Isambard Kingdom Brunel

1My Life as a Foreign Student in ChinaHi! My name is Emma and I am a 10-year-old girl from the United States. Last year, my parents got amazing jobs teaching English at a university in Beijing, China! That meant our whole family had to move halfway across the world. At first I was really sad to leave my friends, my school, and everything familiar behind. But living in China has turned out to be the greatest adventure!Every morning, I wake up at 6:30am to get ready for school. My mom makes me a yummy breakfast of congee (rice porridge) with pickled vegetables and an egg. It's different than the cereal I used to eat back home, but I've grown to love it. Then I put on my uniform - a white shirt with red strips and a red skirt or pants. All students in China have to wear uniforms. At 7:30am, my dad and I leave our apartment on the university campus. We take the subway to my elementary school. The subway gets really crowded with people rushing to work and school! I've learned to hold on tight so I don't get squished. My school day starts at 8:30am sharp. First up is Chinese language class. Learning Chinese is super hard with all the tones and characters, but I'm trying my best. My Chinese teacher is very nice and patient with me. Next is math class. Math seems to be the same in every country - lots of numbers and formulas to memorize! At 11:30am, it's time for lunch in the school cafeteria. There's always lots of dishes to choose from like stir-fried vegetables, braised meat, soups, rice, and dumplings. My favorite is the jiaozi (dumplings) because they remind me of pot stickers back home. Just be careful - some of the dishes can be very spicy! After lunch, we have more classes like science, English, art, and PE. Chinese schools have a longer day than American schools. We aren't dismissed until 5pm! I'm usually pretty tired by then.Once home, I work on my heaping piles of homework. Chinese students have a lot more homework and studying than American kids. Around 7pm, we'll have a delicious homemade dinner that my mom preps like mapo tofu, kungpao chicken, or neat sliced Beijing duck.On weekends, my favorite thing is exploring around Beijing with my parents. We've visited incredible places like the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and the Summer Palace. Beijing is such an amazing mix of modern skyscrapers and really old historic sites. We also love tasting all the different regional Chinese cuisines like Sichuan, Hunan, and Xinjiang food.Of course, living in China isn't all fun and games. The air pollution can be really bad some days and make it hard to breathe. The traffic is crazy with zillions of cars, bikes, and motorbikes zooming everywhere. And I really miss my friends and family back in the States. But overall, I feel so lucky to experience life in such an incredible country and culture. My Chinese is slowly improving, and I've made some nice friends at school. I'm becoming an expert with chopsticks, and I don't even mind slurping noodles loudly anymore. Who knows - maybe I'll be a diplomat or China expert when I grow up! ???? ??? (Thank you China!) for this wonderful adventure so far.篇2My Life Studying in ChinaHi! My name is Emily and I'm a 10-year-old girl from America. Last year, my parents decided it would be a great opportunity for me to go to school in China for a while. At first, I was really nervous because everything would be so different. But now I absolutely love living here! Let me tell you all about my daily life.Every morning, I wake up at 6:30am to get ready for school. My mom makes me a yummy Chinese breakfast like congee (rice porridge) with pickles and peanuts or some fresh hot soybean milk with cruller donuts. The food here is so delicious but very different from pancakes and eggs back home. After breakfast, I put on my uniform which is a white shirt with red stripes and a red skirt or pants. All the students have to wear uniforms to school in China. I grab my backpack and my mom walks me to the school gates at 7:30am. She's not allowed inside, so I give her a hug and wish h er a "Zài jiàn!" which means goodbye in Chinese. The first class starts at 8am sharp. We have to line up perfectly straight in the courtyard and sing the national anthem while raising the Chinese flag. It's really important to be on time and well-behaved at my school. The teachers here are very strict! My favorite class is Chinese language in the mornings. I'm trying really hard to learn Mandarin Chinese since it's one of themost difficult languages for English speakers. The writing system with all the intricate characters is like cracking a secret code! Fortunately, my Chinese teacher is really nice and helpful.Other classes I have are math, science, English, PE, art, and music. Just like at home, we have to work really hard and always pay attention. Unlike American schools though, we never change classrooms. The teachers are the ones who rotate between rooms while we stay put. During class, we always have to stand up when the teacher enters as a sign of respect. At 11:30am, we get a break for lunch. All the students eat the same meal served cafeteria-style in our classroom. There are always lots of dishes like veggie stir-fries, eggs, rice, soup, and sometimes meat like chicken or pork. I've even tried more adventurous foods here like century eggs, stinky tofu, and chicken feet! I actually like a lot of the new foods, although some do take some getting used to.After lunch, we have a break to play outside or just rest for 30 minutes. Many kids take short naps while laying their heads on their desks. Having a nap time in the middle of the day seems strange to me, but it helps re-energize everyone for the afternoon classes. In the evenings, I attend even more extra classes like Chinese calligraphy, painting, martial arts, or piano lessons. China has a saying "Eating bitterness is good for you when young" which means you need to work really hard when you're a kid. My parents have very high expectations that I'll become a master in these skills. Finally, classes end around 6 or 7pm. I'm always exhausted by then! I head home on the school bus or my dad picks me up if he's not working late. For dinner, my parents cook simple meals like tomato and egg stir-fry, vegetable dumplings, or ma po tofu (a spicy dish). We don't go out to restaurants too often since home-cooked meals are healthier and cheaper. After dinner, I have to finish any homework assignments from my 8-10 hours of school that day. Sometimes I have essay writing, worksheets, or need to practice difficult vocabulary or math concepts. I wish I had more free time like kids in America! Usually I can squeeze in 30 minutes to an hour of downtime to play mobile games or watch a Chinese cartoon.Once my homework is all done, I take a shower and get ready for bed around 9pm. Even though the day is long and tiring, I feel like I've learned so much. Living in China has been an amazing experience! I'm becoming fluent in one of the world'shardest languages and learning all about the rich Chinese culture and history. I'll definitely be way ahead of my American friends when I eventually move back home! That's a typical day in my life here. Being an international student in China is challenging with all the studying and strict schools. But it's opened my eyes to a fascinating new world. I'm so grateful my parents gave me this incredible opportunity to live abroad. Studying in China is definitely an adventure I'll never forget!篇3My Life as a Foreign Student in ChinaHi! My name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. I moved to China from the United States last year when my mom got a job in Beijing. At first, I was really nervous to go to school in a new country where I didn't know the language or culture. But I've learned so much this past year and made lots of great friends. Let me tell you about my typical day as a foreign student in China!I wake up around 7am to get ready for school. My mom packs me a lunch box with rice, veggies, and sometimes dumplings or noodles. Yum! Chinese food is so tasty. Afterbreakfast, I take the school bus to the international elementary school in our neighborhood. When I first started, I felt really shy because I couldn't speak or understand any Chinese. But the teachers are really nice and helped me learn quickly. Now I can have simple conversations and read some characters. I'm still learning though. In my class, there are students from all over the world - America, England, France, Korea, Japan, and more. The teachers speak English during lessons, but we also have daily Chinese language classes. My favorite subjects are art and P.E. because I don't need to know as much language for those. At lunch time, we can pick what we want from the cafeteria. I love getting jiaozi (dumplings) or garlicshootsnoodlesoup. The Chinese snacks are delicious too, like eggs tarts, soyamilkdrinks, andfriedbreadsticks. Sometimes my friends and I have trouble with the chopsticks though and make a mess! After lunch, we have more classes like math, science, and social studies. Then we have activities like orchestra, robotics club, or art. I'm in the Chinese yo-yo club which is really fun. The coach teaches us cool tricks.Once school ends at 3pm, my mom picks me up or I take a shuttle bus back home. I live in an apartment in the city close to my mom's office. Our building has a playground and there are parks nearby. On weekdays after school, I have to do my homework first. That's no fun! But then I get to play with my neighbor friend Cindy. She's from Taiwan and is helping me practice Chinese. We make bracelets, play video games, or explore the neighborhood. If the weather is nice, we walk to the local market and I get a fresh fruit shake or coconut. The market has so many interesting things - dried fish, live frogs, bargaining shoppers! It's much crazier than grocery stores back home. After dinner, I video chat with my grandparents in America and tell them about my day. They think it's so cool that I go to school in China and are proud of me for learning the language. On weekends, we try to go on trips around Beijing. We've seen the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and Tiananmen Square already. Ilike watching the flagraisers and formationperformances. My favorite weekend activity is going to the park and flying a Chinese kite! The kites have such pretty designs of animals, warriors, or symbols. Local families are always willing to show me how to run with the kite strings and get it soaring up high.Of course, there are hard parts about being a foreign kid in China too. I miss my friends and family back in America. And my Chinese still needs a lot of work - buying things in stores or understanding teachers can be frustrating sometimes. But overall, I'm having an amazing experience learning about this fascinating culture.Studying abroad is a great opportunity for kids to step out of their comfort zone and become more confident, independent world citizens. I'm so lucky my parents encouraged me to have this adventure in China. It's definitely challenging at times, but also the most rewarding experience of my life so far. Studying abroad has made me braver, more outgoing, and excited to continue learning in the future. 4My Life Studying in ChinaHi! My name is Emma and I'm a 10-year-old student from the United States. Last year, my parents got really exciting jobs teaching English at a university in Beijing, China. That meant ourwhole family was moving across the world to live in a totally new country! I was really nervous but also really excited. After a long plane ride, we finally arrived in Beijing. Wow, what a crazy big city! There were so many people, tall buildings, and cars everywhere. The airport was gigantic. Outside, everything looked so different from back home. The buildings had amazing colors and decorations I had never seen before. We took a taxi to the apartment where we would be living on the university campus. Our neighbors were all Chinese families. Some spoke a little English but most didn't know any. I only knew how to say "hello" and "thank you" in Chinese! I was really worried about how I would make friends and understand anything.Luckily, the university had a special program for kids like me - foreigners living in China whose parents worked there. They had a international elementary school just for us! On the first day, I was so nervous. But the teachers were really nice and spoke perfect English. And there were kids from all over the world in my class - France, Germany, Nigeria, Japan, and more!I started learning Mandarin Chinese right away too. It was hard at first because the writing system uses different characters instead of letters. But my teacher was really patient and made itfun with songs, games, and activities. By the end of the first year, I could have basic conversations and read simple books and menus!School life was really different than back in America. We had longer school days, with more classes and less recess time. But we also had cool classes like martial arts, Chinese painting, and calligraphy. Instead of raising our hands to speak, we had to stand up at our desks. The cafeteria food was also really unique - there were dishes with weird vegetables and sauces I had never tried before. Some I loved and some I didn't like at all! After school, my friends and I loved exploring around the campus and Beijing. We'd visit parks, museums, temples, and different food streets. Everything was so colorful and exciting compared to my little hometown. I'll never forget things like seeing the giant pandas at the zoo, trying stinky tofu (sooo gross!), visiting the Forbidden City palace, and celebrating Chinese New Year with firecrackers and lion dances!Living in China was hard sometimes because I missed my cousins, grandparents, and favorite foods back home. And when I first arrived, I felt really out of place not understanding the language or culture. But over time, it became an incredible adventure. I learned so many new things, made friends fromaround the globe, and got to experience the amazing Chinese culture in a way I never could have back home. I'm so grateful my family took this opportunity to come here! Now that I'm about to graduate elementary school, we'll be moving back to the States soon. I'm excited to see my old friends and family again. But I know I'll really miss Beijing and visiting all my favorite places here. Part of my heart will always be in China. I improved my Chinese so much that I'll be able to keep using it back home. And I made so many wonderful memories that I'll never forget this life-changing experience of being an international student in China!篇5My Super Cool Life Studying in ChinaHi everyone! My name is Tommy and I'm a 10-year-old American kid studying in Beijing, China for a year. Are you curious what my days are like? Well, get ready for an exciting journey!Every morning, I wake up to the delicious smell of jianbing, which is kind of like a crispy crepe with an egg cooked right into it. My Chinese mommy (that's what I call my host mom) makes the best jianbing! After eating, I put on my uniform - we have towear uniforms at my Chinese school which is kind of different than back home. Then the real fun begins - I take the subway to school! The Beijing subway is awesome. It's like an underground rocket ship zooming all around the city. At my stop, I walk a few blocks to my school along with hundreds of other students. We have to line up by class when we arrive. All the students chant in unison to start the day with energy! My favorite class is Chinese language class. I'm learning to read and write Chinese characters which is really hard at first, but also really cool once you get the hang of it. We practice calligraphy with ink brushes and learn about Chinese culture and history. I'm horrible at using chopsticks though! For lunch, we eat in the cafeteria. There's always lots of rice, vegetables, and different meat or tofu dishes. Some of the foods seem really weird at first like century eggs or stinky tofu, but you get used to it. We have to be super fast eaters because lunch period is only 30 minutes! After lunch, we have more classes like math, science, and PE. PE in China is very intense - we run laps, do calisthenics, and play games like Chinese jump rope. At 4pm, regular classes end andwe go to extracurricular clubs. I take Chinese yo-yo, kung fu, and calligraphy. I've gotten pretty good at diaboloing!Once clubs end around 6pm, I head home on the subway. I have to be very careful and hold tight to the railing because it gets super jam-packed during rush hour! When I get back to my host family's apartment, we have dinner together. It's usually a few different dishes shared among everyone. Using chopsticks is still hard but I'm slowly improving. After dinner, I work on my homework for a few hours. We get a ton of homework in China! Then I have some free time to relax, practice my hobbies, or hanging out with my host siblings. We love playing video games, sports in the park nearby, or just goofing around. On weekends, we go on lots of fun trips around Beijing. We've visited the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, parks, museums, theaters, and more. Beijing is such an amazing mix of old and new. I feel like I've traveled back in time then fast-forwarded to the future all in one city! There are just too many incredible experiences to fit into one essay. Getting used to the language, food, customs, and everything was pretty tough at first. But now I've adjusted and I love my life in China! I've made so many new friends from allaround the world. I'm improving my Mandarin every day. And I've learned so much about this fascinating country and its 5,000 years of rich history and culture.Well, that's a glimpse into my super cool daily life as an American student in Beijing. Study abroad is an unbelievable opportunity to expand your horizons. If you ever get a chance to live in another country, I absolutely recommend going for it! You'll make unforgettable memories and have a fun adventure. Zai jian!篇6My Life Studying in ChinaHi everyone! My name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. I moved to China from the United States last year because my mom got a job in Beijing. At first, I was really sad to leave my friends and life behind. But studying in China has been the coolest adventure ever! The biggest change is definitely the language. In America, we just spoke English everywhere. But in China, everyone speaks Chinese! The language sounds so different with its tones and characters. At my international school, we have Chineselanguage classes every day to learn reading, writing, and speaking. It's really hard but I'm getting the hang of it!On my first day of school, I didn't know anybody and couldn't understand what anyone was saying. I felt so alone and scared. But the teachers were really nice and helped me. They used pictures and motions to explain things at first. And the other students were super friendly and helped me out. Now I have lots of new friends from all over the world! My best friends are Mei from China, Raj from India, and Paulo from Brazil. We all live in the same apartment building near the school. Our parents take turns driving us to school each day. I love listening to their different languages in the car. It sounds like a secret code!School life in China is pretty different than in America. We have to wear uniforms every day which I didn't like at first. But it makes getting ready so easy in the morning. We also have much longer school days, from 8am to 4pm. But we get two hour-long breaks, one for lunch and one for nap time! The lunch break is my favorite because we can explore all the different restaurants near campus. My favorite foods in China are dumplings, noodles, and milk tea. Raj loves the spicy Sichuan dishes. Mei is obsessed with hotpot where you cook meats and veggies yourself. And Paulo goes crazy for the Chinese breads and pastries. We're always trading food at lunch!During nap time, we lay our heads on our desks and take a rest. I think it's a bit babyish but it's actually nice to recharge. Sometimes I have trouble sleeping though because my classmates snore so loudly! We spend the rest of the afternoon in more classes like art, music, and PE.After school, there's still so much to do! Mei, Raj, Paulo and I have different activities every weekday. On Mondays, we take a Chinese yo-yo class. It's like a bouncy ball attached to a circular string contraption. You swing it around and do tricks - it's awesome! Tuesdays we have kung fu lessons to learn martial arts moves. That one is my favorite because we get to spar at the end.Wednesdays are Chinese calligraphy and painting. We use special brushed and inks to make beautiful art. It's so peaceful and quiet during those classes. Thursdays are Chinese chess, which is like regular chess but loads harder with all the pieces. And Fridays we take a cooking class to learn classic Chinese dishes. I'm getting pretty good with chopsticks! On weekends, we love to explore Beijing. It's such an amazing mix of modern skyscrapers and ancient sites. Oneweekend we toured the massive Forbidden City palace. Another time we walked along the Great Wall of China - it was endless! We've also visited beautiful parks, temples, museums, and markets. I love browsing the stalls and trying to bargain in my beginner Chinese.Living in China has been a crazy adventure full of new experiences, flavors, and cultures. My favorite part is learning alongside friends from all over the globe. Between classes, activities, and exploring Beijing, every day is jam-packed. While I do miss home sometimes, I'm so grateful for this opportunity. I'm becoming a true world citizen!。

Unit 3 Leisure ActivitiesPassage A Clubs and SocietiesParties, drinking, eating - oh, and working - all help pass the time, but deep down there's something you're really eager to find, but you can't quite put your finger on. What you have been looking for, my friend, is the chance to throw yourself into the world of University Societies, and discover the huge range of activities which thrive in a city like Oxford.Whether you want to pursue an existing interest or develop new ones, your first move should be to check out the bewilderingly large array of clubs at the OUSU Freshers' Fair. With your Freshers' Fair ticket, you can get your hands on a brand-new edition of the comprehensive guide to all things at Oxford. If you miss the Fair, don't despair: you can see what societies are offered in the Oxford Directory, a handbook issued to you in Freshers' Week. Take a while to browse through --- it's your one major chance to find out about what goes on in the University. The degree to which people get involved in societies varies a great deal. Some totally immerse themselves in a club, hardly speaking to anyone who isn't a member of that group for the next three years and rising to become a leader of the organization. Others prefer to take a more eclectic approach, being members of several societies and taking part in whichever of their events seem interesting. Many people, perhaps foolishly, completely ignore University societies and just hang out with mates in college.Societies offer a great chance to meet people from outside college, which, especially for arts students, is something it is sometimes difficult to do. But don't forget that most colleges2 have their own flourishing societies, which you may be able to join in your college during Freshers' Week. Music and drama are often popular and it is very easy to get some mates together and start something up. If you have ambitions to open up your new Shakespearian Rap Society3 to the whole University, you can register it with the University Proctors, who give out start-up grants and loans, among other benefits. One of the downsides, especially with larger societies, is the hacking which takes place. 'Hack' is the negative term applied to those seeking advancement (usually to President) in whatever Club or Society, and some clubs such as the Oxford Union or the Guild Society tend to attract those with the spark of ambition more than others. When students suddenly remember their blank CVs5 which are supposed to secure them a highly paid job once they graduate, hackery is almost inevitable. Do not be afraid, though:the vast majority of students tend to avoid such self-seeking behaviour and get on with life. With over 300 registered societies there really is something for everyone. Apart from the obvious political parties and sports clubs there are groups for all the main religions; societies interested in the society and culture of countries from China to Bulgaria, and UK regions from Scotland to Essex; charities for those interested in voluntary work, literature, music, drama and sci-fi; and a fair number of strange groups such as the LMH Pudding Society, the Oxford Stunt Factory and the Pooh Sticks Society. You won't get bored.A篇俱乐部和社团聚会、喝酒、吃饭--哦,还有工作--都让时光流逝,但你内心深处确有一些很想追寻的东西,却无法实现。

Receiving the university admission notice is a momentous occasion in every student's life. It marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. As I held the precious piece of paper in my hand, my heart was filled with a sense of accomplishment and anticipation. The envelope, with the familiar logo of my dream university printed on it, had arrived in the mail earlier that day. As I tore it open, my eyes scanned the contents eagerly. It was not just a piece of paper; it was a testament to my efforts, a gateway to new opportunities, and a promise of a brighter future.Looking back, I recalled the long journey that led me to this moment. The sacrifice and struggle had paid off, and I was finally on my way to fulfilling my dream of becoming an English major. The admission notice wasn't just about my academic achievements; it was also a recognition of my personal growth. During my high school years, I had learned to persevere in the face of challenges, to stay focused in pursuit of my goals, and to embrace every opportunity to improve myself. These lessons, I knew, would serve me well in my university life.As I looked ahead, I was filled with excitement and anticipation.
