A“Meet the ancestors” is a truly fascinating book about what scientists have learned from several archaeological digs in the British Isles. The book focuses on nine sites, which range from the late Neolithic through the Middle Ages. Each of the states contains human remains, and the book explains what those remains can tell us about how our ancestors lived in ancient times. What makes the book especially engaging is that it tries to show how these people would have looked when they were alive. Each chapter features either a portrait (often generated with the aid of computers) or a sculpture that puts flesh on dry bones. In one particularly striking case, the author tells the story of Bleadon Man, an Iron Age farmer who died nearly 2000 years ago. Using DNA from his bones, scientists were able to identify five people who were living in the same English farming village 2000 years later and who had DNA that was very similar to the ancient farmer—probably, but not certainly, these five are the farmer’s dista nt relatives. Then the scientists prepared a sculpture showing how the ancient farmer probably looked when he was alive. The sculpture was compared to one of the modern villagers with similar DNA—and, as Richards puts it, “from their faces they could have been brothers.” The picture that shows the descendant holding up the sculpture of his ancient forebear is worth the price of admission. If you enjoy this book, you should also try Ian Wilson’s “Past Lives: Unlocking the Secrets of Our Ancestors,” which explores several of the same cases and a few besides.1. Who is the author of the book “Meet the ancestors”?A. Ian WilsonB. BleadonC. RichardsD. it’s not mentioned2. The underlined word “engaging” probably means ________.A. popularB. attractiveC. detailedD. beautiful3. Which is true according to the passage?A. It is confirmed that Bleadon Man and the five living farmers are relatives.D. You can find some new cases about our ancestors in “Past Lives”.BFor poets, bird song is a beautiful expression of nature in full bloom. But for scientists, the chirps of birds are far more meaningful than just pretty sounds. Latest studies show the way that young birds learn to sing is similar to that of a human baby learning to speak."The question we're trying to answer is how a young bird learns its song," says Professor Michale Fee of MIT. Bird's creative, trial-and-error type of learning provides an ideal model for studying similar processes in humans. An example is how a baby's babble turns into the recognizable syllables of mama and papa. Also the part of the brain that is involved in bird song is very similar to that of a human. So birds may have something to teach us about our own brains, Fee said. The study shows that young birds like to create new and imperfect songs. Gradually, the youngsters' songs become less different and more similar to the sound of their parents. Scientists disabled part of a young finch's brain and stopped the learning in midstream. The bird still sings. But never learns the right songs.Fee's team found that the part of the brain involved is called the anterior forebrain pathway. Its neurons produce random bursts that make the young bird make new sounds and compared it with that of their parents. They also find out that once a bird is old enough that part of the brain will be less active. The study does not enable us to really understand the meaning of bird language. But Fee believes it will eventually be applied to human brain diseases, such as Parkinson's disease.4. The subject discussed in the passage is _____.A. bird languageB. how birds learn songsC. human brain diseasesD. how birds create new songs5. According to the scientists, plays the most significant role in the learning processof young birds.A. the part of brain called anterior forebrain pathwayB. the trial-and-error type of learningC. the example of their parentsD. the creation of new and imperfect songs6. It can be inferred from the story that _____.A. young birds are always making meaningless soundsB. if a bird had its anterior forebrain pathway damaged, it can never singC. a bird can't live happily without its anterior forebrain pathwayD. as a bird grows older, it may not learn new songs quickly7. Parkinson's disease is mentioned here to _____.A. show how our brain worksB. exemplify human brain diseaseC. explain how serious brain disease can beD. prove that human brain diseases are curableCIn 1996 I wanted to buy a Honda Civic. I went to the local dealer. "Oh, you want a Civic, do you?" said the fellow. "And I suppose you'd also like us to throw in a couple of front-row Superbowl tickets? Haw! Haw! Haw! Haw!"When his laughter ended, he explained that the Civic was such a hit in Europe that Honda was getting an extra $ 2,000 per car there, making Civic practicallyunavailable in the States. But he did offer to let me add my name to the waiting list--if I agreed to pay $1,000 over the sticker (标贴) price. When Honda dealerships No. 2 and No. 3 gave me the same story, I was ready to try anything. "Unfortunately, 96 Civics are in very short supply," his message said, "The best we can offer you is $1,200 under sticker price. “I was in happiness. Ah! Bliss! Ah, saving! Ah, revenge! When I picked up the car, it got better. Since there was no haggling (还价), the dealership fellow was friendly and congratulatory instead of everything. Now this, I thought, is the way to buy a car.Auto-By-Tel makes money by charging a fee to each participating dealer. The dealers make money by receiving hundreds of ready-to-buy customer names off the Web. And you save money because your price doesn't reflect advertising, test drives, sales commissions, and so on.My only regret is that I didn't think up Auto-By-Tel first.8. This text mainly tells about the story of _____.A. saving money chargingB. quarrelling with the dealersC. the experience of buying a carD. regretting buying a new Civic9. Lately, however, people have reported seeing them in quiet neighborhoods all across the country!Usually considered shy and seldom seen, these lions are becoming more noticeable. In addition, the lions appear to be moving east. They were even reported in the suburbs (郊区)of Boston,Philadelphia, and Chicago. It seems certain that these“kings of the mountains”are moving. Why?Scientists are not sure. Some think that as the mountain lion population increases in the weat, younger wild cats are leaving the area. These cats are searching for new homes and new places for food.“The young males are looking for new homes,”says Lynn Sadler, who is the director of the Mountain Lion Foundation in Sacramento,Calif.“People tend to create too many barriers(障碍),such as buildings, fences, roads, and noise. As the mountain lions seek newplaces and food and water sources(水源),these barriers get in their way.”The sightings have made people increasingly watc hful.Sometimes the“mountain lions”that people report seeing turn out to be large dogs or even house cats. But at least a few of the meetings have been real. The building of new roads, the growing of suburbs and the growing popularity of outdoor activities are all increasing the chances that people in various parts of the country may meet up with a mountain lion.Because many people are concerned about the reappearance of the American lion,an expert outlined some ways they can avoid attracting the wild cats:Never leave pets or pet food outside;properly care for farm animals;and plan public land use to enable the lions to move safely from one place to another.“To be fair,”says the expert,“mountain lions are trying to regain their homes. They were here first.N ow we need to find ways we can live together.”56 .Mountain lions are moving probably because________.A.the suburbs of big cities are peaceful and quietB.more roads are being built into the mountainsC.the number of the lions increases in the westD.young lions are seeking new partners57 .According to the passage,it is clear that________ .A.the reported sightings of mountain lions have not been provedB.people walking in the country may come across a lionC.fences have been built to protect the lionsD.mountain lions prefer populated areas58.To avoid attracting mountain lions, people are advised_________ .A.to build more roads for the lions to move safelyB.to keep a close watch on their farm animalsC.not to stay outdoorsD.not to raise pets59.Which is the best title for the passage?A.Mountain Lions in Unlikely PlacesB.Measures Taken to Avoid LionsC.Number of Sightings Going UpD.Mountain Lions Moving WestBWhat makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear. We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”60. The words “intelligent” and “brilliant” in the first paragraph probably mean _______while “dull” in the second paragraph means ________.A. bright and splendid; slow in thinking and understandingB. pretty and handsome; ordinary-lookingC. great and important; commonD. hopeful and helpful; careless61. A person ________ is more likely to become a genius.A. whose parents are cleverB. often thinking about difficult problemsC. often helped by his parents and teachersD. born with a good brain and putting it into active use62. It is better for parents ________.A. to praise and encourage their children more oftenB. to be hard on their childrenC. to leave their children alone with nothing to doD. to give their children as much help as possible63. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?A. Parents play an important part in their children‟s growth.B. The less you use your mind the duller you may become.C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.D. What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion.CIf you wish to become a better reader, here are four important points to remember about rate, or speed, of reading:1. Knowing why you are reading—what you are reading to find out—will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.2. Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, arithmetic problems, science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea.3. Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories meant for enjoyment, news, and letters from friends, items, or bits of news from local, or hometown, paper, telling what is happening to friends and neighbors.4. In some of your readings, you must change your speed from fast to slow to fast, as you go along. You need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful readings when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.64. According to the passage, your reading speed depends on ________.A. whether the reading material is easy or difficultB. what you are readingC. what your purpose in reading something isD. both B and C65. If one wants to be relaxed by reading, one should take up ________.A. a story bookB. a book on science and technologyC. news, letters from friendsD. some material full of information66. Which of the following readings should you read slowly and carefully?A. Fairy tales.B. Aesop‟s Fables.C. Directions for use of a machineD. An evening paper.67. Which of the following can best express the main idea of the passage?A. How to decide your reading speed.B. How to raise your reading speed.C. How to improve your reading skills.D. How to choose your reading materials.DThe most frightening words in the English language are, “Our computer is down.” You hear it more and more when you are on business. The other day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said, “I‟m sorry, I can‟t sell you a ticket. Our computer is down.”“If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket.”“I can‟t write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so.”I looked down on the computer and every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee and staring at the black screen. Then I asked her, “What do all you people do?”“We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not.”“So when it goes down, you go down with it.”“That‟s good, sir.”“How long will the computer be down?” I wanted to know.“I have no idea. Sometimes it‟s down for10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There‟s no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it‟s down it won‟t answer us.”After the girl told me they had no backup(备用)computer, I said. “Let‟s forget the computer. 河北省武邑中学2020-2021学年高二英语下学期6月期末复习试题2第一部分阅读理解 AI want you all to know that I’ve quit social media, and my life has gotten so much better. I mean, it’s only been 15 minutes but I can already tell I’m a different person. Fifteen minutes ago, I stopped using Facebook and Twitter. Within seconds, I noticed I am happier, less irritable, more contemplative (深思熟虑的) and balanced. I’m spending more time on activities that matter. Just in the past two minutes, I’ve looked at a book on my bo okshelf and briefly pondered opening it.I’m truly changing. This is going to sound crazy, but since quitting social media—now, let’s see, 16 minutes ago—all of my senses are enhanced. My eyesight is clearer. Food tastes better. I just smelled the first tulips of spring. I am jolted by a burst of energy. Every morning I am going to meditate or at least lie in my bed and consider meditating. What purpose does social media serve, anyhow? The academics tell us it’s making us miserable—the constant updates from friends with their expensive vacations and gossips about celebrities. If you think about it, the Internet was really only supposed to be for one thing: ordering socks from J. Crew. Then people started posting photographs of their dogs in Halloween costumes, and we all began sending Happy Birthday wishes to classmates we’d lost touch with since fifth grade, and the whole thing became the nightmare.Social media ruins perfectly good human beings. There are people I lovein real life and hate on social media. Worst still, social media stifles( 抑制) creativity. They’ve studied this in rats, you know. Scientists made rats quit using Facebook, and when they came back in a few hours, all of the rats were writing really solid debut novels. It’s been 17 minutes. I have a feeling that my quitting social media is having a physical effect. All I did was quit looking at my phone 900 times a day. I’ll tell them the secret. Quit social media. All of life’s annoying problems will be over. Your relationships will improve. Y ou’ll never feel down. You’ll never get stuck in traffic.Do I miss it? Thanks for asking. I don’t even know why I thought it was so important. I do not need to see the 800th photo from my co-worker’s trip.I have no idea how a hot topic is going on. And i t’s OK. I can’t imagine going back. I’ve quit social media. It’s only been 18 minutes, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to make it a full twenty.1. Why We Can’t Live Without the InternetC. The Influence of Social Media: Pros & ConsD. Quitting Social Media Will Save Your LifeBMost people have been taught that losing weight is a matter of simple math. Cut calories—specifically 3,500 calories, and you’ll lose a pound. But as it turns out, experts are learning that this decades-old strategy is actually pretty misguided. “This idea of ‘a calorie in and a calorie out’ when it comes to weight loss is not only outdated, it’s just wrong,” says Dr. Fa tima Cody Stanford, an obesity specialist at Harvard Medical School. The truth is that even careful calorie calculations don’t always yield(产生) uniform results. How your body burns calories depends on a number of factors. Three factors affect how your body processes calories.Your gut microbiome (肠道微生物). Trillions of organisms live in your gut, and the important types may influence how many calories your body absorbs from food. This may occur because some types of organisms are able to break down and use more calories from certain foods than other types of organisms. Researchers have found that people who are naturally thin have different typesof organisms living inside them than those who are overweight.Your metabolism (新陈代谢). Each body has a “set point” that governs weight, says Dr. Stanford. This set point reflects several factors, including your genes, your environment, and your behaviors. A region at the base of your brain stands guard to keep your body weight from dipping below that set point—which is not really a bonus if you’re trying to lose weight. The type of food you eat. Your food choices may also influence your calorie intake, and not just because of their specific calorie content. One 2019 study published in Cell Metabolism found that eating processed foods seems to spur people to eat more calories compared with eating unprocessed foods. If counting calories isn’t a dependable way to manage your weight, what can you do to shed extra pounds? Dr.Stanford recommends the following.Focus on diet quality. When planning your meals, focus on choosing unprocessed foods, including lean meats, whole grains, and lots of fruits and vegetables in their natural form.Exercise regularly. Aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week. Moderate exercise is done at a level where you can talk, but not sing.Consult a professional. “A lot of people believe it’s a moral failing if they are unable to lose weight,” says Dr. Stanford. But it’s not. As with other medical conditions, many people will need help from a doctor. Successful weight loss may require more than just diet and exercise. “Only 2% of peoplewho meet the criteria for the use of anti-obesity medications actually get them. This means that 98% of people who could be treated are n’t,” she says, “Don’t be afraid to seek help if you need it.”5. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?A. Old theories actually mislead us.B. Losing weight lies in losing calorie.C. Calorie calculations lead to good results.D. Losing weight by losing calorie is outdated.6. The processing of calories is affected by how you ______.A. choose the types of food you consumeB. focus on the quality of your dietC. adjust your brain to the “set point”D. reduce the organisms living in your gut7. T he underlined word “shed” in Paragraph 6 means “______”.A. weighB. produceC. loseD. cost8. With this, kids can see a magical rainbow come to life. M: That sounds good. How much does it cost?W: If we buy now, we can get a fifty percent discount, so it’ll cost just 15 dollars. M: That’s really reasonable. Let’s buy it for Lisa.W: But I think Tom will like it more. He is interested in science.M: You are right. Let’s choose something else for Lisa.W: How about this indoor doorbell? It lights up and sings songs whenever someone rings it.M: That sounds great. How much does it cost?W: 30 dollars.M: Hmn…I’d like to find something cheaper. Let’s keep look ing.W: Ok.Text 10Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another’s eyes. In conversation, eye contact lasts only about a second. When two Americans look searching into each other’s eyes, emotions are lifted and the relationship becomes much closer. Therefore, they carefully avoid this, except in proper situations. Proper street behavior in the United States requires a nice balance of attention and inattention. You are supposed to look at a passer-by just enough to show that you are aware of his presence. If you look too little, you appear too proud, and if you look too much, you are too curious. In England the polite listener stares at the speaker attentively and blinks his eyes occasionally as a sign of interest. That eye-blink says nothing to Americans, who expect the listener to nod or murmur something like “mm-hum〞.第二节到此完毕。
