In May 2012, SpaceX made history when it became the first privately owned company to successfully dock a spacecraft with the International Space Station (ISS). SpaceX sent one of its Dragon capsules up to the ISS with a 400-kilogram payload consisting of food and clothing for the six-man team of astronauts that mans the station. Exploring the ocean’s depths is clearly something of an obsession for the Canadian filmmaker. In 2012, Cameron took things a stage further, as he descended to the very bottom of the sea alone in a “vertical torpedo.” As part of a National Geogr aphic expedition, Cameron became the first man to journey to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, the deepest point of the world’s oceans. The 11-kilometer descent took two hours and 36 minutes, while the return journey back to the surfac e was a lot quicker at roughly 70 minutes. Using a variety of tools and technology, Cameron’s vehicle – a one-man submarine called the Deepsea Challenger – crawled along the seabed as the director-turned-explorer attempted to collect samples and shoot video footage.47. For a long time it was claimed that Armstrong had made a grammatical gaffe, as he had forgotten to use the word “a” before the word “man.” The omission of the all-important indefinite article would have made the sentence a tautology – a statement that repeats a word or idea –as the words “man” and “mankind” essentially mean the same thing. However, Armstrong, who passed away in 2012, always insisted that he did say the word as he stepped out of the Apollo 11 onto the surface of the Moon and, while it remains inaudible to the ear in the official recording, an audio analysis in 2006 indicates that he did indeed utter the word.17. How often do most women write cards or notes to their boyfriends or husbands?I’m betting it’s a pretty low figure. It probably has something to do with feeling like you are back in high school, passing notes to the boy at the desk next to yours. You shouldn’t feel self-conscious about written correspondence, though, and there shouldn’t have to be a reason.Writing a card to your man is a great way to show him you’re thinking about him and how much you care. Try leaving it on his pillow before he goes to work so he’ll see it in themorning and look at it during his work day.Welcome SurprisesRather than organizing things on the weekend as is usual, try spontaneously suggesting a night out during the week or at a time when he is least likely to expect it. To make it an even more special night, you could try setting something up in advance, like booking a table at the top spot in town or getting hold of tickets to a ball game. Although his idea of a great night out might not be exactly the same as yours, it’s all about the effort that you put into making your partner feel special.17. He enjoyed unparalleled successes followed by major failures. At the beginning of the decade, he won seven Oscars for his epic western, Dances with Wolves, which he starred in and directed. Five years later came Waterworld. Set in an age when the polar ice caps have melted and most of the world is submerged, this fantasy film was the most expensive movie ever made at the time. The odd thing about Waterworld is that, while it is often cited as a film that lost millions of dollars, it actually turned a profit – eventually. Still, it was nominated for four Golden Raspberries – the awards for bad movies – and won two. Two years later, in 1997, Costner did even better (or, rather, worse) by winning a record five Razzies for The Postman.Cat-astrophic Failureinto this category. Stepping up to accept her Razzie for worst actress in 2005, Halle Barry thanked the film company for putting her in an appalling movie. “It was just what my career needed,” she added, sarcastically. Berry’s joke was understandable – she had won the Oscar for best actress just four years earlier.43. When did Kevin Costner enjoy the most fame?a. early 90sb. late 90sc. only in 1995d. only in 199744. Without looking, you probably don’t have a clue, right? The battery brand Energizer found out the hard way that a catchy ad campaign doesn’t necessarily translate into a boost to sales when it failed to capitalize on a hugely popular series of commercials starting in the 1980s. At the time, the leading brand was Duracell, which had used a drum-playing rabbit called the Duracell Bunny as its mascot since the early 1970s. Seeing a chance to cash in on the back of this character, Energizer created its own Energizer Bunny which was shown outlasting Duracell’s bunny. There was not much to differentiate Energizer’s rabbit from Duracell’s (they gave him a pair of shades to make him look cooler), but the commercials were a hit with consumers, due in part to the light-hearted mocking of a competitor. The problem was, while everyone recognized the bunny and the campaign, hardly anyone knew which company was behind it. In fact, a study showed that 40 percent of people thought the Energizer ads were for Duracell. Furthermore, despite the popularity of the commercials, Energizer sales actually dropped.47. According to the excerpt what prompted Energizer to create the ads?a. It wanted to create a unique bunny.c. It wanted to make fun of its competitor.d. It wanted to create an international campaign.48. What problem or problems did Energizer encounter?a. People loved the ads but hated the product.b. People loved the ads but could recall the product.c. People felt bad that they copied the Duracell bunny.d. People were turned off by the bunny’s shades.49. What did the study mentioned in the excerpt show?a. Sales increased for Duracell.b. Sales declined for Duracell.c. Sales remained steady for Energizer.d. Sales fell for Energizer.50. Which of the following is closest in meaning to mascot?a. representativeb. campaignc. competitord. shades。

Reading ComprehensionDirections: Read the following excerpt from The Root of Morality and answer the questions that follow. For me, altruism is the only possible basis for morality. Of course people everywhere act from self-interest and, historically, humans have done some appalling things to one another. However, if most of us didn’t have feelings o f empathy and duty toward our fellow creatures, society would cease to function. Some people argue that we never truly act based on altruistic motives alone. For example, people who give to charity may do so to make themselves feel good or to give themselves an image of benevolence that will impress others. Conversely, people who refrain from immoral acts could be doing so from fear of looking bad, rather than pure kindness. I think this is a pretty cynical view of human interaction. Morality can’t be founded merely on the desire for praise and the fear of disgrace.17. What would be a good description of altruism?a. Being good to others and getting something back.b. However, nuclear families typically center on a married couple and may have any number of children. There are differences in definitions of the nuclear family even among experts. Some definitions allow only biological children that are full-blood siblings, while others allow for a stepparents and any mix of dependent children including stepchildren and adopted children. Other definitions have changed over the years to include familiesheaded by same-sex parents or additional adult relatives who take on parenting roles. Directions: Read the following excerpt from All at Sea: Endangered Marine Life and answer the questions that follow.
Manatees
Commonly known as sea cows, these strange-looking animals are actually more closely
related to elephants. Around the world, the various species of manatees are in trouble, but the Florida manatee – a subspecies of the West Indian manatee – is seriously endangered, with an estimated population of fewer than 3,000 mature individuals remaining. Studies indicate that this figure will drop by up to 20 percent over the next 40 years and that the creature could be facing extinction within a century. The sad part is that these gentle giants have few predators as they have evolved in parts of the ocean where the only animals capable of hunting them (orcas and sharks) are not often present. Instead, the vast majority of these mammals are killed by injuries sustained when they are hit by boats. Polluted waters are also considered to be a serious problem.
17. According to the excerpt, how many manatees will be left in the wild 40 years from now?
a. 3,400
b. 3,000
c. 2,400
d. 600
18. Where can manatees be found now?
a. Only in Florida
b. In many places on earth
c. Only in the West Indies
d. It is difficult to say.
19. Which is one reason why the manatees are disappearing?
a. They are eaten by sharks and orcas.
b. Some fishermen hunt them.
c. They have little food sources.
d. They get hit by boats.
20. Which of the following is closest in meaning to sustained?
a. occur
b. endanger
c. remain
d. evolve。
