You can check this by making a simple plumb line (铅锤线)with a piece of string and weight. You haven’t got any string? With a little effort, and not much money, most of us could reduce our energy diets by 25 percent or more—doing the Earth a favor while also helping our wallets. Not long age. My wife, PJ, and I tried a new diet—not to lose a little weight but to answer an annoying question about climate change. Scientists have reported recently that the world is bending up even faster than predicted only a few years ago, and that the consequences could be severe if we don’t keep reducing emissions(排放)of carbon dioxide(CO2)and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere. We decided to try an experiment. For one month we recorded our personal emissions of CO2. . We wanted to see how much we could cut back, so we went on a strict diet. The average US household(家庭)produces about 150 pounds of CO2 a day by doing common-place things like turning on air-conditioning or driving cars. That’s more than twice the European average and almost five times the global average, mostly because Americans drive more and have bigger houses. But how much should we try to reduce? For an answer, I checked with Tim Flannery, author of The Weather Makers: How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth. In his book, he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personalemissions to keep the world from reaching extremely important tipping points, such as the melting (融化)of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica. ―To stay below that point, we need to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 percent,‖ he said. Good advice, I thought. I’d opened our bed room windows to let in the wind. We’d gotten so used to keeping our air-conditioning going around the clock. I’d almost forgotten the windows even opened. We should not let this happen again. It’s time for us to change our habits if necessary. Why did the author and his wife try a new diet?A. To take special kinds of foodB. To respond to climate changC. To lose weightD. To improve their health(18)The underlined words ―tipping points‖ most probably refer toA. freezing pointsB. burning pointsC. melting pointsD. boiling points(19)It can be inferred from the passage thatA. it is necessary to keep the air-conditioning on all the timeB. it seems possible for every household to cut emissions of CO2C. the average US household produces about 3,000 pounds of CO2 a monthD. the average European household produces about 1,000 pounds of CO2 a month(20)It can be inferred from the passage thatA. it is necessary to keep the air-conditioning on all the timeB. it seems possible for every household to cut emissions of CO2C. the average US household produces about 3,000 pounds of CO2 a monthD. the average European household produces about 1,000 pounds of CO2 a month短文填词(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)(1)暂缺。

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:Television has now come to nearly every family. It has played a very important part in people's life. School children in the US watch TV about 25 hours a week. Some people feel that television is good for children because it helps them learn about their country and the world. With the help of programs of education, children do better in school. Other people feel that there are too many programs about love and crime on TV, and that even programs of education don't help children a lot. Children simply watch too much television, so they don't do a lot of other important things for their education. Children of three to six learn to speak their language and talk with people. When they are watching TV, they are only listening to the language, and they aren't talking with anyone. When school children watch TV, they read less. Because of this, they don't learn to read or write quickly at school. All children learn by doing, and they need time to play in order to learn about the world. When they watch TV, they play less. They also have less time to communicate with their parents and friends, and they have less time for sports.Recently, fifteen families in Denver decided to stop watching TV for a month or more. At first it was difficult, but there were soon a lot of good changes. The children read, played, and exercised more, and the family became full of joy. The first part has to do with how the teacher feels about students. The second part has to do with what the teacher does in the classroom. In traditional education, the teacher may feel that students are not very grown up. Usually, teachers are older than students, and teachers feel that students are young and do not know much about the world. The teacher feels that he must tell the students what to do most of the time, and that he must make the students study specific things. In open education, the teacher's feelings are very different. The teacher feels that the students are individuals first, and students second. He expects his students to be responsible for the things they do, just as adults are. A student's ideas and feelings are just as important as the teacher's. The teacher allows his students to decide what they want to do, and does not make them study specific subjects or things. The teacher letsthem decide what to study and how much to study. It's very important for the teacher to show how he feels about the students. The second part of the idea of open education has to do with what the teacher does in the classroom. In the traditional classroom, the students are told what to do. There is a list of things that the students must do to finish the class. There are rules made by the teacher that the students must follow, even if the students see no reason for the rules. In open education, the teacher allows the students to choose what to do. They may study, or talk, or do nothing at all if they want. There are no specific things for the students to do. There are no traditionalrules made by the teacher. The only rules in an open classroom are rules for everyone' s safety. The students are allowed to discover subjects in the open classroom, instead of being made to study them. Open education is a really complex idea.51. What is this passage mainly about?A. The system of traditional education.B. The characteristics of open education.C. A comparison of two kinds of education.D. An emphasis on open education.52. Not wanting to give up his apartment and move back with his parents, he did what many young Americans are doing: he signed up with a temp (临时的) agency, which places workers on short-term jobs. Temporary workers such as Eric comprise 20 percent of the US workforce. In 1985, 417,000 workers were classified as temporary help. In 2005, there was more than 2.5 million, according to Labor Department data.Using temporary workers allows companies to increase or decrease the number of staff as their workloads change. It also allows companies to avoid the costs involved in hiring and firing long-term employees. Many temp agency owners and career specialists say temping is a good way for recent graduates to get experience. “Short-term jobs let graduates try out different companies to find the best fit,” said Pegi Wheatley, owner of a San Francisco temp agency. But things don’t always work out that way. “When I started temping, I had this idea that a temporary job could turn full-time. It worked for a friend of mine, but that didn’t happen for me,” said Eric, who quickly became bored with his office work. Eric stayed with the temp agency because he could earn US $ 10 an hour doing office work. Other short-term jobs, such as working as a store clerk or in a café, pay about US $ 7.But there are drawbacks for the higher pay. Because in theUS, health insurance is provided through employer, most temps are not entitled to workplace health benefits. Eric ran the risk that an accident or illness would land him in the hospital with no way to pay the bill. Other drawbacks, though less serious, still mean that temping for most graduates is exactly what its name implies ----a temporary choice. Instability, gaps between contracts, lack of vacation time and isolation from other employees are drawbacks, too.56. Eric took a short-term job mainly because _______.A. he didn’t want to give up his apa rtmentB. he liked to try out different companiesC. he wanted to get more experienceD. a short-term job is easier to do57. According to the passage, in the year of 2005, more than _______ workerswere classified as temporary help.A. 2.5 millionB. 12.5 millionC. 4.17 millionD. 25 million58. Which is NOT mentioned as an advantage of temping?A. It gives recent graduates experience.B. It enables employers to adjust their workforce.C. A temporary job will turn full-time.D. Employers can reduce their costs.59. Eric stayed with the temp agency for some time because _______.A. he liked his office workB. he was satisfied with the payC. his employer provided health insuranceD. he hated gaps between contracts60. What does the underlined word “drawbacks” in Paragraph 5 mean?A. BenefitsB. CompromisesC. RisksD. DisadvantagesSection B Short Answer Questions (15 points, 3 for each)Directions: Answer each of the questions in less than 10 words.Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman.A man goes shopping because he needs something. He knows what he wants, and his purpose is to find it and buy it; the price is a second consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask for what they want. If the shop has it, the salesman quickly produces it, and the business of trying it on follows at once. And if all goes well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with no chat and to everyone’s satisfaction. Now how does a woman go out buying clothes? Her shopping is not always based on needs. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look a round.” She will try on any number of things. The most im portant in her mind is the idea of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always in the lookout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one shelf toanother, to and fro, often slowing down her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a tiring process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.61. Why does a man go shopping?62. What is a man’s second consideration when he buys something?63. How quickly can the deal be completed for a man?64. What is the most important idea for a woman when she buys something?65. What do most dress shops provide for the waiting husbands?IV. Translation (20 points, 4 for each)Directions: In this part, there are five items which you are required to translate into Chinese. Reading Comprehension (40 points)Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage 1Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageTo understand how Americans think about things, it is necessary to understand “the point”. Americans mention it often: “Let’s get right to the point,” they will say. “My point is …”“What is the point of all this?”The “point” is the idea of the piece of information that Americans suppose is, or should be, at the center of people’ thinking, writings, and spoken comments. Speakers and writers are supposed to “make their points clear”, meaning that they are supposed to say or write clearly the idea of information they wish to express.People from many other cultures have different ideas about the point. Africans traditionally tell stories that express the thoughts they have in mind, rather than stating the point is. Thus, while an American might say to a friend , “I don’t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit,” a Japanese might say , “Maybe this other coat would look eve n better than the one you have on .”Americans value a person who “gets right to the point.” Japanese are likely to consider such a person insensitive if not rude. The Chinese and Japanese languages are characterized by vagueness(模糊) and ambiguity(歧义).The precision and directness Americans associate with “the point” cannot be achieved ,and lest not with any grace, in Chinese and Japanese. Speakers of those languages thus have to learn a new way of reasoning and expressing their ideas if they are going to communicate satisfactorily with Americans.36. According to the passage, American expect speakers and writers to ______A. be clear about their man ideasB. give as much information as possibleC. express their personal viewsD. be honest about their true feelings37. Which of the following people will tell a story to express what they have in mind?A. AmericansB. AfricansC. JapaneseD. Chinese38. In the sentence “I don’t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit”, the word “outfit” most probably means_____.A. officeB. timeC. speechD. clothes39. According to the passage, the Japanese may consider it unacceptable to be_____.A. indirectB. straightforwardC. poorly-dressedD. curious40. In order to communicate with Americans satisfactorily, speakers of Chinese need to____A. lean the language wellB. change their way of thinkingC. be careful about their choice of wordsD. explain their reasons clearlyPassage 2Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageMany young people tell me they want to be writers. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these young people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours lonely at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want write,”I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”The reality is that writing is lonely, private and poor-paying. for every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never realized. When I left a 20-year career in the U. S. Army to become a freelance writer (自由撰稿者), I had expectation at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a true writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten any breakthrough and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell story that I barely made enough to eat .But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who gave up halfway. I would keep putting my dream to the test---even though it meant living with uncertaintyand fear of failure. This is the shadow-land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.41. The passage means to ______A. warn young people of the hardships that a writer has to experienceB. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writerC. show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fameD. encourage young people to pursue a writing career42. What can be concluded from the passage?A. Genuine writers often find their work interesting and rewarding.B.A writer’s success depends on luck rather than on effort.C. Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolationD. The chance for a writer to become successful are small.43. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career?A. He wasn’t able to produce a single book.B. He wasn’t able to have a rest fo r a whole year.C. He found his dream would never come true.D. He hadn’t seen a change for the better.44. When the author began writing, he only had_____.A. a second-hand typewriter.B. a friend who helped him find a room to liveC. a cold room without a bathroomD. empty expectations of his future45. “shadow-land” in the last sentence refers to_____.A. the piece of land one often dreams aboutB. the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reachedC. the bright future that one is looking forward toD. a world that exists only in one’s imaginationPassage 3Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageMy friend Mike was shaking his head in disbelief. “That young woman who just waited onme ,”he said ,pointing to an employee of the fas t food restaurant where we eating , “had to call someone over to help her count out the change .the cash register(出纳机) showed her I need 99 nets ,but she couldn’t figure out how to count out the coins .”I understood Mike’s concern .What we have done in thi s country ,although unintentionally ,is to create several generations of individuals most of most of whom have no idea how to reason, how to do simple math ,how to do research ,or finally how to be creative .The reason for this is our overuse of information technology :video games, television, digital watches, calculators, and computer. information technology feeds us information without requiring us to think about it and let us perform operations without understanding them.It is time for us to take a hand look at an educational system that only teaches our children how to push buttons. Our kids can’t tell time if the clock has hands .they can use calculators but cannot add, subtract, divide or multiply. Video games have taken the place of active imaginative play .Although most of them are technically literate ,they choose not to read .They are so used to television and movies that they cannot use their imagination to stay interested in a book .It is not enough to recognize the problem. What we need is solution .the one I offer is simple to suggest , but may be impossible to carry out. We must unplug our children .If wedon’t, they will never learn how to solve problems. They will never learn basic reasoning skills and will certainly not develop creativity .Instead of filling classrooms with electronics, let’s to perform computer operations, but to figure and to figure and reason for themselves. They must see how things work and how process leads to results, they must also stretch their imagination.46. What seems to be the problem of the employee of the fast food restaurant?A. She does not know how to count coins.B. She is unable to solve simple math problem.C. She has no small change for the customers.D. She does not know how to operate cash registers47. What is the author’s and his friend Mike’s concern?A. The educational system is now creating people who can’t think for themselves.B. People now rarely do things on their own.C. Computers feed us too much information nowadays.D. The restaurant does not provide good service.48. For children to have imaginative minds, they must_____.A. be born with talentsB. be taught to read the right booksC .be dragged away from machinesD. have a large vocabulary49. What is the most probable meaning of “unplug o ur children” in the last paragraph?A. Give them freedom of enjoying themselves.B. Teach themC. Get them off TV and computer games.D. Turn off all the power in the schools.50. The conclusion of the article is that the authorbelieves_____A. electronics should have no place in classroomsB. information technology helps us to do things we do not understandC. all books benefit children more than anything elseD. information technology is new being overusedPassage4Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageAll of us communicate with one another nonverbally(不使用语言地),as well as with words. Most of the time we’re not aware that we are doing it. We gesture with elbows or a hand, meet someone else’s eyes and look away, change positions in a c hair. These actions we assume are occasional. However in recent years researchers have discovered that there is a system to them almost as consistent and understandable as language. One important kind of body language is eye behavior. Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another’s eyes. In our normal conversation, each eye contact lasts only about a second before one or both of us look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other’s eyes, they become more intimate. Therefore, we carefully avoid this, except in suitable situations.Researchers who are engaged in the study of communication through body movement are not prepared to spell out a precise vocabulary of gestures. When an American rubs his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with someone or refusing something. But there are other possible interpretations(解释),too. Anther example: when a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man’s eyes a little longer than is usual, it can be sign of respect; it can be a challenge to the professor’s authority; itcan be something else entirely. The researches look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture.Communications between human beings would be just dull if it were all done with words.51. The main idea of this article is that________A. study of communication through body movement is a new scienceB. body movements are as important as words in communicationC. all of us communicate with one anotherD. eye behavior is the most important part in body language52. What do researchers think of body language?A. Body language can be understood and used by people in communication.B. Body language is more important than spoken language in communication.C. Body language has been discovered in recent years.D. Body language is the study of communication via body movement.53. The word“intimate” in paragraph two probably means______.A. greatB. closeC. goodD. important54. According to the passage, you make an American person feel uncomfortable if you_____.A. meet his eyesB. avoid meeting his eyesC. stare into his eyes for one secondD. look into his eyes for a long time55. The sentence “the researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture” means______.A. the researchers explain the meaning of a gesture according to the situation in which it is usedB. the researchers believe that one gesture has only one meaningC. the researchers think that one gesture cannot be used in different situationsD. the researchers look for patterns in textbooks to explain the meaning of a gestureV. You must read the four choicesmarked A,B,C and D, and decide which is the best answer. Then mark thecorresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.<2’×20>Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. It has been a widespread belief that the American family is dying. But a new study reveals that the American family is stronger than ever. This study affords surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life. The American family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller, men and women are becoming more equal, and the divorce rate is higher. But despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people remarry, but only 2% marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up.There is no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home. So far the amount of educational or development time hasn’t varied very much, whether or not the mother works outside the home. In fact, working mothers try to make up for it by setting aside time only for their children. The study shows that television is by far the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century. The most important activity for children up to age 14 is watching television.School is the second most time-consuming activity for children. They spend an average of about 19 hours a week in school. A larger proportion of children go to school earlier than ever before, and they stay in school longer. Another big change is that the proportion of very young children in daycare centers <日托站> has almost doubled in recent years. Compared with these two dramatic changes in child activity, the changes caused by mothers working outside the home appear very small.1 The main idea of this article is that _______.A. the American family is dyingB. young people today don’t want to get marriedC. the American family is changing, but it is stronger than everD. education has resulted in dramatic changes in the American family2 Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Marriage is more popular than before.B. Many divorced people remarry.C. The majority of marriages last long.D. Working mothers devote less time to their children.3 The author of this article believes that ________.A. the American family is here to stayB. children should not watch so much televisionC. mothers should not work when their children are smallD. teenage marriages should be encouraged4 What is the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century?A. The daycare center.B. Television.C. The school.D. Development time.5 According to the writer, which two major factors have led to the belief that the Americanfamily is dying?A. The divorce rate is high and working mothers neglect their children.B. The divorce rate is high and children care more about television than anything else.C. Divorces are increasing and many teenage marriages break up.D. Children stay in school longer and mothers have little time to take care of them. Passage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. What you give your relatives, friends, husband, or wife can help you know yourself better. Also, what they give you can tell you something about their personality. Most gift-giving <andgetting> shows nothing more than the spirit of love and friendship. But it is possible to form some associations between the kinds of things bought and the people who buy them. Here is a guide to who gives you wha t --- and why.The clothes you wear tell something about your personality. They tell the world not only how you want to be seen but how you see yourself as well. When someone gives you something to wear that agrees with your self-image, they’resaying, "I agree with you. I like you the way you are.〞Such a gift should be taken as a form of compliment. On the other hand, a gift of clothing that does not match your personality could be an insult to your character.Making something by hand has become the exception in many countries toda y-somuchso that giving a homemade gift is sometimes considered unusual. If you receive a homemadegift, you’re lucky. It may not be made perfectly, but it will show a certain quality of love. People who give homemade gifts may be said to be very generous. They are given time and emotion, two important characteristics of being creative.A person who thinks of food when thinking of a gift is good example of what human warmth means. Whether you give a box of chocolates, a bag of oranges, or a ball of cheese, all carry the same message of comfort and support.People who give books as gifts either like reading or would like everyone to think they do. If you happen to receive a large, heavy book, this giver may be much more interested in the way things appear than in the way they actually are. Of course, reading is a way of feeling the emotions of another person and of learning new things. Giving a book can be a way of sharing a feeling or a newly learned meaning. The giver is probably trying to say to you what the book said to him.6 The first paragraph is written to tell readers that ________.A. the gifts you give can help you understand yourself betterB. the gifts you receive are helpful for you to know the personality of those who give themC. gifts can show friendship and loveD. there is a certain relationship between the kinds of gifts and the people who give them7 A person who likes the self-image of another person will give the latter ________.A. clothesB. a homemade giftC. a gift that agrees with the personality of the receiverD. a gift that matches the character of the giver8 Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. What you wear can tell something about your personality.B. Homemade gifts are not welcomed in some countries.C. People who give books as gifts either like reading or would like everyone to think they do.D. Reading books given to you as gifts can be a way of sharing a feeling with the giver.9 If you give a large, heavy book as a gift, it may show that _________.A. you are knowledgeableB. the receiver is interested in readingC. you dislike readingD. you are more interested in the appearance of the book than in its contents10 People who want to show their love towards others often give _______.A. homemade giftsB. delicious foodC. expensive clothesD. interesting booksPassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. My love of nature goes right back to my childhood, to the times when I stayed on my grandparent’s farm in Suffolk. I think it was my grandmother who encouraged me more than anyone: she taught me the names of wildflowers and got me interested in looking at the countryside, so it seemed obvious to go on to do zoology at university.I didn’t get my first camera until after I’d graduated, when I was due to go diving in Norway and needed a method of recording the sea c reatures I would find there. My father didn’t know anything about photography, but he bought me an Exacta, which was really quite a good camera for the time, and I went off to take my first pictures of sea starfish. I became keen very quickly, and I learnt how to develop and print.I’ve tried from the beginning to produce pictures which are always biologically correct. There are people who will alter things deliberately: you don’t pick up sea creatures from the middle of the shore and take them down to att ractive pools at the bottom of the shore without knowing you’re doing it.There can be a lot of ignorance in people’s behavior towards wild animals and it’s a problem that more and more people are going to wild places: while some animals may get used to cars, they won’t get used to people suddenly rushing up to them. The sheer pressure of people, coupled with the fact that there are increasingly few places where noone else has photographed, means that over the years, life has become much more difficult for the professional wildlife photographers.Nevertheless, wildlife photographers play a very important part in educating people about what is out there and what needs conserving. Although photography can be an enjoyable pastime, as it is to many people, it is also something that plays a very important part in educating young and old alike.11 The author decided to go to university and study zoology because _______________.A. she wanted to improve her life in the countrysideB. she was persuaded to do so by her grandmotherC. she was keen on the natural worldD. she wanted to stop moving around all the time12 How is the author different from some of the other wildlife photographers she meets?A. The first part has to do with how the teacher feels about students. The second part has to do with what the teacher does in the classroom. In traditional education, the teacher may feel that students are not very grown up. Usually, teachers are older than students, and teachers feel that students are young and do not know much about the world, and that he must make the students study specific things. In open education, the teacher’s feelings are very different. The teacher feels that the students are individuals first, and students second. He expects his students to be responsible for the things they do. Just as adults are. A student’s ideas and feelings are just as important as the teacher’s. The teacher allows his students to decide what they want to do, and does not make them study specific subjects or things. The teacher lets them decide what to study and how much tostudy. It’s very important for the teacher to show how he feels about the students. There are no traditional rules made by the teacher. Caffeine is a chemical substance that stimulates the nerves of the body. Drinking coffee tends to make people a little bit more awake---at least for a short time---because of this stimulating effect on the nervous system. A cup of coffee has, on the average, about 3% caffeine in it.One story of the discovery of the coffee plant relates to this effect of caffeine. According to the story, coffee was discovered in East Africa. The story says that coffee was first found by a goat farmer named Kaldi. This was about the year 850.Kaldi was leading his animals through the mountains and the goats were stopping repeatedly to eat the plants near the path. Suddenly, some of the goats started jumping up and down in a very strange way.Kaldi figured out that the goats were acting this way because of the plants they were eating.Kaldi himself tried eating some of the green beans that the goats had been eating. He, too, felt the stimulating effect of the beans.Kaldi wanted to prove what had happened, so he picked some of the beans and took them back to his home village, where he told his story. The green bean got the name “Kaffa” and later “coffee” because the beans were discovered in a place call ed Kaffa in Africa. Then for years, people used to eat a few of the green Kaffa beans when they were in themountains and needed extra energy or stimulation. It was later found that the coffee beans could be picked and then dried until they turned brown, and then they could be stored. If the beans were dried and stored, they could be used at any time.46. More than one half of them have died. But doctors say evidence also shows there is no reason for persons to become terrified by the disease. The AIDS virus is spread during sex with an infected partner, or by infected blood. But doctors say their studies show the disease is not spread through normal, close social activities.A study by one research team was printed in the New England Journal of Medicine. The doctors studied one-hundred-one family members who lived with AIDS and lived in crowded conditions. The family members shared many personal goods with the patients. These included toothbrushes, drinking glasses, beds, towels and toilets.Doctors said only one family member---a five-year-old girl---got the AIDS virus. They note, however, that the girl’s mother had the disease. They believe the girl probably was born with the virus. No other family member in the study got the AIDS virus or showed any signs of the disease. The head of the study, Gerald Friedland, said if the disease is not easily spread in crowded homes, it also will not spread easily in factories, offices, schools and other public places. Doctor Friedland said the study also shows there is no reason to punish AIDS patients and to force themto live separately from other persons.American health officials recently warned, however, that some health care workers should take special care. The report noted the AIDS virus is carried in blood and other body fluids. It said health care workers should put protective covers over their eyes and skin during medical operations, dental work, or other times when the patient may bleed. In the United States, most AIDS patients are homosexual people, people taking drugs, people who used infected needles, and persons who received infected blood. More recent studies show the AIDS virus also can be spread during heterosexual(异性的)relations. It can spread either from the man to the woman, or from the woman to the man.51. Doctors say there is no reason for people to be frightened about AIDS because_________ .A. it is not deadlyB. few people are infected with AIDSC. the AIDS virus is not spread in everyday social activitiesD. the AIDS virus is notspread during sex52. Persons who receive infected bloodC. People who are homosexualD. Unmarried people who don’t take drugs Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passageDo parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal. One of their chief duties is to give their children a sense of personal worth, for self-esteem isthe basis of a good mental health. A youngster who is often made to feel stupid, often compared to brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins, will not feel confident and become so afraid of failing, that he (or she) won't try at all. Of course, they should be corrected when they do wrong; this is the way children learn. But the criticisms should be balanced with praises.Parents owe their children firm guidance and consistent discipline. It is frightening for a youngster to feel that he is in charge of himself; it's like being in a car without brakes. The parent who says “No” when other parents say “Yes” sends a double message. He is also saying: “I love you, and I am ready to risk your anger, because I don't want you to get into trouble.”Parents owe their children a comfortable feeling about their body, and enough information about sex to balance the wrong information that they will surely receive from their friends.Parents owe their children privacy and respect for their personal things. This means not borrowing things without being permitted, not reading diaries and mail, not looking through pockets. If a mother feels that she must read her daughter's diary to know what is going on, the communication between them must be pretty bad.Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others: it means respecting elders, teachers, and the law. The best way to teach such values is by example. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees his parents steal tools from the factory or towels from a hotel will think that it is all right to steal. A youngster who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have a difficult time laughing and loving. No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something. And if you give him his due, he'll have something of value to pass along to your grandchildren.56. According to the passage, parents owe their children the following things Except _________ .A. privacyB. carsC. respect of selfD. information abouttheir body57. The writer thinks that teenagers are frightened when they are in charge of themselvesbecause_________ .A. they don't know how to stop a car without brakesB. there is no one to ask for helpwhen in troubleC. there is no one to guide and discipline themD. they are afraid of being left alone58. Parents are advised to show love to their children by_________ .A. saying “Yes” to everything the children ask for.B. refusing something to theirchildren.C. never embracing older children.D. never criticizing children.59. How to enjoy yourself at a party.Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:"Family" is of course an elastic(弹性的) word. But when British people say that their society is based on family life, they are thinking of "family" in its narrow, peculiarly European sense of mother, father, and children living together alone in their own house as an economic and social unit. Thus, every British marriage indicates the beginning of a new and independent family—hence the tremendous importance of marriage in British life. For both the man and the woman, marriage means leaving one's parents and starting one's own life. The man's first duty will then be to his wife, and the wife's to her husband. He will be entirely responsible for her financial support, and she for the running of the new home.Their children will be their common responsibility and theirs alone.Neither the wife's parents nor the husband's,nor their brothers or sisters, aunts or uncles, have any right to interfere with them—they are their own masters.Readers of novels like Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice will know that in former times marriage among wealthy families were arranged by the girl's parents, that is,it was the parents' duty to find a suitable husband for their daughter, preferably a rich one,and by skillful encouragement—lead him eventually to ask their permission to marry her.Until that time, the girl was protected and maintained in the parents' home and the financial relief(减轻) of getting rid of her could be seen in their giving the newly married pair a sum of money called a dowry(嫁妆).It is very different today. Most girls of today get a job when they leave school and become financially independent before their marriage. This has had two results.A girl chooses her own husband, and she gets no dowry.51.What does the author mean by "Family is of course an elastic word"?A.Different families have different ways of life.B.Different times produce different families.C.Different nations have different families.D.Different definitions could be given to the word.52.For an English family, the husband's duty is ______.A.financial while the wife's is running the homeB.defending the family which the wife's is running the homeC.supporting the family while the wife's is financialD.independent while the wife's is dependent53.Everything is decided in a British family ______.A. by the coupleB. with the help of their parentsC.by brothers and sistersD.with the help of aunts and uncles54. What is true concerning the book “Pride and Prejudice”?A. It is the best book on marriage.B. It is a handbook of marriage.C. It gives quite some idea of English social life in the past.D. It provides a lot of information of former-time wealthy families.55.With regard to marriage in Britain, present-day girls differ from former time girls in ____.A. the right to get marriedB. more parental supportC.finding a jobD. social positionQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:Praise is a powerful tool but many parents have misconceptions about what it does and how it works.Praise encourages motivation and confidence, but a surprising number of people think it's the cause of jealousy, laziness and resentment. What are the most common assumptions about praise?“There's no need to say anything.”If things are going well, you may think there's no need to say anything. This attitude can be summed u p as “if I don't say anything, then everything's OK”. What this really means is “I'll only say something when there is something to criticize”.“If I say 'well done', they'll stop trying.”Do you think that if you compliment your children they'll slack off? If we are praised for a job well done,it generally encourages us to do better, not worse. The disappointment we feel when good work is not recognized gives rise to the feeling “why should I bother if nobody notices?”“If I praise one, the others will be jealous.”If you are honest and fair in your praise and recognize the special talents of each child, they won't resent praise given to their siblings. Each will feel valued for the unique individuals they are. Children who feel good about themselves are usually generous in their praise of other people. Never use praise of one as a way of implicitly criticizing another. For example, “you'realways so cheerful...”with its implied message “... unlike your moody brother”.“What if there's nothing to praise?”There is always something to praise. You have to catch your child doing something right. Have a positive attitude to the things he does and remember the praise must always be genuine. Your child will quickly sense when you are lying.56. Many parents have misunderstandings aboutA. how powerful praise isB. what praise isC. what praise does and how it worksD. how to give genuine praises to their children57. Why do some parents consider it unnecessary to say anything to praise their children?A. Because they think things aren’t always going well.B. Because they don’t like to praise their children.C. Because they only think it necessary to say something when there is something to criticize.D. Because they don’t like to criticize their children.58. When you are praising one kid, you shouldA. praise other kids tooB. explain the kid’s special talentsC. tell others to be generous and not to be jealousD. make sure you don’t hurt another kid indirectly59. Children who ________ are usually generous in their praise of other people.A. feel good about themselvesB. feel bad about themselvesC. seldom receive praisesD. receive false praises60. The sixth is a muscular sense responsible for directing your muscles intelligently to the exact extent necessary for each action you perform. For example, when you reach for an object, the sensory nerves linking the muscles to the brain stop your hand at the correct spot. This automatic perception of the position of your muscles in relation to the object is your muscular sense in action.Muscles are stringly bundles of fibers varying from one five-thousandth of an inch to about three inches. They have three unique characteristics, they can become shorter and thicker; they can stretch; and they can retract to their original positions. Under a high-powered microscope, muscle tissue is seen as long, slender cells with a grainy texture like wood.More than half of a person's body is composed of muscle fibers, most of which are involuntary-in other words, work without conscious direction. The voluntary muscles, those that we move consciously to perform particular actions, number more than fivehundred. Women have only 60 to 70 percent as much muscle as men for their body mass. That is why an average woman can't lift as much, throw as far, or hit as hard as an average man.66. According to the selection, the muscular sense is responsible for ______.A. the efficiency of our musclesB. the normal breathing functionC. directing our muscles intelligentlyD. the work of only our involuntary muscles67. According to the selection more than half of a person's body is composed of ______.A. voluntary musclesB. involuntary musclesC. muscle fibersD. sensory nerves(3)The large part which war played in English affairs in the Middle-Ages, the fact that the control of the army and navy was in the hands of those that spoke French, and the circumstances that much of English fighting was done in France all resulted in the introduction into English of a number of French military terms. The art of war has undergone such changes since the battles of Hastings, Lewes, and Agincourt that many words once common are now only in historical use. Their places have been taken by later borrowings, often like wise from French, many of them being words acquired by the French in the course of their wars in Italy during the sixteenth century. Yet we still use French words of the Middle Ages when we speak of the army and the navy, of peace, enemy, battle, soldier, guard and spy, and we have kept the names of officers such as captain and sergeant. Some of the French terms were introduced into English because they were needed to express a new object or a new idea. In other cases a French and a native English word for the same thing existed side by side. Sometimes one or the otherhas since been lost from the language; but sometimes both the borrowed and the native word have been still in common use.71. The main idea of this passage is that ______.A. most of today's common English military terms dated from the sixteenth century or laterB. a study of the English vocabulary shows the important part which war has played in the history of EnglandC. many French words borrowed into English during the Middle Ages have since disappeared from the languageD. many military terms used in English were originally borrowed from French, some as early as the Middle Ages72. All of the following have something to do with the introduction into English of many French military terms except that _______.A. war played an important part in English affairs in the Middle AgesB. the English army and navy were controlled by those who spoke French in the war between England and FranceC. France invaded England in the Middle Ages and many battles were fought in EnglandD. much of English fighting was done in France in the war between England and France73. The art of war has undergone such changes that _______.A. we no longer use any French words of the Middle AgesB. many words once common are not used any longer and they are replaced by Italian wordsC. French military terms have disappeared from the English languageD. many words once common are now only in historical use and their places have been taken by the newly-borrowed words74. Which of the following is not the French word borrowed into English during the Middle Ages?A. sergeantB. battleC. spyD. fight75. The writer takes the words "battle" and "fight" as an example to show______.A. French words are needed to express something newB. a French and a native word for the same thing have been still in common use side by sideC. French word or the other has been lost from the English languageD. "battle" is the borrowed word and "fight" is the native one(4)"Fingers were made before forks" when a person gives up good manners, puts aside knife and fork, and dives into his food, someone is likely to repeat that saying. The fork was an ancient agricultural tool, but for centuries no one thought of eating with it. Not until the eleventh century, when a young lady from Constantinople brought her fork to Italy, did the custom reach Europe.By the fifteenth century the use of the fork was widespread in Italy. The English explanation was that Italians were averse to eating food touched with fingers, "Seeing all men's fingers are not alike clean." English travellers kept their friends in stitches while describing this ridiculous Italian custom.Anyone who used a fork to eat with was laughed at in England for the next hundred years. Men who used forks were thought to be sissies, and women who used them were called show-offs and overnice. Not until the late 1600's did using a fork become a common custom.76. The custom of eating with a fork was _______.A. brought to Europe from AmericaB. begun when forks were inventedC. brought to Europe from AsiaD. invented by Italians77. 2009年福建专升本英语作文题目

2009年福建专升本英语作文题目My Awesome School LifeHi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 10 years old. I'm in the 5th grade at Sunshine Elementary School here in Fuzhou. I love my school so much and I want to tell you all about the totally awesome life I have there!First off, our school building is so cool. It's this big white building with a red roof and it has these really pretty flower gardens out front. When you walk in the front doors, there's a huge lobby with high ceilings and big windows that let in lots of natural light. The floors are shiny and clean. Off the lobby are the principal's office, the teachers' lounge, the nurse's room, and the cafeteria where we eat lunch every day.The cafeteria food is actually pretty good for school food! They have different choices like fried rice, noodles, vegetables, meat dishes, and even pizza on Fridays which is my favorite. And they always have fresh fruit too. For snacks and drinks they sell yogurt, milk boxes, and little bags of nuts or crackers and stuff. It's affordable for our parents which is nice.Upstairs are all the classrooms. My classroom is room 205 on the second floor. It's a good size with lots of windows so it'sbright and cheery. We have individual desks and chairs, plus a big chalkboard at the front. Our teacher Ms. Wang is really nice - she's young and has a great sense of humor. She makes learning fun!We learn so many interesting things like math, Chinese, science, history, art, music, PE and of course English. English is one of my favorite classes because I'm determined to become fluent. It will be so useful when I'm older. In English class we practice conversing, do fun activities like games and songs, and learn vocabulary and grammar. Sometimes we even get to watch movies or TV shows in English which is awesome. At recess and lunch we get to go out to the playground and run around. Our playground is massive! It has basketball courts, a soccer field, tetherball courts, a running track, and my favorite - THE JUNGLE GYM! It's this epic triple-decker playground with lots of tubes, tunnels, bridges, monkey bars, swings and slides. All my friends and I love climbing around on it and seeing who can go the highest. We get so sweaty but we have so much fun. After school, I'm part of the Science Club where we get to do cool experiments. Last week we made balloon rocket cars! We also have art clubs, dance teams, orchestra and more. Orsometimes I just stay and play basketball or soccer with my friends until my parents come pick me up.On top of normal school, we also get to go on amazing field trips! Once we went to the Fuzhou Nature Reserve and got to go hiking and learn about the local plants and animals. Another time we visited the Fuzhou Museum and saw ancient artifacts from the area. We even got to try hands-on activities like making traditional Chinese crafts. Field trips are the best!I have the most wonderful friends at my school too. My best friends are Xiaoyu, Jingfei and Minmin. We've all been friends since 1st grade. At lunch we always sit together and trade food - I give Jingfei some of my fried rice if she gives me a few of her dumplings. At recess we play endless games of double-dutch, four square, and would you rather. After school sometimes we go to each other's houses to play videogames or just hang out. We always have a blast together!Even though school can be hard work sometimes with tests, homework and having to wake up early, I honestly look forward to going every day. I treasure my time at Sunshine Elementary because I'm learning so much, getting exercise and socialization, being creative and expressing myself, and making wonderful memories. These really are the best days of my life so far!Well, that's my awesome school life in a nutshell! I feel so lucky and I wish all kids could experience an incredible place like Sunshine Elementary. It's shaped me into who I am today - a curious, well-rounded, hardworking and joyful young person.I've got a bright future ahead thanks to my terrific school. Thanks for reading my essay! Let me know if you have any other questions.。

And,without knowing the details, they expect differences in customs.Customs are the behaviors that are generally expected in specific situations.American men,for example, shake hands with each other when first introduced while Japanese men bow.36.When introduced to the Japanese businessman, the American businessman put Out his right hand because____.A.he felt a little bit nervousB.he wanted to express his discomfortC.he felt a little offended by the Japanese manD.he wanted to shake hands with the Japanese man37.The two businessmen behaved differently because____.A.they followed their own greeting customsB.they were not used to the strange atmosphereC.they couldn’t speak each other’ S languageD.they had never met each other before38.Paragraph 4 tells us that when visiting a foreign country,____.A.it is very uncommon for one to encounter embarrassing situationsB.it is hard for one to adapt to the material aspects of life thereC.people often expect to meet differences in customsD.people expect the same kind of food and weather39.This passage is mainly about____.A.cultural invasion B.the understanding of customsC.business talks D.differences in handshakesPassage TwoMr..Leonard,the principal of the Bedford Academy High School in Bedford-Stuyvesant,Brooklyn,is a man of many solutions, many of them creative, many of them, apparently, also effective. In New York City, only about 50 percent of students manage to graduate in four years. At Bedford Academy 63 percent of the students qualify for free lunch,a majority of which are being raised by a single mother and another significant number are being raised by someone other than a parent.Yet close to 95 percent of students graduate, and actually every one of those goes on to college.Mr..Leonard does not achieve those results by admitting only high-testing students into his school.Of the students arriving with lower test scores,Mr..Leonard says that he is not looking for the students with the highest grades,or even the best behavior. He’ S looking for the ones who understand his basic mission of discipline and respect, and are willing to devote themselves to his regular training course. The Bedford Academy High School is famous for its autonomy. For Mr..Leonard,autonomy means insisting that all entering students spend their Saturday mornings in preparatory classes the summer before they enroll.Autonomy also means an automatic weeklong suspension for any student who “disrespects a f emale,”said Mr..Leonard.It means requiring struggling students,in the weeks before the Regents exams,to attend studying sessions on Saturday from 9 a.m.until 9 p.m.It means the most senior, experienced teachers, including Mr..Leonard,teach not the school’s academic jewels, but the most struggling students. And autonomy also means the school’ S teachers administer almost no homework.Instead they emphasize after-school tutoring where the teachers Can keep a better eye on whether the student isactually grasping the material.40.In Mr..Leonard’s school, most other students who don’t have to pay for lunch____.A.are adopted children B.are parentlessC.are homeless D.have a single parent41.What can be a good indication of the Bedford S chool’ s success?A.63 percent of its students go on to college.B.A high percentage of students enjoy free lunch.C.All the graduates from the school go on to college.D.The number of its graduates is twice that of New York High School42.What does Mr..Leonard expect from those low-testing students?A.The highest scores.B.The best behavior.C.Respectfulness and discipline.D.Willingness to learn by themselves.43.The school insists that students should____.A.leave the school if they fail to respect a womanB.attend the preparatory classes in the summer before enrollingC.do their homework to review what they have learnedD.come to the school on SundaysPassage ThreePeople joke that no one in Los Angeles reads;everyone watches TV, rents videos,or goes to the movies. The most popular reading material is comic books, movie magazines, and TV guide s.City libraries have only 10 percent of the traffic that car washes have. But how do you explain this? An annual book festival in west Los Angeles is flourishing year after year.People wait half an hour for a parking space to become available. This outdoor festival, sponsored by a newspaper, occurs every April for one weekend. This year’ s attendance was estimated at 70,000 on Saturday and 75,000 on Sunday. The festival consisted of 280 exhibitors. There were about 90 talks given by authors, with an audience question-and-answer period following each talk.Autograph(亲笔签名)seekers sought out more than 150 authors. A food court sold all kinds of popular food and diverse foreign foods, from American hamburgers to Hawaiian shave ice drinks.Except for a $7 parking fee,the festival was free.Even so,some people avoided the food court prices by staying away and having their ownsandwiches and drinks.People came from all over California. One couple drove down from San Francisco.“This is our sixth year here now.We love it,”said the husband.“It’s just fantastic to be in the great outdoors,to be among so many books and authors, and to get some very good deals, too.”The idea for the festival occurred years ago,but nobody knew if it would succeed.Although book festivals were already popular in other US cities, would Los Angeles residents welcome one? “The citizens of the city are very unpredictable,”said one of the festival founders.44.The underlined sentence in the first paragraph implies that____.A.city libraries have a very limited number of readersB.only a small proportion of the readers go to libraries by carC.city libraries provide fewer places for Car washesD.city libraries have fewer parking places45.The outdoor book festival attracts____.A.autograph seekers and authors onlyB.people with different interestsC.people who love Los AngelesD.people who like cooking46.At the very beginning, people were____ about the idea for the book festival in Los Angeles.A.confident B.pessimisticC.uncertain D.indifferent47.The success of Los Angeles book festival shows that____.A.book reading is still popular in Los AngelesB.Los Angeles people prefer library to book festivalC.people attend the book festivals for fun not for readingD.libraries should have food courts to attract more readersPassage FourHave you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly? Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it? Are you afraid to ask someone for a date? Many people are afraid to assert themselves(坚持己见).Dr.Robert Alberti, author of StandUp, Speak Out,and Talk Back, thinks it’s because of their lack of confidence.“Our structure of organization tends to make people distrust themselves.”says Alberti.“There’s always a‘superior’around-a parent,a teacher,a boss- who ‘knows better’.These ‘superiors’ often gain when they keep breaking at your self-image.”But Alberti and other scientists are doing something to help people assert themselves. They offer “assertiveness training” courses-AT for short. In the AT course people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so.They learn to be aggressive without hurting people. In one way, learning to speak out is to overcome fear.A group taking an AT course will help the shy person to lose his fear. But AT uses an even stronger motive-the need to share. The shy person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels.Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-image.If someone you face is more “important”than you,you may feel less of a person. You start to doubt your own good sense. You go b y the other person’ s label. But,why should you? AT says you can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do,you can learn to speak out.48.People are reluctant to talk back because____.A.they have a poor self-imageB.they have not received AT coursesC.they have not grasped communication skillsD.they are not generous enough to share things49.According to Dr.Alberti, our organization is constructed to____.A.get people to trust their own solutions to problemsB.keep people as knowledgeable as their “superiors”C.train people’ s capacity to speak up for their rightsD.make things more favorable for “superiors”50.One of the objectives of AT courses is to____.A.train people to trust othersB.encourage people to share their thoughtsC.tell people of their right to be “superiors”D.help people overcome their fear of asserting themselves51.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.Protect Yourself B.Try to Speak OutC.Share Your Opinion D.Face Your SuperiorPassage FiveA wind tunnel is used for testing planes or plane models. In a wind tunnel air is blown over a plane ora model placed in a test section.Wind tunnel test sections are different in size depending on airflow speed requirements. Some low-speed tunnels have test sections large enough for a complete small plane. In the very high speed tunnels used for space testing, however, the model may be as small as a pencil. There are two ways of feeding air to the test section. In the constant flow tunnel, airflow produced by electric fans is forced through the tunnel to the test section, then through another tunnel section back to the starting point for reuse. The other way involves storing high-pressure air in a box, sending it out by a controlling device to pass through the tunnel and test section into another box. This way is usually used for a very short period of high-speed airflow.Wind tunnels are usually used to test planes before they are flown.Problems in a plane carl be found when it meets the high-speed airflow in the tunnel. For example,if the wings are built so that they would weaken at high speeds, this fact can be discovered in the tunnel, thus saving many lives and millions of dollars. In a wind tunnel, scientists also find out how different planes will act at different speeds. They find out such things as how the air dives by the wing surfaces, how slowly a plane can fly before it starts to drop, and how fast can climb.52.Some wind tunnel sections are larger than others because____.A.they are used for large planes B.they can produce a stronger windC.they are built to conduct a high-speed test D.the air in them flows at a lower speed 53.The underlined words “this fact” in Paragraph 3 refer to the fact that____.A.it costs a lot to test a planeB.the wings are not good enoughC.some problems are found with a planeD.the wings meet the high-speed air flow in the tunnel54.As mentioned in the last paragraph,a wind tunnel can be used to find out____.A.how fast a plane can rise B.how smooth a plane’s surface isC.how a plane lands in a strong wind D.how a plane drops at a low height55.What can we learn from the passage?A.It is very expensive to build a wind tunnel.B.Wind tunnels are very essential in testing planes.C.Scientists still have a lot to learn about wind tunnels.D.There are new ways to feed air to the test section.V.Daily Conversation (15 points)Directions:Pick out appropriate expressions from the eight choices below and complete the following dialogues by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.A.I miss you,too B.It’ a niceC.Oh,come on D.for the worldE.Sounds as if F.in the worldG.To tell you the truth H.I can’ t waitJohn:Hi,Kim.I haven’t seen you for ages. How are you?Kim:I’m fine.thanks.I moved house recently, so I’ve been very busy.John:56____ you need a rest! There are no traditional rules made by the teacher. The only rules in an open classroom are rules for everyone' s safety. The students are allowed to discover subjects in the open classroom, instead of being made to study them. The author regards open education as _______.A. more reliableB. complexC. modernD. unusualQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:When 23-year-old Eric graduated from college last year, he didn’t have a job. Because in the US, health insurance is provided through employer, most temps are not entitled to workplace health benefits. Eric took a short-term job mainly because _______.A. he didn’t want to give up his apartmentB. he liked to try out different companiesC. he wanted to get more experienceD. a short-term job is easier to do57. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one shelf to another, to and fro, often slowing down her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. In open education, the teacher allows the students to choose what to do. They maystudy, or talk, or do nothing at all if they want.69.
