Unfortunately, it hit an unknown mountain peak. The impact of the crash claimed the lives of a few passengers immediately, leaving many injured including my sister. To add a slight chance of being found out we waited in the open, as opposed to waiting in the plane, even though it was freezing cold At night, we slept side by side to keep ourselves warm and melted snow into water. We knew our food couldn't last us long, sticking to the bone that we would be rescued soon.We knew from radio that the outside world was trying to look for the missing aircraft. However, the aircraft was white and blended in with the snow, making it impossible to be seen from the sky. Later, our hope was dead when we found out via our radio that the rescue effort ended. Now climbing over the mountains ourselves to search for help seemed to be our only chance of survival. Although the crash site was an awful place, I still wished to stay there. But my sister would give in to her injuries soon if we were not rescued. Thus, together with two other people, I decided to walk through the icy wilderness for help. If we had known anything about climbing, we would have realized that we were already finished. The mountain we were about to challenge was one with slopes so steep that it would scare away a team of expert climbers. Our ignorance provided our only chance. We endured exhaustion and starvation and we had reached the top. To our horror, we found nothing. We were about to give up hope when I spotted a local farmer who later called the po Nice for help. I then guided the rescue team via a helicopter to the crash site. Finally after we had endured nineteen cruel days, the world found out that there were 15 survivors who had cheated death despite the odds.24. Why did the survivors stay outside the plane?A Because they didn't want to stay with dead people insiderB Because it's easier to obtain melted snow for water.C Because they hoped to be seen by the rescue people.D Because other passengers were against staying inside.25. Why did the author leave the crash site?A Because his sister might die without timely medical help.B Because he could get help from two experienced climbers.C Because the crash site was too terrible for him to stay in.D Because he would like to be tested by the steep mountain slopes.26. What do we know about the crash?A The public knew where the plane crashed from the radio.B The crash site was a wonderful place for survivors to stay.C More than half of the plane passengers were finally rescued.D At first, rescue people didn't notice the aircraft because of its color.27. What could we learn about the 15 survivors from the last paragraph?A They had told lies about death in spite of reality.B They had avoided death in spite of difficulties.C They climbed to the top of the mountain to seek help.D They marched for nineteen days before being discoveredC"Don't tell anyone". We hear these words when someone tells a secret to us. But it can be hard to keep a secret. We're often tempted to "spill the beans", even if we regret it later.According to Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine US, keeping a secret may well "become a burden ". This is because people often have an "obsessive(无法摆脱的) and anxious urge to share it with someone ".An earlier study, led by Anita E. Kelly a scientist at the University of Notre Dame, US, suggested that keeping a secret could cause stress. People entrusted with secrets can suffer from depression, anxiety, and body aches, reported the Daily Mail. But with secrets so often getting out why do people share them at all? Shah explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when people who are close do not share it with each other. "Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone. "according to Shah.He added that talkative people could let secrets slip out. But this doesn’t mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. To tell such a person a secret may cause them stress, and make them talk about the secret.Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret, you'd better put yourself in their position. Think about how you would feel to be told that you mustn't give the information away. Shah also recommended that if you accidentally give up someone's secret you should come clean about it. Let the person know that their secret isn't so secret anymore.28. The underlined phrase "spill the beans" is closest in meaning to ______.A let out a secretB tell the truthC eat our wordsD take gossip29. A person who is entrusted with a secret ______.A is often obsessed with a certain threatB often would rather not have been told about itC may suffer from physical or psychological problemsD usually has a strong desire to keep it to himself until death30. What can we learn from the text?A Quiet people are more likely to keep the secrets to themselves.B Sharing secrets helps establish friendship or get over the sense of guilt.C It's better to inform others of the chances of your leaking secrets beforehand.D Putting yourself in others' shoes helps realize the difficulty of keeping secrets.31. What's the best title for the text?A Walls have ears.B Every wall has a crackC A word spoken is past recalling.D Still tongues make wise heads.DThe Truth About the EnvironmentFor many environmentalists, the world seems to be getting worse. They have developed a hit-list of our main fears: that natural resources are running out, that the population is ever growing, leaving less and less to eat, and that species are becoming extinct in vast numbers. But a quick look at the facts shows a different picture. First, energy and other natural resources have become more abundant, not less so. Second, more food is now produced per head of the world's population than at any time in history. Fewer people are starving. Third, although species are indeed becoming extinct, only about 0.7% of them are expected to disappear in the next S0 years, not 25-50%, as has so often been predicted.Yet opinion polls suggest that many people hold the belief that our environment is worsening and three factors seem to contribute to this gap between perception(看法)and reality. One is the lopsidedness(偏颇) built into scientific research. Scientific funding goes mainly to areas with many problems. That may be wise policy, but it will also create an impression that many more potential problems exist than is the caseSecondly, environmental groups need to be noticed by the mass media. They also need to keep the money rolling in. Understandably perhaps, they sometimes overstate their arguments. In 1997, for example, the World Wide Fund for Nature issued a press release entitled: "Two thirds of the world's forests lost forever". The truth turns out to be nearer 20%.A third source of confusion is the attitude of the media. People are extremely more curious about bad news than good. Newspapers and broadcasters are there to provide what the public wants. That, however, can lead to significant misunderstanding. An example was Americas encounter with EI Nino(厄尔尼诺)in 1997 and 1998. This climatic phenomenon was accused of hurting tourism, causing allergies, melting the ski-slopes, and causing 22 deaths. However, the damage it did was estimated at $4 billion but the benefits amounted to some $19 billion. These came from higher winter temperatures (which saved an estimated 850 lives, reduced heating costs and diminished spring floods caused by meltwaters). It is extremely important that we look at the facts if we want to make the best possible decisions for the future. It may be costly to be overly optimistic, but more costly still to be too pessimistic.32. Where can you find details that best support the underlined belief "our environment is worsening"A In paragraph 1.B In paragraph 2.C In paragraph 5.D In paragraph 6.33. As for scientific research what is the author's major concern?A The lack of financial supportB The need to produce results.C The desire to solve every problem.D The selection of areas to research.34. What does the author think of the environmental problems?A They will get worse and worse unless we act right now.B They only affect environmental groups and the media.C They are not as serious as we have been led to believe.D They have been reduced thanks to public awareness.35. What is the author's attitude to the global environment?A Indifferent.B Objective.C Optimistic.D Puzzled.
