Book 4-Unit 14
1. How did the family cope with “the razzias”?
They rearranged their kitchen to give the boys in the family an emergency hiding place as the razzias started. They enlarged the trapdoor which could allow them to get into a small potato cellar beneath the kitchen floor, put a large rug on top of it and moved the kitchen table to stand on this spot. Although it was not an ideal hiding place, it was sufficient for the boys to get out of sight for half an hour. In other words, it would not be safe under a thorough-going search by trained people but might escape the notice of soldiers doing a hurried search.
Book 4-Unit 14
The past has left many traces, including traditions, folk tales, works of art, archaeological objects, and books and other written records. Historians use all these sources, but they mainly study the past as it has been recorded in written documents. Thus, history is generally limited to human events that have taken place since the development of writing about 5,500 years ago.

Some study the past simply to understanSdcbriepttter how people of other times acted and thought. Other historians seek to draw lessons from those actions and thoughts as a guide for decisions and policies today. However, they disagree on history’s lessons, and so there are many different interpretations of the past.
Book 4-Unit 14
2. Why did Cocky tell the German soldiers that her brothers were under the table ? And didn’t the German soldiers believe her? There may be two interpretations. The first is that the children were trained by Mother not to tell lies, so that even in such a critical moment Cocky still held on to this principle. The second is that Cocky was such a clever girl that she knew if she told them her brothers were not in the house, the soldiers would certainly search the house more thoroughly. So the best strategy was to get them confused by giving a seemingly direct answer. German soldiers in such situations tended to think that people would not tell the truth. And they were skeptical of her words. After they had searched under the table without finding the boys, they came to the conclusion that the girl was playing a trick on them. So in the end Cocky had succeeded in shielding her brothers and in keeping up her mother’s principle of not telling lies.
