新概念英语第三册第32课:A lost shipLesson 32 A lost ship一艘沉船 Listen to the tape then answer the question below.听录音,然后回答以下问题。

Did the crew of the Elkor find what they were looking for? Why?The salvage operation had been a complete failure. The small ship, Elkor, which had been searching the Barents Sea for weeks, was on its way home.A radio message from the mainland had been received by the ship's captain instructing him to give up the search. The captain knew that another attempt would be made later, for the sunken ship he was trying to find had been carrying a precious cargo of gold bullion.Despite the message, the captain of the Elkor decided to try once more. The sea bed was scoured with powerful nets and there was tremendous excitement on board went a chest was raised from the bottom. Though the crew were at first under the impression that the lost ship had been found, the contents of the chest proved them wrong. What they had in fact found was a ship which had been sunk many years before. The chest contained the personal belongings of a seaman, Alan Fielding. There were books, clothing and photographs, together with letters which the seaman had once received from his wife. The captain of the Elkor ordered his men to salvage as much as possible from the wreck. Nothing of value was found, but the numerous items which were brought to the surface proved to be of great interest. From a heavy gun that was raised, the captain realized that the ship must have been a cruiser. In another chest, which contained the belongings of a ship's officer, there was an unfinished letter which had been written on March 14th, 1943. The captain learnt from the letter that the name of the lost ship was the Karen. Themost valuable find of all was the ship's log book, parts of which it was still possible to read. From this the captain was able to piece together all the information that had come to light. The Karen had been sailing in a convoy to Russia when she was torpedoed by an enemy submarine. This was later confirmed by naval official at the Ministry of Defiance after the Elkor had returned home. All the items that were found were sent to the War Museum.参考译文打捞工作彻底失败了。

新概念三32课课文Lesson 32 The first well-paid jobTom had been looking for work for a long time. He was very grateful when he was accepted as an assistant in a big company. He was not very happy with his salary. One day he worked with a kind and friendly man called Mr. Ford. Mr. Ford was a hard-working man who never wasted a minute. Tom was very impressed with him.Mr. Ford told Tom that he had started as an ordinary worker, but that he had soon begun to make his way to the top. A clever man had helped him a great deal.'Who was that?' Tom asked. 'Who helped you?''Well, I helped myself to begin with,' Mr. Ford said with a smile. 'Then one day I got a fine piece of advice from a rich customer. He told me never to look at my watch because if I did, my work would seem to go very slowly. After that, I never looked at it again.''But how did that piece of advice help you?' Tom asked. 'Why was it so important?''Well,' said Mr. Ford, when I came to work in the morning, I looked at the clock on the wall. I knew exactly what the time was, and I began to work. In the past, I often watched the clock. It's funny how time can go slowly when you are working, isn't it?''Yes, it certainly is,' Tom agreed.'But you never looked at the clock,' Tom said. 'So how could you tell the time?''I didn't need to know the time at all,' Mr. Ford replied. 'All I needed to know was how quickly time seemed to be passing. I was paid a very low wage in those days and the slower time went, the less work I did. Of course, my work was often criticized. Peoplesometimes told me that I was lazy. As time went on, however, I was given more and more money because my work was always finished before everyone else's.'。
