So how do I determine and understand the life style of my target market?Sociologist : The consumer's activities , interests ,and opinions or AIO can be used to analyze life styles and their impact on purchase behavior. Activities, interests, and opinions are especially useful when they can be related to demographic data. Grouping people accordingto these three criteria will reveal substantial differences in product usage ,time spent shopping, enjoyment of shopping experience, location and hours of the store, and so on. A typical consumer AIO survey would include questions on membership , hobbies, travel, shopping, work, and entertainment activities , involvement in the home , the family, and community interests and feelings about economics, politics, and advertising. The use of the AIO measurement has also been called psychographics ;it is in the early stages of development.Retailer :So the AIO survey of consumers is not enough. What else should I pay attention to?Sociologist: Culture, social class, reference groups and class consciousness are social dimensions of life style that have an impact on purchasing behavior. A person's culture affects the importance of family ,religion ,education and other concerts. North Americans act differently than South Americans or Europeans because of their cultural heritage. For example, in the United States, purchasing decisions are more decentralized; religion has a declining impact on behavior. From a retailing perspective, the norms or standards of behavior that are influenced by culture are most important. Culture has an impact on all aspects of the purchasing process.Retailer : How does social classes influence a person's purchasing behavior?Sociologist :Lower-class consumers have limited information sources and seek local ,friendly retailers. Middle class consumers utilize media information and extensive search. They are willing to shop out of their neighborhoods. Upper-class consumers use media information and shop at prestige stores. For products or services that are conspicuous ,reference groups have an important role in the purchasing process. Those reference groups that are face-to-face have the most impact on thepurchasing process. The different types and uses of reference groups need to be understood , As an example ,one's neighbours are a membership reference group. However ,a retailer must distinguish between the use of neighbours as a reference group by suburbanites and the use by city dwellers. The suburbanite will follow his or her neighbours and know them much better. City dwellers are more independent and know little about their neighbours.Retailer :Don't you think motives are very important in purchasing behavior?Sociologist : Yes. Personality , motives , and performance are individual dimensions of life style that have an impact on purchasing behavior. A consumer's personality traits affect the purchase process. For an impatient person, the process is short. For someone with little selfconfidence, the process is long. Post purchase satisfaction is very important to a statusseeker. Consumers have different motives (reasons) when they buy products. Motives are critical when the consumer ranks alternatives and makes a final decision. Motives dochange in different situations. A person's performance in various roles determines his or her social acceptance and influences the purchasing process.Retailer ,Thank you very much. I think I've learned about the importance of life style.。

Read this text about the problem of Barclays Bank. The New LookWhen Sir John Quinton, then chairman of Barclays Bank, was given his marching orders last April, Britain's biggest bank thought it had found the scapegoat for its sudden fall from grace and profits, Andrew Buxton, the bank's managing director and an offspring of its founding families, was a pointed chairman and chief executive, with effect from January 1st of next year. It seemed a glorious victory for good business management. Is the problem solve do certainly not.1. No sooner had Mr. Buxton been appointed chairman and chief executive than big shareholders and quite a few board members began quietly to question his ability to do both jobsat once. Now, weeks before he is due to move up, the questions are louder. Many wish the bank had seized the opportunity Lasy April to separate the two top posts. And privately. Some wonder whether Mr. Buxton is the right man for either one. What started as a thoroughly British Whispering Campaign has assumed much bigger dimensions..2. Mr. Buxton has suffered it all, but in truth he has no way out. After weeks of talking to shareholders and discussing with his non-executive directors, he has accepted that Barclays will separate the top jobs sometimes in the future. How7 He says that there has been no formal discussion of it in the boardroom.3. Formally or informally, it has been agreed that Mr. Buxton will not be moved from his chairmanship, and that Barclays must find a strong chief executive. Opinions differ as to whether this person should be chosen from inside or outside the bank. Several board members believe that there is no ideal candidate inside Barclays.4. Neither shareholders nor non-executive directors want to wait long. If the right candidate can be found, the bank could combine the announcement of a new appointment with its annual results at the end of March. Mr. Buxton stressed the importance of getting this next step right, particularly since any appointment will mean overturning a management reorganization that was announced only eight months ago.Questions 13-16. Part Three.Questions 23 to 30.Retailer: A person's life style has a significant effect on the purcharsing process. So how do I determine and understand the life style of my target market?Sociologist : The consumer's activities , interests ,and opinions or AIO can be used to analyze life styles and their impact on purchase behavior. Activities, interests, and opinions are especially useful when they can be related to demographic data. Grouping people according to these threecriteria will reveal substantial differences in product usage ,time spent shopping, enjoyment of shopping experience, location and hours of the store, and so on. What else should I pay attention to? Sociologist: Culture, social class, reference groups and class consciousness are social dimensions of life style that have an impact on purchasing behavior. A person's culture affects the importance of family ,religion ,education and other concerts. North Americans act differently than South Americans or Europeans because of their cultural heritage. From a retailing perspective, the norms or standards of behavior that are influenced by culture are most important. Culture has an impact on all aspects of the purchasing process.Retailer : How does social classes influence a person's purchasing behavior?Sociologist: Lower-class consumers have limited information sources and seek local, friendly retailers. Middle class consumers utilize media information and extensive search. They are willing to shop out of their neighborhoods. Upper-class consumers use media information and shop at prestige stores. For products or services that are conspicuous, reference groups have an important role in the purchasing process. Those reference groups that are face-to-face have the most impact on the purchasing process. The different types and uses of reference groups need to be understood, As an example, one’s neighbors are a membership reference group. However ,a retailer must distinguish between the use of neighbors as a reference group by suburbanites and the use by city dwellers. The suburbanite will follow his or her neighbors and know them much better. City dwellers are more independent and know little about their neighbors.Retailer: Don’t you think motives are very important in purchasing behavior?Sociologist : Yes. Personality , motives , and performance are individual dimensions of life style that have an impact on purchasing behavior. A consumer's personality traits affect the。

Questions 23 30.By Paul Abrahams in TokyoResults from Japan's largest petrochemicals companies for the year to March 3lst reflect the crisis facing a sector plagued by sluggish domestic demand ,over capacity ,plunging prices and the appreciation of the yen.News of the sector's cire trading position follow this week's decision by Showa Denko to sell its polystyrene business. The company, a marginal manufacturer, sold its 30, 000 tonnes a year Kawasaki plant to Asahi Chemical, Japan's largest polystyrene manufacturer with capacity of about 333, 000 tonnes a year, equivalent to about 25 per cent of the market. The move was the latest in a series ofalliances and mergers as the troubled industry restructures.Mitsubishi Petrochemical , the country's biggest plastics group , reported a loss of Y8,39bn ( $ 80m) compared with pre-tax profits last year of Y8.25bn. The group made an operating loss of Y13.8bn,the first since 1982. The poor result came despits cost-cutting measures, lower raw material prices ,and Y4bn worth of profits from equity sales.Turnover fell 12.2 per cent from Y372bn to Y326bn, as prices and volumes declined. Earnings per share, which reached Y52. 5 in 1991 , fell to a loss per share of Y9.44. The group, which is scheduled to merge with Mitsubishi Kasei on October 1st ,cut its dividend from Y8 per share to Y4.Mitsubishi Kasei's pre-tax profits fell 76. 8 per cent from Y9.3bn last year to Y2.2bn. The group reported its first operating loss in 40 years at Y467m, and only managed to post positive pre-tax results by selling Y15. 7bn worth of equities. Turnover fell 1.8 per cent ,the fourth yearly decline ,to Y696bn. The dividend was halved to Y3 per share.Mr. Morihisa Takano ,managing director, said the newly merged group would generate pre-tax profits of Y10bn on sales of Y855 bn during the year to March 1995.He predicted petrochemicals prices would bottom out during the summer. No decision had been made about the dividend ,but the new company could pass it during the current year, he Pre-tax profits at Mitsui Petrochemical industries, Japan's biggest polyethylene maker, plunged 75 per cent from Y9bn to Y2. 26bn on sales down 9. 3 per cent at Y272bn. The company blamed poor demand for the slump which offset the benefits of cost-cutting measures. The dividend is unchanged at Y6 per share. The group forecast pre-tax profits for the current year marginally up at Y3bn on turnover of Y276bn.Shin-Etsu, one of Japan's biggest makers of polyvinyl chloride , reported profits down 26.1 per cent from Y17. 6bn to Y13bn. Sales increased 0. 2 per cent from Y275bn to Y276bn. Net profits fell 26. 6 per cent to Y7.08bn, or Y21.85 per share. The group maintained the final dividend at Y3.75, making the full-year pay out Y7.5 per share. Shin-Etsu forecast pre-tax profits for the current year of Y15.5bn on sales of Y277bn. The outlook for the petrochemicals industry remains blsak. The imbalance between supply and demand for ethylene, the basic building block of petrochemicals ,is about 2.8m tonnes of ethylene and is set to deteriorate further this year.A massive 700,000-tonne-a-year ethylene complex owned by Maruzen ,Mitsui Petrochemical and Sumitomo Chemical comes on stream later this year and Mitsubishi Petrochemical is also commissioning a new 300,000-tonne-a -year plant this year.一.READINGPART ONEQuestions 1-7. Comprehension(10%)Read the following review of a book called the Bosses Speak. For each question1-5,choose the correct answer.Mark one letter(A,B or C)on your Answer Sheet. The bosses speakJohn Stuart is an executive recruitment specialist who has turned towriting. The result is this book, based on interview with twenty Chief executives. Each top manager–none of them famous names, surprisingly–is given ashort chapter, and there is some introductory material and a conclusion. This means you can jump from one person to another,in any order, whichis good for people who are too busy to read a book from cover to cover. For a management book it isn’t expensive, although whether it’s good value for money is doubtful. Some of the twenty interviewees started their own businesses, while others joined a company and worked their way up.Some are fairly new in their position, and have had years of experience, though, strangely,Stuart doesn’t seem interested in these differences. The interviewees work in everything, from retailing to airlines to software, and it is this variety that forms the main theme of Stuart’s book.I have to say that Stuart’s approach annoys me.He rarely stays at a distance from his interviewees, who are mostly presented in their own, positive words. If this were always the case,as a result,I don’t know whether to accept any of his opinions. It also means that the book gives no clear lessons. At the very least,I expected to learn what makes a successful Chief Executive. But these people seem to share two types of qualities. Some of them are very common, suggesting that anyone can be equally successful, which is definitely not the case. And the other qualities are ones which most successful bosses I’ve seen definitely do not have.So in the end I’m no wiser about what really goes on.Perhaps I’m unfair. As long as you don’t think about whether you’d like them as friends, and pay no attention to most of the advice they give, the most readable parts are where the bosses describe their route to their present position.Stuart seems to think that his book would be useful for people aiming for the top, and that it might even make a few want to start their own company;but,in fact, what they could learn here is very limited.Seen as light business reading for a doctor or teacher, though, this book would provide some good entertainment.1.The reviewer suggests that one advantage of the book is thatA.it is better value than other management books.B.it does not need to be read right through.C.it is about well-known people.2.The reviewer cannot accept Stuart’s opinions because StuartA.makes unreasonable complaints about the interviewees.B.writes too positively about the interviewees.C.has different attitudes toward different interviews.3.Reading the book make the reviewer think thatA.there are certain qualities which all Chief Executives need.B.it is different to discover how people really run a company.C.running a company is earlier than many people think.4.Which parts of the book did the reviewer most enjoy reading?A.How the interviewees became Chief Executives.B.What sort of people the interviewees are.C.The advice given by the interviewees.5.The reviewer recommends the book for people whoA.intend to set up in business.B.want to become senior managers.C.are outside the field of business.VI Writing(25%)1.A new designer,Mary
