Quotation Analysis
―I should not be in Heaven, nor should I be marrying Edgar Linton. And if my evil brother had not made Heathcliff into a servant, I would never marry Edgar, but now I could not marry Heathcliff, so he shall never know how I love him. I do not love him because he is handsome, Nelly, but because he is more myself than I am. Our souls are the same; and Linton’s is different.‖ (P.60) —Catherine
Quotation Analysis
Questions: What does the quotation imply? What is the function of the quotation?
Quotation Analysis
Answer: Catherine’s speech to Nelly about her acceptance of Edgar’s proposal forms the turning-point of the plot. It is at this point that Heathcliff leaves Wuthering Heights, after he has overheard Catherine say that it would “degrade” her to marry him. Catherine’s decision to marry Edgar Linton out of a desire to be “the greatest woman of the neighbourhood” exemplifies the effect of social considerations on the characters’ actions.

• After reading this story, I was touched by several parts. The first is about “LOVE”. There are two kinds of love in this story -- Pure and Selfish. Pure love can bring happiness to us, but selfish love can ruin a person. The second is about HATE. I deeply feel that hate is a horrible thing. Hate makes the world dark. Hate makes people forget the happy and beautiful things around them. If it can’t be dealt with well, it would influence the next generation. The last is the attitude towards things. Different attitudes produce different results. We can learn that from the different ending of Catherine and. We can see how important a positive attitude is. • Love is everlasting, but hatred is not. What we should do is insist onpure love and don’t let the hatred blind our eyes.

Although Wuthering Heights is now widely regarded as a classic of English literature, it received mixed reviews when first published, and was considered controversial because its depiction of mental and physical cruelty was so unusually stark. In the second half of the 19th century, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre was considered the best of the Brontë sisters' works, but later critics argued that Wuthering

Bronte sisters
They shone splendor in the literary world in the nineteenth century in England. Emily Bronte, just spent three decades in the world ,and left the earth in obscurity . However, her only novel "Wuthering Heights" has established her position in the history of English literature and world literature. In addition, she also wrote 193 poems. Therefore, she was considered to be a British genius authoress.
Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë’s only novel, first published in 1847 under the pseudonym(笔名) Ellis Bell.
"Wuthering Heights" showed a picture of life in an abnormal society through a love tragedy. It described a love and revenge story of a man, who suffered social prejudice and humiliation. Heathcliff, hero of the novel, was adopted by the old master of Villa. He suffered humiliation and failed in love. Therefore, he decided to take revenge on Catherine, the woman he loved very much, and her husband Linton and children. Eventually, he completed his revenge. However, he died in depression and disorder.

Heathcliff
“…. He's not a rough diamond - a pearl-containing oyster of a rustic: he's a fierce, pitiless, wolfish man…….. avarice is growing with him a besetting sin.
Complexity -- a man bears between love and hatred
As a child, he lives a miserable life. Catherine is the only person whom Heathcliff can turn to for his sorrow and complaint is the sole support of his life.
Three years later, Heathcliff returns with wealth and awful revenge.
But all his evil behaviors reflects other side of his personality: endless love of Catharine and fearless rebelling to the fate.
He falls in love with Catherine so crazily and unselfishly that she is his whole world, his hope and dream.
Heathcliff‘ s destructive force is unlashed and he sets on the rode of revenge. His vindictive hatred is another main moving force in his life.
