Dr Rocio said, “If you're a seedling in a poor land — the top of a mountain or a sand hill, for example-and you’re lucky enough to end up underneath a big plant, your chances of survival are certainly better than if you landed somewhere on your own. What we have found, which was surprising, is an established large plant, called a ‘nurse’, protects a seedling; it also produces more flowers than the same plants of similar large size growing on their own.”Other benefits of nurse-seedling partnerships include that more variety of plants growing together can have a positive effect on the environment. For example, vegetation areas with nurse plants with more flowers might be able to attract higher numbers of pollinators(传粉者)in an area, in turn supporting insect and soil life and even provide a greater range of different fruit types for birds and other animals.“The biggest winner for this system of nursing a plant is biodiversity(生物多样性),” Dr Rocio said. “The more biodiversean area, the greater number of species of plants, insect life, mammals and birds, and the better the chances of long-term healthy functioning of the environment and ecosystems. ” This system is win-win for adultand seedling plants in unfavorable environments. The research is of value to those who manage and protect plants in tough environments. Most home gardeners and farmers plan to ensure their soil and conditions are the best they can be for plant growth, but the findings might be of value to those who garden in bare places.4. What is a common understanding of plants?A. They can help each other.B. They can survive ill conditions.C. They compete with each other.D. They grow well on their own.5. What will happen to seedling plants if they grow under adult plants?A. They will produce more flowers.B. They will die owing to competition.C. They will make adult plants larger.D. They will get support from adult plants.6. What is the effect of the nurse-seedling partnership?A. It leads to unfavorable environments.B. It produces long-term healthy chances.C. It attracts higher and larger pollinators.D It provides a more variety of plant types.7. Who will benefit from the new research?A. People studying organic farming.B. People protecting plants on sand hills.C. People wanting to change biodiversity.D. People keeping more animals on the farm.CAt first glance, there is nothing unusual about BingoBox’s convenience store–shelves packed with snacks line the walls, attracting passers-by through the glass windows. But upon closer look, BingoBox is no ordinary store. The door unlocks only after customers scan (扫描) aQR code to enter, and there is no cashier — just a lone checkout counter (柜台) in a corner. The Shanghai-based company is one of many unmanned store operators (运营者) opening outlets all over China, hoping to improve slim profit by reducing staff costs.“Ifstaff costs rise quickly, that puts greater pressure on low-profit businesses like convenience stores and supermarkets,” said Andrew Song, an analyst at Guotai Junan Securities. “InChina, manpower costs have been rising ly quickly.”However, the future vision of shopping without a check-out person is still a work in progress. A Post reporterwho visited a BingoBox store inShanghaiwas briefly locked in when trying to exit without buying anything. Although a sign near the exit stated that empty-handed customers can leave by scanning a QR code, no QR code was to be found. Repeated calls to the customer service hotline went unanswered. The idea of unmanned stores first caught the world’s attention in December last year. Equipped with technology such as RFID tags, mobile payment systems and facial and movement recognition, such stores collect large amounts of data that give operators a better idea of consumer preferences and buying habits, which can then be used to optimize (使最优化) operations and make more efficient inventory decisions. For companies like BingoBox, lower operating costs also mean it can afford to expand its reach to areas with less foot traffic or fewer people, according to its founder and chief executive ChenZilin.8. What makes BingoBox store look like an ordinary convenience store?A. No cashier to check out.B. A lone checkout counter.C. Shelves packed with goods.D. Entering by scanning a QR code.9. Why are unmanned stores popular with operators?A. The customers prefer mobile payment systems.B. The unmanned stores help improve profit with lower labor costs.C. The employees focus on consumer preferences and buying habits.D. The operators care more about operations and inventory decisions.10. Why is the reporter’s case mentioned in the passage?A. To show his anger and dissatisfaction.B. To warn people not to go to a BingoBox store.C. To explain unmanned stores still have a long way to go.D. To complain that QR code service is not convenient at all..11. What can we infer from the chief executive Chen Zilin?A. Nowadays all stores should be equipped with advanced technology.B. The operators collect data about consumer preferences and buying habits.C. BingoBox made wiser decisions based on the data collected in those unmanned stores.D. The operators can open unmanned supermarkets in more distant places with low cost.DA team of engineers atHarvardUniversity in trying to create the first robotic fly. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks."The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of its components is off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own’ said Robert Wood, a Harvard engineering professor. They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings hasa number of interdependencies (相互依赖)on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it d connected to,” said Wood. While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites,in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. "Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications.“You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animal, but using these robots instead” he said. "So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day-to-day basis.”12. What is the typical characteristic of the robotic fly?A. It's automatic.B.It's very small.C. It's controllable.D. It's quite powerful.13. We can infer from the passage that the robotic flyer can____ .A. act as a spy planeB. help do farm workC.fly at a very high speedD. answer many scientific questions14. What is Wood's idea about the robotic fly according to the last paragraph?A. It is highly questionable.B. It has wide practical applications.C. It gives scientists interest in flying machines.D. It points to a new direction in studying biology.15. What can be the best title for the passage?A. Harvand's Study in the Field of Insects.B. A Breakthrough in Engineering ScienceC. An Interesting Invention一Robotic FlyD.

ADo you have a job? If you do, you’ll know the world of work can be tough -long hours, boring tasks and stress. But it can bring benefits too, such as a regular salary. Maybe that's why more of us are now taking on a side hustle - another name for a second job.For Some having two jobs is a necessity -- a way to make ends meet and provide extra income. But it now seems that more people want to put their skills and passions into practice to make money. These tend to be entrepreneurial young people who want to work on their own projects alongside their main source of income.According to Henley Business School, around one in four workers run at least one side hustle business, half of which were started in the past two years. Those aged 25 to 34 are most likely to be involved, with37 percent thought to run a sideline of some kind. It calculates that the average side hustler makes about 20 percent of their income through their second job.But what's interesting is that many millennials (千禧一代)are turning their hand to new jobs not just for money and security. Research has found that almost three-quarters of people are following a passion or exploring a new challenge. Becci Mai Ford, who works some of the time for atelecommunications company to pay the bills, spends the rest of her time developing her craft company. She says goingfull-timeis "not financially worth it right now but it fuels my creative soul and makes me happy".Of course having a side hustle means you are self-employed, which can give you flexibility to work when you like, but it can be risky. You sometime work on a zero-hours contract and may not get offered enough work. Or what was originally your passion may become more of a chore. However;this could be the best way to try out a new career or follow a passion while not giving up the dayjob.21. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the reason for people to take on a side hustle?A. To make money.B. To obtain job satisfaction.C. To have the flexibility to work.D. To enjoy a risky lifestyle.22.The author explains the study from Henley Business School by .A. describing the processB. making a comparisonC. presenting research findingsD. analyzing cause and effect23. What is the author's attitude towards having a second job?A. Critical.B. Indifferent.C. Neutral.D. Favorable:BWith Chinese consumers hit by quarantine (隔离期)and travel restrictions as well as just cautious about going out to the shops due to the coronavirus epidemic(流行病),companies in China areexperimenting with new tricks to make sales.Oil giant Sinopec - keen to get customers back in their cars and help farmers due to roadblocks - launched a new project last month called "zerotouch" vegetable sales at its 6,000 gas stations in 147 Chinese cities. Consumers place and pay for orders on the app and when they drive up, gas station employees put the vegetables into their car trunk, eliminatingany need for human-to-human contact."The coronavirus outbreak has made it difficult for people to shop as before," said Li Hong, vice president of Sinopec's convenience store sales division. "Travel demand has been falling, but demand for food is pretty rigid."Mengniu Dairy, China's dairy producer, is racing to add more vending machines to the 10,000 it currently has, saying the epidemic has driven unexpectedly strong demand for the sales channel. Its system allows customers to order products like ‘milk and yoghurt online which can then be picked up from their localvending machine "The virus outbreak has decreased consumption for dairy products as people are unwilling to go to the supermarket,"said Meng Fanjie; head of the company's Communist Party committee.Luckin Coflfee, a competitive rival to Starbucks, now also offers the sanitizer (消毒)products (e.g. hand soap)besides coffee. Liu Xingliaging, an independent retait analyst, said, however, that Luckin'sstrategy would have only a modest impact. “At best some users will place an order when they buy coffee, but nobody is deliberately cho osing the Luckin app just to buy sanitizer”24. According to the passage, why did some companies adopt new selling methods?A. Citizens were not allowed to go out.B. The demand for travel and food declined sharply.C.The coronavirus epidemic changed people's way of life.D. Companies desired to grasp the chance to defeat their competitors.25. What does the underlined word "eliminating" in Paragraph 2 most probably refer to?A. meetingB. removingC. decreasingD. limiting26. The passage is written mainly to .A. illustrate the difficulty caused by the coronavirus epidemicB. explain the changes made by some companies in the epidemicC. describe the challenges some companies met during the epidemicD. reveal the intelligence people showed in the coronavirus epidemicCPeople may set an alarm on the phone or clock that sounds like this: beep beep beep. That hard, unpleasant sound may be making it harder to shake off the sleepy feeling in the morning known as grogginess. So, is there a better way to wake up? A recent study says yes. The answer is music .The study, carried out by researchers in Australia, involved 50 people. The researchers found that people who wake up to musical alarms reported feeling more awake and alert. Stuart McFarlane, a lead writer of the study stated, "We are very surprised by these findings as one might expect a harsh beeping sound to be more successful;” at waking up a person.Sleep inertia is another term for grogginess. It means a person has a heavy feeling when waking up, and has trouble getting moving again after sleeping. McFarlane said people need to better understand sleep inertia's harmful effects on human performance later in the day.Not everyone will experience the full effect. But for those who do, "care should be taken" when performing duties that require a top performance within this period, he said. This includes "dangerous tasks like driving or riding our bikes" shortly after waking up. The same is true for people who work in dangerous situations shortly after they wake, including firefighters and pilots. So, what makes musical alarms better for waking up? The researchers think the music may be more successful in reducing sleep inertia because it has several tones, compared to the single tone of a "beeping" alarm. McFarlane said that the changes over time between the music tones may help increase a person's attention when waking from sleep. And is there a kind of music that is best to wake up to? There may be, McFarlane said. "We could suggest alarm sounds that are tune full and easy to hum or sing along with. The current sounds I have been using include “Close to me' by the Cure and'Borderline' by Madonna."No matter how you wake up, experts say, the amount of sleep you get also matters 一a lot.27. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?A. What is grogginess?B. Why are musical alarms better?C. Which music is the best?D. How can we overcome grogginess?28. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Sleep inertia is another cause for grogginess.B. How long a person sleeps is of great importance.C. The 'beeping' alarm is not effective mainly because of its noisy tone.D. It is dangerous for everyone to drive or ride bicycles shortly after waking up.29. The paragraph following this passage is likely to focus onA. examples of good musical alarmsB.more findings of the application of musicC.explanations about why music is more helpfulD. suggestions on how to sleep well and feel fresh each morning.30. In which section of a magazine may you find the passage?A. Health.B. Fiction.C. Technology.D.

AHere's another reason to get off the couch and start working up a sweat. Time the exercise right and you could improve your ability to remember something new. That's the finding of a new study. But it all comes down to timing. To lock up the new information, start burning those calories roughly four hours after you took in the new information. That's according to researchers at aninstitute on brain, cognition (认知) and behavior. It's at Radboud University's Medical Center, in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Eelco van Dongen and his colleagues shared their new findings in the June 16 Current Biology. This precisely timed memory trick comes from tests with 72 people. Each learned the location of 90 objects on a computer screen. Afterwards, some of the members watched relaxing nature videos. Others worked up a sweat on body-building bikes, changing between hard and easy riding for 35 minutes. Their workouts came either soon after the cram session (考前突击复习)or four hours later. Two days later they were tested again, Those who remembered the objects' sites best were thepeople who had waited four hours after their learning before riding. Among those who rememberedsites correctly, the four-hour delay before biking also led to more consistent activityin an area important for memory. It's known as the hippocampus (海马区) .The consistent activity here suggests that the memories had been strong, the scientists say.Van Dongen's team does not yet know how exercise works its memo magic. They do, however, have a guess. Aerobic exercise leads to me creation of several important chemicals in the brain. One is a protein known as BDNF. The other is dopamine (DO-puh-meen). It can helpconvey messages between nerve cells. These two chemicals may help strengthen memories by linking brain cells, the researchers suspect.21.The best way to lock up the new information is A.to get off the couch soon after their learning.B.to do sports for four hours and work up asweatC.to see some nature videos on a computer screenD.to do sports four hours after taking in new information22.Which is NOT right about the experiment?A.There are 90 objects on the screen.C.72 people took part in the experiment.B.They were tested again two days later.D.They all had to do riding for 35minutes.23.How does exercise work its memory magic?A.By the hippocampus.C.A protein known as BDNF.B.No one knows for sure.D.A protein known as dopamine. BFor the Swiss, punctuality is a source of deep satisfaction. They obtain real joy from the fact that life unfolds on time and in a highly efficient manner. Whenever I visit Switzerland, I gothrough several stages of punctuality reaction. At first it delights me, especially if I'm coming from Neighbouring Italy or France with their rather more flexible approach to timekeeping. By contrast, life in Switzerland is enthusiastic and dependable. If someone says they will meet me at 2 pm, they arrive at 2 pm not 2:05 (or 1:55,for that matter). I like this, for a while. Then it annoys me. The extreme punctuality strikes me as a kind of being mean, and I find myself agreeing with the English writer Evelyn Waugh who said that "punctuality is the virtue ofthe bored."That is unfair though, and finally I come to appreciate Swiss punctuality for what it is: a deep expression of respect for other people. A punctual person is a considerate one. By showing up ontime for everything, a Swiss person is saying, in effect, " I value your time and, by extension, Ivalue you."It's no coincidence that the Swiss are the world's watchmakers. Which came first, the precise clocks and watches or the precise people? Hard to say, but the result is the same: a nation where the trains and everything else really do run on time. How to explain this punctuality? No one knows for sure. But a popular theory is that, historically, it arises from the tough, mountainous area. Either you planted your crops on time andharvested them at the correct time or, well, you starved.Punctuality, sadly, is a dying art in many parts of the world. Mobile phones are partly to blame. We feel less compelled (紧迫的) to arrive on time if we can always text to say we're running a few minutes late. I don't sense that is happening in Switzerland, though.Punctuality is not without its weaknesses. Extreme punctuality also creates an expectation, and if that expectation is not met, disappointment follows. On those rare occasions when thingsdo not function smoothly, the Swiss get nervous, confused and angry.24.What's NOT the author's attitude towards the Swiss punctuality?A.Pleasant.B.Exhausted.C.Annoyed.D.Appreciated.25.What do the Swiss people want to show by arriving on time?A.To show their respect for other people.B.To show that they have the best watches.C.To show that they are considerate persons.D.To show that they are the best watchmakers in the world.26.The passage is probably taken from a.A.A history bookB.A business newspaperC.A cultural guidebookD.An economic magazineCA contest organised by Airbnb is offering three lucky winners the chance to spend a night inthe company of sharks.
