Unit 1As is known to us all, that with the development of economy and society, the problem of air pollution becomes more and more serious. Especially, harmful smog polluted the region seriously .This phenomenon caused people’s attention and they spent more energy on fighting against air pollution.Some effective actions had been taken, some factories were closed down while others were moved out of the region .In addition, a lot of trees had been planted on hills, fields and so on. The government was truly playing an important role in the fight against air pollution. If not, can it really be succeed only depends on several folk organizations or different sorts of environmental protection associations, even persons?Seeing the obviously changes on the surrounding, breathing more comfortable than ever, people feel pleasant after that, of course, the key thing is to thank for the governments’ measures which encouraged people to support the government so as to reduce the source of air pollution. In conclusion, both of the government, citizen and the factories moved out make a contribution to protect air environment from polluting serious again.The region has been seriously polluted by harmful smog, which proves to be the cause of many illnesses and for the climbing death rate. As a result, people have started to move out of the area.In response to the problem, the local government has decided to fight against air pollution. It has closed down several factories, which were considered to be the major cause of the pollution. Many power plants have been modernized to give off less pollution and also moved further away from people's homes so as to decrease the damage. At the same time, the local government has decided to plant trees in and around the region because trees can absorb some of the pollution.People welcome all the measures taken by the government. Consequently, more and more people have begun to move back to the region to take part in this battle for a clean environment.Unit 2Many of us are aware of the better performance of the Chinese students on their studies as compared with the American students. However, do you know the reasons behind this?Yes, to have performed well in the studies, the most important thing is to put in more effort. But still why will these Chinese students had the adamant to work so hard? It is the strong belief in hard work. This is a morality that had been passed down for many generations in the Chinese society. There is an ancient saying: "As you sow, so shall you reap." You will get the pay from your deeds no matter fast or slow. This belief had rooted in the mind of all the Chinese as if they are born to be hard-working although there are still some exceptions which the amount is negligible.There is also another cause that force the Chinese students to be more hardworking, that is the strong duty to their families. People in china unlike America, are only allowed to have one kid in every family. This leads to a heavier burden on the shoulders of the children. These responsibilities will cause them to work harder and harder and harder in order not to disappoint their parents and for a better life in future.It is reported that Chinese students are doing far better than American students in their studies. What are the reasons?That Chinese have strong belief in hard work is the first of the two main factors contributing to Chinese students' outstanding performance. Chinese students believe that through hard work and effort, people can perfect themselves and gain a better future for themselves. And they have also set higher standards for themselves. The second factor is that Chinese students have a strong duty to their families. They work hard not just for themselves but for the honor of their families. They have a high sense of responsibility. He was very successful in his acting and made about 80 films throughout his life.After World War II, Chaplin did not stop to rest on his earlier success. He gave up the Little Tramp character and tried to grow as an artist. Later Chaplin settled in Switzerland and stayed there for the rest of his life. He died in Switzerland on December 25, 1977 and the world lost one of the greatest creative artists of the 20th century.Unit 5To many people, a cowboy is a fantastic hero. A cowboy is a tall and strong man, wearing cowboy hat and boots, riding a horse and with guns around his waist. He remains alert to everything around him all the time. When danger is around, he never fails to sense or detect it, and he is always brave to face the danger. A cowboy is a skilled horseman and good gunman. He is a hero who helps the good people while punishing the bad. He seems like a superman who appears where he is needed. A cowboy does what's right and refuses money for his good actions, because he does not care about money. What he cares about is doing justice.Unit 6There are some key steps in career planning. The first one is to study yourself. Understanding what you are like, what you value, and what you become is the foundation for career planning. Talking with your friends helps you improve your career plans and make them work.The speed and efficiency of today's computers are working wonders for our age.Computer-controlled machinery is taking over many boring and dangerous jobs. Computers are working more reliably and efficiently and saving a lot of time for more creative work! By sharing information with people all over the world, people are tracking down criminals without losing a second. In addition, computers instantly send messages thousands of miles away so that we can hear or see what is happening at the other end of the world. Computers never get tired and they can work 24 hours a day. Computers are making our lives much easier than before. All we have to do is just to CLICK and the computers do everything for us.Unit 8What should we do in order to become successful learners? The following are some suggestions.Firstly, concentrating. Good learners allow no interruptions in their study time. Once they set to study, they don't answer phone calls, watch TV, or read newspapersSecondly, studying everywhere. Good learners are good at studying everywhere. For example, they practice speaking English to themselves when waiting for a meeting to start or for the bus to come. Some of them stick a vocabulary list on their bathroom wall and learn a new word every day while brushing their teeth.Thirdly, taking notes. Good learners divide a page into two parts: Write notes on the right and put down the main ideas on the left. At the end of each class, they write a few sentences about the lesson's main points.Unit 9Bad habit can ruin your health. For example, excessive coffee drinking can bring side effects. Excessive coffee drinking will stain teeth and cause stomach irritation. Another bad habit is to skip breakfast, which is very common among city dwellers. The stomach produces acids during the night; without food in the morning, these acids will irritate the stomach. Without breakfast, you are more likely to suffer from fatigue,an upset stomach, or a headache. Just the opposite of skipping breakfast is eating too much before sleep. This habit will contribute to the problem of being overweight.Of course, there are many other bad habits that can harm your health, such as smoking and drinking to excess. Doctors have been advising people to get rid of these annoying habits and lead healthier lives.Unit 10Shopping has changed in recent years. Going shopping took time and strength in the past. If you were to buy food, household items and clothing, you had to visit different shops. Sometimes they were not within walking distance. You had to take a bus to go from one place to another. It was not unusual that shopping would take you a whole day and at the time you returned home, you'd be completely exhausted.In contrast, shopping nowadays has become something enjoyable. A lot of supermarkets, in which prices are usually lower and a wider variety of items are offered—mainly food, household items, clothing, bedding and furniture or even anything that is out of your imagination. So you can buy everything you need in a single supermarket. Most of the supermarkets operate on the "serve yourself" method: You go in, pick up a basket, walk round it and choose what you want. At the exit there is a checkout lane where you pay for everything at one time.。
