What is the status of NdFeB patent?

As performed strong magnetic characteristics with small size and light weight, NdFeB magnet has been widely used in Automotive, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and Permanent Magnet Motor areas such as Wind Turbine Generator, is by far the best price-performance magnets. Benefiting from abundant Rare Earth Resources, like PrNd metal, DY metal, which are mainly composed in Neodymium Magnet, China has been taken as a dominated position in NdFeB production.

In 1983 Magnetic Materials Conference held in the U.S., Sagawa from Japan published papers on NdFeB magnets and has applied for a patent. Before the invention of the NdFeB permanent magnets, all kinds of other magnetic material are never related with any patent, directly open to the public, researchers. However, since then, none of new studies or a disclosure can be published, unless of applying for a patent to the relevant organization.

1983 Sumitomo Corporation of Japan are ahead of applying to Japan, Europe , the United States drew on NdFeB composition patent applications, followed by the U.S. General Motors Corporation ( Magnequench ).Finally , Japan has made a patent in Europe and Japan , General Motors has made in the United States patents. It’s not only a major event in the industry for the two companies obtaining the patent on the composition of NdFeB, but also changed the pattern of NdFeB industry. After then, any other NdFeB enterprises can not access to the above neodymium magnet market without the two companies permission.

Currently only eight companies in China are authorized for the patent, consists of Zhong Ke San Huan , Yunsheng , Advanced Technology , Beijing magnetic , silver Na Jinke , Zhenhai Magnets , Anhui earth panda and Ningbo Jinji Strong Magnetic material Co., Ltd. The Zhenhai magnetics , Anhui Earth Panda New Material Co. and Ningbo Jinji Strong Magnetic Material Co., Ltd. achieved patents with Hitachi Metals reconciliation in May 2013.

It has been 30 years of development to form a complete industrial chain for China NdFeB industry. But for other hundreds of NdFeB enterprises, they are extremely hampered to export because of non-authority.

At present, more than a dozen medium-sized enterprises of China Rare Earth NdFeB are preparing jointly to the United States for suing Japan's Hitachi Metals NdFeB patent on "unreasonable dominate " in order to obtain the right to the market.
