高考英语时事热点话题阅读热点18 交通强国与交通发展治理一、阅读理解1Urban Transportation in CanadaPublic transportation & Transit passesAll cities and most major towns in Canada have a public transportation system with one or more modes of transportation (bus, subway, train, etc.). The bus is the most common form of urban transportation in Canada. To use public transportation, you must purchase a ticket or a transit pass. Transit passes allow you unlimited use of public transportation for a specific period (one month or more). They are usually cheaper than buying many tickets if you plan to use public transportation often.Transportation for people with disabilitiesPublic transportation often has features to assist people with disabilities. In many cities and towns, there are also transportation services available specifically for people with limited mobility, such as specially equipped buses. You can find out about these services in the same way you would learn more about other public transportation options.Etiquette on public transportationWhen taking public transportation such as a bus or train, it is important to understand the unspoken rules of conduct in the shared space. Here are a few things to note:◆Be polite and respectful to others around you. For example, maintain an appropriate noise level when talking or making a phone call.◆If you are carrying a backpack or a large shoulder bag in a crowded public transit vehicle, keep it close to you, preferably at your feet to avoid hitting people with it as you walk by.◆Avoid pushing or touching others in order to make more room for yourself. Sometimes public transit can become very crowded, but it is important to keep calm and give others appropriate personal space.◆Have your proof of payment accessible in case you are asked to show it.1. What is the advantages of using transit passes over buying tickets?A. Lower costs.B. Safer trips.C. Longer service hours.D. More use of transport.2. How does the transportation system help people with disabilities?A. By offering fewer transportation options.B. By running special transport services.C. By limiting their mobility on city buses.D. By providing free rides in towns and cities.3. What is considered impolite on public transportation?A. Lowering your speaking voice.B. Placing backpacks at your feet.C. Having your proof of payment at hand.D. Staying close to other passengers.2William Phelps Eno (1858 - 1945 ) was an internationally recognized pioneer in traffic control and regulation. Named the "Father of Traffic Safety," 'Eno developed the first traffic plans for major cities including New York, London, and Paris, and is credited with helping to invent and popularize stop signs, taxi stands, pedestrian safety islands, and other traffic features commonly used throughout the world.Eno started out in his family's real estate business, but his interest in transportation led him to concentrate his spare time on traffic reform. In 1899, at the age of 40, he left real estate behind and devoted the rest of his life to put his concepts for orderly transportation into practice. His "Rules of the Road," adopted by New York City in 1909, became the world's first city traffic plan. He also wrote the first-ever manual of police traffic regulations.Eno gradually embraced multimodal transportation interests. He developed a plan for subways in New York City long before anyone else seriously considered the concept. He also became interested in maritime activities, supported railroad development, and started research in the 1920s on the future impact of avidtion(航空).Eno died in 1945 at the age of 86. Ironically, he never drove a car during his lifetime. The Father of Traffic Safety,an enthusiastic horseback rider, distrusted automobiles. In 1921, William P. Eno created a corporation whose purpose was to continue his lifetime's work—the promotion of safety on roads and highways. He sponsored the Foundation and began the work of attracting other transportation experts and specialists in order to provide a forum for unbiased discussions that would lead to improvements in the movement of people and goods.Since 1921, the Foundation has undergone many changes. What began as a Foundation for Highway Traffic Regulation has now become an independent, non-profit think tank that works in federal transportation policy and transportation leadership development. What has not changed is Eno's constant presence in the world oftransportation.4. For what is William Phelps Eno well-known to the whole world ?A. His pioneering work in ensuring traffic safety.B. His design of all traffic signs.C. His research over the diversity of transportation.D. His contribution in inventing cars.5. When was the first city traffic plan launched?A. In 1909.B. In 1921.C. In 1945.D. In 1899.6. Which of the following can best replace "ironically" in the fourth paragraph?A. Humorously.B. Simply.C. Unexpectedly.D. Fortunately.7. What role does the Foundation created by William play now?A. Promoting improvements in federal transportation.B. Sponsoring the poor who don't have cars.C. Hosting international forums for experts and specialists.D. Maintaining safety on roads and highways.3When my brother and I were young, my mom would take us on Transportation Days.It goes like this: You can’t take any means of transportation more than once. We would start from home, walking two blocks to the rail station. We’d take the train into the city center, then a bus, switching to the tram, then maybe a taxi. We always considered taking a horse carriage in the historic di strict, but we didn’t like the way the horses were treated, so we never did. At the end of the day, we took the subway to our closest station, where Mom’s friend was waiting to give us a ride home—our first car ride of the day.The good thing about Transportation Days is not only that Mom taught us how to get around. She was born to be multimodal (多方式的). She understood that depending on cars only was a failure of imagination and, above all, a failure of confidence—the product of a childhood not spent exploring subway tunnels.Once you learn the route map and step with certainty over the gap between the train and the platform, nothing is frightening anymore. New cities are just light-rail lines to be explored. And your personal car, if you have one, becomes just one more tool in the toolbox—and often an inadequate one, limiting both your mobility and your wallet. On Transportation Days, we might stop for lunch on Chestnut Street or buy a new book or toy, but the transportation was the point. First, it was exciting enough to watch the world speed by from the train window. As Igot older, my mom helped me unlock the mysteries that would otherwise have paralyzed my first attempts to do it myself: How do I know where to get off? How do I know how much it costs? How do I know when I need tickets, and where to get them? What track, what line, which direction, where’s the stop, and will I get wet when we go under the river?I’m writing this right now on an airplane, a means we didn’t try on our Transportation Days and, we now know, the dirtiest and most polluting of them all. My flight routed me through Philadelphia. My multimodal mom met me for dinner in the airport. She took a train to meet me.8. Which was forbidden by Mom on Transportation Days?A. Havinga car ride.B. Taking the train twice.C. Buying more than one toy.D. Touring the historic district.9. According to the writer, what was the greatest benefit of her Transportation Days?A. Building confidence in herself.B. Reducing her use of private cars.C. Developing her sense of direction.D. Giving her knowledge about vehicles.10. Which means of transportation does the writer probably disapprove of (不赞成)?A. Airplane.B. Subway.C. Tram.D. Car.4Transportation shapes the world: along with communications, it forms a global net that connects person to person, city to city, and country to country. Transportation routes as well as vehicles are vital to the functioning and spread of every civilization.A country’s economy depends on reliable transportation. Citie s spread out along roads, rivers, and rails, so does information. Until the 20th century, these routes were confined to land or water. With the invention of powered flight, the air became an open road as well. The earliest way of traveling was undoubtedly by foot, and humans’ earliest means of transporting goods was carrying loads on their back or head. By 4000 B. C. , people were using domesticated animals for transport, a method greatly improved in some parts of the world by the invention of the wheel, probably first developed around 3500 B. C. .Until the 19th century, animals were the engines of land transportation. But with the invention of the steam engine and the internal combustion engine, railroads and automobiles revolutionized travel and trade. More than600 million cars and trucks travel the world today.Water has always been a fast and efficient mode of travel, and even today it remains a primary mover of heavy goods. The importance of waterways to human civilization can be seen on any map: almost all of the world’s major cities are located on coastlines or rivers. As early as 7000 B. C. , people were building canoes; long-distance ships were common by 3000 B. C. Until the 1950s, ships were the chief means of overseas passenger travel.Although the Montgolfier brothers took flight in balloons in the 18th century, air travel was not practical until the invention of powered flight by the Wright brothers in 1903. Within ten years, the commercial air transportation business had begun.Since the 20th century, high-speed rail has become another convenient way of travel. Today, two-thirds of the world’s high-speed rail track is in China, which measures nearly 30,000 kms, and this is expected to reach 38,000 kms by 2025.11. What is the passage mainly about?A. Technological advancements in transport over time.B. The influence of economic activities on transportation.C. The relationship between transportation and information flows.D. Reasons why land and sea transportation routes were important.12. Why does the writer mention the location of the world’s major cities?A. To encourage more people to move to big cities.B. To explain why boats and ships continue to be irreplaceable.C. To recommend water as a convenient and cheap form of transportation.D. To emphasize the contribution of water transport to human development.13. What can we learn about air travel?A. Balloons used to be one popular way of air travel.B. The Montgolfier brothers invented powered flight.C. The invention of airplanes helped popularize air travel.D. Air travel became widespread soon after the balloon was invented.14. What is the total length of high-speed rail track in the world today?A. About 57,000 kms.B. About 45,000 kms.C. About 38,000 kms.D. About 30,000 kms.5Traveling by bicycle is a very popular means of transportation throughout China. China has a huge population, and it is said that there is at least one bicycle for every two people within the company. Of course, many people in China ride bicycles pure ly for sport or exercise, but it’s also a much more commonly accepted means of everyday transportation, as compared to countries such as the United States. If you are living for a long period of time in China, chances are you will want to purchase your own bicycle so that you can use it whenever you want for transportation or just for the enjoyment of riding. Even if you don’t use a bicycle for everyday transportation, owning one can be a great way of enjoying some of the trails in the rural areas, just for fun. However, if you are just visiting China, renting a bicycle can be a more convenient choice. It is important to choose the correct bicycle for your use. You’ll find that in China, the one-speed style of bicycle is extremely popular. These bicycles are great if you want to ride around in the city to see the sights. They are quite comfortable and easy to ride. You can often rent a bicycle for an entire day for around $15.However, if you wish to ride on some of the rural paths, a mountain bike style would be a better choice. They are great for different kinds of road surfaces, providing for a safer ride. If you are planning to have a desire to tour and still be able to carry packages with you, then a touring bike would be the best choice. These are generally the most expensive to rent, but are extremely handy for carrying packages and even some of your luggage along with you.15. The opening paragraph probably tells us that .A. riding bicycle is very popular to Chinese peopleB. Chinese people use bicycles only for transportationC. Americans use bicycles only for sport and exerciseD. Riding bicycles is the main means of transportation16. If you are traveling in Beijin g you’d better .A. buy a bikeB. borrow a bikeC. steal a bikeD. rent a bike17. Which of the following is the advantage of the one-speed bicycle?A. It’s worth at least 15 dollarsB. You can’t ride it in the countryside.C. It is easy for you to travel in the cityD. You have to return it the next day.18. You would like to own a touring bike probably because .A. you have to ride on the road in the countrysideB. you have some packages to carry while travelingC. you want to enjoy the sights in the big citiesD. it is suitable for all kinds of road surfaces6Americans drove more miles in 2015 than any year since the U.S. government started keeping records 45 years ago. The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDT) recently reported that Americans drove a record of 3.148 trillion miles last year. In case you are wondering, that is enough to take 337 round trips from Earth to Pluto. There are a number of reasons why Americans are driving more miles. The social experts agree that the first is the price of gas, which has dropped to the level of the year 2004 in the past year. The American Automobile Association (AAA) said that the average price of gas was just $1.71 a gallon. That could be the lowest price since 2004.P.J. Sriraj, a director of the Urban Transportation Center at the University of Chicago, notes that the lower cost to fill up a car is just one reason. Another reason is that more Americans are back to work after the 2008 economic recession, and they drive to their jobs.Besides, more Americans have to travel a long distance every day between home and the office. There are a lot of Americans who must travel more than 45 miles per day for their jobs. And as for many, there is not enough public transportation.Because of the heavy traffic, roads are becoming more and more crowded. While modern cars are more fuel-efficient, the improvement is not enough to offset more cars on the road. “There is no doubt that driving more will make the air dirtier,” said P.J. Sriraj. And many Americans showed a great conce rn in a recent survey.19. The USDT report shows that in 2015 ________.A. Americans drove record-breaking milesB. Americans drove 3.148 trillion miles a dayC. Travel to Pluto was popular with AmericansD. The government began to record driving miles20. P.J. Sriraj thinks the reason why Americans drove more miles is ________.A. the low prices of gas and carsB. the 2008 economic depressionC. the Urban Transportation CenterD. more people’s coming back to work21. What makes many Americans worried?A. Having to drive far to work.B. Having no public transportation.C. Too many cars’ poll ution of the air.D. Small improvement of modern cars.22. How is the whole passage developed?A. By explaining causes.B. By giving examples.C. By following time order.D. By making comparison.7The possibility of self-driving robot cars has often seeme d like a futurist’s dream, years away from coming into reality in the real world. Well, the future is apparently now. The California Department of Motor Vehicles began giving permits in April for companies to test truly self-driving cars on public roads. The state also cleared the way for companies to sell or rent out self-driving cars, and for companies to operate driverless taxi services. California, it should be noted, isn't leading the way here. Companies have been testing their cars in cities across the country. It's hard to predict when driverless cars will be everywhere on our roads. But however long it takes, the technology may change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is managed. While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars, policymakers should be talking more about how self-driving cars can help reduce traffic jams, cut emissions(排放)and offer more convenient and affordable choices to move around. The arrival of driverless cars is a chance to make sure that those cars are environmentally friendly and more shared.Do we want to copy or even worsen the traffic of today with driverless cars? Imagine a future where most adults own their self-driving cars. They accept long, slow journeys to and from work on crowded highways because they can work, entertain themselves or sleep on the ride. They take their driverless car to a date and set the empty car to circle the building to avoid paying for parking. Instead of walking a few blocks to pick up a child or the dry cleaning, they send the self-driving minibus. The convenience even leads fewer people to take public transport —an unwelcome side effect researchers have already found in ride-hailing(网约车)services. Policymakers shouldstart thinking now about how to make sure the appearance of driverless cars doesn't worsen the transportation system we have today. The coming technological development presents a chance for cities and states to develop transportation systems designed to move more people, and more affordably. The car of the future is coming. We just have to plan for it.23. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. Self-driving cars are not allowed in the real world.B. Driverless taxies will be seen everywhere on the road in a short term.C. California is not alone in testing driverless cars.D. Self-driving technology will definitely benefit transportation system.24. According to the author, policymakers should pay more attention to __________.A. how driverless cars can help deal with transportation-related problemsB. how driverless cars can travel safelyC. how driverless cars can travel fasterD. how driverless cars can move more people25. What is a possible side effect of self-driving cars?A. Journeys to and from work become longer.B. More and more people abandon public transportation.C. There is no place to park them.D. They may result in traffic jams.26. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Preparing Cities for Robot CarsB. Future Technology UnderwayC. Transportation System in the FutureD. Robot Cars on the Road8“Choo, Choo!” Here comes the Chunnel train. Get aboard if you want to learn more about this un derground transportation system. This is an unusual form of transportation, because it is a tunnel that trains travel through and not an actual form of transportation. The Chunnel is actually the English nickname for the Channel Tunnel. In French, it is called le tunnel sous la Manche. It is a rail tunnel beneath the English Channel at the Straits of Dover. It connects Cheriton in Kent, England with Sangatte in northern France. It is the second longest rail tunnel in the world.Did you know that the British and the French had a race whi1e they were building the Chunnel? The race was to see who could get to the middle of the tunnel first. The British won by a little bit. It took 15,000 workers over seven years to dig the tunnel. The tunnel was finished in 1994.The completed Chunnel cost about $ 21 billion. But it all paid off, because it became very popular, very quick. Millions of people use it. Now it is getting even more popular. There are three complete tunnels in the Chunnel. The two outside ones are the passenger trains. The small inner one is a guidance train. The guidance train is not used for transportation. Each track is exactly parallel to each other. There are four different train systems in the Chunnel. The Eurostar is a high speed passenger service that connects London, Paris, Brussels, and Lille. The Eurotunnel shuttle is a rail ferry service. These shuttles carry cars. These are railcars that allow drivers to drive their vehicles on and off. There are also two Eurotunnel goods service trains. Now you know more about the Chunnel. Everybody off, this is the last stop.27. The Channel Tunnel links ______ with _______.A. Dover; KentB. London; ParisC. Lille; BrusselsD. Cheriton; Sangatte28. Which of the following shows the structure of the tunnels in the Chunnel?A. B.C. D.29. The Eurotunnel shuttle is intended to carry _________.A. passengersB. drivers and their vehiclesC. goodsD. staff members of the Chunnel30. But when their final 31 isn’t near a bus stop or subway station, those folks have a problem. Transportation experts often 32 to this a s the “last mile” problem — finding a way to close the gap between public transportation stops and one’s destination. With the last mile problem in mind, the makers of the URB-E 33 a compact electric vehicle that weighs around 13 kilograms. Unlike bi kes, which often don’t fit on crowded buses or trains, the URB-E collapses into a form 34 to carry-on luggage. And since the URB-E can be carried 35 anywhere, it’s not as vulnerable to thieves as bikes are.Depending on usage, the URB-E can travel for 32 kilometers on a single 36 , reaching a top speed of 24 kilometers per hour. For the price of a nice laptop, you could have an URB-E to drive to the office. The URB-E is made from aircraft-grade aluminum and comes in two basic models: the URB-E Commuter and the URB-E GP. The main 39 between the two is that the Commuter model has two rear wheels while the GP has only one. That means the Commuter offers greater stability, as 40 to the GP’s ability to make sharper turns like a bicycle. Both models come with accessories 41 LED front and rear lights and a shock-absorbing seat. 高考英语时事热点话题阅读热点07 新冠疫情相关的科研进展一、阅读理解1A doctor named Chepurnov from Siberia conducted a controversial coronavirus immunity test after surviving COVID-19 in March. The 68-year-old Russian doctor spent time with coronavirus-positive patients without wearing a mask to see if he could get a second COVID-19 infection. The doctor was infected a second time and experienced a worse COVID-19 case than he had previously. This unusual coronavirus immunity test can easily be filed under the “only in Russia” section of COVID-19 news. Only in Russia was a coronavirus vaccine approved for mass use before any scientific research was shared with the world an d before the drug cleared the Phase 3 trial. The story gets even crazier, considering the doctor’s age. At 68-years-old, Alexander Chepurnov happens to be the kind of COVID-19 patient most at risk of developing a severe case.Even so, Chepurnov’s controversial experiment isn’t without worth. It’s certainly the kind of experiment that others wouldn’t necessarily approve of, especially in western countries. But it’s the kind of experiment that can yield results — and Chepurnov did get his wish. He was reinfected with COVID- 19 within six months from the first bout. Chepurnov and his research team started to monitor his antibodies. He discovered that they vanished after three months. “The observation showed a fairly rapid decrease,” he told the paper. “By the e nd of the third month from the start of the disease, they ceased to be determined.” This falls in line with other stud ies about COVID-19 antibody life.Chepurnov’s story also seems to fall in line with other studies that say immunity can last for at least 5-7 months. The story also proves that immunity lasts even after the antibodies are gone and suggests that other immune system components are indeed involved in providing prolonged protection. Others theorized that T cells would extend immunity beyond the life of the first batch of antibodies. Chepurnov’s empirical findings are also important for vaccine research. If immunity lasts less than a year, more booster shots (加强针剂) might be needed after the initial doses. But Newsweek points out a problem with the experiment. Because his first case of COVID-19 hasn’t been diagnosed via a PCR test. Also, Chepurnov’s experiment hasn’t been published in a scientific journal, and it’sunclear what scientific rigors were applied. Still, if his findings are accurate, Chepurnov is actually right to warn against using a herd immunity approach to beat the pandemic.1. Why is Chepurnovs experiment considered controversial?A. Its not effective.B. Its too dangerous.C. Its disapproved of by Russia.D. Its not diagnosed via a PCR test.2. What does the underlined word "they" in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?A. diseasesB. virusesC. antibodiesD. results3. What is the finding of Chepurnovs experiment?A. COVID-19 immunity lasts permanently in ones body.B. The longevity of COVID-19 antibodies is about 3 months.C. Old patients are most at risk of developing a severe COVID-19.D. Vaccination can protect one from being infected with coronaviruses.4. Whats the main idea of the passage?A. Siberia is a unique place for treating COVID-19 patients.B. Newsweek found the evidence against herd immunity to COVID-19.C. Researches showed humans produce antibodies if infected with coronaviruses.D. A controversial experiment on coronavirus immunity was conducted in Russia.2Humans are no strangers to widespread viruses, and each time a vaccine(疫苗)is developed, it gives us hope for the future. Now, the world is waiting for a vaccine to fight COVID-19.Scientists worldwide have been rolling up their sleeves to work toward an effective novel coronavirus vaccine.Under the coordination(协调)of the World Health Organization (WHO),up to 172 countries have been engaging with the "largest and most diverse COVID-19 vaccine portfolio",a plan known as the COV AX Global Vaccines Facility.COV AX is a system for joint purchasing and balancing the risks of multiple vaccines. When a vaccine proves to be safe and effective, all countries within the facility will be able to access it, according to Xinhua. The plan is aimed to ensure that all countries, no matter their economic status, can get the vaccine in a timely manner when one is available. It also makes sure that prices will be kept as low as possible."A number of vaccines are now in the final stage of clinical trials," said WHO Director-General TedrosAdhanom Ghebreyesus on Aug 24,adding that the goal of COV AX is to deliver at least 2 billion doses of a vaccine by the end of 2021.According to the WHO, at present, nine potential vaccines are part of the portfolio. To guarantee the equal access and fair assignment of COVID-19 vaccines, the WHO has said that the world needs to prevent vaccine nationalism-countries putting their own interests ahead of others in trying to secure supplies of a possible vaccine."Vaccine nationalism only helps the virus,"Tedros said, warning that it would lead to a prolonged pandemic(疫情)if only a small number of countries got most of the supply."Like an orchestra,we need all instruments to be played in harmony to create music that everyone enjoys," he said.Vaccine development looks promising,as several countries have made great progress. Russia began production of its first batch of a COVID-19 vaccine on Aug 15, according to its health ministry. It's the world's first registered vaccine. Four Chinese vaccine candidates have started international stage-3 clinical trials.5. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Russia is the first country to have made progress in fighting COVID-19.B. COV AX ensures all the countries get the vaccine at the same time.C. WHO plays an important role in fighting COVID-19.D. Scientist have produced 2 billion doses of vaccines.6. What's the author's attitude towards vaccine nationalism?A. Supportive.B. Critical.C. Optimistic.D. Sympathetic.7. Tedros compared fighting COVID-19 to an orchestra to________.A. show his deep love for musicB. make the passage more interestingC. illustrate the similarities in betweenD. stress the importance of cooperation8. What can be the best title for the text ?A. United for vaccineB. Vaccine on the wayC. Fighting against COVID-19D. Say goodbye to COVID-193British scientists monitoring the symptoms(症状) of COVID-19 say a loss of the sense of smell and an inability to taste food should be added to the list of well-known indicators(指标) of COVID-19, which include a high temperature, sore throat, and persistent(持续的) dry cough. The scientists made the discovery after analyzing data collected through an app. The data was gleaned from interactions between 1.8 million users and the app between March 24 and March 31.The team looked at the information harvested from the app and developed a mathematical model that was able to conclude which symptoms in combination were the best at predicting who would subsequently test positive for the disease. The total basket of symptoms included fever, persistent cough, fatigue, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and loss of smell and taste."When combined with other symptoms, people with loss of smell and taste appear to be three times more likely to have contracted COVID-19 according to our data, and should therefore self-isolate for seven days to reduce the spread of the disease," Tim Spector, the King's College professor who led the study, told the Reuters news agency. However, the team said that a loss of smell and taste can also be an indicator of other infections(感染), such as a common cold, so not everyone with those symptoms will have COVID-19.They said a high fever and persistent cough remain the most important indicators of COVID-19 and the loss of smell and taste should only be noted if they are in combination with other symptoms. So far, Public Health England and the World Health Organization said more research is needed.9. The list of well-known indicators of COVID-19 does not include _______.A. high temperatureB. persistent dry coughC. a loss of the sense of hearingD. sore throat10. What can we learn from Tim Spector’s quote?A. People who have lost the sense of smell and taste should self-isolate for 7 days.B. His team developed a mathematical model to find out the positive cases.C. A loss of smell and taste can also be an indicator of other infections.D. A loss of smell and taste alone can be used as an indicator of COVID-19.11. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. The data was collected through an app within two weeks.B. People who can’t smell or taste must have contracted COVID-19.C. A loss of smell and taste should be considered as one of the indicators of contracting the virus.D. Patients of COVID-19 are more likely to lose the sense of smell than those with a common cold.12. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. A common cold and COVID-19.B. Why we lost the ability of smell and taste.C. What we should do during the COVID-19 pandemic.D. New probable symptoms of COVID-19.4In the 1970s, chemist James Lovelock and microbiologist Lynn Margulis developed the Gaia hypothesis(盖亚假说): all organic and inorganic components on the planet are part of one self-regulating system, working to maintain life on earth. Scientists agree that we need take significant action to control emissions(排放). But where scientists and popular movements have thus far failed to convince the world to act, it seems that Mother Earth may have succeeded, with the never-before-seen COVID-19. COVID-19 is estimated to have reduced carbon dioxide emission in China by a quarter. It caused factories to shut down, and slowed construction activities. Recent analysis shows a 70 percent drop in flights in February compared with January. And even getting into a car and going to a restaurant, shopping mall, or concert poses a risk of infection, which means that many people are choosing to stay at home and are consuming less, resulting in a significant reduction of their carbon footprints. Of course, China and the rest of the world will hope to restart normal production and consumption as soon as the virus is under control. However, some positive measures have already been taken as a result of COVID-19. As the virus is thought to originate from wildlife, Chinese authorities are revising laws and regulations regarding the country's massive wildlife trade in order to prevent future epidemics(流行病)—a win for biodiversity. The deaths of thousands of people worldwide should also serve as a lasting reminder of the fragility of life. We humans frequently ignore or repress uncomfortable thoughts of death and extinction. We would rather get on with our lives as usual, thinking everything will somehow work out in the end. Only in the face of suffering and death are we forced to view thebigger, longer-term perspective—and this is what is needed in order to react appropriately to climate change. COVID-19 has sent alarm bells ringing throughout the world.13. What does the author mention the Gaia hypothesis for?A. To tell the main idea of the text.B. To introduce the topic for discussion.C. To show the need to protect the planet.D. To stress the importance of self-regulating system.14. What is the second paragraph mainly about?A. The unexpected benefit of COVID-19.B. The economic influence of COVID-19.C. The preventive measures for COVID-19.D. The possible causes of COVID-19.15. What does the underlined word "repress" in the last paragraph refer to?A. Control.B. Hold.C. Vary.D. Test.16. What does the writer want to tell us in the text?A. It's urgent to fight the virus.B. The virus has caused many deaths.C. Life is fragile in face of disasters.D. Action is needed for climate change.5People with COVID-19 who are asymptomatic can spread the disease without any outward signs that they're sick. But a newly developed AI, with a keen algorithmic ear, might be able to detect asymptomatic cases from the sounds of people's coughs, according to a new study.A group of researchers at MIT recently developed an artificial intelligence model that can detect asymptomatic COVID-19 cases by listening to subtle differences in coughs between healthy people and infected people. Indeed, it is the Alzheimer's model that the researchers adapted in an effort to detect COVID-19.“The sounds of talking and coughing are both influenced by the vocal cords and surrounding organs.” co-author Brian Subirana, a research scientist in MIT's Auto-ID Laboratory said in a statement. “AI can pick up simply from coughs, including thingslike the person's gender, mother tongue or even emotional state. There's in fact sentiment strongly fixed in how you cough.”First, they created a website where volunteers-both healthy and those with COVID-19-could record coughs using their cellphones or computers; they also filled out a survey with questions about their diagnosis and any symptoms they were experiencing. People were a sked to record “forced coughs,” such as the cough you let out when your doctor tells you to cough while listening to your chest with a stethoscope.Through this website, the researchers gathered more than 70,000 individual recordings of forced-cough samples, according to the statement, Of those,2,660 were from patients who had COVID-19,with or without symptoms. They then used 4,256 of the samples to train their AI model and 1,064 of the samples to test their model to see whether or not it could detect the difference in coughs between COVID-19 patients and healthy people. The AI model correctly identified 98.5% of people with COVID-19, and correctly ruled out COVID-19 in 94.2% of people without the disease. For asymptomatic people, the model correctly identified 100% of people with COVID-19, and correctly ruled out COVID-19 in 83.2% of people without the disease. But "whether or not this performs well enough in a real-world setting to recommend its use as a screening tool would need further study,"Lubinsky told Live Science."What's more, further research is needed to ensure the AI would accurately evaluate coughs from people of all age s,’’ he said.17. How does the AI recognize people infected with COVID-19?A. By observing outward sick signs.B. By identifying sounds of coughs.C. By copying the Alzheimer's model.D. By talking to the healthy and the infected.18. On what basis does the AI function as a detecting tool?A. How people catch coughs.B. How people perceive coughs.C. How people make vocal sounds.D. How people release their emotions.19. Which of the following isn't a part of the research?A. V olunteers record coughs.B. V olunteers fill out a survey.C. Doctors ask for forced coughs.D. Researchers train the AI model.20. What is one of the faults of the research?A. The limited age range.B. Failure to evaluate coughs.C. Inaccuracy of the statistics.D. Low rate of identifying cases.6The sudden rise of the new coronavirus (冠状病毒) has shocked China. Although China has been doing everything possible to stop the virus, it has spread outside of its borders and into other regions. There are now confirmed cases of COVID-19 in countries including the UK, Japan, Germany, Vietnam, Russia and the United States. There is a growing fear that the effects of the outbreak will worsen if it is not contained. This has led to countries closing borders with China and putting travel bans in place, hoping to protect their own citizens. However, fear and misinformation have also caused the spread of something else — racism.Restaurants and businesses in many tourist areas across the world have posted signs banning Chinese people. Social media users recently shared a picture of a sign outside a hotel in Rome, Italy. The sign said that “all people coming from China” were “not allowed” in the hotel. S imilar signs with anti-Chinese sentiment (情绪) were also reportedly seen in South Korea, the UK,Malaysia and Canada. These signs were loud and clear —“No Chinese”. Racist actions such as these do a lot more harm than good.“My ethnicity (种族渊源) has made me feel like I was part of a threatening and diseased mass ,” Sam Phan, a master’s student at the University of Manchester, wrote to the Guardian.Edith Bracho-Sanchez, an assistant professor at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, has experience working on health issues that involve internat ional borders. “As human beings, we are afraid of the things we don’t know, but our response should be to educate ourselves, not to further spread … fears and misunderstandings,” she said. Bracho-Sanchez suggested that the media should “stick to the facts”.Phan shared a similar view: “It’s important … to see us in all our diversity, as individual human beings, and to challenge stereotypes (刻板印象). The coronavirus is a human tragedy, so let’s not allow fear to breed (引发) hatred, intolerance and racism.”Instead of spreading misinformation and fueling fearful thoughts, we should do everything we can to support those who are affected by events such as the COVID-19 outbreak. After all, the real enemy is the virus, not the people who are fighting it.21. What do Paragraphs 2-3 mainly talk about?A. How COVID-19 has spread outside of China.B. How other countries deal with COVID-19.C. COVID-19 leading to racism against Chinese people.D. COVID-19 affecting business and tourism worldwide.22. What did Bracho-Sanchez tell people with her words?A. The media helps educate people.B. It’s harmful to fear what we don’t know.C. It’s better to keep your fears to yourself.D. It’s helpful to learn about unknown things.23. What attitude does the author hold toward the COVID-19 outbreak?A. She hopes people work together to fight the virus.B. She blames Chinese for spreading the virus abroad.C. She thinks the media is responsible for misinformation.D. She criticizes China for not doing enough to contain the virus.7The CoVID-19 and flu are both respiratory infectious diseases, with similar symptoms including fever and cough, but they aren't the same. Both the CoVID-19 and flu are diseases caused by a virus. In the case of flu the pathogens(病原体)are flu viruses, and for COVID-19,it is a novel coronavirus(新型冠状病毒).Common symptoms for flu and novel coronavirus are nearly identical-fever,cough and tiredness sometimes sore throat and diarrhea. In several cases they result in pneumonia(肺炎)and even death in the worst cases. Flu has seasonal ups and downs. Although it can exist all year round, the virus infects more people in winter and spring. As for the novel coronavirus, the median age for the infected is 51.But the novel coronavirus is a brand new virus no one has total immunity no matter their age. Both the flu and the novel coronavirus are transmitted in the similar ways,by direct contact with infected patients or small droplets from the nose or mouth when a person with virus coughs or breathes.FIu can be spread by an infected person for several days before their symptoms appear. As for the novel coronavirus, spread might be possible before people show symptoms, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. For the novel coronavirus, there is also a risk for aerosol transmission(气溶胶传播)In health facilities, people may catch the virus if they breathed in aerosol, the suspension of find solid or liquid particles in the air, which have been contaminated by the virus. The novel coronavirus has also been found in patients’ fe cal (排泄物) samples, butfecal-oral transmission does not appear to be a major transmission route.24. What can we learn about the novel coronavirus?A. It has seasonal changesB. It causes less deaths than flu.C. It may spread among people of all ages.D. It only spread after people show symptoms25. Which of the following is not the way the novel coronations transmit?A. aerosol transmissionB. contact transmissionC. fecal-oral transmissionD. age transmission26. The author’s main purpose of writing the article is probably to .A. prove that flu has less harm to humans than coVID. 1gB. raise people's awareness of protecting their healthC. prove that COVID-19 won't cause human deathsD. provide some suggestions to avoid CoVID-19 infection27. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. New treatment on the novel coronavirusB. the latest research on the COVID-19 and fluC. the difference between the novel coronavirus and fluD. how to identify the CoID-19 and flu on symptoms8Late in 1990, when Paul Kagame was hiding on the Congolese side of the Virunga mountains preparing to invade Rwanda, his army were not the only inhabitants of that thickly forested volcanic range. The Virungas are also home to mountain gorillas (大猩猩). Soldiers are notoriously excited when it comes to wildlife, but Mr. Kagame ordered his men not to shoot the apes. “They will be valuable one day,” he said. He was right.By 2017, with Mr. Kagame now installed as Rwanda’s president, that country’s wil dlife-tourism industry, of which gorilla-watching on the Rwandan side of the Virungas accounts for 90%, was worth around $438 million a year. But now the world’s gorillas, and also their great-ape cousins, the chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans, face another threat from their human neighbours: covid-19.Great apes share about 98% of their DNA with human beings, and are vulnerable to many of the same diseases. So far, there have been no reported cases of wild apes sickening with the new coronavirus (冠状病毒). But research done by Amanda Melin of the University of Calgary, in Canada, and her colleagues, suggests that many primates are at risk. The virus infects people by locking onto ACE2, a protein found on the surface membranes (细胞膜) of certain cells - particularly those of the airways into the lungs. The ape version of ACE2 is, Dr Melin has discovered, identical to the human variety, so apes are likely to be particularly susceptible to SARS-COV-2.Covid-19 is novel, but primatologists (灵长类动物学家) like Dr Wrangham, who is familiar with the harm caused by diseases of human origin, are already worried. They estimate that Ebola virus alone is responsible for the deaths of a third of the world’s wild gorillas over the past three decades. Jane Goodall, a primato logist doing research on chimpanzees in Tanzania is also worried. The country has not enforced a full anti-covid lockdown, so villagers who live around the park could spread the disease to the chimps. Worse still, mountain-gorilla groups are normally harems that have several females but only a single adult male. If this silver-back were to die of covid-19, the females - likely to have been infected as well - would probably disperse to join other groups, spreading the virus further.Mr. de Merode says that if a gorilla tested positive for covid-19, his park “would consider a veterinary (兽医的) intervention to isolate (隔离) and treat the individual, but we would then be in unknown territory”. Most primatologists think isolating a sick ape would be impractical. Rather, laments Dr Wrangham, “we would just have to sit back and watch.”28. From M elin’s research, we can learn that ______.A. wild apes have sickened with covid-19B. many primates are at the risk of dying offC. ACE2 is merely founded in the lungsD. apes are likely to be infected by covid-1929. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?(①to ⑥represent paragraphs 1 – 6)A. B.C. D.30. From the last paragraph, we can infer that the attitude of the experts concerned towards isolation is ______.A. uncertain and passiveB. disapproving and pessimisticC. optimistic and activeD. enthusiastic and confident9Tech giants Apple and Google are teaming up to create a system that would let smart phone users know when they've come into contact with someone who has COVID-19.The technology would rely on the Bluetooth signals that smart phones can both send out and receive 1aperscn tests positive(阳性) for COVID-19, they could inform public health authorities through an app. Those public health apps would then warn anyone whose smart phones bad come tear the infected person's phone in the previous 14 days. The technology could be used on both Google Android phones and Apple iPhones. The companies insist that they will preserve smart phone users' privacy and their technology will be used only by public health authorities to trace the spread of COVID-19. Smart phone users can choose to use it. The software will not collect data on users' physical locations or their personally identifiable information. People who test positive would remain unknown to the public, both to the people who came in contact with them and to Apple and Goo gle. “Privacy is of greatest importance in this effort,” the companies said in a joint statement. The American Civil Liberties Union has warmed that using cellphone data to handle the pandemic carries risks of “destruction of privacy”. In a statement on Fr iday, ACLU cyber security counsel Jennifer Granick said, The system also can't work well if people don’t trust it”. She said that the joint Apple and Google project “appears to reduce the worst privacy risks, but there is still room for improvement.” She a dded that the contact tracing app should be used only for public health purposes and only for the duration of this pandemic.Public health officials say the contact tracing -finding people who have been in contact with an infected person will be a key step in lifting shelter in-place restrictions. It would allow people who are known to have been exposed to the virus to isolate themselves, while letting others recover normal activities.31. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To advertise for public health.B. To introduce a contact tracing system.C. To warn the public of risks of COVID-19.D. To raise people's awareness of privacy protection.32. What do the companies promise to do in particular?A. Warn people who test positive.B. Protect infected people's privacy.C. Work with public health authorities.D. Collect data on users physical locations.33. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 suggest?A. Public health issues are traced accurately.B. Only people's trust influences the system.C. The system is at the risk of being destroyed.D. Jennifer thinks the system should be better.34. The system is mainly designed to .A. ensure infected people's recoveryB. guarantee people's normal activitiesC. help prevent the spread of COVID-19D. encourage all the people to isolate themselves10The coronavirus pandemic(冠状病毒流行病)is a terrible crisis, of course. But it also presents an opportunity to change the way that research is conducted and shared. The way that researchers respond to COVED-19 right now can serve as a blueprint for that future. Scientists publishing data, ideas and information relating to the coronavirus pandemic on ResearchGate, a professional network that advocates open research, push against the old patterns of scientific culture.Researchers are far more likely to post early — stage research on the websites than we've traditionally seen in other industries. We're seeing people publish shorter, briefer content, and more figures. It's really exciting to see researchers upload more and more preprints(预印本).The urgency of this crisis encourages the global community of researchers to share more freely and work across industries, even as borders remain closed. The way that research is confirmed and shared hasn't changed much over the past decades, or perhaps the last century. We still rely on mysterious systems of peer review(同行评审)and the in- person conference is still a main means of knowledge exchange. The COVED-19 crisis is challenging both: one reason is that it is too slow (it can take six to nine months for a scientist's primary results to be peer-reviewed and appear in a journal), and the other, it is no longer safe. We need to try new ways to do things, in real time, and the ideas that work in this time of crisis will serve us well in the future. At ResearchgGate, we constantly work to improve scientific productivity to enable much-needed breakthroughs. This crisis encourages us to do our best to support researchers in becoming more efficient and more open. We need to connect with all the actors in science to further this change: funders, publishers, institutions and。

高考英语时事热点话题阅读热点10 体育运动精神与公民健康一、阅读理解1In the US, many people prefer sports and sports are not just for fun. They’re almost a “religion”. Thousands of sports fans buy expensive tickets to watch their favorite teams and athletes play in person. Other fans watch the games at home, sticking to their TV sets, never missing a game. Many a wife become s a “sports widow” during her husband’s favorite season. Americans’ devotion to sports has created a new class of wealthy people: professional athletes. Sports stars often receive million dollar salaries. Some even make big money by appearing in advertisements for soft drinks, shoes and almost everything.Sports are an important part of American culture. Throughout their school life, Americans learn to play many sports. Many students try out for the school teams. Athletic events at universities attract scores of fans and benefit the whole community. Many people also enjoy noncompetitive activities, like hiking, cycling, horseback riding, camping or hunting. Many sports were imported from other countries. Europeans brought tennis, golf, bowling and boxing to America. Football and baseball came from other Old World games. Only basketball has a truly American origin. Americans export sports fever as well. Satellites broadcast games to sports fans around the globe. NBA is a good example. The names of American superstars like basketball great Michael Jordan have become household words all over the world.1. The writer mainly intends to tell us that ________.A. how important sports are in AmericaB. where sports can help to make moneyC. why sports are so popular in AmericaD. what affect American’s everyday life2An extreme sport is a popular term for certain activities regarded as having a high level of danger. These activities often involve sped, height, and a high level of physical effort. In the past, young athletes would play baseball. Today, they want risk and excitement--the closer to the edge, the better. They snowboard over cliffs and mountains, or bike down steep mountains.Extreme sports started as an alternative to more expe nsive sports such as golf. A city kid who couldn’t afford expensive sports equipment could get a skateboard and have fun, but now it has become a whole new area of sports, with specialized equipment and high levels of skill. There is even an Olympics for extreme sports, called the winter X-game, which includes snow. Mountain biking and ice climbing. What makes extreme sports so popular? People love the risk. City people want to be outdoors on the weekend and do something challenging. The new equipment is so much better that people can take more risks without getting hu rt. Sure there's a risk. Once you go mountain biking or snowboarding, it’s impossible to go back to bike riding or skiing. It's just too boring. Now even the older crowd is staring to join in. Every weekend, groups of friends in their early30s get together. On weekdays they work as computer programmers in the same office. On weekends they rent mountains together.Extreme sports are certainly no for everyone. Most people still prefer to play basketball or watch sports on TV. But it has been a fact that, extreme sports are gaining in popularity.Nowadays more and more young athletes are taking part in the risky activities.5. From the passage, we can learn thatA. all young people like extreme sportsB. playing basketball is still a popular gameC. people prefer extreme sports to traditional sportsD. bike riding and skiing are boring sports.3A number of studies show that sports and other physical activities can contribute to the development of self-esteem (a feeling of pride in oneself). For example, Canadian scientists found that sixth-grade students who were more physically active had considerably higher levels of self-esteem. A study in Switzerland found that teenagers who took part in sports clubs were healthier, including being better socially adjusted, feeling less anxious, and generally being happier about their lives. Similar findings were reported in a study of Latino students, where participation in school sport was found to be greatly associated with self-esteem.There seems little doubt that part of the potency (潜能) of sports lies in their social setting. There are a lot of facts showing the importance of social connectedness (关联性) for healthy child and teenager development, and sports offer a popular and engaging setting for social interactions. Involvement in team sports has been positivelyassociated with social acceptance and a sense of belonging, especially where such involvement is characterized by positive coaching, progressive skill development, and peer support. But, the social setting of sports can exclude as well as include. There is now evidence that boy s’ and girls’ experiences of sports can be very different, and this can affect the contribution they can make to the self-esteem of players. Peer acceptance seems to be an important factor in determining the relationship between sport participation and self-esteem, and girls can be particularly sensitive to negative judgments. And studies have found that many ‘girly’ boys and girls benefit most from non-competitive physical activities. So, a note of caution ought to be sounded in case sports are considered to be a cure. Much of the literature on the most positive psychological (心理的) outcomes associated with childhood and youth sports stress the absolute importance of positive experiences. It will surprise no one that bullying, excluding or abuse experiences will harm, rather than support the development of self-esteem, and well-being in general. Sadly, it will also not be a shock to l earn that many children’s introductions to sports are far from improving the quality of life. The great developmental psychologist Jean Piaget argued that the foundations of self-esteem were laid between the ages of about 6 and 11 years of age. Importantly, this is also the time when children are most likely to be introduced to sports. We should know the importance of positive early sporting experiences for the development of both self-esteem and on-going participation in sports and other physical activities. Teachers, coaches, and parents have a responsibility to ensure that these experiences ‘catch’ as many children as possible, and for this to happen they need to remember ‘the principles of child development’: Children are not mini-adults.Problems arise when adults forget these principles, and kid themselves into thinking that they are coaching future Olympians or Super stars. Unluckily, evidence suggests that talented children are most likely to stand out when they are given time to develop, to play, and to remain children.Children are not miniature adults, and their enjoyment of sports (and their self-esteem) can suffer when adults forget this!10. Studies in Switzerland and Latino showed teenagers who often join in sports _____.A. build self-esteem earlierB. have more good experiencesC. are more sensitive to judgmentsD. are healthier both physically and mentally11. In general, the author’s attitude toward the influence of sports on teenagers i s _____.A. positiveB. criticalC. uncertainD. tolerant12. According to the author, when children take part in sports, they _____.A. will be happier about their livesB. are more likely to be attracted by competitive sportsC. should be treated by coaches and parents as super starsD. will build self-esteem if given positive comment and support13. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Children Should Take Part in SportsB. Sports Offer You a Better Teenage LifeC. Sports Experience and Building Self-EsteemD. People Should Treat Teenagers Like Miniature Adults4The latest sports craze is not even a sport. According to a recent article, “e-sports” are attracting a large number of audience. In e-sports, players and teams compete in popular video computer games such as Dota 2 and Ovenvatch. Fans fill arenas to watch the action live on huge television screens. The games have gone way past kids playing against each other while sitting on a sofa at home. The International, a major competition for players of Dota 2, awarded $24 million in prizes, with the winner taking home almost $11 million. A recent e-sports competition attracted more than 80,000 fans to the Olympic Stadium in Beijing, China.I have to admit that I am not a big fan of computer games. I know that some games can be educational, but I think too many kids spend too much time sitting in front of a screen shooting space aliens. I think it would be better if kids spent more time reading or playing real sports such as basketball, baseball and soccer.A nd please don’t tell me that competitive gaming is real sport because it requires hand-eye coordination. According to my American Heritage Dictionary, a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill.” I don’t th ink anyone works up much of a sweat playing video games.Too often, regular sports send kids a kind of message. Competition starts early, when lots of kids are not ready for the ups and downs of games. Tryouts and travel teams come next, giving too many kids the message they are“not good” at sports. So lots of kids quit sports and start playing more video games.Maybe everyone in youth sports, including coaches, parents and kids, should think more about the advantages of real sports.14. What are “e-sports” according to the text?A. Sports events on television screens.B. Video computer game competitions.C. The latest sports in the Olympic Games.D. Easy sports games for kids.15. What might the author think of “e-sports”?A. They are not instructive.B. They should be banned in school.C. They need too much time and money.D. They have some negative influence on children.16. What does the underlined word “exertion” in Paragraph 5 mean?A. Growth.B. Fitness.C. Effort.D. Energy.17. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A. To introduce a new kind of sport.B. To introduce a competition held in Beijing.C. To explain the importance of playing sports.D. To call on people to pay more attention to traditional sports.5As the parent of two teenag ers who have played multiple sports over the years, I’ve seen the good, the bad, the ugly and the absolutely cruel. However, when I think about the value of sports and why my kids continue to play sports teach kids lessons to become successful adults. Through sports, kids learn how to work in teams, have to take risks, how to challenge themselves to be better, and how to behave when they lose—and when they win.Whether kids play soccer, baseball, football, or cheer, they learn they are part of a team where one person depends on another. When my son plays baseball, he’s not the only one who needs to play well; he depends on hisdefense to make the plays in the field. When my daughter plays tennis, she depends on her partner to cut off the ball at the net and win the point, and the tennis team depends on each person in order to win the overall match. Sports also teach children to trust and respect the decisions of someone who understands how the entire team needs to work in order to succeed.Sadly, though, yout h sports have suffered from the “winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing” attitude. Although people who only exercise at weekends might be more likely to reach for a sports drink, serious athletes know there are better choices. And a new study from Appalachian State University offers proof that bananas may be a better choice than sports drinks after exercise.Researchers analyzed the blood of 20 competitive cyclists after they were given water and bananas, water only,or a 6 percent sugar drink (a sports drink) every 15 minutes during a 47一mile bike ride. The study found that the carbohydrates(碳水化合物)in bananas work as well as sports drinks to fuel athletes and help them recover. But the researchers found an additional benefit. Bananas also provide greater anti—inflammatory which benefits than sports drinks.“Consuming bananas with water during exercise has several advantages for athletes above those linked to regular sports drinks,” Dr. David Nieman said in a statement. “Banana metabolites(代谢物)that increase in the blood have a similar effect to aspirin that inhibits (抑制)COX—2 activity. This makes bananas close to the perfect athletic food.”“Although aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs (AIDs) help athletes with post exercise pain, they are often discouraged because they can cause cell damage,” Nieman tells Men's Health. “For this reason,we tell athletes not to take them,”he says. “To our pleasant surprise, we found something natural in bananas is working like these painkillers but without the risks. ”Sports drinks are still a choice, but Nieman and his team believe bananas offer more.“There’s no question that sports drinks work,” he explains. “But bananas also have other nutrients—vitamin C,B6 and these unique metabolites —that you don't get with a sports drink. ” Next up, the research t eam is looking at other fruits as exercise companions. “We're starting to look at blueberries, because we think with bananas they might work even better,” Nieman says.25. What is the aim of the study described in paragraph 2?A. To test for the effects of bananas.B. To the best way to recover.C. To prove sports drinks are useless.D. To find out if sports drink are anti-inflammatory.26. Why are bananas regarded to be the perfect athletic food?A. Bananas are full of nutrients.B. Bananas can be easily digested.C. What can be caused by eating bananas.D. Whether we should replace AIDs with bananas.28. What might Dr. David Nieman agree with?A. People shouldn’t replace sports drinks with fruits.B. Bananas offer more to sportsmen than sports drinksC. Blueberries are better for sportsmen than sports drinks.D. People shouldn’t eat or drink too much when exercising.8Sports fandom is about more than just entertainment. It can boost your self-esteem (自尊) and make you happier —and you don’t have to root for the winning team to gain the benefits.Being a sports fan is a “very psychologically healthy activity,” says Daniel Wann, professor at Murray State University whose research program centers on the psychology of sport fandom. Fandom connects us to other like-minded people, which satisfies our human need for belonging, he says. These relationships are significant: People who identify as sports fans have higher levels of self-esteem, lower levels of lo neliness and tend to be more satisfied with their lives compared to those who aren’t interested in sports, Wann says. Fans tend to have more access to social support, help and resources as well. Research suggests that when people have support from their communities, they have better health.Beyond bonding, fans get to enjoy the psychological benefits of winning, even if they have nothing to do with the players or games, says Stephen Reysen, associate professor at Texas A&M University-Commerce who studiesidentity and fandom.“Individuals feel that the fan interest (in this case a sport team) is a part of them,” Reysen says. “So when the team is winning, you feel like you are winning even though you are not a player.”Of course, teams sometimes lose. So, why do people continue to put their faith behind teams that tend to lose? People who feel a strong psychological connection to a team are more likely to root for a team when they’re having a losing season, Reysen says.“Sports fandom has nothing to do with th e outcome of a game,” Wann says. For example, if a pizza restaurant continually got your order wrong, you’d likely switch to a more reliable one. But because being a fan is so central to people’s identities, people are willing to accept defeat and contin ue to be loyal to a team.Being part of a fan community can also help people cope with losses. A 2019 study found that watching a football game with other fans helps to ease the negative psychological effects of losing.“For fans of the losing team, sharin g the pain may have protected them from losing self-esteem,” Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, co-author of the study and professor of communication at The Ohio State University said ina release.29. According to the passage, why do sports fans feel happier?A. Because they could gain the benefits from the winning team.B. Because they can share pains and happiness with people who have the common interests.C. Because they could have a low level of self-esteem.D. Because most of them are optimistic.30. What is the significance of the relationships between sports fans?A. Sports fans have support from their favorite teams.B. Sports fans have higher levels of loneliness.C. Sports fans are likely more content with their lives.D. Sports fans tend to compare themse lves to those who aren’t interested in sports.31. According to the passage, if the team has a losing season, the sports fans may .A. display their identitiesB. have a boost of self-esteemC. not support the team any moreD. have a negative psychology period32. According to the passage, what can help sports fans deal with losses of their team?A. Being part of the team.B. Ordering a pizza in a different restaurant.C. Sharing the pain with family members.D. The loyalty to the team.33. What is the passage mainly about?A. Sports fans have a closer relationship with other like-mined people.B. Sports fans have higher self-esteem and are more satisfied with their lives.C. Sports fans always put their faith behind their favorite teams.D. Sports fandom has nothing to do with the outcome of a game.9Are the Olympic Games outdated? That might seem like a strange question to ask. But it’s exactly what the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is doing. At the 2012 London Olympics, IOC President Thomas Bach noticed something. “You could see that the younger generation had no interest in the Games anymore. They were not there.”In response, the IOC wants to make the Summer Olympics more youthful. But that isn’t as simple as just adding more sports. The Ol ympic program can’t continue to grow bigger: it would become too much for host cities to handle. For now, permanently adding new sports to the Olympics is out of the question. The IOC’s solution is to continue to vote on the new program’s line-up and give host cities the opinion to add extra sports. The extra events would be included in that year’s Olympics only. This policy takes effect at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing and 3x3 baseball are all making their Olympic debuts(首次露面)there.Adding new sports, though, has sparked a lot of debate. Some sports have been pushing to be included in the Olympics for years but still haven’t made it. Meanwhile, newer sports like skateboarding or surfing are already getting the opportunity.People are also wondering what makes up an Olympic sport. Paris, the future host of the 2024 Summer Olympics, has expressed interest in adding break-dancing. Some people would like to see e-sports at the Olympics. E-sports are especially important to consider because they are spreading like wildfire. President Bach stated videogames with killing are not acceptable. One of the main principles of the Olympics is to encourage peace. At the moment, the future of e-sports is still uncertain. What about the Winter Olympics? Not to worry, the IOC has already announced seven new events for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. But the Winter Olympics situation is a little different. The Winter Olympics have less than half the sports of the Summer Olympics, so they have room to grow.34. Why does the IOC want to make the Summer Olympics more youthful?A. Because the Olympic Games are outdated.B. Because there is too much for host cities to handle.C. Because the spirit of the Olympics has got lost over time.D. Because the IOC wants to get the younger generation interested.35. Which event may first appear in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo?A. Baseball.B. Surfing.C. Speed skating.D. Break-dancing.36. What is President Bach’s attitude to adding e-sports to the Olympic Games?A. Cautious.B. Supportive.C. Curious.D. Indifferent.37. It can be inferred from the text that ________.A. every country has the chance to add extra sportsB. newly-added sports will be in the Olympics foreverC. newer sports are more competitive than some traditional sportsD. there is greater possibility of adding more sports to the Winter Olympics10Most of the teenagers today have realized the importance of physical activity. There are dozens of far-reaching benefits that sports can bring into their lives. Aside from providing an excellent form of exercise, organized sports can teach a young person some essential life-long lessons. With an abundance of junk food at their fingertips, teenagers today often battle with eating. Playing a sport can act as great motivation for them to eat nutritious food. In order to participate fully in sports, teenagers have to have a balanced diet. Learning to eat properly and sleep correctly are important lessons that carry on to their adult lives. Most teenagers have to deal with the stresses of popularity, appearance and fitting in. Participating in sports, however, can help them develop a positive self-image. If one struggles to feel like they belong, joining a team is a great way to give him or her social interaction that will eventually lead to a group of friends.Team sports aren't just about developing skills for their games. Those who participate in team sports will learn the benefits of working hard, setting goals and following rules. When teens have a coach they respect, they can also learn to listen to the authority and work hard toward a common goal. Additionally, learning to deal with losses is as important as winning with dignity. A teen who learns that losses are a part of life will be able to face any difficult challenges waiting for him or her later in life.Thousands of studies all agree that students feel more connected with their school and are motivated to work harder in class if they participate in sports. Sports give teens the opportunity to be around competitive people and gain an appreciation for hard work. Of course, participating in sports may also teach teenagers how to balance between two equally important things—like schoolwork and sports.38. Why do teenagers today tend to fight with eating junk food?A. Because they don’t have a balanced diet.B. Because they have easy access to junk food.C. Because junk food is delicious and attractive.D. Because they are motivated to eat healthy food.39. What does the word “interaction” mean in the third paragraph?A. communicationB. participationC. competitionD. appreciation40. Which of the following is NOT the benefit of participating in the organized sports?A. Developing a positive appearance and a sense of belonging.B. Learning how to balance work against play.C. Learning to face up to the failure bravely.D. Getting more opportunities to win among the competitive people.41. What is the main idea of the article?A. Sports is of vital importance to the academic performance of teens.B. Sports can encourage students to have a nutritious diet.C. Sports can have a continuing influence on adolescents.D. More and more teenagers are participating in organized sports.二、七选五。

考研英语作文时事热点词汇英文:As a graduate student preparing for the national entrance exam, I am constantly exposed to various hottopics in current affairs. One of the most discussed issues is the impact of artificial intelligence on the job market. Many people are concerned that AI will replace human workers, leading to unemployment and economic instability. However, I believe that AI can actually create new job opportunities and improve efficiency in the workplace. For example, in the field of customer service, AI chatbots can handle routine inquiries, allowing human employees to focus on more complex tasks that require empathy and critical thinking. In addition, AI can also be used to analyze large amounts of data and make predictions, which can help businesses make better decisions and increase productivity. Therefore, instead of fearing AI, we should embrace its potential to enhance our work and lives.中文:作为一名准备参加研究生入学考试的学生,我不断接触到各种时事热点话题。

And in December, a single event killed more than 2000 people in the Philippines. Sending workers to stabilize mountainsides using steel bars can help a lot, but it introduces new difficulties because of dust and loosen heavy, dangerous debris from the work. “It’s a quite dangerous job,” says Giorgio Pezzuto of D’ Appolonia, working with eight other companies. Now there may be an answer: a three-ton robot called Roboclimber.“The idea is to operate a machine far away that can do the stabilizing job without a human being near,”says Pezzuto, manager for the project, which is supported by a European organization. When connected to storm drains, the device could warn the city workers if a drain is plugged up. Then the city workers could clean the drain at once.Their project got support from many people. “Our classmate s helped us in the beginning to find information about how to use the laser system,” said the team. “We each took on a task that we are good at and the n started to work more closely with our science teacher. 高考英语时事热点话题阅读热点23 在线购物对生活等的影响一、阅读选择1Tired of all the pushing in supermarkets? Fed up with waiting in endless lines to pay for what you have bought? Angry at wasting time in traffic jams only to find no parking spaces when you eventually arrive at the store? If this is you, then online shopping is the answer to your dreams of trouble-free shopping. Or is it?Online shopping brings its own challenges. Here are a few things to bear in mind when browsing (浏览) various websites. The claim made by online sites is that shopping online is a safe and secure way to make purchases. The evidence challenges this. In any case, you only have to be the victim of fraud (诈骗) once to experience all the problems that come with this form of stealing. Use only sites that have a trusted history and an excellent reputation.Another problem is the appearance of items in reality is often quite different from what you see on your computer screen. This might not be a problem if you are buying washing up powder but could be a major disappointment when that beautiful blue dress you ordered turns up in green. Also, product descriptions are sometimes simply untrue. Perhaps the wisest plan is to purchase items where design and color are not essential to customer satisfaction. Some even argue that online shopping indirectly contributes to global warming. Yes, your car can stay parked but how are online goods delivered? Often by some large vans pouring out carbon monoxide and adding to our already desperate traffic problems. You are also by now becoming increasingly irritated (使烦恼) by the fact that the delivery is late and you have wasted the leave from work you have taken to receive it!Without question, online shopping is here to stay and it has its benefits. However, perhaps it is not as wonderful as some of its supporters claim it to be.1.The author lists several questions in Para. 1 to .A.support online shoppingB.collect answers from readersC.show his dislike of going shoppingD.introduce the topic of the passage2.By what can online shoppers avoid fraud?ing only trusted websites.B.Choosing big websites.C.Collecting shopping evidence.D.Seeking advice from the police.3.The author agrees with the fact that ______.A.customers are never satisfied with productsB.online shopping is a safe way to make purchasesC.online shopping has nothing to do with global warmingD.delivery delay often makes online shoppers unhappy4.What is the author’s attitude towards online shopping?A.V ery popular.B.A wise choice.C.Not trouble free.D.A waste of time.2These days, it seems like everything is going digital. You can find almost everything on the Internet. Many people find this way of life more convenient, because they can complete their daily chores(琐事)from the comfort of their own home.Firstly, online shopping can be far less stressful than hitting the high street shops. There are no huge crowds of people or boring long queues. With online shopping, it’s just you and your computer. It’s like you h ave the whole shop to yourself! Secondly, online stores don’t have opening and closing times. This is perfect for anyone with a busy schedule. If you want to, you can even place an online shopping order at three o’clock in the morning! In the busy modern world, there are clearly many advantages to online shopping. However, in my experience, there are also several con s… With online shopping, you can’t try before you buy, and that’s a definite disadvantage for me. Often, when my new clothes arrive, I find the y don’t fit very well. It’s always annoying when a dress is a little too big, or when sleeves are too short… Some times, the clothes are not what I was expecting. A piece of clothing might look great in photos online, but quite different in real life.In these cases, you want to return the item, but here lies the biggest problem with online shopping. You have to pay f or your order’s delivery, and for an item to be returned to the warehouse! These charges are often very expensive, which suddenly make online s hopping seem a little less convenient… That’s why I don’t choose to shoponline very frequently. For now, I will continue to find the time for a trip to a real shop, where I know exactly what I’m buying!5.What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?A.The differences among online stores.B.The methods of online shopping.C.The opening time of online stores.D.The advantages of online shopping.6.Which word can replace the underlined word“cons”in the fourth paragraph?parisons.B.Concentration.C.Disadvantages.D.Disagreements.7.According to the author, what is the biggest problem with online shopping?A.The waste of time and electricity.B.The expensive charges for the returned item.C.The disadvantages of not trying before you buy.D.The lost experience of walking in a real shop.8.What’s the author’s attitude towards online shopping?A.Disapproval.B.Doubtful.C.Curious.D.Favorable.3“Who needs a shopping mall (购物中心) if you have Taobao?” says Wang Lin, 28, a writer in Beijing.Taobao, China’s largest online shopping site (网上购物网站), has become an important part of Wang Lin’s life. She spends lots of money on Taobao. A growing number of Chinese Internet users like Wang have found the joys of online shopping. Most online shoppers are students or young workers. More women shop on line than men. Clothing and home-use products(产品) are the most popular on line.It was reported that more than 250 billion(十亿) yuan was spent on online shopping last year, 80% through Taobao.Taobao means “looking for treasure” in Chinese. People can find almost everything they need on Taobao, from clothes to books, from candies to DVD players. You may question the security of online shopping, Wang Lin said, “It’s very safe and convenient (便利的). Unless you receive the products from the sellers and are satisfied with them, the shop owner will not get the money. You can also get your money back if you want to return the products.”9.What are the most popular on line?A.Candles and DVD players.B.Clothes and books.C.Clothing and home-use products. plays.10.Taobao is ________.A.a shopping mallB.a cinemaC.an online shopperD.an online shopping site11.Most online shoppers are ________.A.youngB.oldC.babiesD.all people12.What does the underlined word “security” mean?A.质量B.安全C.信誉D.免费13.Which is the best title(标题) of the passage?A.Wang Lin’s lifeB.Online shopping in the worldC.Shopping on line is not safeD.Online shopping in China4Chinese e-commerce websites fail to pay more attention to older consumers, says a news report. There’s been a thought that younger consumers have been the driving force of online buying. That may not be the case. According to a statement from Alipay, the average expenditure (支出) of Alipay users born before the 1960s was 31,000 yuan in 2012, much higher than 14,000 yuan of those born after the 1980s. It shows that online shopping has become a key part of people’s daily consumption, for both young and old.Besides shopping, people pay bills such as water bill, electricity bill, and credit card repayment online. The middle-aged and senior consumers are also participating in that consumption revolution.Liu Chen, 56, said that his online expenditure in 2014 was over 50,000 yuan, about half of the total annual expenditure. He always pays his telephone bill online. Clothes, electrical appliances and kids’ snacks are the mainitems he purchases online.Liu’s shopping strategy is to find something good online first, then go to shops to check it out, and finally buy it online because it is cheaper. As quality concerns him, Liu only buys items that come with a guarantee.Stories such as those from Liu are representative of millions of middle-aged and older Chinese, which show the great potential of the aged in the Chinese consumption market. Yet, the market seems not to be valued as it should be.Some Chinese e-commerce websites such as jd. com, dangdang. com and amazon. cn don’t have a category for goods for the elderly on their main pages. Alibaba’s pl atform does have one, but the goods in it are not as abundant as other categories. Moreover, Taobao’s category is not really designed for elders, but their children.Despite the seeming lack of commitment to older consumers, the Chinese market for the elderly is clearly huge, and e-commerce websites should take great efforts to develop it.14.The data in Paragraph 2 is used to prove that ________.A.young people have learned to save moneyB.older people are crazy about online shoppingC.young people are the driving force of online shoppingD.both the young and the old have contributed to online shopping15.According to the passage, Liu Chen mainly spends money online on _______.a. buying clothesb. paying the telephone billc. paying the electricity billd. buying electrical appliancesA.a, b, cB.a, b, dC.b, c, dD.a, c, d16.Liu Chen chooses online shopping mainly because of its ________.A.low priceB.convenienceC.great potentialD.quality guarantee17.Which is the best title of the passage?A.Online shoppingB.Older consumers in e-commerceC.Chinese e-commerceD.Huge e-commerce market for the elderly5Shopping in the United States changes a lot. About ninety years ago most people shopped in small stores that were owned by one person or a family. Women went from the bakery to the butcher's to the grocer and on to the fruit and vegetable seller in order to get their food for the week. Then about sixty years ago, supermarkets were born. In a supermarket, people could get all the different kinds of food they needed without going to different stores. The next big change in shopping in the United States was the shopping mall. A shopping mall is a group of stores under one roof. Because malls allowed people to shop without worrying about the weather, they soon became very popular. The mall became a place for people to socialize in addition to shopping. If you walk through a mall, you will see older people sitting, chatting and drinking coffee. Malls are places for teenagers to hang out. Many teens will often just“go to the mall”and spend time with their friends. The recent change in American shopping was the superstore. Large chain stores such as WalMart, Office Depot and Toys“R”Us have been built all acr oss the United States. Because they are so large, they can buy goods at a great discount and sell them much cheaper than smaller stores.Sometimes, when they are built near small towns, many of the small town stores have to close. They just cannot compete with their giant neighbors. And now, online shopping is becoming more and more popular all over the States. People are too busy to go to the physical stores, so they go shopping over the Internet. Online shopping has lots of advantages. For instance, online stores are usually available 24 hours a day. Searching or browsing online shops can be faster than browsing the physical stores. While, online shopping also has its disadvantages. People are at higher risk of being cheated on the part of the merchant than in a physical store. If you ever have a problem with your online credit purchases, many credit card companies will happily refund (退款) your money and then set their claws on the company that wronged you. Now that’s the buying power!25. No lining up, for one. No annoying mall shopping carts with broken wheels and kids crying because their parents won’t get them what they want. When shopping online, consumers can sit down, have a coffee, and wear their slippers, not having to worry about their hair or parking, and just clicking through. Comparison shopping couldn’t be any easier. And express companies (快递公司) contribute to it a lot.26. No wonder so many companies are shaking their heads attraditional advertising and instead looking to the virtual world to attract online shoppers.A.Internet giants know consumer confidence is the key to getting a virtual shopping off the ground.B.There are other advantages for online shoppers, of course.C.Shopping online has become part of our lives.D.You never need to wait longer than a day or two to get those purchases delivered right to your door.E.But think about it for a moment.F.Consumers can even benefit a lot from shopping online.G.They have installed things like an online shopping insurance for people.三、完形填空More and more shoppers are buying things online these days, allowing them to avoid 27 sales people and long lines at checkout counters. In spite of online convenience, 28 , there are some items - like clothes - that customers prefer to 29 before buying. In light of this, two companies are finding ways to modernize stores and 30 the gap between online and in-store retail(零售).A software company that also happens to sell designer jeans, Hointer has created a fast and painless shopping31 for its customers.Shoppers walk into a Hointer store and select one of the many pairs of jeans 32 down from bars. Then they point their smart-phones at the tag and 33 the Hointer app, after which they select the size and press “try on”. The app then directs them to a specific dressing room. German-made robots bring out the 34 jeans and deliver them through a chute(斜槽) to the dressing room in about 30 seconds. Immediately after 35 pairs of jeans are dropped through another chute, the “outbox,” they disappear from the list in the app.Purchases at Hointer are made with a swipe(刷卡) of a credit card. And interacting with a salesperson is optional! This allows Hointer to hire fewer people and focus on their ultimate goal: developing 36 that supports a retail revolution.Men’s clothing retailer Bonobos has37 a more personalized shopping experience. Although it is -- in fact -- on online retailer, Bonobos had decided to open a handful of brick-and-mortar stores called Guide-shops. 2023年中考英语时事热点阅读专练 热点21 炎炎夏日以及活动安排(学生版+解析版)

2023年中考英语时事热点阅读专练热点21 炎炎夏日以及活动安排一、阅读理解1A well-known saying goes like this, “mind at peace give you coolness”. As the temperature rises day by day, it’s time to create some coolness besides keeping calm.Chinese people have some traditional ways to reduce the summer heat without air-conditioners (空调). Such ways include healthy food and tools that also help people experience the beauty of summer. Here are some choices which will bring you a surprisingly cool experience. The first one is plum juice(酸梅汤). It is a traditional healthy drink in summer in Beijing. It can reduce summer heat in the human body. People can have the juice all year round, yet summer is the best time. The second is a bamboo mat. It is a lovely must-have that can cool your summer with a naturally nice smell. There are many sizes for beds and chairs and so on. It’s really comfortable to lie on a bamboo mat and drink some plum juice while watching TV in summer. The last one is Chinese fans. Available in many shapes and materials, Chinese fans are special for the water-ink paintings they carry. 1What should you do if there is a fire at school? Do you know how to protect yourself in a large crowd? Every year since 1996, on the last Monday of the last week in March, the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students is held. This year it falls on March 29. It offers us a chance to learn more about school safety.A 2022 survey from People’s Daily shows that the worst accidents at school were a result of stampedes(踩踏) , fires and traffic.Experts suggest that right safety measures could avoid 80 percent of these accidents, China Education Daily reported. When facing an accident, the first and most important rule is to stay calm. But different accidents mean different ways of dealing with them.A stampede happens in a place where a large crowd is gathered. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands. Lean to one side, curl your body and bend your legs. When there’s a fire, you can’t get outside by stairs. You can get to the fire escape through a fire exit door or a window. Stay calm and follow teachers’ instructions. L eave the classroom and use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’ t breathe in smoke. If you take a school bus on your way home or to school, remember to wear your seatbelt and don’t walk around when the bus is moving. If you walk to school or go by bike, follow traffic rules. Wait for the green traffic light, and look left and right for cars before you cross the road.1. What do experts suggest to avoid school accidents?A. Following the teachers’ instructions.B. Stopping the students running and playing.C. Teaching students right safety measures.D. Holding a safety meeting every year.2. When there’s a fire, you should do the following things EXCEPT ________.A. use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and noseB. stay calm and follow teachers’ instructionsC. get outside by stairsD. get to the fire escape through a fire exit door3. What is the passage mainly about?A. How to deal with school safety accidents.B. Why school safety is important.C. Never be afraid during a fire.D. Introduce the results of a new survey.2People know the dangers of fires. It’s good for a family to learn how to protect against a fire. Here are some suggestions.Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to ring. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.Make escape (逃脱) plans. They should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. The most important plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can open them easily.Buy fire extinguishers (灭火器) in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them.Practice for a fire. They do fire practice because they teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules:Don’t open a hot door! The fire can grow mo re quickly if you open the door.Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be more dangerous than fire. The best air is near the floor because smoke goes up.What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop! Don’t run! The fire burns faster be cause of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll(打滚)! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket (毯子) around you to keep air away from the fire. There are many possible causes for fires. A clever family is ready all the time. If th ere is a fire, don’t forg et to call 119 for help.4. What does the underlined word “alarm” mean ?A. 警报器.B. 计时器.C. 电话.5. The Causes of a Fire.C. Protect Against a Fire.3A survey shows that the number of fires in government buildings each year is small compared to home fires. This is probably because such buildings are taken good care of and managed. However, at home after work fire safety is your own duty. For most of us who live in high-rise buildings, the safety of you and your family depends on how much you know to do with an emergency(紧急情况). When a fire happens, there is usually little time to decide what to do or how to act. The best thing is to make your emergency plan as soon as possible.Sit down with the family and prepare a careful escape project. Do remember that every fire isunpredictable. Fire and smoke can move very quickly and the situations in any part of the building may change very quickly. Smoke is usually more dangerous than fire. It can spread throughout the building and enter your house when the fire is many floors away. Some information says it is best to leave your house immediately when there is a fire. Others say it is safer to stay there. Which is correct?Usually the best thing to do is to leave the building as soon as possible. However, do not try to leave your house a long time after the fire alarm has sounded. There is a higher chance that heavy smoke has already spread into stairways and hallways.Never travel through smoke. You must stay inside your house and place wet towels at the bottom of the door to stop smoke from entering. Xinjiang terrorist incident
A bloody clash in northwestern China's restive region of Xinjiang left at least 21 dead and two others injured Tuesday in what authorities described as a case of 'terrorist violence.' The violence broke out around 1:30 p.m. in a residential compound in Kashgar, near China's border with Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, after police responded to a call from staff at the compound reporting the presence of 'suspicious people' and knives in an apartment there, according a report posted on a government website Wednesday.
Xinjiang terrorist incident
Hou Hanmin, a spokeswoman for the Xinjiang government, said Wednesday that only one of the police officers who initially responded to the call was carrying a firearm and that they were attacked by a group of people with knives, axes and sticks. Ms. Hou said nine of the officers and compound staff members died when the attackers forced them into a house, then doused it with gasoline and set it on fire. She said additional officers with firearms arrived later and shot and killed several of the attackers and arrested several more.
Xinjiang terrorist incident
Compound staff were being held hostage when police arrived, according to the report, which said 15 police and compound staff were killed in the ensuing clash. Six others described in the report as 'thugs' were shot dead, and eight more arrested. The government's account of the events couldn't be independently verified Wednesday.
