采用此装置，将可避免机车空气制动系统中的风缸、管道及各阀类出现凝结水、冰、锈蚀、杂物，以防止由此而发生的制动失灵故障。

JKG系列空气干燥装置工作原理JKG系列空气干燥装置是DF型内燃机车空气制动系统必备的重要装置之4C一，它能够有效地消除压缩空气中的尘埃、水蒸汽和油污，提高压缩空气的质量，减少对制动管路及各阀件的锈蚀，确保制动系统各阀件的作用安全、可靠，延长制动系统各阀件的使用寿命，从而确保机车车辆的运行安全。
但在机车运用过程中，空气干燥装置中的排气阀、排污阀、电磁阀等发生故障均会造成空气干燥装置排风不止。
此时，若乘务员不能正确处理故障，机车总风缸就充不到规定风压，致使空气压缩机连续运转打风，直至打坏气阀，最终导致机车因无制动风源而无法施行制动，严重影响着列车运行安全。
如2002年7月DF4266机车在济西-水屯间因空气干燥装置油水分离器电磁排污阀排风不止，4C4151机车也因干燥器排气阀排风不止乘务员切除不当造成机破；同年10月DF4C造成临修(机破因素)。
型内燃机车 2002年10月1日至2003年5月1日，淄博机务段39台DF4C空气干燥装置发生的排风不止故障共53件，其中干燥器排气阀排风不止故障32件，油水分离器排污阀排风不止故障19件，其他原因引起的2件。
JKG系列空气干燥装置由空气干燥器(含电空阀及电气控制器)、油水分离器、电磁排污阀等组成。
空气干燥器是由风泵调压器来控制的。
风泵调压器将机车上总风缸压力转变为电控信号，当总风压力低于750kPa时，调压器发出“通电”信号；当总风压力达到900kPa时，调压器发出“断电”信号。
这2个信号一方面通过机车上的电控系统来控制空气压缩机电机的起动与停止，另一方面通过干燥器的“电气-机械”控制系统输出电空阀控制信号，通过电空阀来操纵各机械阀(进气阀、排气阀)的动作从而操纵干燥器的工作。
即：风泵调压器接通风泵电机电源起动时，电控器同时得到“通电”信号后，使一个电空阀处于“得电供气”状态，另一个电空阀处于“失电排气”状态，并以此操纵各自的进、排气阀动作。
设此时控制A塔的电空阀Ad处于“得电供气”状态，控制B塔的电空阀Bd处于“失电排气”状态，在电空阀Ad的作用下，A塔进气阀阀口AJ被关闭、排气阀Ap被开启，B塔进气阀阀口BJ被开启、排气阀Bp被关闭。
