the Virgin Garden, an installation space is arranged with major elements of Anhui-style architecture. Its shape and structure are all scientific and artistic in nature. However, Anhui-style architecture has been disappearing and is becoming increasingly scarce and precious. Some Chinese artists are endeavoring to protect the cultural heritage.4. Shu Yong, Guge Bricks Resin brick (10cm thick), rice paper, 80 x 230 x 1900cm., 2013Shu Yong’s installation Guge Bricks is composed of cast resin and transparent square tiles. The tiles are laid on a lawn. Each tile (37 x 15 x 9cm) contains a cultural term or phrase. Written in both Chinese and English, they indicate living con-cepts, pop culture, and social changes in modern society. The artist uses these socially-strong bilingual texts to convey concern about the social and cultural ecology. 1234。

Art——the city's survival strategy

In 2011, the 54th Biennale of Venice was held. Venice Biennale is a festival with a history of over a hundred years, and is Europe's one of the most important art events. Except for a few years' stop due to historical reasons, it has so far lasted for 117 years. Along with Kassel Biennale in Germany and Sao Paulo Biennale in Brazil, it enjoyed the name as one of the world's three major art exhibitions, and it is the oldest among the three, known as the Carnival in the Art Circle. Venice Biennale exhibition is divided into Theme Exhibition, Parallel Exhibition and the National Museum, and mainly exhibits contemporary art. In addition, the Venice Film Festival is part of the Venice Biennale.
On April 19, 1983, the City Council of Venice proposed to plan an Italian Art Biennale. The promoter was then the Mayor, Ricardo Saiwatike. In this way, on April 30, 1894, the first Venice Biennale was held and has attracted more than 200,000 visitors. Since then, the Venice Biennale has continued to the present, and has come to establish the complete mechanism including Venice Film Festival and the Venice Architecture Biennale. Both the Venice Biennale and the Architecture Biennale are held every other year, and they are held one after another on successive years, followed by Venice Film Festival in August, and the Open Exhibition in September.
There are about 60 sessions in the exhibition, which last for nearly 6 months. During this long period, there are numerous external exhibitions as well. In my opinion, the V enice Biennale has become the city's survival strategy. The use of art exhibition helps to keep this ancient and dynamic city operating. Several related events form a chain of art festivals, one by one and never stopped.。
