Whetherthere’safterlife,theawerhasneverbeenthesame.Theatheistsdenyafterlife,believingthatourlifeisnomorethanf romthecradletothegrave.Theymaycareabouttheirillustriousnamesafterdeath;theymayfeelattachedtot heaffectionoftheiroffring,buttheyneverlaytheirhopesontheirafterlife.Theymayalsosaythatgoodwillb erewardedwithgood,andevilwithevil,buttheydon’treallybelieveanyretributionintheirafterlife.However,inthereligiousworldoramongthesuperstitiousp eople,thebeliefinafterlifeisverypopular.Theydonotonlybelieveinafterlife,butthousandsofreincarnati oaswell.Inthemysteriousworld,therearetheparadiseandthehell,thecelestialbeingsandthegods,theBud dhaandtheBodhisattvas.
Maybetheyreallybelievedit,ormaybetheyjustwantedtomakeuseofpeople’sveneration,theancientemperorsalwaysdeclaredthattheyweretherealdrago,thesoofGod,whiletheroya lministersclaimedtobethereincarnatioofvariouscotellatio.Butcanthestarsreincarnate? Manypeopleburninceeandkowtow,dogooddeedsandstriveforvirtues,notjustforthepresent,butmainlyt oletGodseetheirsinceritysoastoberebornintoabetterafterlife,ortoachievethehighestenlightenmentafte rseverallivesofpractice.Theydobelieveinafterlife.ButIcan’thelpasking:Suosetherewerenoafterlife,wouldyoustilldogooddeedsandstriveforvirtues?AndIfGoddo esnotseewhatyouaredoing,wouldyoustillbesouprightandselfle?Ifyouwork,notforservingthepublican dliberatingtheothers,butjustforabetterafterlifeofyourown,i’titalittletooselfish?Comparingwiththiskindofbelievers,thosewhodon’tbelieveinafterlife,butstillkeepdoinggooddeeds,arethemostsincereandhonestphilanthropists,because theydothemnotforthemselvesbutforother.
YoumaywonderifIbelieveinafterlife.Myaweris:Iknownothingaboutmypreviouslife,soIdarenotmakei mpropercommentsonafterlife.ButIdohopethere’safterlife!Becauseourpresentlifeissoshortthatsomanythingsslipawaybeforeourproperunderstanding. Ihavesomanydreams,somanywishes,somanyambitio,aswellassomanyregretsandconcer.Iftherewere noafterlife,allofthemwillremainunrealized!
