Reading and ThinkingJOHN SNOW DEFEATS “ KING CHOLERA”约输•斯诺战胜“霍乱王”Cholera used to be one of the most feared diseases in the world, until a British doctor. John Snow, showed how it could be overcome. This illness causes severe diarrhoea, dehydration, and even death. In the early 19th century, when an outbreak of cholera hit Europe, millions of people died from the disease. As a young doctor, John Snow became frustrated because no one knew how to prevent or treat cholera. In time, he rose to become a famous doctor, and even attended to Queen Victoria when she gave birth. However, he never lost his desire to destroy cholera once and for all.

In general, doctors in those days had two contradictory theories to explain how cholera spread. One theory was that bad air caused the disease. Another was that cholera was caused by an infection from germs in food or water. Snow subscribed to the second theory. It was correct, but he still needed proof. Consequently, when an outbreak of cholera hit London in 1854, Snow began to investigate. He discovered that in two particular streets the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why.

Is talent more important than choice? This is a question that has been debated for a long time. Some people argue that talent is the most important factor for success, while others believe that choice and hard work play a bigger role. In my opinion, choice is more important than talent.Firstly, talent alone is not enough to guarantee success. There are many talented individuals who never reach their full potential because they don't make theright choices. For example, someone may have a natural talent for playing the piano, but if they choose not to practice and develop their skills, they will never become a great pianist. On the other hand, someone with less talent but a strong work ethic and determination can surpass those with natural talent through hard work and making the right choices.Secondly, the choices we make determine our path inlife. We all have different talents and abilities, but itis the choices we make that determine how we use them. For instance, someone may have a talent for writing, but ifthey choose to pursue a career in finance instead, they may never fully realize their potential as a writer. On the other hand, someone with a passion for writing who choosesto pursue it as a career can achieve great success, even if they don't have the same natural talent as others.Furthermore, choice allows us to adapt and grow. We are not born with all the skills and knowledge we need to succeed. It is through the choices we make to learn and develop new skills that we can overcome obstacles and achieve our goals. For example, someone may have a talentfor public speaking, but if they choose not to take any public speaking courses or practice their skills, they may struggle to communicate effectively in front of an audience. However, someone who recognizes the importance of choiceand takes the initiative to improve their public speaking skills can become a confident and persuasive speaker. In conclusion, while talent is certainly important, itis the choices we make that ultimately determine our success. Talent alone is not enough to guarantee success, but with the right choices and hard work, anyone canachieve their goals. So, don't underestimate the power of choice.

Talent is a natural ability or aptitude for something, while choice is the act of selecting or making a decision among several possibilities. Both talent and choice play significant roles in shaping an individual's life, but the importance of choice often outweighs that of talent.Firstly, choice empowers individuals with agency over their lives. When faced with multiple options, individuals can exercise their judgment and select the path that aligns best with their aspirations, values, and circumstances. This freedom to choose allows individuals to chart their own course and shape their destinies, regardless of their inherent talents.Secondly, choice fosters personal growth and development. By making choices and facing their consequences, individuals learn from their experiences anddevelop valuable skills such as decision-making, problem-solving, and resilience. These skills are essential for navigating the complexities of life and achieving success, regardless of one's natural abilities.Thirdly, choice promotes social equality. In a world where talent is often unevenly distributed, choice can level the playing field. By providing individuals with opportunities to select their own paths, regardless of their background or circumstances, society can create a more just and equitable system. While talent may provide certain advantages, it is ultimately limited by its inherent nature. Choice, on the other hand, is boundless and empowers individuals with the ability to transcend their circumstances and achieve their full potential. By prioritizing choice over talent, individuals can unlock their true potential, create meaningful lives, and contribute positively to society.

In my opinion, while talent is certainly important, I believe that the choices we make in life are ultimately more significant. Talent may provide a starting point or a natural advantage, but it is our choices that determine how far we can go and what we can achieve. One reason why choices are more important than talent is that talent alone is not enough to guarantee success. Take the example of a naturally gifted athlete. They may have a natural talent for a particular sport, but without the discipline to train hard, make sacrifices, and make the right choices in terms of diet and lifestyle, their talent will go to waste. On the other hand, someone with less natural talent but who makes the choice to work hard, persevere, and constantly improve themselves can surpass those with more talent who do not make the same choices.Furthermore, choices allow us to shape our owndestinies and create opportunities for ourselves. We have the power to choose our goals, our actions, and our attitudes. We can choose to take risks, step out of our comfort zones, and pursue our passions. It is through these choices that we can discover our true potential and achieve personal fulfillment. Talent alone cannot provide us with the same level of agency and control over our own lives. In addition, choices also play a role in personal growth and character development. When we are faced with difficult decisions or challenging situations, it is our choices that reveal our true character. We can choose to be resilient, courageous, and determined in the face of adversity. These choices not only shape who we are as individuals, but also impact how others perceive us and the opportunities that come our way.

We are What We Choose选择比天赋更重要Remarks by Jeff Bezos, as delivered to the Class of 2010Baccalaureate(贝索斯在普林斯顿大学2010年学士毕业典礼上的演讲)May 30, 2010(2010年5月30日)As a kid, I spent my summers with my grandparents on their ranch in Texas. I helped fix windmills, vaccinate cattle, and do other chores. We also watched soap operas every afternoon, especially "Days of our Lives." My grandparents belonged to a Caravan Club, a group of Airstream trailer owners who travel together around the U.S. and Canada. And every few summers, we'd join the caravan. We'd hitch up the Airstream trailer to my grandfather's car, and off we'd go, in a line with 300 other Airstream adventurers.

UNIT 1 ARTLove of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art. —Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reading and ThinkingA SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING西方绘画艺术简史What is Western art? It is hard to give a precise definition. As there have been so many different styles of Western art, it is impossible to describe them all in a short text. Perhaps the best way to understand Western art is to look at the development of Western painting over the centuries.

The Middle Ages (from the 5th to the 15th century)中世纪(5世纪到15世纪)During the Middle Ages, the purpose of Western art was to teach people about Christianity. Thus, artists were not interested in painting realistic scenes. Their works were often primitive and two-dimensional, and the main characters were often made much larger than everyone else to show their importance. This began to change in the 13th century with Giotto di Bondone (1267-1337). While his paintings still had religious themes, they showed real people in a real environment. In particular, his paintings are set apart from other paintings by their realistic human faces and deep emotional impact.

we are what we choose课后答案

we are what we choose课后答案“Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy – they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.”–– Jeff BezosI got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t already have a good job.”That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but ultimately (最后), I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices.1. What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?A. His dream of being an inventor.B. The support of his wife.C. The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him.B. He would be very excited if he tried it out.C. He would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try.D. The decision to not try the online bookstore wouldterrify him.3. We Are What We Choose参考答案1-4 CACDBTwo new studies suggest that modern running shoes could increase the risk of injuries to runners. One study involved sixty-eight healthy young women and men who ran at least twenty-four kilometers a week. The runners were observed on a treadmill machine (跑步机). Sometimes they wore running shoes. Other times they ran barefoot (赤脚).Researchers from the JKM Technologies company in Virginia, the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado did the study. They found that running shoes create more stress that could damage knees, hips and ankle joints than running barefoot. They observed that the effect was even greater than the effect reported earlier for walking in high heels. The study appeared in the official scientific journal of The American Academy of Physical Medicine. The other study appeared in the journal Nature. It compared runners in the United States and Kenya. The researchers were from Harvard University in Massachusetts, Moi University in Kenya and the University of Glasgow in Scotland. They divided the runners into three groups. One group had always run shoeless. Another group had always run with shoes. And the third group had changed to shoeless running.Runners who wear shoes usually come down heel first. That puts great force on the back of the foot. But the study found that barefoot runners generally land on the front or middle of their foot. That way they ease into their landing and avoid striking their heel.Harvard’s Daniel Lieberman led the study. He says the way most running shoes are designed may explain why those who wearthem land on their heels. The heel of the shoe is bigger and heavier than other parts of the shoe, so it would seem more likely to come down first. Also, the heel generally has thick material under it to soften landings. But the researchers do not suggest that runners immediately start running barefoot. They say it takes some training. And there can be risks, like running when your feet are too cold to feel if you get injured. The study was partly supported by Vibram, which makes a kind of footwear that it says is like running barefoot. The findings have gotten a lot of attention. But the researchers say there are many problems in the way the press has reported in their paper. So they have tried to explain their findings on a Harvard Website.5. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. Walking in high heels could cause less serious effects than running barefoot.B. Two new discoveries encourage people to run in high heels.C. Running in shoes is partly good to runners.D. Two new studies prove running without shoes is beneficial to runners in most cases.6. Which part of our body could be injured if we run in running shoes?A. Toes.B. Hips.C. Feet.D. Legs.7. What can we learn from the passage?A. The way that we run by landing on the front or middle of our foot could avoid damaging our heel.B. We should start running barefoot in no time.C. Running in modern running shoes could cause more serious effects than running in high heels.D. We won’t be injured if we run barefoot.8. What is the writer’s attitude towards the use of the modern running shoes?A. Persuasive.B. Negative.C. Objective.D. Supportive. 5-8 DBACCChristmas, Easter and birthday parties can be difficult times for grandmothers and parents as they rush around trying to arrange the perfect celebration or making everyone as happy as possible! And, like Truss – author of Eats, shoots & Leaves – I have a “zero tolerance” approach to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid. Now, Truss and I disagree on what it means to have “zero tolerance”. She thinks that people who mix up basic grammar “deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked (砍) up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave”, while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job – even if they are otherwise qualified for the position.Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies, iFixit or Dozuki, takes a compulsory grammar test. If job hopefuls can’t distinguish between “to” and “too”, their applications go into the bin.Of course, is the world’s largest online repair manual (指南), and Dozuki helps companies write their own technical documentation, like paperless work instructions and step-by-step user manuals. So, it makes sense that we’ve made a strong strike against grammar errors. But grammar is relevant for all companies. Yes, language is constantly changing, but that doesn’t make grammar unimportant. Good grammar is credibility, especially on theInternet. And, for better or worse, people judge you if you can’t tell the difference between “their”“there” and “they’re”.Good grammar makes good business sense – and not just when it comes to hiring writers. Writing isn’t in the official job description of most people in our office. Still, we give our grammar test to everybody, including our salespeople, our operations staff, and our programmers.Grammar signifies more than just a person’s ability to remember high school English. I’ve found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing – like stocking shelves or labeling parts. It is the same with programmers. Applicants who don’t think writing is important are likely to think lots of other things also aren’t important.12. The author agrees with Lynne Truss in that ________.A. grammar mistakes can’t be toleratedB. books on grammar make people stupidC. people need to learn basic grammarD. grammar mistakes are absolutely unavoidable13. What’s the author’s “zero tolerance” approach to these job seekers who mix up basic grammar?A. They should be left out for a job.B. They have to correct their mistakes.C. They aren’t qualified for their jobs.D. They must be severely punished.14. Which of the following is TRUE of iFixit and Dozuki?A. Only one of them has a compulsory grammar test.B. They are companies where one learns grammar.C. Grammar is quite important for their existence.D. They depend on grammar correction for a living.15. What can we learn from the text?A. Companies giving grammar tests may have no good business sense.B. Grammar becomes unimportant as language is constantly changing.C. A “zero tolerance” approach to grammar errors might seem a little unfair.D. People who pay attention to writing may pay attention to other things.

I loved and worshipped my grandparents and I really looked forward to these trips. On one particular trip, I was about 10 years old. I was rolling around in the big bench seat in the back of the car. My grandfather was driving. And my grandmother had the passenger seat. She smoked throughout these trips, and I hated the smell.

At that age, I'd take any excuse to make estimates and do minor arithmetic. I'd calculate our gas mileage -- figure out useless statistics on things like grocery spending. I'd been hearing an ad campaign about smoking. I can't remember the details, but basically the ad said, every puff of a cigarette takes some number of minutes off of your life: I think it might have been two minutes per puff. At any rate, I decided to do the math for my grandmother. I estimated the number of cigarettes per days, estimated the number of puffs per cigarette and so on. When I was satisfied that I'd come up with a reasonable number, I poked my head into the front of the car, tapped my grandmother on the shoulder, and proudly proclaimed, "At two minutes per puff, you've taken nine years off your life!"

接着,我捅了捅坐在前面的祖母的头,又拍了拍她的肩膀,然后骄傲地宣称,“每天吸两分钟的烟,你就少活九年!”I have a vivid memory of what happened, and it was not what I expected. I expected to be applauded for my cleverness and arithmetic skills. "Jeff, you're so smart. You had to have made some tricky estimates, figure out the number of minutes in a year and do some division." That's not what happened. Instead, my grandmother burst into tears. I sat in the backseat and did not know what to do. While my grandmother sat crying, my grandfather, who had been driving in silence, pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway. He got out of the car and came around and opened my door and waited for me to follow. Was I in trouble? My grandfather was a highly intelligent, quiet man. He had never said a harsh word to me, and maybe this was to be the first time? Or maybe he would ask that I get back in the car and apologize to my grandmother. I had no experience in this realm with my grandparents and no way to gauge what the consequences might be. We stopped beside the trailer. My grandfather looked at me, and after a bit of silence, he gently and calmly said, "Jeff, one day you'll understand that it's harder to be kind than clever."

”What I want to talk to you about today is the difference between gifts and choices. Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy -- they're given after all. Choices can be hard. You can seduce yourself with your gifts if you're not careful, and if you do, it'll probably be to the detriment of your choices.

This is a group with many gifts. I'm sure one of your gifts is the gift of a smart and capable brain. I'm confident that's the case because admission is competitive and if there weren't some signs that you're clever, the dean of admission wouldn't have let you in.
