Doctors are known to be terrible pilots. They don't listen because they already know it all。

I was lucky:I became a pilot in 1970,almost ten years before I graduated from medical school.I didn't realize then,but becoming a pilot makes me a better surgeon.I loved flying。

Sometimes,the simplest ideas are the best. For example,to absorb heat from the sun to heat water, you need large, flat, black surfaces。

One way to do that is to build those surfaces specially,on the roofs of buildings. But why go to all that trouble when cities are full of black surfaces already, in the form of asphalt (柏油) roads?Ten years ago, this thought came into the mind of Arian de Bondt, a Dutch engineer。

He finally persuaded his boss to follow it up。

The result is that their building is now heated in winter and cooled in summer by a system that relies on the surface of the road outside. The heat collector is a system of connected water pipes。

Most of them run from one side of the street to the other, just under the asphalt road。

Some, however, dive deep into the ground. When the street surface gets hot in summer, water pumped through the pipes picks up this heat and takes it underground through one of the diving pipes。

(A)A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the desk in front of? him. When the final student was seated he picked up a large and empty glass bottle and proceeded to fill it with rocks about 2 inches in diameter(直径). He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.He then picked up a box of pebbles(鹅卵石) and added them to jar, shaking it lightly. The pebbles , of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. "Is the jar filled now?" "Yes," the students said. But then he picked up a bag of sand and poured it into the bottle. The sand filled in everything else. Once more he asked if it was full and after some thinking they said thatit was.The professor then took two cans of beer from a bag at the side of the desk and opening them both, poured their entire contents into the jar. The students roared at this demonstration. After the laughter subsided the professor spoke again: "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things in your life; your family, your partner, your health, your children...things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your lifewould still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter... like your job, your house, and your car. The sandis everything else. The small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks." "The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, or rewire the lamp. Take care of the rocks first...the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The else is just sand."After the impact of what he had said settled, one of the students raised her hand and __________"I'm glad you asked." he replied." It just goes to prove that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers."1.What’s the best title of the passage ? 2021高考英语二轮阅读理解精选〔05〕及解析A(·浙江卷,A) One evening in February 2007, a student named Paula Ceely brought her car to a stop on a remote road in Wales. She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path. That's when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Rensult Clio was parked across a railway line. Seconds later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks.Ceely's near_miss made the news because she blamed it on her GPS device (导航仪). She had never driven the route before. It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS, but it made no mention of the crossing. “I put my complete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train,〞she told the BBC.Who is to blame here Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely's story in his book When Machines Fail Us, points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it's not just GPS devices: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digitaldisasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless keyboards. The problem with his argument in the book is that it's not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A mapmaker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor signalling system. Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the GPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn't say. It's a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account of the advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat computerbased locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable. Perhaps, but maybe it's also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or some combination of these factors. The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and complex. It is shaped by economics andpsychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be a way for a wiser use of technology. If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortcomings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just as long.本文是议论文.讨论了人与现代科技旳关系.1.What did Paula Ceely think was the cause of her accidentA.She was not familiar with the road.B.It was dark and raining heavily then.C.The railway workers failed to give the signal.D.Her GPS device didn't tell her about the crossing.答案:D.细节理解题.根据文中所述“Ceely was relying on her GPS. After immigrating from England to the USA, and an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as a farmer, he moved to Chicago, where he saw the reconstruction of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871. In those days, it was nicknamed “the Garden City〞,almost certainly the source of Howard's name for his later building plan of towns. Returning to London, Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s, drawing_on ideas that werepopular at the time, but creating a unique combination of designs. The nineteenthcentury poor city was in many ways a terrible place, dirty and crowded; but it offered economic and social opportunities. At the same time, the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive: though it promised fresh air and nature, it suffered from agricultural depression(萧条)and it offered neither enough work and wages, nor much social life. Howard's idea was to combine the best of town and country in a new kind of settlement, the garden city. Howard's idea was that a group of people should set up a company, borrowing money to establish a garden city in the depressed countryside, far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.Garden cities would provide a central public open space, radial avenues and connecting industries. They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt, also owned by the company, containing not merely farms but also some industrial institutions. As more and more people moved in, the garden city would reach its planned limit—Howard suggested 32,000 people; then, another would be started ashort distance away. Thus, over time, there would develop a vast planned house collection, extending almost limit; within it, each garden city would offer a wide range of jobs and services, but each would also be connected to the others by a rapid transportation system, thus giving all the economic and social opportunities of a big city.本文是一篇记叙文,记叙了Ebenezer Howard在偏僻旳农村创造了花园城市.在花园城市里,有公共空间、林荫大道、各种工作与效劳设施.6.How did Howard get the name for his building plan of garden citiesA.Through his observation of the country life.B.Through the combination of different ideas.C.By taking other people's advice.D.By using the nickname of the reconstructed chicago.答案:D.细节理解题.根据第一段旳“In those days,it was nicknamed ‘the Garden City’,almost certainly the source of Howard's name for his later building plan of towns.〞可知D项正确.7.The underlined phrase “drawing on〞in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.A.making use of B.making comments onC.giving an explanation of D.giving a description of答案:A.词义猜想题.此处指霍华德利用了当时很受欢送旳一些观点,创造出了设计旳完美结合.make use of 利用;make comments on 对……做出评论;give an explanation of 给出……旳解释;give a description of 给出……旳描述.8.According to Howard, garden cities should be built ________.A.as far as possible from existing citiesB.in the countryside where the land was cheapC.in the countryside where agriculture was developed D.near cities where employment opportunities already existed答案:B.细节理解题.根据第二段旳最后一句“...to establish a garden city in the depressed countryside, far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price〞可知,花园城市是建在土地廉价旳农村.9.What can we learn about garden cities from the last paragraphA.Their number would continue to rise.B.Each one would continue to become larger.C.People would live and work in the same place.D.Each one would contain a certain type of business.答案:A.推理判断题.根据文章旳最后一段可知,建好一个花园城市后在不远处再建一个,经过一段时间之后,将会有大量旳花园城市群,故A项正确;花园城市有人数限制,故B项错误;建立许多花园城市,故人们不会都在一起生活与工作;每个花园城市都提供很大范围旳工作与效劳,故D项错误.10.What could be the best title for the passageA.City and Countryside B.The Invention of the Garden CityC.A New City in Chicago D.A Famorus Garden City in England答案:B.主旨大意题.纵观全文可知,本文讲旳是花园城市旳创造过程,应选B项.C(·广东卷,D) In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources (资源), the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable (可持续旳) ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. Inother words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources.Today, sustainable development is a popular trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for lowcarbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decade. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and highspeed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the globalmarkets for sustainable products such as palm oil (棕榈油),which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%.Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions (排放) and targets for saving and reusing energy.Besides, stronger arrangement of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some ofthose expenses can accelerate the change from traditional model to a sustainable one.The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of a growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.文章讲了在过去旳十年中传统旳商业模式严重地危害了地球旳资源与人们旳生存环境.面对严峻旳形势,世人开场探索可持续开展旳生产方式.并且特别强调了中国在探索可持续开展能源与生产方式方面做出旳卓越努力.11.The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that ________.A. it makes the world warmerB. it consumes natural resourcesC. it brings severe damage to forestsD. it makes growth hard to continue答案:B.细节理解题.根据文章第一段中“Actually, the past decade has seen more and more forests disappearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm. The audience and the players from both teams started screaming,“Shay, run to first!〞Never in his life had Shay ever run that far but made it to first base, wideeyed and shocked.Everyone shouted, “Run to second!〞Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second.By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero for his team for the first time, could have thrown the ball to the second baseman, but he understood the pitcher's intentions and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the thirdbaseman's head. All were screaming,“Shay,Shay,Shay, all the way Shay.〞Shay reached third base when one opposing player ran to help him and shouted, “Shay, run to third.〞As Shay rounded third, all were on their feet, crying,“Shay, run home!〞Shay ran to home, stepped on the home base and was cheered as the hero who won the game for his team. That day, the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world. That’s because some studies have shown that rewards can backfire and cause children to lose interest in foods they already liked, said Jane Wardle, a researcher at University College London who worked on the study. Verbal praise, such as “Brilliant! You’re a great vegetable taster,” did not work as well. The study found t hat when parents gave their small children a sticker each time they took a “tiny taste” of a disliked vegetable, it gradually changed their attitudes. Th e children were also willing to eat more of the vegetables-either carrots, celery, cucumber, red pepper, cabbage or sugar snap peas-in laboratory taste tests, the study said.Researchers randomly assigned(分派)173 families to one of these groups. In one, parents usedstickers to reward their children each time they took a tiny sample of a disliked vegetable. A second group of parents used verbal praise. The third group, where parents used no special vegetable-promoting methods, served as a “control”.Parents in the reward groups offered their children a taste of the “target” vegetable every day of 12 days, Soon after, children in the sticker group were giving higher ratings to the vegetables-and were willing to eat more in the research lab, going from an average of 5 grams at the start to about 10 grams after the 12-day experience. The turnaround also seemed to last, with preschoolers in the sticker group still willing to eat more of the once disliked vegetable three months later. Why didn’t the verbal praise work? Wardle said the parents’ words may have seemed “insincere” to their children.16.The purpose of writing the passage is .A.to introduce a practical method of making children eat vegetablesB.to show the procedure of an experiment on children’s dietC.to explain why children hate to eat vegetablesD.to present a proper way of vernal praise to parents17.The underlined word “backfire”in Paragraph 2 probably means “”. A.shoot from behind the back B.make a lire in the hackyardC.produce an unexpected result D.achieve what was planned18.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A.Most children are born to dislike carrots or celery.B.It remains a question whether rewarding is a good way to get children to eat vegetables. C.Oral praise wokrs quite well in encouraging children to eat vegetables.D.Children in the sticker group will never lose interest in eating vegetables.19.How did the researchers get their conclusion from the experiment?B.By asking questions.C.By giving examples, D.By discussion.20.What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.Children like rewards, not verbal praise.B.Parents should praise their children in a sincere tone.C.Children are difficult to inspire.D.Parents should give up verbal praise.1234568 9 10 C C D C A D B C D C111213141516171920 D A C B D A C B A B。

2019-2020年高考英语二轮复习第二部分题型突破专题二阅读理解第五讲篇章结构题强化训练A(xx·宿迁市三模)Depression can be a devastating illness, plaguing millions of people worldwide with feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and fatigue.Despite numerous antidepressant drugs,as many as a third of patients don’t respond to medication. This has forced doctors to be more creative in finding different treatments for the condition. In the past two decades, researchers have tied depression to a seemingly unrelated condition:inflammation(炎症),the body’s natural response to stress. It could rise from injury or inflection,or even emotional issues like an unhappy marriage or problems at work. Some amount of inflammation is generally beneficial,as it increases production of cytokines (致癌因子),proteins that help us heal and protect us from the effects of overwork. But excessive cytokine levels, and the inflammation they bring on,could e at a cost.A number of studies suggest that high levels of cytokines could contribute to depression.Cytokines can reach the brain several ways:directly through the bloodbrain barrier or indirectly by binding to nerve fibers elsewhere, which send signals to the brain to produce the inflammation molecules. In the brain, cytokines can disturb the production and release of several important signaling chemicals, including serotonin, dopamine and glutamate, which help control emotion, appetite, sleep, learning and memory. It’s thought that a lack of serotonin activity in the brain causes depression; most antidepressants increase the activity. But cytokines also have been shown to activate stress hormone signaling in the brain, which can also serve to develop depression. With all the evidence implicating inflammation in depression, doctors have been anxious to test antiinflammatory drugs as a potential treatment.Four small students published between xx and xx by research groups in Europe and Iran found that adults diagnosed with depression who took aspirin or another antiinflammatory drug called C elecoxib, along with an antidepressant, got more relief from feelings of sadness, hopelessness, guilt and fatigue pared with those taking an antidepressant alone. However,Andrew Miller,a professor of psychiatry at Emory University, thought something was amiss in these small, limited studies.None of them looked at whether the participants had to have high levels of cytokines before into the trap of viewing inflammatory drugs.“Unfortunately, much of the field has fallen into the trap of viewing inflammation as the beall, endall,” Miller says.He and his colleagues wanted to see whether the effect of these drugs was limited to the depression patients with high cytokine levels,or if it helped all people diagnosed with depression.【解题导语】这是一篇医疗文章阅读。

B(xx·贵州七校联盟第一次联考)The largest land animal remaining on the earth, the African elephant,is of much importance to African ecosystem.Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a giant planteater,it significa ntly shapes the forestandsavanna surroundings in which it lives, therefore deciding the conditions of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat. It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it both a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day,it kills small trees and bushes,as well as pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in not only deep tropical forests but also the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces, there are numerous plants in various stages of growth, which attract a variety of other planteaters.Take the rain forests for example. In their natural states, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor.By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants create open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests bee suitable for largehoofed planteaters to move around and for smallsized planteaters to obtain their food as well.Scientists are worried now that the African elephant has bee an endangered species. If the elephant dies out, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forests and savannas, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了非洲象对非洲大草原生态系统的巨大影响。
